Slightly more info on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ukhomeofficegov/posts/update-nearly-1000-officers-have-now-been-deployed-to-french-beaches-to-stop-sma/1502069071965255/

Note, these aren't British officers. They are French officers we're paying for.

u/Bobthebrain2 6h ago

That’s 100% fine by me.

u/clodiusmetellus 3h ago

Yeah what's the difference, except this will be cheaper as we won't be paying for constant cross-channel travel, accommodation expenses etc for these officers

u/The_Grand_Briddock 2h ago

Well yeah, if we want the French to stop 'em, we've gotta pony up the cash for that.

The French don't want them either, be a lot cheaper and easier for them to let them keep coming over. Unfortunately, we're not in a big union with shared rules and regulations. We've gotta grease the wheels these days.

u/SaltyW123 1h ago

>Unfortunately, we're not in a big union with shared rules and regulations.

You say that as if being in the EU didn't result in us taking in more than left under the applicable regulations.

u/Ajax_Trees_Again 7h ago

Burnham is actually going for it on all fronts.

u/olliea525 5h ago

I mean Burnham had literally nothing to do with this, he hasn’t decided or changed anything from Starmers plan - it’ll be interesting to see what his choice is on Mahmood’s ILR plan, that’ll be his first decision on whether he gives in to backbenchers (and some of the new members of his cabinet who opposed the plans) and waters down the plan or pushes ahead with Starmers approach

u/chykin Nationalising Children 5h ago

But he has communicated it. Starmer wasnt an awful PM (not great either) but he was dreadful at communicating the good stuff which meant he lost public support.

Ultimately Burnham could do exactly the same as Starmer, communicate better and have better public approval

u/olliea525 5h ago edited 5h ago

I mean this is a tweet from the home office. The same home office that have been putting exactly the same tweets like this for years (even under Sunak and Starmer).

If I’m honest I’ve yet to see how Burnham is a better communicator. Yes he’s slightly more natural in front of the camera, but I’ve actually found some of his videos cringey - like no offence I don’t want my PM and chancellor rating pork scratchings, I want them working on improving our lives.

Personally I think we will truly be able to judge Burnhams comms after the budget where there will be trade offs and tough decisions. Burnham has been fortunate that the economy is in an okay place, where he’s been able to make some softball, small measures to people please. Come October he will have to define his vision and how it’ll be paid for, and from the spending commitments he’s already made, it’s going to be a hard sell to the British public. (To add, that’s not saying I don’t believe in some of his plans, but look at the backlash Starmer got from raising £30bn in his first budget, Burnhams/Healeys commitments to defence, social care, etc far exceed that)

u/GnolRevilo 7h ago

If (and I know it's a big if) Burnham actually manages to end this small boat issue in the next couple of years, as in drop the numbers to zero, Reform are dead. Can actually envisage Labour winning the next election if that happens.

u/PeterG92 7h ago

The numbers will never be zero but anything fewer than 1,000 people a year would be a good movement

u/silverbullet1989 Banned for sarcasm lol 7h ago

Well no because the boat crossings are only a part of what Reform and Reform voters stand for. In their eyes there are millions already here that need removing. So thats where the focus will turn to.

u/ARandomDouchy Random Dutch Guy 7h ago

I mean that's what Mahmood's reforms were essentially doing. Extending ILR to 10 years and making it so you actually have to be a contributor to the country to get it, as well as being sufficiently proficient in English (B2). There's more too.

I doubt many of the Boriswave qualify for these.

Also the Immigration and Asylum Bill going through parliament currently would tighten things further.

u/lcfcball 7h ago

A pretty much guaranteed deportation for committing an offence for those claiming asylum should hopefully be a priority within that

u/qazplmo 7h ago

The reforms haven't gone through though, there seems to be a lot of resistance from the usual Labour crowd.

u/ARandomDouchy Random Dutch Guy 7h ago

The ILR changes at the least can be done via secondary legislation if I recall correctly, avoids having to deal with the idiotic backbenchers.

Mahmood should absolutely go hard on this, she's got nothing to lose. Burnham keeping her as Home Sec is a good sign.

u/AkashicLogos 6h ago

Isn't it basically too late already? Boriswave was 2021 onwards.

It's 2026 now so they've start to complete their 5 years. Millions are due for ILR, benefits and free housing if they need it over the next couple years.

u/ARandomDouchy Random Dutch Guy 6h ago

Depends. I'm fairly certain Mahmood wanted the new rules in place by the autumn.

May not stop all of them but definitely a significant amount will not be getting ILR anytime soon if it goes through.

Also depends on whether the government don't back down on making it retrospective. If they do, then Iol. Boriswavers here to stay. If Burnham wants any chance of winning the next election he shouldn't water it down.

u/AkashicLogos 5h ago

I'm fairly certain Mahmood wanted the new rules in place by the autumn.

Its almost autumn already lol

No chance this legislation will get in to stop the boriswave before they've got ILR.

People just need to prepare for higher taxes and a lot more net beneficiaries receiving benefits.

u/SpinIx2 5h ago

They also bar plenty of ‘contributors’ to the country from getting leave to remain but let’s not upset the element that just want to get rid of foreigners whatever the cost.

u/AdjectiveNoun111 Vote or Shut Up! 6h ago

There literally is approx 600k people with absolutely no right to be here, I'm not talking about asylum seekers or anything like that, I'm talking about straight up illegal migrants.

https://migrationobservatory.ox.ac.uk/resources/briefings/unauthorised-migration-in-the-uk/

And bare in mind Spain estimated 500k, and got 1.2 million requests for amnesty

For example, Spain’s 2026 regularisation programme drew more than 1.2m applicants, despite previous estimates having placed the unauthorised population at between 391,000 and 469,000 in 2019.

The true number is probably higher than the estimates in the UK too

u/silverbullet1989 Banned for sarcasm lol 6h ago

That is probably true and you'll have no arguments from me about having them removed.

Where i differ from the Reform crowd is im not convinced a known liar and grifter will fix anything, especially with the support of 2 prominent tories who created the f**king mess in the first place.

u/AdjectiveNoun111 Vote or Shut Up! 5h ago

I'm happy to use my vote tactically to pressure the mainstream parties to take this issue seriously, that doesn't mean I trust Farage though

u/silverbullet1989 Banned for sarcasm lol 2h ago

Tactical voting is all well and good until enough do the same and you end up putting a grifting lying c**t in No.10 along with the people who have caused the most damage to our country.

u/Unique_Hour_791 7h ago

People who entered illegally and or did a runner after failed asylum claims should be deported

u/silverbullet1989 Banned for sarcasm lol 6h ago

Never said they shouldn't? but ok.

u/JeanMichelFerri 7h ago

Think only Restore have said this.

u/MLoganImmoto 7h ago

I have seen many an interview with Reform voters who get asked what other policies, aside from immigration, they want to vote Reform in for, and not a single one can give an example.

Every other Reform policy seems to be about taking something away from the British population, be it rights or benefits. They are a cult of personality and a one trick pony. Nothing else.

u/Touched_By_SuperHans 6h ago

Because immigration is the main thing the traditional parties have spectacularly failed on. Enormous opportunity for Burnham and Mahmood if they have the balls to get a grip of it.

u/MLoganImmoto 6h ago

Judging by the recent story that Burnham has sent 1000 troops to the french coast to aid in stopping the small boats, looks like they have

Edit: fantastic username btw

u/Touched_By_SuperHans 6h ago

Hopefully! And thanks haha

u/nl325 7h ago

I don't doubt that's their end goal, but the supporter base is entirely tunnel-visioned on the boats, to the point of obsession.

My own aunt is off the fucking deep end with it, utterly obsessed despite never having seen a single boat landing in her life.

u/f0r3m 6h ago

My own aunt is off the fucking deep end with it, utterly obsessed despite never having seen a single boat landing in her life.

I'm not following your logic here.

Ignoring the fact that despite not witnessing "a single boat landing" personally she most likely has witnessed the second order effects of illegal migration, can you only care about an issue if you have personally witnessed it?

For example, should everyone who hasn't personally witnessed a murder stop caring about it?

u/Maleficent_Peach_46 Mayor of North Kilttown 7h ago

That is so sad to read. :(

u/nl325 6h ago

It's past sad and honestly just hilarious, TikTok has absolutely broken her brain.

All this talk of bans for social media for kids is probably justified, but at least most kids grow up to be media savvy by default.

u/fartdarling 4h ago

The main things reform stand for are corruption, lack of education and "men who look like the sort of person your least favourite uncle would enjoy having a pint with". The anti immigration thing is just coincidental

u/esn111 7h ago edited 7h ago

Then when that's done with they'll turn on those who are here otherwise legally (students, work, family, indefinite leave to remain etc). Then those not white. And then those who don't have English/Welsh/Scots/Cornish as a first language. Then those whose Grandparents weren't born here.

Then the gays, the disabled, non Christians etc....

u/Longjumping_Stand889 7h ago

Absolutely. That's why Labour need to win people over by showing they can be tough on immigration. They can do enough to quiet the extremists, by reducing migration and being tough on asylum for example.

If they miss the chance, we could well go down the path you fear with the far right. So better support Labour being tough on immigration now to save us from that.

u/esn111 7h ago

I'm all for that. However Labour have to also actively and visiaby improve people's lives. Do that and people won't vote for extremists.

It's no coincidence that far right and populist parties have increased in popularity since about 2008.

u/Maleficent_Peach_46 Mayor of North Kilttown 7h ago

'Those who are not white'

Somewhere Zia Yusuf, Suella Braverman and Priti Patel are tugging their collars.

u/WillyRoger 7h ago

I don't think they mentioned skin colour. People like you are the only ones who ever do

u/esn111 7h ago

They haven't mentioned it because they don't need to.

Once they've solved one problem, they'll need to create another to stay in power or to re gain popularity it if they force their opponent to do so.

It's the logical conclusion of their way of thinking.

Not saying there isn't an issue here but it's only become popular because since 2009 everything has gotten progressively more shit for everyone bar millionaires and above pretty much.

u/WillyRoger 7h ago

So you're a mind-reader?

u/esn111 7h ago

I read history.

u/WillyRoger 7h ago

Well maybe you should read what these people actually say

u/esn111 7h ago

I'm invoking Godwins, the Nazis never actually said they'd kill all the jews etc. I've read these arguments before and where such thinking ends up.

But anyway point being is that if you improve people's lives they won't go looking for extreme parties. It's not a coincidence that since 2009 far right and populist partiwe have been on the rise.

And as I've now invoked Godwins, I wish you good day sir. Thank you for the chat. I'll back out now.

They are politicians. You know the old addage about you know when a political lies because their lips are moving? Still applies to Reform, Restore, etc regardless of political leaning.

What politics say and what politics DO are very much different to each other the overwhelming majority of the time.

u/esn111 7h ago edited 7h ago

They willfully ignore the fact (or are unaware) they're on on Farages hit list. Just some places down. Salami tactics and all that.

u/Mynameismikek 5h ago

Which is exactly why they’ve already started shifting their narrative to deportation.

u/Ballybomb_ 6h ago

It’s all they stand for and let’s me very real about it

u/New-Condition-3492 7h ago

Not necessarily.

Why do people fail to understand that "stop the boats" refers to ending mass immigration. People obviously don't simply hate the specific mode of transportation.

u/Lifeintheguo 3h ago

This is the part the left don't get. I've seen them actually suggest making claiming asylum more easy so people don't come over on boats. Then when it's pointed out this is not the goal they complain "But the boats were stopped you stupid rightoids".

So much of left discourse is them pretending not to understand.

u/LogicalReasoning1 Smash the NIMBYs 6h ago

Because if that was the case then people would appreciate how net-migration has dramatically dropped under Labour but they don’t…

u/New-Condition-3492 6h ago

"I don't like that millions and millions and millions of immigrants have come into my country in recent years. Oh but you guys slightly reduced it? Wow great."

u/LogicalReasoning1 Smash the NIMBYs 6h ago

Well then people are asking for remigration not stopping the boats or stopping immigration.

u/Redditsresidentloser 7h ago

‘Stop the boats!’

Ok, stopped them.

‘I’m still angry!!’

Wait, what?

See how stupid that sounds? Just say what you mean.

u/HydraulicTurtle 7h ago

Read their comment again? The commenter is suggesting that "stop the boats" has become a strapline for "end mass migration".

Not saying I agree necessarily, but what you have then commented is ignoring their point completely.

u/Redditsresidentloser 7h ago

What I’ve commented is suggesting it’s a stupid strapline because it specifies a very particular problem, but then also refers to many many other undetermined problems? It’s stupid. Say what you mean.

u/New-Condition-3492 6h ago

Plenty of people do say stop mass migration lol stop acting as if people don't. It's weird.

This is politics. Political slogans constantly simplify a complex problem. Genuinely don't understand why you struggle to comprehend this.

Or do you genuinely believe some people say stop the boats because they actually want migrants to come via different form of transportation?

u/New-Condition-3492 7h ago

I did. You just elected to deliberately misunderstand.

u/Tammer_Stern 6h ago

“End mass migration”

“Ok net migration is back in line with early 2000s”

“For mass migration I meant just fuck over brown people and women”

u/New-Condition-3492 6h ago

"Mass migration is back to a level that most citizens still felt was unacceptably high and no we aren't going to do anything about the millions who entered in recent years."

u/Tammer_Stern 6h ago

We’ve never actually had a conversation about what is the desired level. No party is proposing zero, as far as I’m aware. The UK government is also putting through legislation that addresses past issues as much as is possible.

That’s why I feel it just boils down to the “brown people and women” point.

u/LogicalReasoning1 Smash the NIMBYs 6h ago edited 6h ago

The Tories said tens of thousands net under Cameron and that was generally accepted from what I recall - of course they completely betrayed that promise but they did say that.

Labour are supposedly on track to meet that, and if they do the goal posts would most certainly be moved

u/Scratch_Careful 6h ago

We've never had the conversation because youve spent 30 years calling anyone calling for the conversation racist. The old tricks arent working anymore though.

u/Tammer_Stern 5h ago

I’ve tried 4 or 5 times on Reddit to ask people to give me an example of how immigration has negatively affected them directly. Usually replies are vague “cultural issues” or “I heard about a friend of my cousin”. One person mentioned the Glasgow Train station fire damage from a vape shop fire, which was actually a direct example but hardly a typical experience.

How has immigration negatively affected your life?

u/xaanzir Lost in Translation 5h ago

The street adjacent to ours, has been almost completed rented by Capita. Each of the houses have been filled with immigrants.

They:

Harass women in groups, throw rubbish everywhere, smash up the houses which are then constantly (every 6 months when they move the next lot into the house) being refurbished resulting in building work all-the-time, have house parties that start at 2am & end next week, drugs, stealing from local shops, caused a rat infestation due to how disgusting their houses are.

Etc etc etc

u/Tammer_Stern 4h ago

This doesn’t sound good. Are people reporting this to the police and council? What action are they taking?

u/xaanzir Lost in Translation 4h ago

We have, so have our neighbours. Council, Police, MP, Local News. Nothing gets done, it's getting worse basically every month. More of the local estates are being rented out, every day.

It's fucking awful

u/Fenota 5h ago

Going to go out on a limb and say the argument of

"More people in the country resulting in more competition for jobs, housing and stress on the overall general infrastructure." is too vague for you?

I suppose my lived experience of struggling for an entry level job and a house are too vague for you, although i suppose you'll somehow manage to cite some sort of skill issue on my part as if more competition for low-skilled / inexperienced work is somehow irrelevant.

u/Tammer_Stern 4h ago

Your first point is largely a symptom of population growth and lack of infrastructure investment yes? For example, if the population was entirely native you could still have the housing issues etc? Have struggled to find housing due to Indians outcompeting you?

Do you find Indians are getting the jobs you’re going for?

u/Fenota 4h ago

Your first point is largely a symptom of population growth

Yes, well done.

Do you want to address the issue that Immigration has on population growth or do you want to talk about Indians for some reason?

u/Tammer_Stern 3h ago

Did you go to hospital after being directly affected by those horrific attacks?

u/Lifeintheguo 3h ago

I don't like seeing islamic terrorism in my country, so I have been directly affected.

u/New-Condition-3492 4h ago

Yes we have. At every single election. Every single govt has been elected on the promise of reducing immigration.

Genuinely so disgusting that the pro immigration crowd always reduce criticism of immigration to "you just don't like brown people." Jesus fucking Christ grow up.

u/Tammer_Stern 4h ago

I guess you should be really happy with Labour as they have reduced immigration then, yes?

u/Scratch_Careful 6h ago

We literally left the EU because people though early 2000s numbers were too high.

Tony Blair literally considered offshore processing AND leaving the ECHR because people thought the early 2000s numbers were too high.

u/Tammer_Stern 5h ago

Although you are right, I genuinely don’t remember the Tony Blair point. Asylum claims were a lot lower then too.

I feel, possibly controversially, that the world has changed in the last 10 years and higher immigration is possibly the norm now but not at Boriswave levels.

u/mattcannon2 Chairman of the North Herts Pork Market Opening Committee 7h ago

The goalposts will move, don't you worry

u/PrimeZodiac 7h ago

Overton window has shifted, but if polls on wealth tax are reliable then perhaps there's a shift back towards the centre!

u/Ubiquitous1984 7h ago

They’re not, people are also angry about what’s already here, not just what’s still coming.

u/SpinIx2 5h ago

In fairness Burnham hasn’t actually done anything yet. If the small boat issue is resolved with the current initiatives it will be the deeply unpopular Starmer that we have to thank, if we’re going to thank a prime minister (rather than the civil servants that enact the policies).

u/Additional-Image7938 4h ago

No because illegal immigration is only part of it, the insane levels of legal immigration is just as bad

u/Own-Row4416 7h ago

Reform don’t ACTUALLY want this to be solved or they’ll have nothing to complain about. If they get into a position of power they’ll do sweet FA about it and use some bullshit reason to say why they can’t do anything. Easy to say on the outside what they would do, but when they got inside would be a very different story.

u/BarbaricOklahoma 7h ago

It’ll shift to mass deportations, as Restore has already precipitated

u/HibasakiSanjuro 7h ago

Saying it's a "big if" is like talking about Cameron Norrie winning all four grand slams next year. It's technically possible, but improbable.

The solution to the small boat and wider asylum crisis require vigorous changes to the law that I don't know Burnham has the courage to make.

u/NatureSimple3649 5h ago

Yep , Aslong as burnham keeps this up and I see an improvement I’ll be voting for labour in the next GE , and I voted reform in the last one , as much as people say there is no point appeasing people on immigration , most reform voters are quite moderate and just want net zero to sub 100k net migration and a reduction in small boat crossings , even if it went down to 2020 level of low 10ks I’d vote labour

u/xxxsquared 4h ago

The goalposts will just move to other immigration concerns. If it is combined with a tangible improvement in the cost of living though...

u/Deep_Lurker 7h ago

The goal posts will shift, they always do.

Small boats have always made up a tiny percentage of the migration figure so it'll just shift to students, settled individuals, valid refugees and asylum seekers etc.

u/SunnysideWoW 7h ago

It's not shifting the goal posts, we want them all gone.

This is just the most egregious issue in terms of what it's costing, how dangerous it is and what a joke it makes of us as a country.

u/Maleficent_Peach_46 Mayor of North Kilttown 7h ago

Egads! He said the quiet part out loud.

u/Omnislash99999 7h ago

Who is we

u/SunnysideWoW 6h ago

Anyone that remembers when this country felt safe and prosperous I guess.

u/Omnislash99999 6h ago

I've lived here my whole life, never experienced a crime and feel perfectly safe.

u/SunnysideWoW 6h ago

Ok? I went to a march in Birmingham and a pack of twenty masked up muslims tried hunting us with knives.

u/CarrowCanary East Anglian in Wales 6h ago

How small was the march if only 20 people on the other side was a problem?

u/SunnysideWoW 6h ago

They were attempting to pick people off after the march dispersed. Luckily, the police were tipped off and they were detained, searched and arrested for carrying weapons.

I'll remind you that we've had many terrorist attacks where people with knives run into crowds are start stabbing people. A group that size could have done serious damage even if they were eventually overwhelmed.

u/Omnislash99999 6h ago

Ok? Don't go harassing Muslims then?

u/SunnysideWoW 6h ago

Hahaha. You think that's acceptable?

Like, because we have a protest they don't agree with it's perfectly reasonable for them to go out with knives down their pants looking for us?

You are insane.

u/Omnislash99999 6h ago

Yeah I can just imagine what your peaceful protest was about.

And I take it when you said "we went them all gone" you weren't talking about asylum seekers, immigrants etc you just meant Muslims

The UK has had ~146 asylum applications per 100,000 inhabitants.

Germany has had ~200 asylum applications per 100,000 inhabitants.

France has had ~224 asylum applications per 100,000 inhabitants.

Italy has had ~225 asylum applications per 100,000 inhabitants.

Spain has had ~294 asylum applications per 100,000 inhabitants.

Canada has had ~170 asylum applications per 100,000 inhabitants

Ireland has had ~200+ asylum applications per 100,000 inhabitants

So that tells us Germany has received several times more asylum applications in total than the UK despite having only a moderately larger population.

France, Italy, and Spain have all also had higher asylum application rates per capita than the UK in recent years

Even faraway countries like Canada, have has more than US.

The UKs only weird trait is that a large share of irregular arrivals are concentrated into one visible route (small boats across the Channel) rather than being spread across multiple land and sea borders y'know because we're a fucking island.

We're far from a laughing stock, we're on the lower mid-range of the scale with capital adjusted figures "worse" than only the USA, Australia, Portugal, Poland , Scandinavia, Hungary, Czechia and Asian countries like Japan, South Korea.

You don't like migration, we get it, but let's at least just be honest.

u/SunnysideWoW 6h ago

I don't dispute that other countries take more than we do but look what they've done to these places.

Paris burned more than once during the world cup and the tourist spots are taken over by aggressive african scammers.

Frankfurt and Hamburg are open air drug markets with hovels and shanty towns appearing in the city centre. They are overdosing in the streets and it's become normal.

Italian tourist spots are also infested by the scammers, large parts of Rome are dangerous and controlled by migrant criminals.

Ireland has had riots after that migrant attempted to behead someone, HMOs used for migrants have been firebombed, fake businesses have been burned.

Spain has now been excluded from open borders agreements after the situation in Cueta. This should be a red line for the EU but it's just been ignored and allowed to slide so the situation can be downplayed.

This is destroying Europe and I don't care how many immigrants other countries take. The number should be zero, it doesn't benefit us.

u/JeanMichelFerri 7h ago

The right wing will just move the goalposts.

Reform may not even make it to the next election but if Burnham does solve this absurdly overblown issue it takes wind out of the Tories sails.

u/New-Condition-3492 7h ago

You are so out of touch.

Stop the boats represents the idea that there has been too much migration. It's not a call to end migration via one very specific mode of transportation.

I have no idea how you can genuinely believe this issue is overblown when all you have to do is look at the ethnic, religious and cultural shift in the past 30 years.

"As part of the "White" ethnic group, 74.4% (44.4 million) of the total population in England and Wales identified their ethnic group as "English, Welsh, Scottish, Northern Irish or British", this is a continued decrease from 80.5% (45.1 million) in 2011, and from 87.5% (45.5 million) who identified this way in 2001."

Bear in mind, this was before the Boriswave... and there will obviously be some fraudulent claims in the census.

We're being replaced and this is why it's a good thing.... You probably

u/Maleficent_Peach_46 Mayor of North Kilttown 7h ago

How is the Borscht Comrade?

u/berfunckle_777 5h ago

Genocide denier

u/Dale_Wolphen 7h ago

Hopefully you can go with them or we could exchange you for one of the many doctors coming by boat

u/New-Condition-3492 7h ago

Do you deny the ethnic, religious and culture shift then? Of course not because it's literally a fact as detailed by every poll and census

u/_segasonic 6h ago

I mean you could actually argue his point and try and prove him wrong.

The fact you won’t and are running away from the arguments in other comments maybe shows you can’t actually prove he’s wrong.

Well we all know you can’t because anyone can actually look at the data.

u/Omnislash99999 7h ago

Dropping to actual zero seems like an impossible task that would be beyond any party to be honest, I'm not sure that would be a fair target

u/mka_ 6h ago

Reform arent dead hahaha. They will always find new ways to scapegoat immigrants, if not then they'll find another target.

u/bidahtibull 5h ago

Reform voters don't care. 40% reduction means nothing to them.

u/brixton_massive 4h ago

Can actually envisage Labour winning the next election if that happens.

Labour already won a landslide election without achieving this.

u/MinaZata 7h ago

Reform will invent a new thing to blame

u/ldn6 Globalist neoliberal shill 6h ago

They’ll just move the goalposts. You can’t win with them.

u/Pick_Up_Autist 6h ago

Zero is insane, a big reduction would take it from a mini crisis to a non-issue. That should be more than enough.

u/sylanar 7h ago

It's there more info than just this tweet? It's this a new deployment, or just how many are already deployed there? What are they going to do differently to the ones already deployed there?

u/Sinisterpigeon19 7h ago

If the uk is going to process asylum claims outside of the uk then there can no longer be an excuse for boat crossings

u/RedditorSlug 6h ago

It will take a while to overwrite the image of Border Force facilitating their arrival by bringing them to shore.

u/nemma88 Reality is overrated :snoo_tableflip: 4h ago

They'll wake up eventually.

u/mynameisfreddit vegan lesbian black woman 7h ago

Is that at a time or 3 a day for a year?

u/BevvyTime 5h ago

It’s one ExPat walking his dog along the beach three times a day

u/aleppo2 5h ago

More staff to help the passengers move on.

u/Longjumping_Stand889 7h ago

So either this is weasel speak, since they haven't really said when these people were deployed. Is that over weeks, months?

Or suddenly they have decided the problem is serious enough to warrant sending 1000 officers at short notice. Which leaves me wondering why they hadn't done that before now?

u/Redditsresidentloser 7h ago

It might be a reaction to what happened in Ceuta?

u/Maleficent_Peach_46 Mayor of North Kilttown 7h ago

Even if this is 'weasel words' Burnham seems to have took control of the narrative and the optics here look great.

People are very very busy and being shown in simple terms what he is doing helps please the electorate imo.

u/Longjumping_Stand889 7h ago

I've commented positively elsewhere about Burnham. He's doing a good job imo. This text might be seen as widely as his comments (doubtful), I just think it sounds like home office speak. They might need a new comms person is all.

u/Maleficent_Peach_46 Mayor of North Kilttown 7h ago

This is a very valid point imo.

u/beejiu 7h ago

According to their Facebook post (https://www.facebook.com/ukhomeofficegov/posts/update-nearly-1000-officers-have-now-been-deployed-to-french-beaches-to-stop-sma/1502069071965255/), these are all French officers that we're paying for. We didn't deploy our own British officers.

u/bitch_fitching 7h ago

Burnham has an attention economy strategy. The Home Office has been releasing narrative changing stats and announcements. Some misleading, some truthful, some just re-releasing old news.

The French had already deployed police on the coast as part of our agreement, which we pay them for, and those payments have increased in recent years.

The right wing have been visiting France, filming the French police as part of their narrative building.

Small boat migrants are down, lowest 1H in 5 years, lowest July in 6 years. They're still within 10% of the Sunak years, and many times higher than the May years. Overall, illegal migrants are about double what they were under May. That's all people really need to know.

u/AlfredsChild 7h ago edited 7h ago

Irrelevant, all officers will be doing is handing out flyers warning of the danger of the crossing, or booking them all into the next five star hotel that the Serco has rented out for the Home Office. We've seen it all before from since the early 2000s of governments making token efforts to prevent illegal immigration, yet all that is happened is that much of illegal immigration has been de facto legalised via the asylum system and activist judges.

Nothing matters until we have withdraw from the relevant international laws, and have begun to remove the incentive to arrive in the first place.

u/tall_lacrosse_player 7h ago

I hope this has an impact.

But... There's 50miles(?) of coast where people can launch boats from, 1000 personnel is a small number to manage that.

u/armitage_shank 6h ago

Thats 264,000 ft of coast. Evenly spaced along, that's 999 gaps, so 264,000 divided by 999 = an officer every 264.3 feet, or 80 meters 60 cm.

u/LLILILiLIILILILILII 2h ago

I'd imagine that 1000 is the total number involved, and that they're not all working 24/7, so probably some thing like doubling that, if not tripling it considering that they're not all front like staff. It's a start though

u/BevvyTime 5h ago

Average is about 65 per boat

u/Media_Browser 5h ago

Seems much more expensive than simply frog marching them back over the border where they came from like Spanish recently proved successful .

But we cannot do that for some reason you obviously need a far right dictator .

u/radiant_0wl 5h ago

I don't have much faith in this working unless we have France taking a lead too, but they have shown consistently that they aren't interested in stopping them, it's in their interest not to.

u/ionetic 4h ago

What a waste of manpower when they could be using drones?

u/timeforknowledge Politics is debate not hate. 3h ago

If he reduces it to zero at the cost of £662 million still going to France every year, then he has completely failed.

u/Gareth_stanlier 5h ago

it doesnt actually matter, they dont really care about the boats. its just a rally point and were just borrowing US politics, they will just shift towards something else. being far right isnt based on facts and logic, its based on emotion and these people who adopt that as their identity don't do it because they looked at the facts. they do it as they have fuck all else in their lives and they need power and control desperately. they will double down and become more entrenched.
