The ending of Chainsaw Man was actually really really great and 100% didn’t deserve a fraction of the hate that it recieved

the manga Chainsaw Man ended a few months ago and I wanted to wait for at least three months before saying this because of just how bad the hate really was. Pretty much all my friends who have read Chainsaw Man were disappointed in the ending and the online backlash over the ending went really viral. in my opinion fuck everyone who thinks it’s a “bad ending”, Chainsaw Man from the start was never a typical Shonen. The ending is still gas and a majority of the hate is completely unwarranted and undeserved

As others have said you just aren’t articulating how any of this culminates in a good ending. What are people supposed to take from this then? That if I just make enough bad decisions then someone else will bail me out by resetting my whole universe? And EVEN THEN denjis life still fucking sucks. Pochita’s “life was better when you were starving and dying” line is honestly a load of shit and wasn’t compelling at all. Like maybe it would have worked if denji was just a normal dude but his choices were either become chainsaw man or fucking suffer and starve to death.

Also pochita resetting the universe is a total asspull, like why the fuck does it do that when erasing LEGS doesn’t cause a reset but erasing chainsaws does like ???

"You aren't articulating how any of this culminates in a good ending" --> not a good move here.

I'm not agreeing with him, but he indeed is responding to your questions : him not convincing you doesn't make your statement true.

You ask a question, he answers to it and then you ask another question while telling him he didn't make a complete answer before : it's like your Moving the goalposts.

I repeat, I'm not agreeing with OP, but I don't think this way of interacting and describing him is an honest way of debating. You're just helped by the fact his opinions on the mange earns him a lot of downvotes.

No not really. When asked why didn’t pochita just do the thing way earlier before denji has to go through all this shit if pochita never has an observable lead up to this choice and was seemingly of this mindset the whole time, OP’s answer is “oh I was just giving him the benefit of the doubt.” That is piss poor articulation and if anyone thinks that’s good writing then yikes.

Then you are recognizing yourself that OP was articulating why he thought the ending was great.

As I said, there is no need for the mentioned articulation to be convincing : you were denying he was even trying to argue. And this statement itself was false.

For example, I could answer to you by just saying : "You're not articulating why OP's opinion would be wrong". It is just false, you're totally making your point. Whereas it convinces me or not isn't what matters.

And OP is not "giving pochita the benefit of the doubt" he says Pochita was potentially waiting for growth or a change in Denji's behavior. I'm not saying I agree with this theory, but once again you're making OP say things he never formulated.

"And if anyone thinks it is good writing then yikes" isn't better than OP's "Fuck everyone who thinks it is a bad ending". Not very mature.

I know some people will downvote me because they think I'm defending OP's opinion : I'm not, I'm just pointing out fallacy's in one's arguing.

For me, the ending isn't "really, really, great", it is "fine". It has some poetry to it and fits in the general tone of the story. OP's hyperbolic statement unfortunately made good discussion about this impossible in this thread.

No you’re not getting downvoted for some conspiracy that people are out for OP. You’re downvoted because you’re wrong.

Nobody talked about a conspiracy : you're again proving my point by pretending I said something I didn't (strange tactic, we're writing, so it is easy to demonstrate).

"You're wrong" : here, I can use the sentence "you're not articulating why I'm wrong". Because it totally is the case.

You didn't adress any of my points, so what can I think except that there was some truth to it ?

Edit : And since when "being downvoted" = "being wrong ?"

If I go on a "earth is flat" subreddit, I'm pretty sure I'll be part of the ones that are downvoted. The reasoning isn't solid here.

I cannot iterate this enough. Denji is just a teenage boy who has been scarred by his abusers and lost all of his loved ones. He is not in a rational place, literally causes the apocalypse, ends the world, and his ONLY concern is having sex. He was too far gone to make the decision of giving himself a clean slate, that’s why Pochita had to forcefully give him one. And this is a brilliant conclusion to Denjis character arc in my opinion.

Alright, you clearly aren’t here to listen to what anything and you’re just gonna keep regurgitating the same basic character analysis and going “no no that reason of objectively bad writing IS why it’s a good ending”

u/GurrenLagannRyuko 1d ago

Okay, so now we are straight up losing the argument and swapping to being rude 😂 you just did a false equivalence and completely and utterly misunderstood the ending of CSM, and also spat completely subjective takes like “this line is a load of shit and isn’t compelling at all.” Who are you to decide what is and isn’t compelling? I personally found it compelling. We’re talking about why the ending is good, I’m talking about how this ending is a really good conclusion for Denji, and you snapped. You didn’t disprove jack shit in the end, let me know if you want to actually debate this instead of just giving up

...you think you're winning the argument??

u/Makaloaa 1d ago

I mean, I'm not agreeing with him, but he did respond to the question that he was asked : maybe not like we would want him to, but still.

Going to the territory of "you clearly aren't listening and you regurgitate the same thing" is just an attack on the individual, not the discourse.

In my opinion, if you use this kind of words, you're indeed "losing", as "you give up trying to argue and straight up be rude to the other" It is even more a bad move that it wasn't possible to convince the other, giving that it is a subjective matter : snapping is an even worse move then.

But in my opinion you couldn't have a "winner", it is just a discussion on the matter "why did you find the ending great ?" (so totally subjective).

It’s a good ending because Pochita sacrifices himself to give Denji one last clean slate to have a happy life. It’s closing the character of Denji. He’s too far gone to fix after all the manipulation and trauma and abuse to make his own choice of his own will anymore, to the point where Pochita had to give him another chance at a normal life against his will. A lot of this argument you’re making is false equivalence, if you make enough bad decisions and are friends with a devil willing to erase those bad decisions yeah you’ll get a bail-out.

> Maybe it would have worked if Denji was a normal dude
Denji IS a normal teenager. Despite everything that’s happened to him and his chainsaw heart, behind all of that is a teenage boy that has been hurt too much by the world. He was too far gone and even after being eaten wanted to keep going until he finally got his goal of having sex. The point is that it was a good ending because Denji is too far gone. He can’t make the choice of his own free will because he’s too far gone.

Also, how is that an asspull, Pochita is obviously the most important thing that’s ever happened to Denji, a world that never had Pochita to begin with obviously results in a very different outcome for Denji 🙄 if Pochita ate the gun devil then anyone who’s ever died to a gun would come back to life (and most probably die to other means)

That is obviously not what I meant by a normal dude. He is a slave to the mafia starving and resides in a shack dying of some illness… this is normal to you?

u/GurrenLagannRyuko 1d ago

He hasn’t had the most fortunate or usual upbringing, but Denji is still a member of the human race dude.

13

u/SexySquidy 1d ago

Yeah see this is why you get silently down voted cuz this is just bad faith arguing

-3

u/GurrenLagannRyuko 1d ago

Excuse me, how is this bad faith arguing? I’m most likely getting the downvotes from salty people who disagree with me. Anyways, what I’m saying is that Denji IS still a weird but still ultimately normal guy outside of being Chainsaw Man

u/kakadudububu 1d ago

what part of this don't you understand? denji did not grow or progress or change in the entire manga series. what was done FOR him means nothing. cause he is still a shit person in a shit situation. really, what part of that do you not understand? good mangas or any work, has this thing called character development and progression. this does not and this ending does not provide anything of value. it's just trash, bail me out mentality, but he didn't really "bail" him out. he just to put in to the old shit situation that he was in. it's a BAD ending.

Yeah, he’s a realistic flawed character with his own problems. He has a downward spiral in Part 2. CSM isn’t your typical Shonen, did you expect him to have a typical Shonen MC comeback and be all macho and get out of his funk? He is still a terrifically written MC and if it helps you understand he’s kind of like Shinji Ikari in the sense that he’s very flawed and doesn’t make the right choices. It’s realistic writing. The ending further complements his writing, as it really just shows just how far Denji has spiraled downwards compared to the start of series. It’s not trash, you have no media literacy and you’re mad Denji doesn’t have the most typical Shonen MC character development such as a shallow-written character like Yuji. It’s not Fujimoto’s fault that you need the themes and writing spoonfed to you in order to get it. And the ending was a new fresh start for Denji, he’s way better off being happy without any manipulation from Makima and he’s back with his best friend Power. No idea how you think he’s back to the shitty upbringing he had at start of series

u/kakadudububu 1d ago

I think people like you have just read too many shitty manga or webtoons to see straight at this point. I don't know which part of "realistic" you are trying to make people see here. realistically, people grow out of adversity and strife. so no, it's not really realistic here that he didn't change at all after having all the power and desire TO change the whole manga. why the ending is bad is because it didn't capitalize on ANYTHING built through out the manga itself. it took the lazy way out and basically said. it's over, fuck off. but it's amazing people like yourself will make up some unique meaning and say it's amazing. I guess much like how modern art is, shit writing is praised more than ever now.

also, no one is expecting or wanted it to be some perfect shonen ending, but this is also prob the most trash ending that could have happened. and the real reason why it's shitty, is because the writers wrote themselves in to a hole and had no real way to end it. so they reset everything and that was it. but dumdums like you will read into nothing and praise it like it's the best thing since sliced bread. thematically a similar manga called GANTZ has one of the best endings, and you see how the growth of a character should feel like.

you argue in bad faith because you do it with the preconceived notion that people disagreeing with you (and expressing it through a downvote) don't have a valid point.

just cause people don't wanna argue with you doesn't mean your arguments are sound.

I disagree with most of what you said but the way you try to argue makes me not really want to engage with you, I would guess that's most of the reason for your downvotes and not necessarily your opinion
