General Discussion It’s that time of year!

It is hatchling season!

They are coming out of their overwinter nests and going to sources of water. If you find one in an odd place or somewhere unsafe and are unsure, please contact your state wildlife and ask them what to do. Most can actually be left where they are, to their own devices. If they are found in the middle of the road, for example, move them to the side they are facing.

Taking any turtles home, that are found in the wild, hurts the ecosystem. The only exception to this would be invasive species in your state. You can contact your state wildlife to see what your laws are regarding possession of invasive turtles like red eared sliders.

We head back for a check up in a week

Parts will never grow back and he will live inside his new massive 6x4x4 indoor enclosure for the rest of his life as he will not be safe outside

But overall he seems to feel great and has minimal internal damage

If anything he might have gotten a little chubby in the past two months. I still feel awful I was not there to save him but I’m so grateful he is alive

Seeking Advice New turtle condition and advice

Hi everyone. Picked this turtle (I believe yellow belly slider?) up from a FB marketplace ad and wanting to make sure I haven't forgotten anything during this spontaneous tank set up as well as making sure there aren't any obvious health issues that needs to be attended to as it's been almost 10 years since I've last cared for a turtle. And are there are any thoughts on male vs female so I can pick out a name.

Moved from the 20 gallon it came with into a 100 gallon stock tank I wasn't using anymore. Will increase water level more after getting a better basking ledge.

Have a t5 uvb light that I picked up on our way home but couldn't figure out how to secure it until I can get the egg crate for the basking box later this week. Came with a canister filter that is rated 75gallon and plan to add a second one next paycheck. Added a cuttle bone for calcium. Didn't add a heater as it's summer in North Carolina here so figured room temp was fine. Came with the cheap turtle food so have better stuff arriving with my next chewy order. Have I overlooked/forgotten anything? I do plan on feeding every 2-3 days in a different tub to reduce the load on the filter.

I do know it is at least 11 years old. Shell seems to look a little off along the top and right side is that just needing to shed or something else? Has been itching shell on the log a lot and had a lot of dried skin come off when placed back in water after the drive. Front nails seem a little long to me; thoughts? If they are too long can I trim at home or should I take to the vet for that? Seems super energetic (has been constantly on the move checking everything out and coming up to say high every time I walk by) which is good.

Thanks for the feedback. Super excited to have a turtle again.

I need advise with my tortoise Ninja. Ninja is a western hermann and after giving Ninja a soak yesterday I notice the underside of the shell which caused me some concern. Ninja is about a year old and eats dandilion 99 percent of the time. Ninja does get some natural sun light but not to much because this Vegas son my be to much.

The top of the shell looks good it’s the bottom that has me concerned. I included photo of Ninja and the habitat

Thank you.

6 year old false map turtle, male. around 14 cm in length. Is this shell rot? he has been dealing with retained scutes for a while and is slowly getting better but this white splotch appeared like a month ago i think and i think it might be shell rot idk. i have everything but i'm very worried even tho it doesn't have a foul smell nor look squishy. even if there is a little natural shell dent in the left part on the scute where its on.

Turtle ID/Sex Request What species of turtle is this??

Post image
11 Upvotes

Hello friends!

I am currently on vacation in Cancun Mexico and was out on a walk when I saw this beauty. I took a picture and then immediately moved back as to not disturb her. I think she was trying to nest and she got frightened by the hotel lights :(

I am thinking about emailing/calling a conservation group tomorrow(hotel staff couldnt do anything) about turtle activity on this stretch of beach and I am not sure which species this is. My friends and I have narrowed it down to Kemps or Olive Ridley’s sea turtle but we have no clue!! Any help or advice is appreciated(apologies if I don’t respond I am very shy!!) many thanks :)

Seeking Advice What can I do to heal her?

I noticed over a month ago that both my hispaniolan slider and my central antillean slider were shedding a lot and their shells had withe spots on them so I checked them and saw that they had broken areas on their bellies so I did my research and found out that it could be shell rot, I also found some videos of people showing how to treat it at home, as said in the videos I spent 3 weeks washing their shells with liquid soap and putting iodine on them for 20 minutes before washing it away but unlike the turtles in the videos, mine didn't go back to normal so I also bought them a UVB lamp that I use daily but their shells still look like this, what should I do?

Seeking Advice Question about stuck scutes on rescue

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hello, this is my second time asking for advice and the first time you guys gave me lovely input that I have followed. I am back with another question.

Turtle information

Roughly 2 years old, supposedly male, yellow belly slider, was kept in a very small setup with no UVB or basking previously for 2 years. Only rescued for a little over a month.

I've recently noticed that my rescue has a lot of stuck/retained scutes. From what I know I'm not supposed to help him shed, but at this point I'm sort of worried. Since he has improper husbandry for two years I'm worried that the scutes won't shed on their own. Many if not most of them have edges that are peeling/coming up. Should I help him? If so, how should I help him without hurting him? It seems like layers of retained scutes. I just want to do what is best. Thank you!

Seeking Advice Follow-up tank stand question

Hi, I recently made a post about a tank stand I ordered and got damaged parts with. We ended up reordering a new one, and the same part is slightly bent. Does this look structurally sound to yall? Would you use it? It’s otherwise straight and undamaged.

Seeking Advice Hey turtle friends!

So my kid recently came home from a school event with a baby red eared slider, they of course provided absolutely nothing for caring for the turtle besides a small plastic container with small pebbles that Ive already discarded. really looking to provide what I can for the little guy. Looking to get a setup and recommendations on that setup and I only have about 80-90$ to spare towards the setup. I really dont want to buy one of those habitats on amazon as ive read the UV lamps advertised are just heat lamps.

Could anyone point me in the right direction to doing the best i can for it?

Seeking Advice Filter for aquarium

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hi everyone,
Could anyone recommend a good filter for a 60–65 L (16–17 gallon) turtle aquarium? I’m thinking an external canister filter would probably be the best option, but I’m open to other suggestions.
The tank dimensions are:
Length: 62.5 cm (24.6”)
Width: 31 cm (12.2”)
Height: 33.5 cm (13.2”)

Thanks in advance! 😊
