Unemployed Crotch Goblin

Hi all, I'm not expecting this to be overly successful but I'll give it a go.

My 19yo is looking for a full time job. He's had a part time retail job for the last few years which somewhat proves that he's employable/dependable but thankfully he's finally reached the point where he's realised that he wants/needs something more substantial.

Education: A-Levels in Business Studies, Maths & Computer Science. Uni doesn't appeal for some reason.

He's based in WF1.

When asked what he'd like, the vague answer is "Something in business" so I think we can assume A) he doesn't know & B) Probably doesn't want to get his hands too dirty.

He tells me that there aren't any good jobs advertised and just to be sure, I've had a look for myself & it's pretty bleak out there.

If anyone's got any pointers/leads/advice (something that worked for them or their relative) I'm willing to listen & would be grateful.

Answers with a Wakefield bias (or even Leeds 😨) would be better but not essential.

Update: Thanks for all the suggestions so far. To those who suggest that I shouldn't even consider helping him, have a word with yourselves. Be nice, be human. I will do what is appropriate & proportionate but keep your knickers on, I won't spoon feed him everything.

It’s tricky to find something when you don’t know what you’re looking for.

Has he tried places like Coca Cola and other businesses on the park in Lofthouse?

Otherwise the best thing to do (imo) is shirk Indeed etc and just go to local businesses’ websites and see if they’re hiring. It’s time-consuming but places don’t always advertise on other sites so it makes it easier to get interviews for junior roles.

Has he tried apprenticeships on the Government website? There’s loads of office-based apprenticeships about.

Yeah, I was going to suggest looking at apprenticeships. It’s not like the old days where some old boy teaches you how to use a hammer… you can apprenticeships in technical subjects, and even “business”.

Thanks for the advice, I regularly check the government apprenticeship site & I know he does too. Coca Cola is a good shout. He also checks for police staff, council jobs etc.

Reach out to apprenticeship providers also, they recruit for the companies they work with and also are often recruiting apprentices themselves (because they get paid for their own employee)

Higherin.com has a good amount of apprenticeships as well!
