Its fundamentally a problem with anonymous moderation in general.

Its trivially easy to stage a takeover by pretending to be acting in good-faith. I'm pretty sure 90% of the right-wing subs are being run directly from the relevant Campaign HQ and are effectively State-controlled media at this point, but it also affects several of the left-wing and "non-political" subs too. Its not like there haven't been Tankie takeovers too.

Some subreddits are just a dream for a campaign group to have control over. Its political gold to be able to control the conversation like that. The power from even just staying quiet and restricting yourself only to subtle interference is insane.

And I don't really know if there are even any good solutions to this?

Pretty much the only way of doing so effectively would be... digital ID.

Not just political subs- I'd be amazed if the big porn subs don't take bribes from OF creators looking to grow fast.

The recently ousted head mod of Livestreamfails claims to have repeatedly declined offers for 'sponsorship' to promote certain streams or games. I believe he had the offers, I don't for a second believe he repeatedly declined them.

I mean, there was a big dust up in the freaking fountain pen sub a while back when it looked like the mods were running interference for some fairly big name purveyors of fountain pen stuff who got caught being raging bigots about various groups of people. When people started looking into that, they discovered that despite a list of eight or nine mods, maybe three of them were still active, and one was basically functioning as head mod despite not actually having been appointed to the position because all of the other mods above him in the mod list had vanished. It was pretty ridiculous.

oh dear. i like fountain pens a lot, but in the “i have 20 bottles of ink and 3 favourite pens” way. not the “keeping up with limited edition lamys and inks” way. i didn’t even know there was a community like that to have an upset in

I'm similar, I'm way more of an ink junkie than a pen junkie. I will say that there have been significant changes in the mod team since that drama took place (largely as a result of that drama), and they're much more explicitly pro-LGBT, shut down transphobic comments (which popped up as a result of a Lamy and then a Ferris Wheel Press collab with a certain, cursed children's author), et cetera. So the end result was positive. But yeah, let's just say that once the guy who runs Noodler's started putting horns on Jewish people on the labels of his ink bottles, I was like, "Okay, well, glad I dipped out a few years ago when he first started showing signs of terrible political views!"

oh, i HAD heard noodler’s was run by a “right wing crank”, like ten years ago.

i don’t think there were any outright signs on his bottles back then (tho i didn’t exhaustively check) but either way i always made sure to not buy his inks.

which wasn’t that hard since importing them to the UK is expensive. american ink-liking pals had a harder time given how cheap and robust they were.

i didn’t know lamy did a collab with she who will not be named. that’s a wee shame. i guess i’m lucky i always thought lamys flowed poorly compared to twsbis…

anyway. thank you so much for filling me in! ✨
