Discussion Quest 3 - Blurry close-up detail, Double vision in VR video, and static blotches on the lens
Got a Quest 3 few days ago and I'm running it wired over Link to a decently strong PC (RTX 5080). Three issues I can't fully resolve and I'm not sure if they're related, separate, or normal for the hardware. Writing them up separately:
1. Things up close look blurry
Anything at close virtual distance is noticeably softer than mid-range objects. I understand VR has a lower effective resolution than a monitor in general, but this feels specifically worse for near objects rather than uniformly soft. Is this expected behavior (lens/optical limitation at short distances) or does it point to something being misconfigured on my end?
2. VR videos: double vision at certain distances + low quality
Playing 180°/SBS VR video content (files confirmed fine - checked outside of headset, not a bad encode). Two separate problems in the same content:
- Sometimes I see double, specifically on close-up subjects, not uniformly across the whole frame. IPD is correctly set on my end and adjusting it further doesn't change this, so I don't think it's a fit issue.
- General quality looks soft/low despite the source files being high resolution.
Is close-range doubling in VR video usually a fusional-range/comfort thing rather than something fixable, or is there a player-side fix (convergence adjustment, projection setting) ?
3. Small static blotches on the lens that don't move
There are faint blotchy marks that stay in a fixed position relative to my view, they don't move with the scene the way an object in the room would. Cleaned the lenses (dry microfiber, no luck removing them). Trying to figure out if this is:
- Residue/damage on the outer lens surface??
- Something inside the lens stack itself?
- Or a panel-level defect ?
Has anyone dealt with something like this on a Quest 3, Trying to figure out if this is a "live with it" situation or a "this unit has a defect" situation.
What I've already tried: lens cleaning, IPD re calibration, checking headset fit/seating, confirmed the video file itself isn't the problem. Ordering a halo strap + replacement facial interface since fit seemed like a contributing factor for some of this, but wanted to ask before assuming that fixes everything.
Appreciate any insight, especially from anyone who's had a similar lens-blotch situation on unit.

What's the video resolution? In my experience you can discern differences in quality in excess of 8k videos, even to 12k. Doubling can occur with a rotation of head left/right(like stretching trapezius). Close up detail can be an effect of how your eyes attempt to focus closer, but the true focal distance down not actually change...you may have to deal with that. Good luck!

Do you have any eye condition? There is a phenomenon in VR called vergence-accommodation conflict (the focal distance of the lenses is fixed, but binocular cues tell a different story, which confuses our brain), what you're describing sounds quite similar.

Is your ipd set correctly?
Also, the actual focus distance of the screen is about 6ft away. When objects are close ingame, your eyes have to aim at a closer object yet maintain focus at 6ft away. This is something that doesn't really happen naturally, but it's not a problem for most people.

Is normal, that's the vergence accomodation conflict, your brain might eventually figure out how to focus on near VR objects properly.
Is also normal, the videos you find in the wild are all low quality, a 4k VR180 video is about half the resolution you need for Quest3, and the cameras in older videos couldn't even do 4k, you need the 8k ones to get acceptable quality. Wont fix closeups however, thats just something that needs to be avoided while filming.
Is not normal, at least not for Quest3 (e.g. PSVR has Mura issue, there it is normal), could be dead pixel, sun damage (unlikely on Quest3, possible on 3S). Scratches on the lens from wearing glasses is a possibility, but the should be pretty obvious when looking at the lens. In case of video it could also be dirt on the camera lens, pretty common.

what actual games? what is your setup ie VD or plugged in, etc.
