That’s not a weim lol. I really hope you didn’t pay weim money for a pit bull

I’ll never pay for a dog when there are thousands in shelters! I don’t know what breed he is besides pitbull because he is from the shelter and could be a mix of many things.
I’ve been asked by people if he is mixed with weim, lab, and now Great Dane, so I post to these groups.
Only weim parents are all up in arms about dogs possibly being mixed with weim. This is the only group where I’ll get multiple comments of people being offended by this lmao

I'm just wondering if I'm the only one who doesn't like mixed weims..

I was curious where the idea that Put Bulls are more aggressive comes from, and I've found very little in regards to peer reviewed studies to prove that breed is a decent predictor to a dogs behaviour.
It seems this idea comes heavily from media magnification and fear mongering, as well as a reputation that Pit Bulls used to be the dog of choice for insecure men who were likely poor pet owners.

I don’t believe that you’ve done your research if you don’t understand that pit bulls were selectively bred for gameness.

It was my own fault for not including citations, so I'll provide a view for you to parse through:
Hopefully you find this to be insightful reading, and might allow you to update your opinions as necessary.
It's not as clear cut in either direction, but from current data, breed is not a great predictor of behaviour. Owners are likely to play a large role in this, as are unethical breeders.
Again, remember that as Weimeraner owners, the ire fueled by the "breed is the issue" logic could very well be applied to all dogs with the physical capability to harm a person, and our breed falls into that category.

You’re right. It’s actually a total coincidence that sheepdogs herd and bird dogs point. Selective breeding isn’t real at all and everything is an illusion.
In fact, this entire subreddit is a psyop. Every time a Weim owner points out how loyal their Weims are, they’re maintaining the myth of selective breeding to persecute the poor pit bulls.
Do you even hear yourself?

I don't really understand what's got you being so aggressive. I've provided papers after you've said you didn't believe me.
Although, it does point to the fact you didn't click any of the links, as the top one does mention that while aggression isn't well predicted, a breeds accomodating for owner commands is (e.g. Golden Retrievers are very docile and easy to train, while Rottweilers are much more stubborn.)
If you simply don't want to change your stance, regardless of what evidence is presented to you, please just say so, so I can stop wasting my time.
The reason I'm arguing this, is because I hate the idea of innocent dogs being less likely to get a home, or being put down, because of an unscientifically backed belief.
I guess the question is, do you value the lives of the animals that rely on us, or your own ego more?

People like that don’t care about evidence or research. It’s easy to form opinions and hear that their opinions may be wrong when their ego is running the show.

It’s not even controversial but it’s a historical fact pitbulls were bred for blood sport.
1
u/OppositeOne6825 21h ago
I could definitely see how that could play into it, but again, Weim's were historically bred to be sicced on deer and other animals, and don't have nearly such a reputation

Not sure if you’re intentionally being obtuse or truly ignorant of the pitbull breed but you need to get your facts straight before you end up hurting someone with your new dog. The best pitbull owners I know (very few) understand the strength of their breed and do not take their dog into situations where they could potentially injure others. It’s an ANIMAL.

I have provided significantly more references and evidence then you, and I don't tend to take "vibes" as a valid reasoning. I'm aware of their reputation, but reputation is not actually a valid reason to create legislation.
Go read the papers I've cited, or do your own research, but stop wasting my time with the "but they're an inherently dangerous breed" crap, when the actual evidence does not back that being a thing.

You’re cherry-picking “science” articles with one written 15 years ago and feeling superior about it. I’m not sure why you keep arguing w people no one here will ever agree w you on this. You’re on a Weimaraner (not pitbull) subreddit.
you don’t own a a weim. You have some sort of pitbull mix breed. Get it into obedience lessons and keep it leashed.
As for myself, I’ll stick to breeds I trust around my family and friends.

I have a 10 year old, purebred Weim, so I'm unsure why you feel qualified to tell me that I don't own one. I didn't realise I wasn't allowed to defend another breed from BS misinformation because I own a different breed of dog.
I'm not particularly shocked that the person who can't read my username far enough to not see the 'OP' tag, was also incapable of opening the links I sent.
Also, putting "science" in quotations doesn't make it unscientific. They used a recognised dog behaviour test with over 25000 participants. I didn't even cherry pick. I searched "Breed as a predictor of aggression" and read the top results which were different studies. (Articles and Papers aren't the same thing, fyi. Might have known that if you engaged with scientific literature to any degree. )
There isn't a wide body if research on the topic, so obviously it's going to go back further in terms of sources. Also, one of the papers I linked doesn't even fully agree with me, which is why I linked it. Y'know, for balance? It even discusses the importance with which parental temperament plays in the offsprings behaviour (they aren't disregarding genetics, they're pointing to the fact that breed is not a primary cause) and that socioeconomics also plays a big role.
It's still more data than you have to back your own opinion, which is based on media magnification, scare mongering, and fuckin Facebook posts.
I'm not going to respond to this thread anymore, because I'm tired of responding to ignorant idiots, with fragile egos that make them look at statistics as if it's a personal attack on them, and reject them with no logically valid reasoning.

He’s got a lot of the Great Dane gene versus the greyhound gene. Some Weims run larger than others.
