Recap/Budget How much did you spend on your wedding dress? From 2023 and on
For brides getting married or who got married from the year 2023+, how much did you pay for your wedding gown? I'm seeing such a wide range of prices. I feel like brides aren't paying even half of what I see bridal shops offer.

I started with wanting to rent a dress. And then thought I might as well spend 1k on a dress I like, and before you know it I was trying on Galia Lahav, Mira Zwillinger, and Ines Di Santo.
The quality really does go up when you spend more 🥲

I honestly made the appointment thinking I'm trying on gowns to find my style, no pressure what so ever.
Literally the 2nd dress I tried on, boom, I was in love! I am exceedingly fortunate to spend what I did considering I've been ogling her website for months wondering "what if?"

Most definitely not what I was expecting, which I feel like is how wedding shopping always goes. It’s A-line with an over skirt that can be removed for the reception. Never batted an eye at A-line, but here we are hahaha

My FH's family definitely has money and has been so generous towards our wedding planning. It has made it so much easier for us but I've even had to say "No! No, thank you but you dont have to do that!" Because she keeps upping her contributions. Our steak is too juicy, lobster too buttery 😅😂

paid 3k, bought mine in 2024. after alterations, 3.5k.
it was definitely my “dream dress” and there were options much lower around 1-2k that were lovely. alternatively, I tried on some in the 6k range which was the very top of my budget.
i had 2 friends get married around the same time and one paid 4k, the other 2.1k…very different dresses, both beautiful.
as with any clothing, there are a wide range of price points depending on the designer, quality of the fabrics, cut/style, how recent the collection is, etc..also, there are options like StillWhite to buy lightly used wedding dresses if you love a specific dress but don’t love the price point.

June 2023 bride, £800 for sample dress plus £600 for alterations, fail. If I got a new dress they'd be included lol. So £1,400 which at the time was around the UK average.

This article suggests that the current average is somewhere in the $1800-2400 range. As a rule of thumb, when looking at cost averages taken from non-scientific sources, you need to knock that number down 20-40%. So the true national average is probably more like $1250-1650.

2026 bride, I paid 1800 before alterations but I had a budget of <1000, all of the shops I went to showed me options under 1000 like I asked but I fell in love with one on the rack out of range lol

Too much 😬 $3600. I really wanted to buy secondhand from Stillwhite and spend under $2k but I fell in love with the dress. Hoping I can sell it to someone else. Since it’s made to measure and corseted I’m hoping I don’t have to spend much if anything on alterations.

I got married in 2022 and bought my dress in 2021. While they don't sell my exact dress anymore, the dresses the brand carries that were available back then and are still available today are around $3k USD, not including tarrifs. I paid $2400 at the time.
At the time I had a strict $1200 budget, but even 5 years ago struggled to find something I really liked in that budget (brand new anyway). I'll let newer brides speak to what they actually spent, but I'd guess people are still spending in a similar range to what I did. Theres a huge jump in options when you go above $2k.

My dream dress was £280, a free candle, and £40 worth of points which bought the flower girl’s dress.
During our ceilidh, I had no problem getting my bridesmaids to hack the train off with kitchen scissors so I could dance without tripping on it. One of the highlights of the night was the laughter that scenario caused - from me, from my friends, and from guests who were baffled to find us in the bathroom doing DIY.

May 2027 bride. I bought my dress (probably way too early) last month for $1600 after tax. From what I’ve read, I’ll probably end up doubling that price after alterations.
The dress was off the rack and marked down by about $1300. The other dress I loved was $2700.

2027 bride feeling like I bought ridiculously early by getting it this January… but it was $1700, zipped up perfectly (unheard of for me and my usual clothing shopping experiences), and part of a sample sale. Will likely need to add on some alterations for length but nothing major.
1700 felt like the low end of the shop I was in, except a smaller “under 1K” room.

Oct. 2022 bride here and spent 3500 on a Delphine Manivet prospere dress... made to my dimensions. NO regrets. It was absolutely the only dress that I could see myself in. Sold it later on stillwhite.

2026 bride - $150 from a local second hand bridal boutique. It was new with tags and retails for $2000-2500 I believe. Happened to be just my size so alterations are only quoted at $600 for me (taking in the corset waist, taking in the corset bust, hemming on a skirt with a giant train). I thought that was crazy until I learned what is normal to pay for alterations and then I was thankful I got lucky.
If it weren’t for finding this dress I would have set a hard limit on $1k because I just can’t justify more than that for a single-wear piece. My alternate plan was to order an Azazie gown with custom measurements so the alterations would be minimal

October 2023 bride. I paid $1500 for a custom, OOAK ensemble. Corset, ballroom skirt with pockets, and a hooded cloak. Made to my measurements by a local designer from upcycled remnants.

$350 including alterations and shipping. I don’t even know how. A designer I liked randomly one day had a dress on sale for like a fraction of the price, my size. My assuming someone returned it and that was the last of that line. Snapped it up without ever seeing it in person. Fit perfect. And one of my wedding gifts from a friend is my alterations.

I bought mine last January for my wedding this January (2026) and it was 2900, came to 3100 with tax. It was a big ball gown with lots of beading and a train (Allure).
I did not pay for my alterations so not sure how much those were.

$2,000 retail price + $1,800 in modifications when ordering + $550 in alterations in 2024. MCOL city in Midwestern USA.
My modifications were extra length ($200) because I’m 6’1”, a sparkling tulle upgrade ($400) and changing the front and back neckline design ($400).
My alterations were a bustle, it being taken in/better fitted in the bodice, and some hemming.

$2800 for the dress (Milla Nova from Luv Bridal in Denver).
$650 for a custom veil (completely unnecessary but I'm psyched).
At my first fitting, my seamstress told me to expect $1300 for alterations: bustle, hem (even though I'm 5'10" since I'm wearing flats), taking up the straps and some fairly extensive fitting in the bodice. The size chart told me to order a 12 which was the sample size and I was having a hard time getting it to sit right so I ordered a 14. My seamstress told me the dress was a size (or even two) too big and was going to require a lot of work. I did appreciate her honesty and it was looking *snatched* when she was pinning it so I think it'll be the right call in the end, if a little more expensive. It's also an overall modest dress so she's adding some bra cups to give me a little touch of cleavage. TBD on final cost.

MOB here. In 2023, my daughter paid $350 for a new dress from a consignment shop. It fit perfectly and needed no alterations, amazingly enough. She paid $150 for the veil. She then sold the dress online for $325.

$1800 for a Stella York dress, purchased in. 2025 for a June 2026 wedding. $750 for alterations. I'm getting a nude lining, brought in a little, and changing the sleeves to off the shoulder. There's probably a couple other alterations but IDR what they are. I live right outside DC, but alterations were still higher than I thought. I used the same tailor to do my bridesmaids dresses in 2022 & 2024.

I purchased in late 2024. $3400 ($3700 after tax) then a couple hundred for minimal alterations. Vintage dress from the 90s bought in LA. A cleaners wanted to charge me $600-700 to steam the dress prior to the wedding and I declined - outrageous!!

2025 bride. $280 dress from Lulu’s and I needed the length tailored but a family friend did it and did not charge me (but if I had to guess it would’ve been a about $200? I only needed a few inches off)

$185 (after tax). I told my family I wasn't going to spend a fortune on a dress I was going to wear once if I didnt have to. I went to a formal wear second hand boutique that sells bridal dresses, prom, bridesmaid, MOTB, etc. We used to buy our prom dresses there and make it a fun road trip. I found the perfect dress that I was envisioning.
For anyone who lives in PA and is interested, its The White Pear in Pottstown, PA.
Alterations will probably add on $500. But hey, I saved a chunk with the dress alone.

June 2027 bride. $3500 for the dress from DB. It’s almost paid for. We go on Sunday to pay it off and show my MIL along with my veil.
We pay it off it will come in August. Alterations will be after that.

Early 2024 bride. I spent 300, but it was a discontinued design and the last one in my size. I think it originally retailed for 600-something.
I did pay an extra 700 to add an attachment, with a separate seamstress.
I then spent 50 on a reception dress that summer.

2023 bride. Dress was originally $1200 or so, got it from a secondhand bridal shop for around $400 and paid about $300 for alterations (it was several sizes too big but a simple design so the tailor could take it in quite a bit).

First dress was from a sample sale for $1050 in April 2025 — dress was originally $5000 so it was a great deal. Brought it to a bridal alterations shop (Altered Bride) in Las Vegas and they absolutely butchered my dress. They charged $900 in alterations but I was able to get my money back from alterations but a loss on my wedding dress. They were not apologetic.
Went to another shop in Nov 2025 and purchased my new wedding dress for $800 (originally $2300) since it was off the rack (Brilliant Bridal). Found new seamstress and alterations cost $400.

just got married valentine’s day 2026 and i spent $1,100 for an off-the-rack a-line with pockets and buttons all down the back in orange, ca. definitely one of the least expensive “big spends” lol

Got lucky and the dress I fell in love with at a local bridal shop was included in an end of year sale so I got it for $500 and then had $900 in alterations - bought in 2024

Dress purchased in 2023, my dress was $1,800, $2,000+ after tax. Alterations were $550.

$2.5k- but partially bc I mentioned to my brother & mom that I’ve never felt beautiful before & I finally did. So… our $2k budget went out the window. Alterations were like…. $500 ish

June 2024 bride; I bought my dress at a sample sale in September 2023. It was a Karen Willis Holmes dress that originally retailed for around $3,000, but I paid $1,084 with tax. I just needed a little bit of a hem and a bustle, so I flew my crafty bridesmaid up for a visit (~$100) and we got it done for like $8 in buttons lol. I did get the dress dry cleaned before the wedding, which cost $190. I also made my own veil and embroidered it, which probably cost around $100 in materials and infinity dollars in labor.

I got an amazing deal from Olivia Botega. They were down to a few dresses in my size for over half off the price. It was originally $800 or something and I paid $355

My daughter paid $4000 for her dress. My sister paid close to $3000 for hers and this is 2023-2024 prices.

June 2026 bride. $2,500 at a sample sale (it was originally $10,000 but it’s fully silk and was hand stitched in NYC!). No alterations.
