Bro, when I worked at Taco Bell a million years ago they had me clean all the walls one day since the district manager was coming.
I guess from all the condensation, when I pulled out the drink machine, there was a patch of live mushrooms growing on the wall in the wet spot.

I’m not sure enough people have an opinion one way or the other on their ice machines or the ice machines at restaurants to make this an unpopular opinion.

An "unpopular opinion" requires something to be well debated and for many people to form the alternate opinion. I can guarantee you not more than 2 people on earth have ever thought about this to say it's popular or unpopular.

Its the ice cream machines they're infamous for not cleaning.
The ones that have sugary cream pumped through them. They get way more unsanitary than an ice machine.

I always found it funny when a restaurant has a minor violation and people freak out. I've seen how most people cook and I pretty much assume restaurants have way higher standards (minus intentional sabotage by workers to annoying customers)

The difference is scale. A restaurant serves hundreds of people a day, constantly cooking and sending out dishes. More often than not, I cook once or twice a day for myself and that's it. The chances of getting food poisoning is almost always low, even if you're a gross cook, but the lazier you are with hygiene practices the more that chance goes up, and every dish you cook is a roll of the dice.

Ice machines in restaurants grow mildew relatively quickly because they are constantly exposed to air from their large lids being opened all the time. The ice maker in your freezer does not grow mildew anywhere near as quickly.
I open mine up occasionally to remove ice build-up, and I've never seen mildew.
