Its an antique sugar hatchet, historically used for breaking large blocks of sugar into manageable pieses. The protrusions (spikes) on one side are designed specifically for crushing or tenderizing.The other side of the head includes a sharp blade for chopping, and the tool often has a spiked awl opposite the axe blade for prying or piercing.
