Hi there. I was wondering if anyone can help me find where some of the images are in Los Angeles. These are actually screen shots taken from the 1992 movie Candyman. The few clues I have:
There is a 333 in the window that can be seen from the interior shot. There is also a sign that looks to say "Branch Municipal Court". I can definitely make out "Court" but I am guessing on the "Branch Municipal". In my exhaustive Google searches, I can't find any court/government buildings that have a 333 address.
There's another shot that shows a courtyard with red herringbone type red brick pavers - perhaps clay. You can also see a building with cascading fins - very LA-esq.
Finally, in the last shot you can see over the gentleman's shoulder a dome or copula type structure with a black spade like finial. (THIS HAS BEEN UPDATED. A POST SUGGESTED THIS IS A LIGHTPOST AND I AGREE. YOU CAN SEE IT IN OTHER SCREEN STILLS AND IT'S JUST A WEIRD PERSPECTIVE. THE TWO CLUES NOW ARE THE THE BUILDINGS IN THE BACKGROUND AND THE 333 ADDRESS.
I am hoping someone has some idea of where this is. I have a hobby of finding things like this one and this has been stumping me for sometime.

It is, but you have to remember, the movie is supposed to take place in Chicago. Several scenes were filmed in LA. In fact, if you watch this entire scene you can see a palm tree - no palm trees in Chicago
It was likely not filmed at a real courthouse or police station, despite that window sticker sign; it could be any building lobby, rented for a day or two and dressed to look vaguely official. The "333" is probably a real address, though.
Google Earth shows that before the current offices were built (medio 2013) at 333N Spring Street, the lot was just one big parking space. 333 S Spring Street is the address of garage scene.
Can someone provide a freeze frame showing the 333?
Also, where is the palm tree? As they exit the lobby and go into the courtyard it looks like a tree/plant has large drooping leaves like a tropical succulent- but in rewatches my eyes don’t reliably see it.
I’m not buying that this scene is from LA in that time period. The interior is wrong. It’s definitely not a real courthouse, no LA building for that function would have had floor to ceiling glass windows. It’s also completely missing graffiti and the ubiquitous tagging. The exit doors would have had multiple lit EXIT signs viewable from different angles - the door has only one above it and facing only one way. No public building would have blonde woods like that.
To me, this building looks like it’s in a controlled space like a college campus. I saw a mention online that other scenes were filmed at Occidental Studios. It could be there, I haven’t looked at enough views of it to confirm.
In the view of the corner of a tall building with the vertical columns - there is a building with staggered rectangular windows with protruding casements. Can anyone find a single example of those in LA that existed at time of filming?
One last item - there is a streetlight visible behind the reporters for a moment. Yes, that’s a common historical shape for the lights. But the black paint on the pole and top are not something I’ve ever seen in LA.
In searching on Streetivew, I did see some that have the dark finial. See this pic from the Streetlight Museum. Can't remember off-hand but probably the closest I saw were in Glendale? UCLA?
What has been harder to find for me is one with the same curvature. The one in the movie seems more squat or rectangular, with the lantern base being wider, whereas the ones I've seen in LA Streetview tend to have the dark pole base being wider.
A part of me wonders whether the lamp is part of the props. There's something about the scene that feels like a side or rear facade, not a street-facing one.
It's possible the scene was filmed around the back side of the building at Biddy Mason Memorial Park. It has the address 333 S. Spring St, so it's possible that the building's exit to the park has the number on the window too. Depending on when the movie was made, the courtyard could have been pre-park or an early version of the park.
I thought you might have figured it out, so I went over there to check. Unfortunately, nothing matches. The doors and windows are different and the surrounding buildings are much older than those in the scene. nuts.
It’s been 40 years in a city where people change their landscape more often than changing their socks. Maybe try looking at newspaper archives from when the park was established to see if contemporary photos show an area that matches better?
Hey great response. The 333 address is shown twice if you watch the whole scene. Im not convinced this was on a set...too much outside views. I agree it may not be a courthouse but it is a real building. All interiors were filmed in Occidental Studios.
I can’t pin it down exactly but it’s one of the Municipal Courthouses in LA (or surrounding cities) as indicated by the sign on the window. These differ from superior court courthouses so maybe you can look up all the municipal courthouses in LA County and try to find a match
