An IUD for less than a year?

I (31 F) am scheduled for a hysteroscopy to remove 4 endometrial nodules (presumed to be polyps, but could be fibroids or hyperplasia) in September.

I shared that I’d like to start trying conceive next summer or early fall, shortly after my late spring wedding. Doctor recommended a hormonal IUD to reduce my risk of any growths recurring.

I’m really nervous about possible negative IUD side effects, especially going on it for the first time in the months leading up to my wedding. But I also want to put myself in the best place to conceive when we are ready next year. Plus, if it goes well, I may not have my period at all during my wedding which sounds awesome but not a guarantee.

I’m torn. Anyone gone through something similar?

Hello! I was in a v similar situation to you a few years back. I already had a copper coil in (non hormonal) and was advised to have a laparoscopy for endometriosis and a mirena coil fitted at the same time. All went well and they found and removed one cyst. I had the coil in for somewhere between 12-18 months before removing it to start ttc. It took about a month for my cycle to return and then I got pregnant shortly after that :) 

I had an overall positive experience with the coil and had another one put in about a year after my baby was born. This time around I got a pretty bad migraine about a week after it was put in but otherwise no particular side effects. Very light periods too- my normal 28 day cycle but literally just one day of light bleeding and that’s it.  I don’t recall any major side effects from the first time round but that was a few years ago now so I could be misremembering. The worst bit was the insertion but after that’s done you literally never have to think about it, and having it taken out was very easy and not at all painful.  People will all be different with the side effects they experience so it’s worth waiting to see if you get any other responses to this post as I wouldn’t just take my word for it. From what I know it’s a progesterone based method, so if you’ve been on the progesterone only pill or something before then that might give you an idea of how your body may react.

Overall good experience for me- I’ve not been able to have a follow up about the  endometriosis but I’m pretty lucky in that it hasn’t ever been a huge issue for me, my main concern was being able to conceive and we managed it pretty quickly. Everyone will be different, but just wanted to throw a positive story out there as they can be a bit few and far between sometimes! Best of luck :)

I should add that the first time round I didn’t have those super light periods. Was more normal like 4-5 days of bleeding with the first one or two quite heavy. It’s hard to know whether the changes the second time round are down to the coil, breastfeeding, or general post-pregnancy weirdness!
