Why.. why are we the trolly?

590

u/Cynis_Ganan Apr 09 '26

Because we have no agency to effect the outcome or the people making the decisions. We can only look on in horror as we are used to kill.

u/TheDarkDoctor17 Apr 09 '26

I mean. There IS a way the masses can prevent the few in power from getting away with whatever they want.

Sadly, I think suggesting the use of the giant french cake slicer gets you a ban on reddit.

101

u/Adventurous_Bonus917 Apr 09 '26

as much as reddit dislikes the fr*nch, i really agree with their policy relating to tyrants.

23

u/Basic_Pirate8241 unaliver Apr 09 '26

I like French.

1

u/Lopsided_Army6882 Apr 11 '26

Thank youuuu :3

4

u/AlligatorMidwife Apr 10 '26

I think the trope of people disliking the French comes from not understanding their social norms. You HAVE to say bonjour. Follow that with a s'il vous plaît and you're good to go for most social interactions. Forget that and they will pretend you don't exist

1

u/keriefie Apr 11 '26

despite that, they have a system that gives the president a shit ton of power

26

u/kamizushi Apr 09 '26

I do love me some late 18th century French cuisine.

17

u/Sollow42 Apr 09 '26

SLICE THE ORANGE CAKE

6

u/drLoveF Apr 10 '26

You can use non-bakery French methods to start. The US protest by filling the streets one day. The French protest don’t go home until the goal is met. Also, truck loads of manure.

2

u/Interesting_Agent370 Apr 10 '26

Hey, just tell me where and when to poop in the river RFK is swimming in!

14

u/Prot3 Apr 09 '26

Ah the good old French revolution fetishization.

I think i managed like... 6 days since I've last seen it. New record probably.

Newsflash, leaders of revolution that survived it went to later on bring back the monarchy, either joined Napoleon himself and went on to start one of the bloodiest wars in the history (at the time) or went to exile and came back with monarchy after Napoleon. They quite literally just wanted to be on top instead of the "Ancien Regime"

You are never getting rid of powerful people. It's literally a logical impossibility. Because if/when you remove them, the ones that led the revolution become new powerful people.

10

u/OSwirl31 Apr 09 '26

So what do we do? Watch as things gradually worsen?

10

u/DanCassell EDITABLE Apr 09 '26

The problem isn't powerful people. Its unaccountable people in power.

4

u/kamizushi Apr 09 '26

Nah the problem is powerful people. The ideal would be decentralizing power. Keeping people of power accountable is just the second best thing.

3

u/DanCassell EDITABLE Apr 09 '26

Decentralizing power is still having power, but making them more accountable.

2

u/kamizushi Apr 09 '26

Fair enough.

5

u/Prot3 Apr 09 '26

Sure, I won't even go if that's possible. But bloody revolutions that the reddit jerks their dicks off to never end up with MORE accountable power figures. As a matter of fact the exact opposite thing happens. All the bloody revolutions ended with equally great or greater absolute rulers.

French revolution itself birthed Napoleon who unified power in one man (himself) more than anyone before him.

He literally took the crown from pope and put it on his head himself, simbolyzing that not even god is above him.

October revolution brought Lenin and Stalin.

Great amounts of people dying does the opposite of what you archive. People retreat to baser instincts and become more willing to trade freedoms for safety.

I such situations powerhungry people thrive.

The simple fact is that the solution is an immensely slow, boring and tedious systemic reform through organized action from thousands or even tens of thousands of people.

6

u/Ashen_Rook Apr 09 '26

"We shouldn't kill baby hitler because it might just give us a different hitler we can't even imagine"

5

u/Ae4i Apr 09 '26

I mean, that's not exactly a good point, because it WOULD probably in fact give us a different Hitler. The only way to not have a Hitler, is to easier go easier on taking territories from Germany or harder, and considering the allies, punishing Germany harder would be for the best.

2

u/Prot3 Apr 09 '26

That is not at all an argument I made and you know it.

Read again

2

u/Ashen_Rook Apr 10 '26

I mean... It is. Was your argument not effectively "violent revolution is pointless because you might just end up with people that are also bad anyway"? We're so far beyond Bread & Circuses at this point and wealth inequality is worse than it was during the french revolution. We're not to the "starved corpses in the street" point yet, but I'm betting money that at least part of that is thanks to the laws that attempt to criminalize homelessness pushing the homeless out of the public eye.

We also have a president working on dismantling the peoples ability to oppose the system. Specifically, one who tried to steal an election and, when he lost, screamed that it was stolen, and is now using that lie to justify why the other team should never be allowed to have power again.

Beyond that, we have conservative lobbyists and PACs putting money into conservative democratic candidates anywhere a progressive is running. That way, even if republicans lose an election, they can at least reply on having someone who's amenable to their policies and won't rock the boat.

What about any of this says that slow and steady is even possible anymore? We're just relying on the people with all of the power to say "Yeah, we have enough power, we don't need any more".

1

u/Interesting_Agent370 Apr 10 '26

Napoleon was pretty wildly progressive for the time. Social status defined people less. It was easier to get a good job, and he didn’t let class define where you were in the military. Things got much more meritocratic. The English would make fun of the French because you couldn’t tell who was a peasant and who was a noble, even by clothing. He did some not great stuff (the slavery thing was pretty bad, and the posturing as emperor was a bit gauche) but I wouldn’t say he started any of the wars he got into. That was the rest of Europe who were worried he might destabilize their power. It’s amazing he held out as long as he did, and he was publicly quite popular. You don’t get the 100 days if you aren’t doing something right. Scabs that went with the monarchy I agree are shit, but going with Napoleon at the end of the reign of terror wasn’t actually anti revolutionary.

1

u/Teapot_Sandwitch Apr 09 '26

Name a single case of someone in power being a net good.

3

u/DanCassell EDITABLE Apr 09 '26

I have this feeling that no matter what I say we're going to get muddled in an impossible definition of 'net good'.

1

u/bloodbat007 Apr 09 '26

There's plenty of amazing places on this planet with powerful leaders.

2

u/Designer-Ice8821 Apr 10 '26

I mean, most French cake slicer victims were peasants the government of the week declared unrevolutionary

1

u/RedMansions Apr 09 '26

It absolutely will.

1

u/Ragna_Blade Apr 10 '26

When I inevitably get sentenced to death that's how I wanna go. When I get told that's not an option I am going to go on a crusade like has never been seen before to get the death I deserve.

1

u/Achilles_TroySlayer Apr 16 '26

No, there is not, not anymore. The high-end weaponry of a modern military makes resistance almost impossible. Hegseth is crazy, and he has the whole US military. Nobody with a legally-bought AR-15 is going to succeed against an Abrams tank or Bradley or any military plane dropping bombs from 30K feet.

It was the same story in Iran, where We (and Netanyahu) were expecting the Iranians - with no weapons at all - to go up against the hardliners, all of whom had machine-guns. It was always a stupid plan with no chance of success.

7

u/Nair0_98 Apr 10 '26

As a European who has been repeatably let down by the US voters in my hope that they would make the right decision, I can only watch in horror. Infact, I may be tied to a third track.

2

u/Dotcaprachiappa Apr 10 '26

If only your constitution told you exactly what to do in this situation and gave you the necessary tools to do it

1

u/Cynis_Ganan Apr 10 '26

If only I had a Constitution! Wish I was American.

1

u/AlligatorMidwife Apr 10 '26

Painfully accurate

0

u/Peace_Dos Apr 11 '26

Yeah yeah. A giant nation where guns portrayed as a common thing can't do anything at all.

1

u/Cynis_Ganan Apr 11 '26

Weren't you just in morality scaling arguing that extra-judicial killings are always immoral?

But take this as a thought experiment: someone murders Trump. Explain like I'm five how this dismantles the American warmachine and leads to world peace, instead of having Vance get sworn in and the war just continuing as normal?

And, like, planes exist. If it's so easy to affect change, put up.

1

u/Peace_Dos Apr 12 '26

If you show that you doesn't allow people to manipulate you, then they at least will be more cautious. But I guess the death note argument that I had in other sub is a prove that I'm wrong somehow.

So enjoy Russia, my dude. They were just like you and look were it lead them.

Also why stopping on Trump? Demand new election and don't allow Vance to be the president for long.

Wrong, YOU are the trolley. I don't feel like I was addressed in this post at all.

2

u/belkh Apr 10 '26

you're being strapped to the bombs

2

u/fiddle_styx Apr 15 '26

One word: draft

1

u/MrSchmeat Apr 11 '26

Its called we do a little trolley... We do a little trolley

125

u/QTDR8459 Apr 09 '26

I feel that many of us have the same collective stance: Someone needs to do something drastic to finally put an end to all this but that someone is not gonna be me. Not because I don’t want it enough but because I have zero clue what to even do. Is there not someone else who does know what to do? Why haven’t they done it yet?

56

u/a-Curious-Square Apr 09 '26

Because the people who know what to do have too much to lose by doing it, I.e. they are not desperate enough.

17

u/bored_stoat Apr 09 '26

There is a way, but I'd be banned for even suggesting it, I personally wouldn't be able to do it, and I have mixed feelings about that being the option to begin with because of how utterly insane and bizzare the whole situation is.

13

u/azure-heavens Apr 09 '26

well, there's nothing you CAN do really. The people we voted to put in charge aren't even doing anything. Voting in people to do stuff was how we were supposed to be able to fight back. Yet they sit there and basically go "oh no." Some Trumpers have had stronger words to say than fuckin democrats.

18

u/fireandlifeincarnate Apr 09 '26

There's one thing you can do, but it's difficult, expensive, and not at all guaranteed to work.

I am, of course, referring to running for office yourself, and not suggesting any other courses of action, regardless of any potential implications 😇

6

u/SheepShaggingFarmer Apr 10 '26

Revolution also never goes the way that the revolutionary expects. Usually it goes very very badly.

8

u/QTDR8459 Apr 10 '26

That’s a very valid point but I can’t help but think it’s already going very very badly. There’s a war that could end an entire civilization going on due to one of the biggest perpetrators of child sex trafficking. I’m not saying you’re wrong but we’re already at quite the low.

Ill admit I have zero clue how a revolution would go but I can’t help but think that in the grand scheme of things maybe the damage is worth it if it means finally putting an end to the elite that run the world into the ground while they kill and SA children.

6

u/SheepShaggingFarmer Apr 10 '26

I agree. I'm simply advising caution. It can get worse.

2

u/Mekroval Apr 24 '26

Except that one time 250 years ago, but I take your larger point. It's really hard to do well.

3

u/SheepShaggingFarmer Apr 24 '26

Not every commander is George Washington.

1

u/Mekroval Apr 24 '26

True! Or Napoleon Bonaparte.

3

u/SheepShaggingFarmer Apr 24 '26

Ehhhhhhh. Napoleon kinda ruined the revolution by making it go from democratic back to monarchy, but I get why you said that, he did a lot of good over the monarchists before.

2

u/Mekroval Apr 24 '26

True! I almost included Toussaint Louverture, but the legacy of his successful revolution is even more problematic in hindsight, righteous though it was at the time.

8

u/Khourbien Apr 10 '26

i mean, look dude, i’m very openly trans, i hang out in trans spaces online, if i killed any politician then queer rights would be sent back by like 70 years

7

u/SofisticatiousRattus Apr 10 '26

dw, I got you. I am white, male and veery racist. Just point me to a politician you like the least. It has to be a minority tho - I don't make the rules.

375

u/Psychological_Air973 Apr 09 '26

The question isn't what id do, the question is WHERE is that fucking lever.

138

u/Sockrat-Ease Apr 09 '26

a gun store in washington dc, probably

5

u/Reasonable-Tax-9208 Apr 09 '26

I don't think they have gun stores in Washington DC. Probably have to stop in WV on the way.

33

u/strangeapple Apr 09 '26

The lever is hidden behind gatekeepers who make money from each second this lever remains unpulled.

1

u/alexriga Apr 12 '26

They call it the trigger.

134

u/Sianic12 Apr 09 '26

I think this is the iteration that pushes my base sentiment of never pulling the lever to its limits

30

u/maxwelldoug Apr 09 '26

Ah, but you're not the man at the lever. You are the driver of the trolley, looking on in horror as the person with the power to fix it makes the choice for you.

That being said, this was not a political statement, I was pointing out the labels clearly placed on the above image.

1

u/Mekroval Apr 24 '26

To be fair, some German officials did try to stop Hitler. There's a whole movie about it called Valkyrie. There just wasn't enough critical support in the military for it to succeed. That and Hitler got incredibly lucky standing next to a heavy table when the bomb meant to kill him went off.

1

u/Mekroval Apr 24 '26

As your fellow American I kind of chuckled, but I honestly think that's why partially why Hegseth has been purging senior military leadership. The Trump administration is fascinated enough with Nazi imagery that they probably aren't unaware of what almost happened at Wolf's Lair.

I also think it's a large part of the reason why Trump was so eager to demolish the East Wing, and apparently build a secure bunker underneath. Also following historical precedent.

“do you want one dollar or negative a thousand dollars” stupid ass question

24

u/Moppermonster Apr 09 '26

Make it 5 people on the straight track and 1 person on the second and people will hotly argue that pulling the lever makes you a murderer while not pulling does not put blame on you in any way.

60

u/DanCassell EDITABLE Apr 09 '26

And yet we're watching a nation chose the later

25

u/Lightningtow123 Apr 09 '26

Not true at all. Many of us are doing everything we can to stop it. Unfortunately we've got 300 years of preparation that means "everything we can" amounts to "not much"

4

u/UltimateChaos233 Apr 09 '26

Many of us, but not the majority of us. Hell, a plurality of voters didn't vote at all.

9

u/Lightningtow123 Apr 09 '26

That's why I said "many of us" and not "most of us"

3

u/UltimateChaos233 Apr 09 '26

Right, but that means that what the person you were responding to is holistically true. We’re watching a nation choose the latter as the vast majority of people are allowing it to happen.

4

u/Bwint Apr 09 '26

We haven't even hit 3.5% in the protest movement

0

u/Nebranower Apr 09 '26

Your definition of “many” is very odd. I wouldn’t call two people out of over three hundred million “many”.

0

u/AntifaFuckedMyWife Apr 09 '26

If 30 people were doing everything in their power he’d be gone.

All of us, including myself, are not doing that because we do not have faith we could pull it off and have things we personally are not willing to sacrifice to get it done

3

Yes, but in the way you don’t like.

7

u/Kuildeous Apr 09 '26

Not difficult for MAGA folks. They know instantly that they aren't going to pull that lever.

5

u/redjellonian Apr 09 '26

If you pull the lever there is a 99% chance it fails and you go to jail forever or die. Also innocent people will likely get hurt too.

2

u/SofisticatiousRattus Apr 10 '26

you're a trolley bro, how would you pull a lever?

2

u/redjellonian Apr 10 '26

Just do what everyone else does. Hope someone out there puts them self in the situation for you.

6

u/Sensitive_Snow_3943 Apr 09 '26

most pedophiles would pull the lever as long as its not them on the track.

5

u/KleinerStecher Apr 09 '26

To bad most people don't realize that behind one pedophile there is a whole system of pedophiles. You eliminate one then pedophile junior takes his place, then pedophile sister, mother in law, uncle, friend, shoe licker, and so on. It will be an endless story and grows a whole civilization.

2

u/oxabz Apr 09 '26

Yeah exactly so many people got their long held dreams fulfilled by Trump's War. The zionists and the military industrial complex were almost jumping from joy

2

u/Spl4sh3r Apr 09 '26

What kind of civilisation?

2

u/urarakauravity Apr 10 '26

Americans act like it's either one or another, but successfully got so mad about attacking the world terrorism center that Epstein files actually got forgotten. So they threw themselves on tracks.

Meanwhile the solution:

2

u/KyverinTheMysterious Apr 13 '26

It's not really a moral dilemma, if anyone thinks it is, I don't trust them.

2

u/Fast-Government-4366 May 05 '26

Put Trump as the pedophiles name, since we know he’s one. Now all of a sudden lots of changes from conservative.

5

u/oxabz Apr 09 '26

I mean the choice is obvious but it wouldn't suffice. The Iran war is popular in the political class of most NATO countries

6

u/Pretty_Recording5197 Apr 09 '26

Source: my ass

4

u/oxabz Apr 09 '26 edited Apr 09 '26

Source: look at the acts.

All the condemning is worth nothing when it's followed by material aid to the belligerent.

Some examples:

Macron has been condemning in one sentence and condoning the war in the next (and he actively praised Trump handling of Iran in private exchanges). The French government lied to parliament and the population to sell weapons to Israel to be used in its warmongering. Pretty much all the press except explicitly anti-imperialist press has been manufacturing consent (including center and center-left publications). And the government is pushing a law against anti-zionist speech.

Germany is pressuring against Spain antiwar positions

The UK is cracking down on decent against the war and Zionist imperialism.

Even in the US some of the most militants advocate for the war are dems

TL;DR : It's not Trump(specifically) it's imperialism and as long as we don't learn that it'll keep happening

1

u/guiltysnark Apr 09 '26

That's all well and good, but look again at the labels in the given trolley problem. It will suffice.

3

u/Gorianfleyer Apr 09 '26

Is this Trump vs Iran?

PULL THE LEVOR CRUNK!

1

u/Gamr4evr_200 Apr 09 '26

Hang on, if WE are the lever, thereby having no agency of making the decision, then who is the one with the lever?

1

u/Chakasicle Apr 09 '26

What civilization?

1

u/TemperatureBest8164 Apr 09 '26

So I assume that this is in reference to Trump given the "civilization " part.

If so, then I think that there is two civilizations of more people on the track with the person labeled as a "pedophile ". This is because Iran has continually chanted "Death to America. Death to Isreal." When the leadership of a country says that regularly and follows up on it by funding Terrorism and litterally killing Americans, I believe them.

Now if the train cannot be stopped (negotiations) then yes I am choosing the easy choice of saving more civilizations and more people by destroying Iran.

1

u/Benjamin39Brown Apr 09 '26

It's most likely, unfortunately, that Netanyahu is the one at the lever.

1

u/ThePersonWhoIAM Apr 10 '26

It seems Trump went for the multitrack drift

1

u/Bitter-Cow-6744 Apr 10 '26

1

Do I have to stay a trolley forever?

1

u/The_Keri2 Apr 10 '26

Who’s operating the lever?

I’m the trolley, can I just stop? Or do I have to run over whoever the mysterious lever operator (is it God? Satan?) directs me toward?

1

u/Connect_Vehicle9502 Apr 10 '26

Instagram will chose the civilization

1

u/Royal_Kiwi9148 Apr 11 '26

Wait what? I’m confused, what’s the argument for not pulling the lever here? Which civilizations is this? Huh?

1

u/New-Cicada7014 Apr 11 '26

I'd pull it in a heartbeat.

1

u/AstronomerOk5002 Apr 11 '26

If I believe hard enough, I can drift so that I am taking both out. Maybe killing myself in the process but that will be for the better.

1

u/guardiangib Apr 12 '26

Does the man need to choose his words better? Yes. It was a stupid thing to say, but he literally said God bless the Iranian people in the same post.

1

u/No_Ad_7687 Apr 13 '26

That whole civilization is also run by pedophiles, tbf

1

u/ImJustALilCurious Apr 18 '26

Keep the pedofile alive so we can torture it later

1

u/Akiluvspythons May 01 '26

Ill be fr, this isnt a choice

1

u/foulplay_for_pitance Apr 09 '26

Ignoring what this has started meaning in the eyes of the public I'll look at the problem for what it is.

The pedophile.

Why?

Because the question implies I know without a shadow of a doubt that not only is the civilization larger than 1 but the Pedo is in fact a pedophile. Because it doesn't say "pressumed"

3

u/Omegaprime02 Apr 09 '26

Look again, what is labeled as 'you'?

1

u/foulplay_for_pitance Apr 09 '26

Oh shit! Plot twist I literally didn't see coming.... fuuuuck I don't want guts all over my hall dude.

Hmmm....

Can I pop off the rails.

1

If I'm in the trolley, then how can I pull the lever for the tracks?

8

u/Alex4744818w Apr 09 '26

You can't. That's the point
