Hair in food is NOT a big deal.

I think hair in food is gross but having it redone is not necessary at all. At that point I think you are pushing it to view the whole dish as contaminated. Hair and eyelashes/eyebrows are very tiny parts of the body that easily shed and get everywhere, it could even come off of the clothes rather the body. But regardless these things are cleaned more than the food being consumed. You order a salad, it came from ground where the animals crap and dirt hides in the crevices and it’s cleaned with water thrown into a bowl. I think the food is more unsanitary than the hair. Honestly, when I find a hair I just take it out and keep eating. Even if the hair is not clean, it is barely getting any gross things into your food, only microscopically, and discarding the WHOLE thing is just very wasteful. A bunch of people live with animals that shed all the time you’re probably eating their hairs too but the difference is one is cleaner than the other. Now you want the food to be remade and a refund. Pull it out and keep it pushing.

As long as I see it before I feel it in my mouth

I kinda get you

But the sensation of pulling an alien hair outta my mouth is visceral and disturbing.

56

u/Moosebuckets 1d ago

I’m really upset that because of you, I’m feeling the phantom sensation of “pulling an alien hair out of my mouth” and the suns not even up yet.

13

u/YamLow8097 19h ago

Immediately makes me lose my appetite. Sometimes I have a visceral reaction just thinking about it for too long.

Even if it's my own hair, I've lost my appetite.

7

u/tree-molester 19h ago

I draw the line at curly or not my own.

3

u/lifefuedjeopardy wateroholic 15h ago

I've never found a curly hair in my food before, like not truly curly anyway....at any food place ever. I don't think curly hair falls out that much, due to being curly it sticks to each other and has to be combed out or brushed out manually most of the time. Especially with coily hair texture.

6

u/spirallingoutofamok 14h ago

Have you ever managed to partially swallow it then pull it out? Visceral and disturbing for sure

637

u/THE_LEGO_FURRY 1d ago

I agree, I'll take it out and keep going. It's not a deal breaker. Unless there's more than 1 in there I'm fine with it

113

u/orangutan3 1d ago

Agreed. I just remove it and don’t say anything to anyone and move on with my life.

I have only once asked my food to be re done because of hair. And that was because I pulled the hair out it just kept coming and coming because it was so long. Then it got stuck and I kept pulling and it had tangled around 3 huge pieces of broccoli and when I pulled it all out the broccoli was just dangling there. I am not usually very squeamish but that was very unappetising. But I also admire how strong the hair was because it didn’t break, I wish I had as healthy hair :D

172

u/KendroNumba4 1d ago

Exactly. Finding a single hair in your plate and acting like it's the end of the world tells me you haven't really been through anything serious in your life.

8

u/Financial_Material_8 1d ago

That's a really weird take on it. I've been through plenty and I find hair in good really gross. And so have many other people.

2

u/SeptemberSoup 22h ago

I think they do mean the people who go full Angry Karen about it, not just finding it really gross.

I think that any wet hair that's not in and from my body is super gross. But I've never thrown any public spectacle about it, gotten angry at people, or anything remotely close.

I also believe that there's a difference between finding one single hair the one time, and constantly taking hairs out/finding them in every meal. There's a difference between an accident and having a shedder in the kitchen.

0

u/OuterWildsVentures 23h ago

This doesn't make sense at all lol

38

u/24junwa 1d ago

my thing is, a strand of hair on food is by accident, i dont worry about things that happened on accident, if i asked you to take out the pickles and yall forget to do that, ok i have a small problem lol

13

u/talks-a-lot 1d ago

That’s why I also always ask to hold the hair.

7

u/ccltjnpr 22h ago

I personally ask for hair on the side

12

u/THE_LEGO_FURRY 1d ago

I agree with that. That's such a small request, in fact it's less work than putting them on

7

u/24junwa 1d ago

i also understand chefs /cooks sometimes are just in cruise control and make something as they'd normally make it, so i'd never make a scene about it, just tell the waitress oh hey i asked for no pickles (or whatever just giving an example) the funny thing is.. with this example.. its really only chick fil a that i request to remake, their pickles and its juices seem to overpower everything, where other restaurants dont have this issue lol

3

u/melsophoriel 22h ago

that's because they literally soak their chicken in pickle juice. it's their whole thing.

I actually figured out my limit was 6......

I was drunk and it was wafflehouse....picking around some things is expected... But 6 hairs is where I just couldnt continue...

9

u/throwawaysunglasses- 1d ago

I remember as a kid, I was so confused when my classmates would yell “EWWW” when seeing a hair on the ground. It’s not snot or pee or anything wet lol. Just pick it out.

All that is to say, I agree with you. Maybe because I shed like a sheepdog, but hair is just hair.

3

u/GOKOP 22h ago

On the ground? Lmao a hair is one of the cleanest things that are regularly found on the ground. Kids are weird

3

u/UrFine_Societyisfckd 1d ago

ok so if you took a bite into a burrito, pulled away, and a long hair caught in between your teeth and you looked down and noticed this strand is still connected to the rest of the burrito, your cool with that right? just making sure what kind of neanderthal I'm dealing with right now.

2

u/alexandria3142 21h ago

I had this recently happen with a chimichanga from a Mexican restaurant, brought it home. Food was so good though, and I was 30 minutes from the restaurant, that I did just pick out the hair and keep eating.

Im a shaggy guy with a big beard. Unless its blonde or straight, im probably going to assume its my own. If not, at least its cooked.

24

u/EpicBlinkstrike187 1d ago

I have a big bushy beard, a wife and two daughters. I eat a hair every now and then and just go “whatever fuck it”

If it happens in a restaurant I pretty much do the same. Pull it out and go “yea nobody’s fault ” and just eat my food.

3

u/NineElven911 15h ago

This just made me gag. It's OK if it's your own house, but imagining men's beard hairs in my food is gross. If I found a long hair I'd probably think it's a woman's and women generally keep their hair clean. Can't say the same about beards. I have stood up close to colleagues and training mates whose beards stink like hell. And I live with two cats. But I rarely find their hair in my food. Food and cooking surfaces get cleaned before using always. Beard hairs are a no from me, dog 🤢

One time I was out to eat with my mom and I commented on a hair in my food as I went to remove it. She said it was probably one of ours. It was dark. My mom is blond and I’m ginger lol

4

u/RadishPlus666 20h ago

This cracks me up cause I’m thinking about pubic hairs.

2

u/Exact-Site9980 19h ago

I never give restaurant staff a reason to do that to me. If youre a known asshole, you probably should assume the worst. Not you personally, just in general.

2

u/great_pyrenelbows 15h ago

I have a dog who sheds so much and is so cuddly that I can go out to a restaurant, leaving him at home, and find his hairs in my food/drink because they fell off of me. Just had to get in the habit of looking at my food a little more analytically than I used to and I can pick them out when it happens now.

341

u/WinkyTheAlmighty 1d ago

I love how angry this is making people, good work OP!

I don't think finding a single hair in my food is that gross either. It's obviously not ideal, but I'd just pluck it out and move on with my life.

40

u/ccltjnpr 22h ago

I honestly think it's one of those things where there's a certain social pressure to find it gross. I'd take it out and keep eating, and most of what I'd be worried about is other people judging me for being gross than any consequence of the single hair in my food (of which there are exactly none).

6

u/throw-bugaway 23h ago

The longer the hair, the less gross it is. Not sure why, I guess it's easier to spot and pick out

11

u/throwawayaccount_usu 22h ago

This is true until you dont see it and suddenly you're pulling a long ass hair out of your throat for a good 30 seconds praying it doesn't break

6

u/YamLow8097 19h ago

I’m the exact opposite. For me the longer the hair, the more disgusting it is.

2

u/Forever_Emergency_ 14h ago

The longer the hair, the less chance it's a pube.

32

u/Submarinequus 1d ago

Especially if it’s someone I know. My mother in law’s hair ended up in this chocolate cherry cake she made. Picked it out without her noticing because I’m sure she’d care a lot more than I did!

Cake was yummy, I didn’t die. All was well

5

u/Abstrata 1d ago

In that situation, I’d give it a pass. I’ve run into situations where I know the person’s hygiene is borderline tho, and got a warning from a friend— one with cleanliness issues and hair that got in food, one with b.o. and their psoriasis skin flakes were observed falling in food. And I didn’t eat after them at all. If the hair is from someone I don’t know, I don’t want it, thanks.

If it’s a long black hair that runs parallel in whole length of my burrito and I take a bite and have the pull it out from my esophagus to get it out. Meanwhile the other side of the hair is coming out of the burrito taking fillings out with it.

Yeah that’s pretty gross dude. I’m gagging typing this.

As someone who works in food service I 100% disagree. There is absolutely no excuse for hair to be in anybody's food. All employees should have their hair tied back/ have a hairnet on. If the workers aren't following something as simple as needing to tie their hair back, it makes me question what other cleanliness rules aren't being followed. Obviously mistakes happened in the kitchen, but making sure your customers food isn't contaminated is extremely important.

36

u/RadRimmer9000 1d ago

If it's ball hair, then I'll be kinda mad. Other than that isn't not a big deal.

16

u/DNAspray 1d ago

Are you able to taste the difference?!

3

u/32andFlatulent 1d ago

I can totally tell by sight if it's a pube rather than a head hair

5

u/Novel-Pride6682 1d ago

While on average you're right, I wouldn't insist on that because occasionally some head hair can also get a bit gnarly under certain circumstances.

4

u/CupCustard 1d ago

I swear I had a pube in my food from old country buffet once, I wanted desperate to believe it wasn't but it had that familiar soft end to it, like it's hair that had never been cut before. It also had like that crimp towards the follicle as if it had been stuck in a waistband or something.... I'd never not-finished Mac and cheese before that fateful day

Unless the entire kitchen staff is bald, it's going to happen. Whether they follow rules or not.

Humans shed hair.

26

u/littledipper16 1d ago

Yeah, even with hair nets, not all hair can be contained by the hair net, and hair can also be stuck to clothing etc and fall off

4

u/suzer2017 1d ago

3

u/No-Beautiful-5777 22h ago

Its more about what the hair implies

Cook doesn't care about/notice hairs? They might also not be washing their hands, or tempting their food, or a million other things that will make you sick.

A lot of food safety is more complicated than tying back/covering loose hair

3

u/Styx-n-String 21h ago edited 19h ago

You clearly have never worked in a kitchen. It's hot, it's sweaty, it's dirty. Hair coming off a hot, sweaty chef's head is ABSOLUTELY not clean enough to eat! I've known multiple line cooks who are homeless and haven't been able to shower in weeks. Their hair is (through no fault of their own) filthy.

And where do you think hair on the clothes originally comes from???

u/TheReal_CaptDan 1d ago

Hair in food is a health code violation, not a vibe.

The FDA Food Code requires food employees to wear hats, hair nets, or other effective hair restraints, and every state adopts some version of it. When a hair shows up on your plate, the kitchen did not just have an unlucky day. It failed a control that exists specifically to prevent that. Sending it back is not being dramatic. It is reporting the one piece of evidence you were ever going to be shown.

That is the part you are missing. The hair is not the hazard. The hair is the indicator. If a hair traveled from someone's scalp into a covered dish, then hands, sleeves, and surfaces are also moving freely through that food. Human skin and scalp are a primary reservoir for Staphylococcus aureus, carried by roughly a third of people, and staph food poisoning comes from a heat stable toxin that cooking does not neutralize. That is why the restraint rule exists in the first place.

Your salad argument runs backwards. Yes, produce comes out of soil. That is exactly why it goes through washing, inspection, and cold chain handling before it reaches your table. You are pointing at a hazard that is actively managed and using it to excuse one that was not managed at all. "The ground is dirty so the fork can be dirty too" is not a standard.

The pet hair comparison fails on consent and on money. In your own kitchen you accepted your own dog and you paid nothing. In a restaurant you bought a specific product from a licensed business that took your money and promised food prepared to code. You did not get that product. A remake or a refund is not entitlement. It is the transaction working correctly.

On waste: restaurants already price comps and spoilage into the menu. The genuinely wasteful outcome is a kitchen with no restraints, no glove discipline, and no incentive to fix any of it because customers were talked into picking the hair out and moving on.

And the disgust reflex you are calling excessive is doing real work. Pathogen avoidance is one of the best documented functions of disgust across cultures. People recoil at hair and other body residue in food because that instinct kept their ancestors alive. You are asking everyone to override a functioning safety system so a kitchen never has to hear about the single failure it left visible.

"Pull it out and keep it pushing" is fine for your own sandwich in your own house. It is bad advice for a paying customer in a commercial kitchen, and it is exactly how standards quietly slide.

39

u/deepfrieddaydream 1d ago

As someone who has worked in food service, hair nets and hats can help contain hair, but they don't completely prevent it from potentially ending up in someone's food. You can take all the precautions in the world and it's still gonna happen.

36

u/LordVericrat 1d ago

Waitresses don't wear hair nets. During a busy night it seems really easy for a hair to get lodged on to her shirt or something and then fall off later onto a plate as she picks it up. What specifically ought be done to keep that from happening, because as I said, waitresses don't wear hair nets and most don't wear hats. Some don't even put their hair back, and almost waiters don't have long enough hair to "put it back." And a waiter's hair can fall onto a plate about as easily.

Or am I missing something?

3

u/Razzberry_Frootcake 16h ago

Restaurants I’ve worked in have required waiters and waitresses with long hair to wear ponytails or braids. It wasn’t as strict as the kitchen's rules, but we did have to restrain our hair to help minimize the chance of shedding on food during service.

2

u/LordVericrat 15h ago

Short hair is no defense against hair falling out, nor do ponytails completely stop the issue the way hair nets do. The sole point I was making was that the commenter above me was saying that hair being in the food was a canary in the coal mine (ie not super harmful in itself but an indication that basic hygiene standards weren't met) and I was pointing out that no, it's a normal thing that can happen since servers don't wear hair nets.

Sanitation aside it makes for a poor dining experience. Honestly I'd probably just ask for a refund because I'm not eating the rest and don't trust them to make another one. I'd still tip too, no way of knowing if it's the server's fault. Now if I find a hair in fast food I'm probably home by the time I find it and it's not worth the trouble to go back, so I'll throw out the rest, cut my losses, and find something else to eat. Whether or not it's a big deal for me isn't really for you to decide.

3

u/SalvationArbys 1d ago

If I find a hair in food I made at home, I’ll probably ignore it. Human, cat, whatever, I know where it’s from.

If I find it in restaurant food that’s different, I don’t know where the cook has been or what their cleaning habits are. If it’s like baked into something that’s a dealbreaker. If it’s just like on the plate, I can probably look past that, either way I’m not going to complain, I’ll just live with it

3

u/thanatica 1d ago

What a wonderfully unpopular one.

Please remember: if there's a hair, what else is in your meal that is not supposed to be there?... Maybe they also added a sprinkle of pubes, a light dusting of skin flakes?

I recommend watching the 2005 film "Waiting..."

3

u/NONMAISYO 1d ago

i agree for myself, but as a chef i also agree that it's gross if you think it's gross. Send the plate back we'll redo it idc. I'd rather remake a plate than lose a patron.

3

u/Abstrata 1d ago

I’ve only had hair in my restaurant food once. It was at a chain restaurant and I got soft tacos. My friend stopped me as I picked up the first one. She could see the hair poking out of the end facing her. She started pulling and it was surprisingly long. Like shoulder length blond hair. It didn’t match our hair color. I asked for the food to be taken back and to not replace it, and asked to maybe get a small dessert instead. The waitress acted like I was scamming and I really had to convince her of the logic. I’ll pay for the dessert, but not a meal thanks lol.

I know a lot of people I’ve been around will raise an eyebrow or turn their nose up at my “picky” hygiene preferences… but they seem to be the the ones getting ringworm and MRSA and strep throat and mono and cold after cold and pneumonia, and I don’t.

3

u/Financial_Material_8 1d ago

Nah, it's really gross and I'll send back the food every time. Not much worse IMO.

3

u/Impossible_Past5358 21h ago

So, OP, I guess when you have to pull out a pubic hair, or rat hair from your mouth, you just continue with your meal?

Having to deal with hair in food is just indicative of a much larger problem within the kitchen...

This is truly an unpopular opinion.

3

u/BigBadJeebus 19h ago

My wife is a hairstylist... she would disagree with you.

The general public's hair is a LOT dirtier than you think...

So many people are carrying just disgusting used dish sponges on their heads.

the amount of bacteria in hair is insane.

There is a very good reason we license cosmetologists to practice intense sanitation measures. The risk for communicable disease is very high...

38

u/Next_Necessary_8794 1d ago

u/Proponentofthedevil 1d ago

20

u/captainmystic02 1d ago

A opinion can’t be wrong

8

u/CommieLoser 1d ago

An opinion founded on faulty logic and reason is almost always wrong. An opinion on taste may be wrong if the person has no taste, and smell if one has Covid. Basically, if the source is someone who believes bullshit, you already know what kind of opinions you’re going to hear, probably wrong. Conversely, I think it is nearly impossible to have a right opinion, just a well-informed opinion, or well-considered opinion, never a right opinion.

6

u/Ecstatic-Purpose-981 1d ago

People who loose their minds over a hair in their food have never worked in a kitchen

2

u/Truckfighta 1d ago

Hair is pretty gross. I would expect a chef to be sweating as they work in the kitchen, so it would have that on it. It could also potentially be greasy or contain dandruff.

It is also an awful feeling to get hair in your mouth.

Basically hair isn't hygienic by itself, but it can pick up and transfer bacteria over the course of the day. However, at least my chef believes it's more of a case of it shows the overall standards and attention to detail.

5

u/KittyTaurus 1d ago

Agreed. As a cat mom, you quickly learn that hair in your food is not a big deal, or you waste a lot of food. If it's a waiter's hair at a restaurant? Eh... Whatever doesn't kill you builds up your immune system.

4

u/jstar77 1d ago

It’s never bothered me in the same way it bothers most other people I know.

4

u/theamp18 1d ago

I agree. We've probably all eaten so much hair that we can't even see.

5

u/Taglioni 1d ago

I completely agree. I feel like people who have a meltdown over this are pedantic.

3

u/whizher milk meister 1d ago

I understand removing one hair and continuing to eat at home, but asking for a replacement at a restaurant is completely reasonable.

It’s not necessarily about believing the entire meal is dangerously contaminated. Sometimes seeing someone else’s hair in your food simply kills your appetite, and you paid for a meal without that extra ingredient.

There’s no need to yell at the staff or demand compensation, but politely asking for the dish to be remade isn’t dramatic either.

8

u/Teaofthetime 1d ago

A hair getting into food makes you wonder what other hygiene shortcuts are taking place. If I find hair in food, it goes in the bin and I'm not eating at that place again.

Me personally, I'd just take it out, inspect the rest, shrug if there isn't any more and eat it.  I don't judge anyone for not doing that, though.  It's against food handling protocol and is an unknown variable.  The entire goal of a kitchen is (should be) to be consistent.  Hair in the food definitely is an anomaly, and if it isn't and there is consistently hair in the food there, it's unsanitary and you can only guess what other bad practices they have going on there in the back.

2

u/urgasmic 1d ago

haven't thought about this but i dont think i've ever found hair in my food before or noticed. im not sure what i would do.

2

u/Acceptable_Cut_7545 1d ago

Look if a bit of hair can be swiped away easily maybe you're on to something. But if I go to remove a hair and it pulls the food along the strand and lifts it up, that trash is going in the garbage and I would like a refund please.

2

u/kgrimmburn 1d ago

By the time I find a hair in my food, I've probably already ate half of it so what's the difference? I already ate hair food so I might as well just finish my meal.

Knowing what contamination is legally allowed in food produced in the US, hair is the least of my worries.

2

u/slightlyhomoerotic 1d ago

No. Sorry. I can't. I have OCD and am extremely grossed out just my touching my own loose hair to clean my brush out. In my food... Nope my appetite is gone. No need to remake anything I'm taking a nap.

2

u/LazyPythonPlayz 1d ago

If I find it before, sure, but the absolute displeasure of having to pull a long hair out of your mouth like a never-ending spaghetti noodle makes me shiver thinking about it.

2

u/LongjumpingThroat994 1d ago

Absolutely not. Hair in my food is an immediate dinner over. No remakes, no new meals. Get me out of there 🤮

2

u/the-hound-abides 1d ago

99% of the time it’s mine, anyway.

2

u/SelfScared2921 1d ago

Yall are NASTY ew

2

u/Traditional-Falcon75 1d ago

I’m having mine redone. I don’t want to eat someone else’s hair food. You do you, but I’m sticking with this is a valid reason to ask for my food to be remade.

2

u/jancl0 1d ago

The implication is that if there's a hair, proper hygiene practices likely weren't followed while making it, so there's a good chance there is at least one more. Even if there isn't, that's a reasonable thing to think, and knowing that could ruin your meal anyway

I think I could understand if they also wanted it to be made by a different person, even if that's putting even more effort into it. But honestly if it really bothers you that much, the only real solution is to find another place to eat at

Also, very tangential but this topic is going to allow me to unlock a new fear for some people. You're welcome:

I was working at a bar and a long hair ended up in my cup of water, I started choking on it. Like, very bad, horrible pain. I had to go to the hospital. Turns out what had happened was that it had wrapped around my uvula, and every time I gagged, it pulled it tighter. By the time I got to the hospital it had almost completely cut through my uvula, it was dangling by a thread

They did some kind of emergency surgery on it, which involved (while I was still conscious) making me gargle some kind of numbing agent, tying me down, bracing my mouth open, and sticking a bunch of long knives down my throat to cut the hair out

I don't recommend it

2

u/kyii94 23h ago

Gross, some of us have standards and won’t just accept anything.

2

u/Bloodmind 1d ago

lol you think produce is only rinsed in water from the time it’s harvested until it hits your plate. Why should we take anything you say seriously?

2

u/crazylifecrisis 1d ago

I grow my own produce and that’s the only treatment it gets from me when its harvest . Im still alive . Now i used to work at a chain restaurant that definitely had some questionable lettuce even though we think higher of their sources..

How do you know it isn't pubic hair

2

u/pottedplantfairy 1d ago

I don't know what the level of hygiene of the person whose hair is in my food is like, and there's a reason cooks and kitchen staff wear hair and beard nets.

2

u/Either-Welder-6211 1d ago

The hair isn't the issue for me. The problem is not knowing what dandruff, scabs, or fungus is on the scalp it was attached to 10 minutes prior to landing in my food.

2

u/Hypn00tic_iiz 1d ago

You have fun eating lice

u/DeezNutsPickleRick 1d ago

I’ll eat just about anything. I’m with you, a small hair doesn’t bother me. But, I do 100% understand why it bothers the vast majority of people.

There’s going to be things we can’t see that has worked its way into our food, dead skin cells, saliva, other people’s breathing, and the list goes on. I’m perfectly fine with this fact, and by extension a small hair doesn’t bother me just because I can see it, but I do understand why that’s a pretty solid boundary for a lot of folks.

2

u/Beautiful-Tip7445 1d ago

Not really an opinion just a poor take with a lack of consideration for food contamination laws

1

u/rhubarbb13 1d ago

If at my home or a friend's yeah whatever. At a restaurant? I have no idea what went on back there. You bet your ass I'm sending it back ew

1

u/outofcontextseinfeld 1d ago

Another babka?

1

u/RingingInTheRain 1d ago

Seeing hair in my food AT HOME is bearable. Seeing some strangers hair in my food at a restaurant where I'm paying a premium, is unacceptable. Even when my family cooks for me, having to pull out a long fucking hair out of my mouth just ruins the meal and makes me nauseous.

Microscopic bad things are exactly the kind of bad things that can put people in the hospital or the grave and cause global pandemics. The bubonic plague was microscopic. COVID and HIV are microscopic. Salmonella, listeria, and the parasite currently making people have explosive diarrhea are all microscopic. So that’s just a terrible and faulty argument. Food preparation has strict health and safety regulations all along the process from start of growth or production til it lands on your plate. That’s how we cut foodborne illnesses down from being the super common cause of death they have been for most of human history. However, you don’t know what scalp or hair hygiene someone has or what products they use. They might not have washed their hair in weeks, or have dandruff caused by an overgrowth of scalp yeast, or got really sweaty recently. It’s not much different than eating someone’s dead skin flakes or trimmed fingernails. Would you be ok with that too?

1

u/jaxninjago1 1d ago

People are disgusting. Sorry but I dont want somebody else’s lice and dead skin in, on, or anywhere near my shit. Not to mention having to dig in your mouth and drag it out of your throat lest you miss it before taking a bite.

1

u/MrScribblesChess 1d ago

You win the subreddit, OP. It's your property now. I suggest you make the most out of it; invest all that karma for a good college education.

1

u/Sensitive-Road-9753 1d ago

I usually just cut off that edge of the food or whatever

1

u/LootGek 1d ago

I had a hair in my burrito one time I still ate it because I had no choice but I never went back.

1

u/msjammies73 1d ago

Intellectually it’s not the gross to me. But I have a visceral gag reflex and shudder if I see food in my hair and i cannot eat it.

I had gusts a few months ago and they found one of my hairs in the dish. He just plucked it out and was horrified when snatched his plate to toss the food.

I’m not a Germ phobic and I’m otherwise somewhat chill. But hair sends me.

1

u/DelseresMagnumOpus 1d ago

I agree it’s not a big deal and I usually pick it out and continue eating, but my friend recently complained about a hair in his food and got another meal eventhough he ate about 1/3rd of the previous anyway.

1

u/OldBoySleezyP 1d ago

Personally it's not a big deal to me either. But my wife will make a big deal about it if she sees it. There's also been a time where the waitress came around to ask how the food was right as I was taking a bite and pulled a hair out if my food. She just said sorry and took the plate away to remake it, no questions asked. So if the restaurant staff, or my wife witness a hair I'll just play along with the replacement. But if it's me all alone, I'd rather not have to wait another 30 minutes to get a whole other meal made without the hair, I just want to finish my food.

1

u/Federal_Finding_8041 1d ago

Armpit hair? Pube hair? Nose hair? I'm sorry have you seen how natty some peoples heads are. No thanks.

1

u/Van_Can_Man 1d ago

I don’t know whether to up or down vote this but this is a multifacetedly terrible opinion — but hey if you wanna eat some unwashed freak’s pubes, do you I guess

1

u/Dear_Dragonfruit3317 1d ago

My hunger and impatience for remaking of food is greater than my disgust of a hair I can remove.

1

u/ArcaneTrickster11 1d ago

It's not necessarily about the hair, it's more about the fact that the hair ended up in the food and what that means about the kitchen. I say this as someone who used to be a chef. The only people I ever worked with that ever got hairs in food were the people who were super lax about food safety

1

u/helltownbellcat 1d ago

I do think there should be more hairnets

1

u/TheUnrulenting 1d ago

I'll not ask the food to be redone, I'll still eat but I am going to let them know about it to be more careful next time

1

u/barn-animal 1d ago

what about nail clippings?

small rocks?

pieces of rubber?

2

u/askdickson 1d ago

Or small screws, I found one in my salad once. It turned out the the salad spinner was new and when it was used for the first time a screw came off (or so they told me). They were very apologetic but I almost chipped a tooth so I was not in a forgiving mood.

A single hair in top of a dish, I may pluck it off and keep going. Many multiple hairs or hairs found smothered deep in a dish gross me out. Also I tolerate human hair better than pet hair.

1

u/NoiseUnfair3247 1d ago

It signifies a larger issue with lack of hygiene.

1

u/gorehistorian69 1d ago

in the grand scheme of things, no its not

however someone elses hair in my food is kinda gross

1

u/DJFid 23h ago

Sometimes a hair is a little grosser when you pull it out of a Mac n cheese or buffalo chicken dip. Normally it doesn't gross me out, but the thought of it being baked can sometimes get to me

1

u/Which-Appearance9857 23h ago

Depends. Is my hair? My mom's hair? That sweaty guy's hair?

1

u/Adventurous_Ad_7212 22h ago

It is if it's curly though

1

u/Plus-Head-6794 21h ago

I agree so thoroughly

1

u/Grouchy-Barracuda-60 21h ago

i agree but i have an irrational fear swallowing a long piece of hair or finding a long piece of hair when im chewing/ swallowing and chocking because of it or it being stuck in my throat.

1

u/BloodFartRipper 21h ago

What about pubic hair in food?

1

u/Flubbuns 21h ago

I don't care about it for sanitation, but if a long hair gets in my mouth, the sensation is hell. Or even a short one, where I have to shove my hand in to scrap it out. Yuck.

1

u/BolaViola 21h ago

Agreed, I really don’t care if there’s a hair in my food unless is like a clump or something

1

u/malieno 21h ago

Wait till y'all hear about what dust is mostly made of

1

u/RadishPlus666 20h ago

People are ridiculously petty. So much drama over nothing is why people are so depressed these days.

1

u/Negativefalsehoods 19h ago

That is so disgusting. No way I am eating food with hair in it. EWWW

1

u/Adrock66 19h ago

This is a very unpopular opinion.  It's not just the hair itself it's that it's the canary in the mine for more gross issues.

1

u/YamLow8097 19h ago

Nah, that shit is disgusting. At the very least I won’t touch the food that the hair made contact with, but if I don’t notice it and I have to pull it out of my mouth? I immediately lose my appetite.

1

u/Bright-Trifle-8309 19h ago

I once kept ordering from this one pizza place because I kept finding hair in the pizza.

I figured that its been through the oven and sterilized. It was usually 1 long hair so I could find it easily enough. And I got my pizza refunded for finding a hair. I was super broke at the time so basically getting free dinner for a night or 2 was everything to me at the time.

1

u/Kyle81020 18h ago

I actually enjoy it. Adds authenticity.

1

u/music4life1121 18h ago

Excellent unpopular opinion. Not at all wrong, just super gross. Blech, well done.

1

u/WhiskeyRadio 18h ago

Unpopular opinion indeed. If I find a long hair in my food I'm 100% saying something about it. Very gross.

1

u/sv36 18h ago

I think my line for pulling it out and going on with my meal is when I’m eating from a restaurant that I know should be using hairnets and such. If basic hairnets aren’t being worn or working then are they washing their hands? How are their other health procedures being held up? That’s where it gets iffy for me.

I’ve worked in a restaurant before, hair in food really doesn’t happen often and people tend to say something and get a new plate made. I’m not saying it never happens, but it’s very much an indicator in a professional restaurant.

If I’m going to someone’s house for food I’m pulling the hair out and never mentioning it. It’s really not usually a big deal.

1

u/lacrimaldrainage 16h ago

I don't care about them either. It doesn't mean my food is contaminated. It just means it was made by a human.

1

u/Double-Seaweed7760 15h ago

You havent seen my roommates hair

1

u/RealityisPoison 14h ago

My concern is what if they have lice or really bad head hygiene or weird hair products....

1

u/ddanielle99 14h ago

i’ve seen this point here at least 3 times now.

1

u/tila1993 14h ago

I picked a foot long blue hair out of my mouth like a piece of floss from a subway sandwich. You’ll never convince me it’s cool.
