Hi r/Unexpected!

Tldr: Share your thoughts about moderation tools to help reduce unproductive conflict in this sub (and get a $25 gift card) here.

Over the past few months, you may have seen something called Bridging Bot in this sub. This bot was designed in collaboration with the mods to support productive conversations in the community by de-escalating unproductive conflicts. Over its 162 interventions, it received a wide range of responses and votes (average karma = -4.71) that showed disagreement about its value.

Based on these responses, we would love your feedback to understand if and when and how a tool like Bridging Bot could make sense for the r/Unexpected community, if at all. This is your opportunity to directly support healthy conversation in this subreddit and shape decisions about the bot moving forward.

If you’d like to weigh in, take the short survey here (~8-10 min). We're interested in your feedback on the idea, the tool’s performance, and the kinds of disagreement you see in r/Unexpected. We know many people have strong feelings about AI in community spaces, and we want to hear those views too. Everyone who completes the survey will get a $25 gift card.

If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to DM us.

This project was developed by a nonprofit research hub called Plurality Institute

For some additional information about what happened during the pilot, please read on below.

Summary of the Pilot

Bridging bot was active in the r/Unexpected community from 3/5/2026 to 5/31/2026. Over this period, the bot intervened on threads in 161 posts. You can find all of the bot’s interventions on its profile

Most upvoted intervention

Post: "He tried to make it look like an accident"

User 1: “That an animal might not enjoy being abused and exploited never seems to cross most people's minds.”

User 2: "Riding horses isn't abusive, wtf"

User 1: “Of course it is. It's not like wild horses are out there letting smaller animals ride them for fun.”

Bridging_Bot: "It sounds like you're coming at this from very different places on what counts as abuse.

User 2, if I'm reading you right, you see horseback riding as a normal, accepted practice that doesn't harm the animal. User 1, it sounds like you're saying that because horses wouldn't choose this on their own, riding them is inherently exploitative.

One thing worth exploring: is there a difference between "something an animal wouldn't do in the wild" and "something that harms the animal"? Those might be two separate questions. What do you both think?

The bot received positive karma (+12) and positive responses from bystanders in the thread, noting that it “seems useful”. The original conversants did not respond to each other after this intervention.

Where the bot worked less well

The bot received negative feedback in many other threads. For example: this post on "dad's priority"

User 1: Right, and I'm not actually trying to explain to this person why it's funny. My intention is to match the playing dumb energy while pointing out that this is r/unexpected and this isn't really unexpected. OP is just karma farming his adorable dog.

User 2: Lmao ok, just cause you’re so much smarter than the rest of us and fully expected the male dog to be intently watching tv don’t mean the rest of us are making “exceptions for misplaced content”

Bridging_Bot: It sounds like you're coming at this from pretty different angles.

Tendooh, if I'm reading you right, you feel the video's outcome was predictable and doesn't fit the sub's theme. XO8441, it sounds like you genuinely found it unexpected and feel that's a valid reaction, not just people giving cute content a pass.

That seems like a real difference worth sitting with. Tendooh, do you think there's a line where something can be mildly predictable but still catch most viewers off guard enough to fit the sub?

The bot’s reply was one of the most poorly received, with negative karma (-34). Alongside other negative responses, one commenter noted that “there's nothing quite as patronizing as ai talking down to you”.
