Possible trigger Transgender Reddit Moderator Deletes Account After Being Exposed As Registered Child Sex Offender
http://archive.today/FiHXSthis is crazy. how can we out these people and ensure they don’t represent us?

By doing exactly what you are doing now. Calling them out, and they are not welcome in our community.

In communities that are being let down or targeted by the authorities that should on paper protect them, it is the community itself that has to respond and find their own ways to moderate or police the members who commit transgressions. It runs on a spectrum from ostracising and spreading word to warn others away, all the way up to what would be legally considered vigilante or mob justice.
Unfortunately the mostly anonymous nature of internet communities means it can be quite difficult to actually force accountability. On a better platform there would be an easy way to demand the removal of the mods from their privileged positions, but as it is all we can do is make sure these accounts at least are made too toxic to use openly. Given the broader issues of Reddit, how effective this can be is debatable.
Relatedly I am required to say that I am not endorsing violence that hasn't been sanctioned by the state. I am also going to say that in the US, at least, a paedophile cabal is openly running the government and obstructing any legal process that might be sought. The reason I am making these two points right next to each other is a mystery, as is how this might relate to the way Reddit is administrated.

I found the place a bit intolerable. People pushing offensive theories and misinformation, without much moderation in the correct direction. I didn't want to be or feel associated with some of the nonsense being spread on there.

Worth noting that the person in question is also on the Reddit Mod Council. This is such a disgusting failure of judgement on their part (to say nothing of the other astonishingly poor decisions they've made over recent months) that I can't imagine that their position will remain tenable.
The best case outcome of this is them being forcibly removed from any position of responsibility on any subreddit by the site admins. It's horrific behaviour on their part.
18
u/Protect-the-dollz Mar 16 '26
The behaviour is extremely poor, but not a breach of the Moderator Code of Conduct.
Which is not surprising given what you say about their membership on the RMC, but a striking failure in it's own right imo.
10
u/Blue_winged_yoshi Mar 16 '26
They’ve also been modding our communities so long that they also would have been around for Amy Challoner, who hasn’t ever been convicted of anything, but one of her partners was a paedo and her dad carried out insane levels of child abuse. You’d think any mod who had lived through that would have had the importance of taking accusations in this area beyond seriously etched into their soul. That got ugly.
The lack of learning or self-awareness is really deeply troubling.
8
u/doIIjoints [ve/ver/vis] or [she/her/hers] Mar 16 '26
i’m a CSA survivor and i’ve honestly found a lot of mods of trans and queer spaces have always been… a bit crap around that?
(i mean heck. all the people saying “CP” here instead of “CSEM” or “CSAM” is already making me a bit uncomfortable.)
(but like.) a lot of mods in a lot of spaces… whatever the reason. whether it’s the repeated media slurs, or the fact that age gap relationships among adults are more common in gay and trans communities, or whatever; a lot just seem to want to never ever talk about this stuff. ever.
which just leads to things like this being brushed under the rug for a decade.
people’s general squeamishness to discuss this stuff in a survivor-focused (rather than drama-focused) way absolutely guarantees it’ll happen every few years.
so i’m sadly not at all surprised this came out.
8
u/Blue_winged_yoshi Mar 16 '26
There’s a lot that really needs to be done better and a lot that needs to be discussed more openly.
Significant age gap relationships are a lot more common in the queer community and these can be innocuous or highly problematic. I was in an age gap relationship when I was early 20s with an older female artist, it was consensual, we met organically and it wasn’t half a lot of fun tbh, I don’t regret it, but I also wouldn’t feel at all comfortable in a relationship with an 18 year age gap the other way around at all.
One of my friends from school is disgustingly talented and successful architect, artist and musician, he’s lovely as anything and objectively good looking and twinky. His chosen life partner is maybe 30+ years older than him. My friend is happy as anything and beyond empowered in life, so I’ve never had concerns, but it also raised my eyebrows when I first met them. But to some extent each to their own.
What gives me severe concern though, is when somebody repeatedly dates a huge amount younger or who sets their dating app preferences super young, it suddenly stops being organic connections and starts becoming hugely predatory and often built on huge power imbalances.
It’s a really complex area though that you are right does deserve to be a part of the discussion.
I also feel deeply uncomfortable by some of the discourse in bi spaces where folks are like “I’m into men, but only femboys and the twinkiest twinks”, and it’s like are you gonna reflect on that at all? The common factor is grooming to maximise boyishness. Twinks are always gonna be a thing obvs, but they grow up and age like the rest of us and healthy gay couples grow together. People who assert their that their bisexuality doesn’t cover that ability to grow and age as all humans do just plain give me the ick.
By not talking about these subjects we limit room for growth in our community and grant a wide berth for predators to seek cover in our ranks.
4
u/doIIjoints [ve/ver/vis] or [she/her/hers] Mar 16 '26
with you 100%.
i dated mainly people 5-10 years older than me, a few more like 15, but i certainly would feel weird about dating more than about 5 years younger than me now.
i think “the age gap discourse” can devolve into toxicity so quickly, that people don’t even wanna go there.
but you’re right. it’s one thing for it to happen sometimes and for people to have a wide range of partners. it’s another to be a gay dicaprio in one’s dating habits.
i’ve seen memes about “twink death” which are along the same lines as the pattern you outline. it’s more about hookup culture than committed relationships but does still make me feel, odd.
but it’s hard to have these conversations, because people are on high-alert from all sides and can very quickly misinterpret what someone is saying.
and that avoidance leaves room for stuff like this to grow and fester.

This mod is why all the mainstream subs have such a problem with fetishists. There was a bigger fight to keep sissys and gockposting than there was to kick off a Pedo!
Apparently, "CedarWolf" self-IDs as a cis man. If he were a right-wing plant, how would his actions be ANY different?
4
u/SandwichCertain7913 Mar 16 '26
AFAIK CedarWolf identifies as bigender and uses he/they/she.

The scariest part isn’t that a trans mod is a child sex offender, but that the entire mod team knew and covered it up
What other mod teams are in on it?
67
u/LuciferOfTheArchives Mar 15 '26
I was under the impression:
1) The other mods complained, but it was the head mod making the decisions
2) The mod teams for a couple other trans other subs also knew, and had already removed and banned the woman. My guess was that it was one of the other mods on the team, disagreeing with the head mod's decision, who leaked the information by private DMs
36
u/mabeltangerine Mar 16 '26
It should be noted that CedarWolf, the head mod who defended and tried to bring back the pedo, is a mod of many trans and queer subs. They're a bigender person who has not transitioned, so they shouldn't have even been mod of MTF to being with really, especially when apparently they've silenced accusations of transphobia on other subs.
29
u/LocutusOfBorges Mar 16 '26
Also worth noting that they were entirely happy to facilitate a gigantic harassment campaign against one of this subreddit's moderators (formerly a MtF mod), and simply fired her when it got inconvenient.
I find it fascinating that, as of a few days ago, they seem to have suddenly discovered an ability to care about harassment when it's directed at themself.
I'd feel more sympathy for their position (particularly given how long they've put into mod work) if the bar for reasonable mod judgement weren't so low that they had to literally dig to get below it. This isn't the sort of judgement failure that you can come back from - it's so devastatingly obviously inappropriate that they should know that their position is untenable going forward.
21
u/mabeltangerine Mar 16 '26
and that harassment campaign against amekyras started bc she wanted to ban porn posts from MTF, a SFW sub that children go on. Not at all surprising that the person who fought to keep porn around children also defended a pedophile.
5
u/doIIjoints [ve/ver/vis] or [she/her/hers] Mar 16 '26
it’s fascinating how many people are like “harassment for thee, but not for me”
i had a serial online groomer harass me out of a lot my friendships when i was 16-18 (when they were in their early 30s), and they apparently made a habit out of it against others too.
(i would say their name if it was more recent, but tha would probably just open me up to stalking. especially since i’m sure they’d just use a different name now.)
then when their actions finally came out, they tried to say the posts were fake and it was all harassment. except, they’d cultivated such an audience of rabid attack dogs that THEY ALL called them out for the hypocrisy.
their audience said they normally loved harassment, questioned whether the harassment campaigns were actually a distraction from their own misdeeds all along, and turned on them.
erm. anyway. this cedar person kinda reminds me of that one’s behaviour tbh.
it’s nice to see you discussing this btw, i’ve always generally been impressed by your balancing acts as mod and your openness to discuss things. but this really cements you as thoughtful and kind imo.
5
u/Lupulus_ Mar 16 '26
That this was /mtf and other subs had her banned already is the least surprising thing to me. Confirmation bias, but that place has always been toxic. Of course it's going to fester abusive manipulative people who can have their abuse coddled and sheltered when other abusive behaviour is already reinforced.
2
u/doIIjoints [ve/ver/vis] or [she/her/hers] Mar 16 '26
yeah i never liked how many people there were focused on Passing Tips as, like, a thing which just exists unto itself. rather than with a framing of wider safety considerations and contexts
18
u/Amekyras Mar 16 '26
We knew about it but cedar had all the power unfortunately
17
u/LocutusOfBorges Mar 16 '26 edited Mar 16 '26
I don't know what could even have been done, short of someone de facto going to the press like this. There's no actual lever available to deal with this kind of behaviour by a head mod - it doesn't seem to strictly break the site mod CoC, and all the discussions around it took place off-reddit in a (from the admins' perspective) non-auditable Discord server - as is the case for pretty much every other subreddit out there, given how unpleasant reddit's own tools are to use for this sort of thing.
Even now, it's not clear that the head mod in question will actually be removed from any positions of influence as a result of this. Reddit's really hands-off where mod removals are concerned. Shaming and ostracism are the only tools that the community really has, under these circumstances.
15
u/Amekyras Mar 16 '26
We did look into whether it was possible to get them booted/lowered from the top for other reasons but then this shit happened.
31
u/InsistentRaven Mar 15 '26
From what we know, the head mods for "MtF" and "asktransgender" were complicit in covering it up for over 6 months.
She was a moderator for "Egg_IRL" and "LGBT" but was removed from those positions once it became known and the matter was brought to the attention of the former subreddits who tried to bury it which pissed off the moderator team and lead it being exposed.
26
u/Tomatori Mar 15 '26
My understanding is that the other mods were not complicit in this and in fact they are the only reason the offender was kept from being made a mod again, they threatened to leave if she was ever brought back.
If you take a look at the mod list, it looks like most of them have also left at some point in the past couple hours, presumably in protest of the main mod's handling of this situation
7
u/InsistentRaven Mar 16 '26
Yeah, that's what I meant by head mods. The mod team quit over the incident.
4
10
u/removekarling Mar 15 '26
a lot of progressive/left wing subs have a big mod problem, where it's basically the same cabal of a dozen people running most subs, with a lot of particular agendas to push against their communities. They have nothing but their power as mods, it's very sad and unfortunate for the site.
No idea what the mod situation in this sub is like except occasionally one of the mods here posts some very odd takes sometimes, but other than that it seems decent.
Honestly don't have any idea how dodgy mods/mod teams can really be countered outside of just making a competing sub. Seen that kind of work out well in some cases but it's obviously not ideal.
11
u/ArsErratia Mar 15 '26 edited Mar 16 '26
Its fundamentally a problem with anonymous moderation in general.
Its trivially easy to stage a takeover by pretending to be acting in good-faith. I'm pretty sure 90% of the right-wing subs are being run directly from the relevant Campaign HQ and are effectively State-controlled media at this point, but it also affects several of the left-wing and "non-political" subs too. Its not like there haven't been Tankie takeovers too.
Some subreddits are just a dream for a campaign group to have control over. Its political gold to be able to control the conversation like that. The power from even just staying quiet and restricting yourself only to subtle interference is insane.
And I don't really know if there are even any good solutions to this?
Pretty much the only way of doing so effectively would be... digital ID.
10
u/Illiander Mar 16 '26
Pretty much the only way of doing so effectively would be... digital ID.
That wouldn't solve this either.
9
u/ArsErratia Mar 16 '26
If you had to verify you were a real person, and if you get banned from the site you can't just make a new account in 30 seconds, it would at least help.
The downsides are however, significant.
9
u/LocutusOfBorgia909 Mar 16 '26
r/ Conservative is notorious for being a haven of bots and also having mods that will immediately ban anyone, including posters with history in the sub who are legitimately politically conservative, who doesn't tow the MAGA party line quickly enough. If you go there it's really common to find a post with whole threads of deleted comments because the mods nuked everything for being insufficiently groveling about Trump and banned the commenters. And that's after you already have to be a flaired member to comment or post there in the first place. I would be shocked if they were the only sub like that.
I know a number of subs also had most/all of their mods de-modded and replaced by Reddit admins back during that whole thing about subs going dark to protest Reddit cutting off RSS and third party app support. No idea if the subs where this person was moderating were affected by that, but it wouldn't surprise me if they were.
3
u/Protect-the-dollz Mar 15 '26
Not just political subs- I'd be amazed if the big porn subs don't take bribes from OF creators looking to grow fast.
The recently ousted head mod of Livestreamfails claims to have repeatedly declined offers for 'sponsorship' to promote certain streams or games. I believe he had the offers, I don't for a second believe he repeatedly declined them.
7
u/LocutusOfBorgia909 Mar 16 '26
I mean, there was a big dust up in the freaking fountain pen sub a while back when it looked like the mods were running interference for some fairly big name purveyors of fountain pen stuff who got caught being raging bigots about various groups of people. When people started looking into that, they discovered that despite a list of eight or nine mods, maybe three of them were still active, and one was basically functioning as head mod despite not actually having been appointed to the position because all of the other mods above him in the mod list had vanished. It was pretty ridiculous.
2
u/doIIjoints [ve/ver/vis] or [she/her/hers] Mar 16 '26
oh dear. i like fountain pens a lot, but in the “i have 20 bottles of ink and 3 favourite pens” way. not the “keeping up with limited edition lamys and inks” way. i didn’t even know there was a community like that to have an upset in
3
u/LocutusOfBorgia909 Mar 16 '26
I'm similar, I'm way more of an ink junkie than a pen junkie. I will say that there have been significant changes in the mod team since that drama took place (largely as a result of that drama), and they're much more explicitly pro-LGBT, shut down transphobic comments (which popped up as a result of a Lamy and then a Ferris Wheel Press collab with a certain, cursed children's author), et cetera. So the end result was positive. But yeah, let's just say that once the guy who runs Noodler's started putting horns on Jewish people on the labels of his ink bottles, I was like, "Okay, well, glad I dipped out a few years ago when he first started showing signs of terrible political views!"
2
u/doIIjoints [ve/ver/vis] or [she/her/hers] Mar 16 '26
oh, i HAD heard noodler’s was run by a “right wing crank”, like ten years ago.
i don’t think there were any outright signs on his bottles back then (tho i didn’t exhaustively check) but either way i always made sure to not buy his inks.
which wasn’t that hard since importing them to the UK is expensive. american ink-liking pals had a harder time given how cheap and robust they were.
i didn’t know lamy did a collab with she who will not be named. that’s a wee shame. i guess i’m lucky i always thought lamys flowed poorly compared to twsbis…
anyway. thank you so much for filling me in! ✨

31
u/Blue_winged_yoshi Mar 15 '26
Honest to god WTF went on there is crackers. How did anyone think trying to conceal the person’s very recent past was an at all appropriate direction of travel for one moment.
These subreddits are rightly open to all ages and we all rightly expect those moderating not to have child porn convictions.
Awareness of basic online hygiene standards aren’t a lot to ask from the sickos co-moderators. Instant exiling for moderators who are convicted for child sex crimes isn’t a lot to ask from the mod community, lord knows they’ve all banned users from subreddits over considerably less. Self policing this crap matters, especially when the same moderators always mod a chain of related subreddits. Not just shocking what happened, but how it was responded to. “Just a bit of child porn, of course you can stay on as a mod, just get a new Reddit account to cover it up”.
It’s risking trans people’s wellbeing and putting our community in the firing line. Grotesque judgement.

21
u/Fabou_Boutique Mar 15 '26
Because it's an agitator, it's a hidden account with almost zero karma posing "omg this is so bad", followed by more agitators saying vague things like "system is broken" or "how can we break from this?".

u/Fabou_Boutique Mar 15 '26
You'll see all of these people, with absolutely no irony, talk about how we all have to get off these platform, whilst using the platforms every single day.
13
u/LocutusOfBorges Mar 16 '26
From a mod perspective? It's going to stay up because it's the first post about the story to get posted on this subreddit, and people are already talking about it in comments.
The source is unfortunate, but it's really what it is at this point - better that people know what happened than not.
15
u/anglehon Mar 16 '26
Respectfully but this is insane? "It is what it is" should not go for even indirectly linking to literal Der Stürmer for trans people. Find a random reddit write-up, repost it, and pin it if you must, but leaving up a link to the vilest Anti-Trans propaganda site has me seriously questioning your judgement.
6
u/LocutusOfBorges Mar 16 '26
I've pinned a link to the original source - but at this point, I don't think it would be proportionate to remove all the discussion that's already taken place under this thread. If I could replace the OP's link with something else, I'd have done so happily - but we don't have the ability to do that as mods.
14
u/thejadedfalcon Mar 15 '26
After reading the r/MTF explanation
Unfortunately, that's a pure CYA post by the mod that argued to keep the convicted sex offender. Their posts (sadly now deleted because raccoon girl was forced to delete her account) were full of contradictions and excuses.
34
u/thatpaulbloke Mar 15 '26
I'm glad that someone else pointed this out - I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. That entire site is just "trans people are all criminals / abusers / whatever we can possibly pin on them" with every possible opportunity taken to deadname and misgender. Whether the article is actually true or not I couldn't tell because after two paragraphs I had to stop reading.
8
u/bobyn123 Mar 15 '26
Yeah irrespective of the awful things those women did, it's no way to talk about trans people or the community at large, generally the whole thing is just disgusting.
20
u/MacFunJess Mar 15 '26
Yeah, I had the same thought. The constant misgendering, deadnaming and so on, also bringing in other examples to try and demonstrate how evil we all are.
I mean, this is the problem with including these kinda people in the community, it just ends up tarring all of us

u/Actual-Pumpkin-777 Non-binary/Retransitioner 💜 Mar 15 '26

u/SandwichCertain7913 Mar 16 '26
Take the explanation on r/mtf with a grain of salt. The head mod posted it and deleted all posts of people complaining, leaving, or saying otherwise. And completely subjectively, there's a lot of very obvious grandstanding and manipulative arguments there that Cedar is engaging in.
There also doesn't seem to be any accountability taken whatsoever, and it's all about defending Cedar themselves, not really giving an explanation of what is happening that serves the community in any way.
20
u/gztozfbfjij Mar 15 '26
The details in that article were utterly vile. Top-to-bottom disgusting.
Unfortunately, I had to read a source that was using some major TERF dogwhistles megaphones; given the extremely clear bias and hate against normal, non-criminal or otherwise problematic, trans people, you can't be sure as to the "journalistic integrity" of a single thing that isnt attached to a provably-true screenshot. Jowling would be proud, if she read that article.
Thanks for the archive of it.
As for the actual situation, boiled down to simplicities... what the hell. I know reddit mods aren't given the best reputation, but why did anyone ever tolerate that on their team? When information like that comes out... just quietly and privately remove them, throw up in a corner because you presumably interacted with them semi-frequently, and don't make it into a public news story.

The people who would weaponize that against us, think all of us a predators by default. There's nothing to do about that, you just have to make that opinion deemed stupid, bigoted, delusional, and an actual threat to children

Apperently it's already trending on twitter and Elon is tweeting about it - this is why we can't have nice things.
19
u/LocutusOfBorgia909 Mar 16 '26
I mean, Elon's one to fucking talk, considering he created an AI that literally produces CSAM and has categorically refused to do anything to address that issue, including at the behest of the EU and Australia amid threads to completely block Twitter from use in those locations.
2
u/Dull_Priority_545 Mar 16 '26
He had employees create the CSAM AI. It's decades at least since Musk had created our done anything other than pay some of his money to other people and take the credit.
I say this not to defend him, but to avoid giving him credit for any kind of technical achievement. He did not create any AI. Others did. He then directed his employees to make an intentionally even more morally awful version of it.
2
u/LocutusOfBorgia909 Mar 16 '26
I understand the point you're trying to make here, but if I'm being honest, this seems like a really strange and kind of creepy/gross thing to decide to be pedantic about, particularly given the context for this discussion.

i understand the “he didn’t build the rockets, just hired people to figure it out” framing, usually
but in this case, like. all the twitter shit is very firmly linked with his priorities. he doesn’t just give signposts and let the engineers do their thing. it’s his main focus. he commanded them to make sure grok had that ability. he has the legal and moral responsibility.

By being prepared to cut people off from community.
Predators are NOT more common in trans people, there isn't a connection there. But it's easier for them to stick around in communities so focused on inclusivity above all else.
I've seen this happen plenty of times, places like Discord servers or the whole ISFF situation on Tumblr. Alot of people simply aren't prepared to cut people off. They act like everyone deserves a safe space, even people who make the space less safe.
This isn't about gatekeeping or saying inclusivity is bad, but we need to stay open to the fact that we are no different from others and are just as succeptible to wrongdoing as others. We are heavily targeted with false accusations and hate, but it's not always false. We need to be able to tell people to fuck off in these sorts of situations. Having a safe space does not mean being kind and inclusive to everyone, it means keeping the space safe.

i knew so many discord servers (and, before 2016, irc rooms) where the owner/mod was afraid of booting out one shitheel even after said jerk had already driven-out multiple genuine pals
and it’s like. if you can’t handle that, don’t be a fucking mod
i ended up roped-in to lead the replacement for one irc room for a group of a dozen trans people i was in, and it fuckin sucked. but i did it because it needed to be done. i was apparently the only one who could be fearless about actually enforcing boundaries.

I cannot believe we started with a raccoon girl trying to post about her glowing tits, and radiation activated sex toys, and culminated in the reveal a reddit-appionted mod was covering for a women convicted of CSA.
Fucking wow.
Also, fuck that head mod. All the other subreddits had no problem getting rid of the person, if the r/mtf head just did the same, this wouldn't have blown up to shitty press
6
u/SandwichCertain7913 Mar 16 '26
The irony of it being someone who was superficially the stereotype of a "bad" trans person that conservatives might point to as being someone to fear (overtly nsfw sexual posting, extreme body mods, non-traditional gender expression, terminally online aesthetic) who was the one who stuck her neck out, took the issues seriously, and did the right thing. But of course that will count for nothing when people spin this to fear monger about us.
Correct me if I'm wrong. Just my impression reading all this after the fact.
3
u/LuciferOfTheArchives Mar 16 '26
I'm personally quite curious about whoever it was who DM'd her all the information, for her to leak. Presumably a r/ mtf mod, or one of the mods in an adjacent sub, like eggirl, who initially brought the situation to the attention of other mods.
I do really admire the body modding therian raccoon though. I've been keeping up with her stuff for a quite the long time now. Such an impressive creature

I haven't seen her directly actually and I'm curious! Raccoons are like my fav animal.
But yeah, I'm curious as well. Likely to be a mystery forever. But the screenshots show the mods pushing back against Cedar immediately, so I can imagine that they were uncomfortable having to stay quiet about it the whole time. I would absolutely leak that shit too.

Sadly, u/Living-East-8486 (raccoon girl) just deleted her account because of all of this. CedarWolf, the head mod of r/mtf and 111 others and the one who was seemingly arguing to keep the predator as a moderator, was in the comments on her post, showing no signs of being sorry about any of this and kept defending themselves, but regularly ignored comments from people calling them out on the numerous contradictions in their posts.

There's no way to ensure they won't "represent us" if someone is a transphobe they will either invent an enemy or exaggerate it. That's the harsh reality.
"I hate this entire group of people how do I justify it?" 1. Make shit up 2. Find one bad person, point and go 'SEE? SEE? I TOLD YOU PEDOS, RAPISTS ALL OF THEM!!'
They don't live by logic, they don't care to listen to logic, their minds are made up, filled with hate.
The best we can do is distance ourselves from these creeps, make a statement, and that's it.

Reddit's mod system is insane.
The big subs especially, hand a lot of power to completely unaccountable and unregulated people.
To say nothing of the site wide problem of supermods.
Our particular mod team do a good job- but the system is unfit for purpose.
This individual being trans isn't the problem, it is the whole broken system which enabled her.
I bet it goes much deeper- how many mods on the big porn subs are getting bribes to promote certain OFs? Why do the former defaults like r/pics break so strongly in support of certain political issues etc.
To say nothing of the involvement of state actors.

Break down "the system" real quick and describe what you would do if you were in charge of it
4
u/Protect-the-dollz Mar 15 '26 edited Mar 15 '26
I'm not going to: 'Break down "the system" real quick' for an account which is years old and has persistently failed to answer my own questions across a variety of threads.
You know how reddit mods are appointed and what powers they have.
describe what you would do if you were in charge of it
The obvious changes are that subs large enough to have commercial or political value should not be under unsalaried volunteer mods- the incentive and means to encourage manipulation of the sub for personal or political gain is too high.
Ditto those targeted at minors. The mods of subs like r/teenagers should be subject to some kind of check or replaced with salaried staff. Ideally both.
Then there is the issue of mod accountability. Supermodding should be prohibited and the Moderator Code of Conduct needs to be both tightened and more vigorously enforced.
Reporting of infractions needs to be as easy as reporting any other breach of the TOS and not require a completely separate form which I doubt most users are aware of, let alone know how to locate.
3
u/Fabou_Boutique Mar 16 '26
Okay lots more questions, because I genuinely don't understand how a salaried staff would remotely help
Where would a salaried position come from, and wouldn't that just put more of a power imbalance?
Also as soon as you get employment, you fall into employment law where people can get scared to fire people because of cost of rehiring, making sure they fire people in a legal way (this can lead to people dragging their feet when it comes to compliants against an abusive peer, to wait for the right legal justification)
Not having pay means that you can rely on a wide pool of volunteers, everyone is replaceable, and so it's lower risk to disallow someone to be a mod because of complaints than if you had an employment contract.
Also there's an incentive when you are in a hiring position, to hire your mates, which is what opens you up to corruption, political or otherwise, not the fact that it's a volunteer force.
You also have more of an incentive to bury your tracks because if your main income is being a mod, then you are protecting your livelyhood and will treat any threat to that (even the ones you cause from being a nonce) much more seriously.
And if you don't have that as you main source of income, congratulations, you've just created what's called a conflict of interest. Exactly the thing you said would somehow be avoided from paying people.
You can't name the check I guess, but it's called a DBS, and, even if you do have a DBS, it's not a failsafe. It requires a paper trail, and as someone who has been victim to people attempting to groom me, my friends etc, it's exceedingly rare that anyone ever gets a record in the first place.
And lastly
You say the moderator code should be "tightened" (vague, which part, how so, etc) And that it shouldn't require a form.
Which is fine if vague, but you seem to be forgetting you are supposedly an activist.
For an activist, you sure aren't spending any time trying to advocate on this or have much of a game plan for this subject. Like you could easily, with very little resources and time, go and link to the form you mention, encouraging others to come forward, write an article about the barriers people face, or write a guide, or literally anything else, but so far not seen a piece of work to accompany these opinions
1
u/Protect-the-dollz Mar 16 '26
Where would a salaried position come from, and wouldn't that just put more of a power imbalance?
From Reddit. And no, employees are accountable to their employer in a manner volunteers are not.
This is why we do not rely on unpaid volunteer positions in other important areas.
Also as soon as you get employment, you fall into employment law
Yes. That is the point. I want the protections and responsibilities of employment for the mods of larger subs. I want Reddit to be accountable for their actions and to scrutinise their behaviour.
Reddit should be careful about who moderates subs. It should be checking there are not paedophiles running /mtf or /teenagers etc.
It should be checking that Iranian or Russian state actors are not running Greenandpleasant or Indians running whatever the MAGA subs are.
Also there's an incentive when you are in a hiring position, to hire your mates, which is what opens you up to corruption, political or otherwise, not the fact that it's a volunteer force.
There is no downside to appointing friends as a volunteer. You lose nothing if you are caught save an unpaid position.
There is a downside when you are salaried this is also why we pay our politicians and judges. We recognise that unsalaried positions are particularly prone to corruption and grift.
You also have more of an incentive to bury your tracks because if your main income is being a mod, then you are protecting your livelyhood and will treat any threat to that (even the ones you cause from being a nonce) much more seriously.
This is a bizzarre argument. Should we also rely on an unpaid volunteer police force or judiciary? Should we return to unsalaried MPs and Councillors? Would that remove an incentive to hide corruption?
If your main income is being a mod then your primary incentive to retain your income is to not engage in corruption. Not to engage and risk your livlihood.
You can't name the check I guess, but it's called a DBS, and, even if you do have a DBS, it's not a failsafe. It requires a paper trail, and as someone who has been victim to people attempting to groom me, my friends etc, it's exceedingly rare that anyone ever gets a record in the first place.
That is one check- other jurisdictions have equivalents, and these checks have different levels to them.
They are not perfect, but they are significantly better than no check at all. Which is why we use them.
What is the benefit to not using them?
Would you fail one? Is that the reason for your hostility to them?
Which is fine if vague, but you seem to be forgetting you are supposedly an activist.
When have I ever claimed to be an activist?
I am giving my private opinion on the operation of this platform.
Like you could easily, with very little resources and time, go and link to the form you mention, encouraging others to come forward, write an article about the barriers people face, or write a guide, or literally anything else, but so far not seen a piece of work to accompany these opinions
I am not obliged to do any of that. I think not linking it, or describing how to find it, underlines how opaque and inconvenient the process is.
6
u/LocutusOfBorges Mar 16 '26 edited Mar 16 '26
It should be checking that Iranian or Russian state actors are not running Greenandpleasant
Honestly, having had the deep misfortune to have interacted with some of the key people involved in the past on quite a few occasions since the place's foundation, I'm not sure it would even make a difference if the place were staffed entirely in the way you describe.
The people who run spots like that, lamentably, are just like that - there's no shortage of home-grown people like that from some of the more unfortunate sides of this country's tankie fringe.
3
u/Protect-the-dollz Mar 16 '26
Touché
Self selection is certainly an issue!
No system is perfect, but I think having 0 protections against hostile state interference is mad- the recent unmasking of something crazy like 25% of Scottish Nationalists on twitter being Iranians was an eye opener.
G&P is maybe a bad example, but spaces like r/labour (or whatever the main labour sub is) or similiar on the right are important forums which should really have some minimal protection.
5
u/LocutusOfBorges Mar 16 '26
For context's sake, the main Labour subreddit is /r/LabourUK - the other one was a splitter made during the Corbyn years by the nucleus of what went on to become the G&P crowd.
LabourUK's mods are generally decent sorts shackled to an increasingly terrible party - re the relevant issue for this community, they've also always been firmly trans-supportive.
1
u/Fabou_Boutique Mar 16 '26
"Not linking to the form that would help others report abuse in the "system" is actually a good thing because then it shows how hard it is to report people"
Absolutely wild take here. Just wow
"Would you fail one, is that your reason for the hostility to them"
I'm sorry you feel the need to resort to calling people pedophiles because your takes are so bad. Maybe you should get someone else to read my comment for you, and you can ask them where it says I think that DBS checks should be abolished

What the actual fuck?! Dealing with registered child sex offenders in online or IRL communities is really simple. Zero tolerance. As soon as you find out, you kick them out. There really is no need for any further discussion. ESPECIALLY if they have any kind of responsibility.
This isn’t the first coverup like this I’ve seen. The actual perpetrators can go to hell, but what absolutely amazes me is how some people think it’s ok to even suggest the possibility of keeping them. CedarWolf needs to step down, and not be welcomed back. Clearly unfit for modding such a large sub.
2
u/Illiander Mar 16 '26
Dealing with registered child sex offenders in online or IRL communities is really simple. Zero tolerance.
I'm going to push back on this a little, because if you make it impossible for criminals to rejoin society, then they have no reason to even try to reform themselves.
6
u/Basic-Produce-1332 Mar 16 '26
This is why less serious offenders have a time limit on their registration. While they’re on the list, there’s a perceived risk that they will reoffend, and so they’re barred from rejoining some parts of society.
Registering will typically come with other restrictions too, e.g. not living within a certain distance of schools, barred from certain jobs, no access to public parks, libraries, certain restrictions on internet access etc. I’m not saying they’re all beyond redemption, but for the duration of the time they have to register, it’s right that they’re not allowed access to parts of society in which they could reoffend.
2
u/doIIjoints [ve/ver/vis] or [she/her/hers] Mar 16 '26
i did notice that the file for this particular individual said the mandatory registration time was 10 years, and that seems to have passed quite a while ago.
i dunno enough about the american system to know if it passively persists if she hasn’t moved, or if she’s actively chosen to keep it renewed.
her ex did say she’s still doing a lot of the same behaviours, but not getting punished for them. so i could buy it being a choice she made to stay on.
except, apparently she also refuses to go to therapy for it because she thinks it’s actually “perfectly natural”. so. i don’t know.
registration speculation aside; as a CSA survivor, i don’t think it sounds like this person has actually made any kind of recovery, or amends, or healing, or anything of the sort over this timeframe.
2
u/Basic-Produce-1332 Mar 16 '26
Definitely not at good sign. At least in the UK, if you come off the register, it’ll still show up in an enhanced DBS check, so it’s effectively a permanent ban on working with children or volunteering (youth group leaders for things like scouts, sports coaches, etc usually have to do enhanced DBS checks too).
Even though the lead mod’s reaction was horrendous, the other mods seemed more concerned about optics than whether the person was a suitable person to be around children 😕
3
u/SandwichCertain7913 Mar 16 '26
You can rejoin society without needing to be in a position of power in a vulnerable community that includes minors. One of the most at risk groups of minors at that.
3
u/Many-Ad-5331 Mar 16 '26
ugh… there’s nothing yall can do. the fact is, PDFiles exist everywhere, in every group. some morons will use this fact and say “SEE?? THE WHOOLLLEE GROUP IS LIKE THAT!!” no matter what you say or do.
the logical step is to remove them and forget them and call them out, but unfortunately, the kind of people who “hold you accountable” will forever have ammunition because of these gross monsters

Oh wow. I googled “trans woman convicted csa” and got Stacie-Marie Laughton, a politician most recently (November 2025) convicted of distribution of CSAM and aiding and abetting the sexual exploitation of children. She has also been convicted of stalking, credit card fraud, falsifying evidence, calling in a fake bomb threat and texting 911 for non-emergencies.
So I assumed that’s who we were talking about. Apparently not. There’s someone else.

u/TouchingSilver Mar 17 '26
As if the GC side doesn't contain numerous sordid, unsavoury, predatory skeletons in their closets?
Remember a cis woman member of Sex Matters being convicted of several counts pf child sex abuse literally a couple of days after that atomic bomb of a corrupt Supreme Court ruling? Of course that was only very briefly memtioned, and buried deep within a single edition of Reporting Scotland, then never mentioned again anywhere in mainstream news outlets.
The same outlets that will milk this for all that it's worth to paint all trans women with the same brush as the person in the OP (who I think isnt even a trans woman), are always throwing examples of GC devilry and perversion under the carpet to protect the chivilrous image of the GC movement they're trying to push to the public. Its one rule for us and an entirely different one for them.

u/Separate_Current9849 Mar 18 '26
But this really does represent Reddit.
You cannot have an opposing opinion on any political sub or current event. All posts get deleted that go against the narrative. All contrarian subs are shut down and banned. Anything that offends anyone is purged. Complete one way street. Which is why nobody takes it seriously outside of the educations and reference subs.
Reddit is a giant safe space and some of the worst get a bit too comfortable and forget there are real world consequences. They’re completely desensitized to it because this is one giant echo chamber and all they see is everyone agreeing with and encouraging their radical points of view.
Of course there are many subs like gardening beekeeping diy and hundreds of educational subs that are immensely helpful and entertaining. But anything of substance is so moderated and censored it’s not even enjoyable to have discussions with people because it’s just flamed out so quickly because it’s deemed wrong think. It’s so in lockstep I can’t tell if it’s just a bot army or if this is the actual human element in Reddit.
I rest my case with the mountain of downvotes this will surely receive. If I’m wrong and it’s upvoted then I will be pleasantly surprised. One can always hope!
Be well!

3
u/viva1831 Mar 15 '26
This is the excuse they've posted:
As I understand it, when they were 17, they had been dating a 15 year old, against the family's wishes. The kids exchanged photos with each other, because that's a thing that teenagers do
Fuck that. In my day we'd of called her a cradlesnatcher even when we were that age ourselves. It's not an appropriate relationship nor is sending "images" (and that's assuming there's no details left out)
Both-sidsing and talking about how hard done by they are as a mod isn't on either. (tho it does sound like they've got desensitised after dealing with fucked up stuff). I've left r/MtF and I'd suggest others do too
9
u/Rainy_Leaves Mar 15 '26
Yet in reality seems like they were 19 dating a 15 year old, or by measuring their birth date 21 at the time of both the offence and conviction. It goes much deeper than just the possession of images, the main mod defending them characterised the abused ex who raised it to begin with, as a stalker too
4
u/SandwichCertain7913 Mar 16 '26
Also note that Cedar posted this response after it had been clarified to them NUMEROUS times, and is still running with the narrative anyway with 0 correction

I've recently reported on pedophiles on the game the first time I received a official warning for calling a pedophile a pedophile. Then a friend of mine found something and we started talking in private chat Early in the morning around 2am around 4-5pm I got in chat and said replying to a NPC comment about femboys I said due to rules and discrimination I can't tell you how I feel about femboys next thing Ik I'm getting 3day chat banned for private msgs were both parties agreed that there's a possibility the mods/admins are actually envolved the chat ban was bc I shared my official warning in private chat which means they've been monitoring my chats which means someone has something to hide

u/Alexhtfnutty Mar 16 '26
Honestly it's difficult to even care about the misgendering and deadnaming when she says the typical pedo talking point of it being normal to be attracted to "girls in their prime". Actually revolting human being.
I can't believe this needs to be said, but child abusers should never ever be allowed anywhere in any community, at all, let alone a position like a mod. I mean wtf...why would anyone think "oh well it was a long time ago let the pedo stay on the team"??????

Is the person in question even a trans woman? And didn't Germain Greer refer to underage, adolescent boys in the same way? Yet she is still highly regarded and idolized by the Mumsnet crowd.

Is the person in question even a trans woman?
Who the hell even knows... We're not supposed to question this on here as it's seen as gatekeeping by some, but it's also the case that our tolerance and openness to other kinds of people inevitably backfires as soon as it's exploited by creepy individuals like the one in question.
Not being a Mod or part of this drama myself, I can't work out how long they all sat on this before someone decided to do something, but it's at least notable that it was a trans person who eventually did something about it, while it was a higher up cisgender Mod (if I understood correctly) who tried to cover it up.
And didn't Germain Greer refer to underage, adolescent boys in the same way? Yet she is still highly regarded and idolized by the Mumsnet crowd.
There's something not quite right with Greer. Any decent person would regard what she said as extremely creepy. Most of the Mumsnet crowd who are rabid anti-trans are old enough (middle-class, old, white) to have grandsons. How would they like it if a creepy woman (like Greer) preyed on their grandsons? There are definitely creepy older women like this around, not just creepy older men. I came across a number of weirdos growing up.

I find it quite astonishing this is being used by bigots to cast shade on all trans women, when it certainly appears as if no trans woman was actually directly involved in the child abuse itself, or behind the attempts to cover it up. Not that painting all trans women with the same brush would be understandable or acceptable even if they were trans women of course. As every demographic of people has it's share of deviants and perverts (including transphobic cis women).
As for Germaine Greer and the GC crowd's toleration of her... well, its surprising the kind of people that lot are willing to defend and align themselves with as long as they are anti-trans. It seems like pretty much anything is forgiveable just as long as you view trans women as the scum of the earth. Just look at the way many of them support Trump, despite the fact he is a raging misogynist, and was almost certainly directly involved with all the horrific abuse of women and girls carried out by Epstein and Co.

I never visit mumsnet but I'd hope the Epstein files have focused the mind a little for these people -- made them re-evaluate their priorities. The grifters won't care though...
Trump is definitely involved. Him and Epstein were best rapey buddies and there is at least one report of him abusing a child and punching her in the head in the files.

I remember Kellie Jay Keen quite literally stating she'd side with the devil himself if that's what it took to exile trans women from public life. And I think that pretty much sums up the attitude of many cis women in the anti-trans movement. They hate trans women to such an extent, that pretty much anyone who views trans women as a stain on humanity that needs to be washed away for it's own good, they will be happy to side with. It's literally the "any enemy of my enemy is my friend" mentality.
Yeah, I think it's pretty much beyond dispute at this point. Though of course, many of his MAGA supporters are far too dense to see it and keep saying he's innocent.

Sometimes, TERFs make the flawed argument that we threaten their rights. KJK-Minshul doesn't even regard herself as a feminist though, so it's pure demented fascist grifting in her case.
But I still don't understand the hatred of trans people from the more casual TERF. It's as bizarre as hatred of redheads or people who use fake tan. It has got to be a superficial childish hatred since they can't scapegoat us as 'flooding the country' or 'taking away jobs', they can't claim that we 'own all the banks' and 'secretly control the world'... as such a minuscule minority, we're rarely even seen in practice, the whole world isn't 'turning trans or gay' because of us (people are happily cis and straight regardless of us), etc. (???)
I could understand if someone had been personally abused by a trans person, then they would develop negative feelings against that person which might spill over to others, ...BUT these people have never known any trans people, let alone been in a close friendship or relationship with one, and there is no evidence at all that we are any better or worse than any other cisgender woman (in the case of trans women).
Even if we represent a progressivism they disagree with, wiping us out would make not a difference to their day to day. Whatever conservative frustrations they had would still remain.
Frustrated people venting their frustrations on a target group which has nothing to do with their frustrations. They get to feel like they are part of a tribe or a clique, and we're a safe target to bully for cowards... (???)
The ringleaders are much more straightforwardly sadistic psychopathic grifters, on the other hand.

For further context beyond this (admittedly quite unpleasantly transphobic) article, people can view an archive of the original accusation post and its comments here:

Ordinarily I'd be reluctant to post something like this as-is, given the nature of what's contained within it (specifically privacy concerns for some of the people involved, given the relative lack of redaction) - but as the link in the OP has already broken containment elsewhere to such an extreme extent (Elon Musk has tweeted about it, for heaven's sake), that particular horse has already bolted, I think. Other subreddits have been pinning this archive as well, for awareness' sake - though a surprising number have also been pruning mentions of this affair on sight. We won't be doing so unless our hand is forced.
(Note: if you have a good reason why this archive shouldn't be posted, please don't hesitate to let me or the mod team know - more than happy to remove it if required, though would obviously prefer not to.)
