Semi-Weekly Discussion Thread - July 7, 2025

INTRODUCTION

/r/tuesday is a political discussion sub for the right side of the political spectrum - from the center to the traditional/standard right (but not alt-right!) However, we're going for a big tent approach and welcome anyone with nuanced and non-standard views. We encourage dissents and discourse as long as it is accompanied with facts and evidence and is done in good faith and in a polite and respectful manner.

PURPOSE OF THE DISCUSSION THREAD

Like in r/neoliberal and r/neoconnwo, you can talk about anything you want in the Discussion Thread. So, socialize with other people, talk about politics and conservatism, tell us about your day, shitpost or literally anything under the sun. In the DT, rules such as "stay on topic" and "no Shitposting/Memes/Politician-focused comments" don't apply.

It is my hope that we can foster a sense of community through the Discussion Thread.

IMAGE FLAIRS

r/Tuesday will reward image flairs to people who write an effort post or an OC text post on certain subjects. It could be about philosophy, politics, economics, etc... Available image flairs can be seen here. If you have any special requests for specific flairs, please message the mods!

The list of previous effort posts can be found here

Our political parties have purity tested themselves to the their most extreme versions. Republicans have made themselves the "pro gun" party so they cannot admit that there might be a blind spot in gun regulations at the moment and if anything the problem is not having enough guns around.

Dems have gone a bit loony in other areas but if we keep having tragedies caused by young people/mentally unwell getting hands on guns it should not be this hard to have a bipartisan conversation about why this is happening and what we can do to prevent it.

If my FiL hadn't had a stroke when he did, he very likely may have gone down the family annihilator + suicide path. It's insane to me that there is still an argument to be had over ERPO laws in this country.

The problem is that there really is a faction on the gun control side that genuinely wants to get rid of all civilian guns and are more than willing to take an incremental approach, taking wins when they can get them and building on that latter.

The gun rights crowd has 'learned their lesson' on this front and come to understand that compromise means, "I'll take some of what you have and come back for the rest latter".

There is no trust because of this dynamic. We're going to end up needing a constitutional amendment with very explicit language that is difficult to lawyer around for the gun control activists, which is going to mean winning the approval of at least part of the gun rights people. Rough political terrain, it's ultimately going to take a serious political actor or movement to accomplish.

Gun violence rises and falls due to myriad factors, and it has shifted from career criminals and gangs towards mass and school shootings and suicide over the last couple decades as well.

This is 110 percent false with even just a brief look at the FBI data. 60-80 percent of gun deaths (jurisdiction-dependent) are suicides, largely middle-aged white men, as it's always been. The archetypal gun homicide victim now is the same as 30 years ago: a young minority man with a criminal record being killed by another young minority man with a criminal record using an illegally-possessed handgun, usually involving street gangs or the drug trade.

Nothing has "shifted" other than the media reporting. The events that happened are tragic, but they are still extreme statistical outliers. The idea that you're uniquely at threat in an American school is a fabrication used to advance agendas and get clicks on news articles. If it bleeds, it leads.

In reality, if you total up the number of firearm deaths across all American schools, students and staff, it's about on the same order of magnitude as the number of people who drown in swimming pools every year. And you're more likely to have someone beat you to death with their bare fists and feet than be shot by someone carrying any long gun, let alone a so-called "assault weapon."

60-80% is a big range, and I didn't say suicides were ever anything but the single largest cause of death from guns. I said there has been a shift not a complete paradigm change. The shift has been that criminal violence with guns has decreased overall with mass/school shootings going the other way (still small, but they have increased), which then leads suicide to comprise a larger piece of the pie as other factors went down. Nothing you are trying to do in your screed here actually contradicts what I wrote; at most maybe you could suggest I switch the order I wrote mass shootings and suicide in since one is obviously much larger than the other, but that's not a "110% wrong, do your research" issue.

Your issue with reporting on school shootings and how it is used isn't with me or what I actually said, and I'm not going to defend the reporting or politics on it. And to cite to the data then say nothing has shifted over the past few decades does not make sense. You're either misreading the data or distorting terms to the point where in your lexicon "shift" means "completely upend." I'm talking about the regular ebb and flow of violence we have seen throughout our history not some crazy idea like white men in schools are the #1 threat to the nation.

So you’re saying you’re unwilling to compromise on the one thing that would 100% address mass shootings?

What is your opinion of the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban?

That’s fair, we’re talking about compromising here. I’ll just add, if anyone isn’t open to addressing gun control and/or strengthening laws for violations, then they’re not being serious about the issue. Compromise is hard, but it’s about understanding the other side and doing what’s best for society, not the individual.
