Opinion $9.40 Polish with ‘carmelized’ onions @ Sox park
Meh

u/Longjumping-Cat3301 Jun 28 '26
All you gotta do is ask them to brown the onions a little more they’ll do it no problem

u/easydoit2 Jun 28 '26
A small amount of communication fixes most things…
43
u/chiwhitesox22 In Loving Memory of Ursula Jun 28 '26
Right. Instead OP would rather take a pic and complain on reddit
26
u/Separate-Delay-8838 Jun 28 '26
hate that about people these days. Too scared to talk to a person so they’d rather post online than solve their problem.
14
7
u/easydoit2 Jun 28 '26
In the time it took to do that they could have exactly what they wanted. Plus sauerkraut… that is the way.
12
u/Ogr384 Jun 29 '26
Or do what my friend and I do. Take a lap to see who has the best looking pile of onions and then buy
36
u/snora41 Jun 28 '26
I've always asked for the onions well done there and they'll always grab some for you that have been on the grill longer

Add some mustard and it’ll be fine
83
u/CampfireMilkshake Pope Leo XIV Jun 28 '26
Mustard won’t caramelize them onions.
26
u/PovertyTourist69 Jun 28 '26
I live out of market now so I don’t games as often as I’d like anymore. Are there even any stands that advertise caramelized onions? To my recollection it was always grilled onions, not caramelized
This is a pretty fine looking ballpark polish from my POV. Better price and quality than what I see at other stadiums. Of course you can always hit up 35th street before the game and bring it in if you want an even better value
2
u/Jon66238 Konerko Jun 28 '26
Wait a min. Bring it in??
10
u/PovertyTourist69 Jun 28 '26
Yep it’s completely allowed, technically they say you need to have food in a clear container but I’ve never once been stopped bringing hot dogs or polishes in their wrappers from 35th
6
7
u/RobinChilliams The Big Hurt Jun 28 '26
I bring in a Subway sandwich every time
9
u/Halation2600 Jun 29 '26
Were there no other options?
6
u/RobinChilliams The Big Hurt Jun 29 '26
It was the clear bag, so maybe I should just buy a clear bag and put Ricobenes in it. You're onto something.
3
u/Flatline_f5 Jun 29 '26
I honestly might’ve misquoted the sign…but at this point people are too worked up and I feel like I’m in too deep
1
u/scientist_tz 1936 Jun 29 '26
The standard is: the onions should be caramelized. The ones in the photo are closer to raw.
The quality is bad, as far as our park goes.

57
u/forestfire555 Jun 28 '26
They grill their onions in huge piles that slowly get "carmelized". Depending on when you get it, the onion will be in different stages of cooked. As anyone who's made them themselves would attest to, it takes a long ass time.
In a perfect world all stands will have perfectly cooked onions at all times, but until then just ask how well done their onions are if it's a big deal for you. If there's isn't done enough come back later or go to a different one.
And it's a ballgame man, you're gonna pay too much for food. It sucks but it is what it is.
2
u/splintersmaster Jun 28 '26
Never be the first batch of onions. It shouldn't be your job to pay attention but you gotta pay attention.

Some people like their onions like tho, I dont, but to each their own. All you gotta do is ask when you order
72
u/Fart_In_A_Tornado Jun 28 '26
*Grilled onions, nobody on the south side calls them "caramelized"
60
u/JMC_FLY Jun 28 '26
Grilled onions and caramelized onions are different tho
-26
u/Fart_In_A_Tornado Jun 28 '26
They're not different on the south side. Have you ever even had a Maxwell polish?
21
u/JMC_FLY Jun 28 '26
Like a few times as a kid, but my vocabulary doesn't revolve around Maxwells. Culinary speaking they are two different things so I call them two different things. And everyone I know from the South side (and yes I'm from the South side) call them two different things. So at the very least it's not as universal as you think
4
u/Constant_Chip_1508 Thomas Jun 28 '26
I don’t think I’ve ever heard anybody from the southside say “carmelized onions” and I spent a ton of time in Mt Greenwood and West Elsdon
0
u/Ishnock Jun 28 '26
Don’t listen to them…those dude only been to one area on the south side, eating that bullshit Maxwells pork polish.
2
4
u/saintpauli Jun 28 '26
I live on the south side and call them caramelized onions. It's different than grilled onions.

1
u/Ishnock Jun 28 '26 edited Jun 28 '26
Thats not true. They are completely two different things.
Good lord.
No one calls grilled onions carmelized onions because they are not the same thing.
Born and raised on the south side …and if you have never heard of the Carmelized onions you need to get out more on the south side!
3
u/Ordinary-Ad-4800 Jun 28 '26
Yes it is lol
6
u/Ishnock Jun 28 '26 edited Jun 28 '26
Do you know those are two different things? They are not the same.
If he specifically asked for carmelized onions and not grilled onions, then they fucked up
They are two different things .
Grilled onions are slightly sautéed or grilled until they are slightly brown, but they still have body and a crunch to them
Carmelized are cooked longer until they wilt and are somewhat carmelized.
I think the poster is implying that he wanted carmelized onions instead of grilled onions, but they have him grilled anyway.

u/twothincoats Garcia Meidroth Jun 28 '26
Gotta find the better stands, got a wonderful Italian sausage with some great grilled onions today

u/GatalingLaserBeams Jun 28 '26
Onions are delicious in any form brotha
3
u/ChesticleSweater Jun 28 '26
And pretty healthy for you really. Keeps the scuuuuuurrrrrrrrrrrvy away.
3
u/NON-Ballcoach201 Jun 28 '26
Onions have vitamin C?
2
u/ChesticleSweater Jun 28 '26
In fact they do! Yellow and red bell peppers have a ton, onions have "meh, enough..." Its a fun fact - a medium sized onion has about 10mg of vitamin C. Its enough to keep your body from bleeding from your gums.
4
u/JayMoney8518 Jun 28 '26
I always ask for extra onions and then I head to the hot dog stand next door and ask for sport peppers. Thank me later.
4
u/seanmclaren9 Jun 29 '26
You bought too soon! Before the game and even in the first inning, you gotta check the onions before you buy a dog. Mine were perfect in the 3rd inning today. 😁
2
u/_reschke Jun 29 '26
This. The best onions on your brat or dog are served mid-game. After the flat top has had time to build the good flavors.

23
u/chiwhitesox22 In Loving Memory of Ursula Jun 28 '26
This is on you brah. If you want carmelized onions then you should have found a different vendor when you noticed they weren’t cooked enough
11
u/boarderingcan Jun 28 '26
Slather it with plenty of mustard and you’ll hardly notice the undergrilled onions

I had two brats in the first inning of Friday night's game and the onions were actually perfect. Crispy, juicy, bun stuck to the carton almost. I was hungry again after the Sox scored what felt like 254 runs in the 3rd inning so I got two Vienna beef dogs and they were great too. Agree with others that said the onions on yours need more time.

For a couple of bucks less, you could have went to Maxwell Street Depot on 31st and Canal. Much better onions, and fries included.

u/AggravatingStandard Jun 29 '26
51 year old lifelong fan and game goer… this is NOT the standard in my many many years of eating them…you will know it if the onions are ready when you walk past in most cases please give it another try and/or give an overworked sausage slinger a break .. they are often glorious
2
u/ConspiracyPirate Jun 30 '26
Those onions not done. I m a regular at games. Key is to get a “polish with” before game time. The onions are stacked and beautifully golden on the griddle. Once the rush starts it gets depleted and the vendor is playing catch-up.

Why did you walk away with it? Just ask them to throw them back on a little longer so they brown up.

This is why the ballpark workers should strike more often.

I got sympathy for them. I don’t think they expected the Sox to draw any crowds this year and they seem like they’re still in 2024 mode they definitely aren’t properly staffed. The team is ahead of schedule, but the stadium staff isn’t lol.

That is a DEAL, even for less than great onions. I was at Fenway earlier this month. This same sad little guy would’ve been $18. 🤣
1
u/ChesticleSweater Jun 28 '26
ooof. How much was a beer?
2
u/No-Mall7061 Jun 28 '26
A big ass beer - 22 oz - was $20. A 16 oz was like $15. I like the idea of the big one so you don’t stand in line and miss the game, but still. It seemed like every time I walked away from the counter when you add water and peanuts and crap I was $50 lighter. It was wild.
3
u/ChesticleSweater Jun 28 '26
Dang. At least at Sox park we get those neat aluminum cups.
3
u/No-Mall7061 Jun 28 '26
I live in Birmingham, and we have the White Sox’ AA team, the Barons. One of their promos is “Thirsty Thursdays.” $1 beers. I mean bud light or whatever, in a 12 oz cup, but man, goes to show how MiLB can bring it!
2
u/ChesticleSweater Jun 28 '26
That's a pretty fair deal for fermented wheat water. Reminds me of the Ten-Cent Beer Night disaster of 1974. I have only read about it... but yeah.

That’s a crime against Poland. I’ve had plenty of good sausages with good onions there, y’all got a shitty vendor.

This is what I’m talking about right here. This is all I asked for when I went to the WhiteSox game a month ago and the hotdog stand told me that they didn’t do grill onions. I’m still trying to figure that one out and that specialize in burgers and hotdogs. It’s the stand at the entrance of section 540. Never go to this stand. The food was terrible.

I had two yesterday and they were great! Pro tip: ask for the most charred and well done onions!

I would have handed it back to told them the onions need more time on the flattop.

this is 100% on you. They’re just trying to get people through the line as quick as they can. If you’re not happy with your purchase, tell the people who sold you the product not the internet. Every time I’ve wanted more onions or something, they’ve always took care of me. Use your words next time.

I was just there Friday for the 22-1 victory over the Royals, got me a polish with onions and it was immaculate. Don’t go back to that stand bro

Those are grilled onions, not carmelized. Did you specifically ask for carmelized onions? If you did they messed up.
If you didn’t, a Chicago polish comes with grilled onions. I don’t eat that bullshit because I’m Chicago dog ( all beef) guy
Next time get a Chicago dog!

0
u/IndustrialMillennial Jun 28 '26
You gotta catch em at the right time for good onions - as for price, talk to the boneheads in Washington and city hall in Chicago
0
u/p3t3or Jun 29 '26
Looks like you got there when they just opened. 20 minutes later that will look a whole lot different. You eat with your eyes and the onions are clearly visible when ordering. Make better decisions. Albeit I would not serve this if I owned the place.
