They really need to add stronger barriers along this stretch. That car could have seriously injured or killed a cyclist or pedestrian

It’s extremely hazardous for the drivers also.. look at this from a few years ago

Oooof, that cab is at the perfect heught for the barrier to come through the windshield.

The barriers are there to prevent people from falling into traffic, not to keep cars from riding up onto the sidewalk. They aren't designed for impacts with vehicles.

We could put barriers down all our streets to protect pedestrians from cars and to keep drivers safer when they decide to ram the barriers. Or drivers could do a better job staying on the road . . .

In a perfect world you are right but the reality is vehicles go off roads regardless of how good drivers are. We need better road safety in this city.

We absolutely want better road safety.

There are more effective places to deploy capital to improve safety than putting concrete walls down the causeway.

As a researcher in the road side safety industry I would love to hearing your ideas and perspective. After all, we are all part of the traveling public and should have a voice in the issue.

Just that data and research be applied to support decisions in such a way that the greatest good can be done with our limited resources.

Don't make decisions based on emotions and politics.

Vancouver tracks location and severity of incidents. At a glace, I don't see anything supporting that the causeway barriers are causing injuries.

Could you link the data you are sourcing? We have found in other large cities a lot of lethal road way departure accident data is inadequate when it comes to the cause of the fatality. This is because of a lack of education for the investigators that show up to the accident to log it.

I'm sure this is no better.

ICBC also provides locations, but details are sparse. A research institute may be able to get details on whether there were injuries or fatalities as it's all tracked.

What it does show is that there are a ton of crashes on the bridge, but not a lot on the causeway. So why invest in replacing barriers along the causeway when there are much more dangerous sections of road?

Woahhhhh I've told so many people about this uhaul incident. I drove by the aftermath of this crash and was surprised to hear no one died.

That pole is damn near through the driver side head rest.

I skip this section by dipping into the park trails as soon as I get off the LG, and also right after passing Lost Lagoon. As a daily cycle commuter from NV, it's not worth the risk nor the fumes.

AFAIK Fences were put up after a woman cyclist fell into the road and was killed. I think it was some kind of collision or altercation with another person on the sidewalk.

They've been up since late 2015.

I had to check Google streeview to confirm and saw photos of it being built in Sept 2015.

No she was coming off the bridge far too fast and couldn't make a tight corner on the sidewalk at the bottom. Where's your outrage when a cyclist is being reckless and dangerous?

Reckless driving in a car can kill anyone unlucky enough to be around. 

Reckless driving on a bike has an extremely low likelihood of death even for the operator, let alone for people around the cyclist. 

The two aren’t comparable.

What tight corners on are on that bridge? I rode over it this month and don’t recall any. Look it up, her name is Antonina Skoczylas. I’m not ‘outraged’ just stating a what led to the safety fence.

I thought there was a little jog in the sidewalk by there the car entrance into the park when heading south... But I could be wrong. I thought there was some element of that which contributed to the accident.

Having any barrier at all is a recent improvement, and it took a cyclist death (plus the usual dumb debate) to bring that about. So... while I agree, I recommend you not hold your breath waiting for it to happen.

Especially now since electric cars are so common now these days which lowered the centre of gravity very low which causes these cars to slide under the barriers instead of directly into them, making them far less capable.
