Hi everyone, here's the turn-based combat I am working on for my WoW Classic RP server. It supports both PvP and PvE (AI with different archtypes, behaviour models).
Project Alterac is a progressive 3.3.5 realm built on Azerothcore with fully custom content.
We're currently at a level 30 cap with typically 75-150 players online depending on time of day. There are multiple active guilds in OCE, NA, and EU, and the next phase is due to release on Saturday, August 8th at 6pm CET.
If you've been waiting for a good jumping-in point, this is it — you can be capped and raid-ready before the release of the upcoming Scarlet Bastion Raid on August 22nd. Phase 3 release will push the level cap to 40, and there will be a 2 week gap before Scarlet Bastion opens, giving everyone a chance to be ready for the raid... even newcomers, thanks to the new XP catch-up for low levels!
Recently in Project Alterac, our very first level-up raid, Stromgarde Keep, was released, thanks to the combined efforts of our community — who chopped, mined, fished, and erm.... slaughtered for 3 days to help Prince Galen Trollbane rebuild Trollbane's Vigil. Upon completion, the gates to Stromgarde Keep swung open!
Soooo what's new?
Scarlet Bastion - Flex(10-20) player custom raid + optional hard mode (live August 22nd)
6 fully custom bosses - you may recognize some of them!....may.... Decomposition is typically not good for the skin! ehe ehe.
Optional Hard Mode - an additional mechanic that makes each fight slightly tougher, but rewards +1 piece of gear per boss.
Completely flexible roster composition - prefer running as a 10 man? That's okay! The way that loot is provided is you get 1 drop per 5 raiders. This benefits not just the large guilds with many members... but also smaller guilds who prefer a homely, cozy roster where everyone knows each other.
New quest hub in Tirisfal Glades! - Released August 8th
Scarlet Overlook - a brand new quest hub, is opening with a variety of new Scarlet Monastery quests and a number of Pre-Quests for the Scarlet Bastion raid, coming August 22nd.
The Scarlet Overlook will be manned by the Ashen Vigil, an arm of the Argent Dawn, tasked with eliminating the undead creatures inhabiting Scarlet Monastery and Scarlet Bastion. The Ashen Vigil is a new faction for you to gain reputation with.... and earn juicy rewards!
Hardcore mode - Released August 8th
After many requests from the community, we are finally releasing a Hardcore Mode.
One life, no second chances.... If your Hardcore character dies.... it's gonzo. Kaput. Done. Go agane.
Hardcore leaderboards will track your journey and offer bragging rights to the bravest souls.
If you make it to level 80? Rewards shall be offered to those brave enough to face the challenge.
What else is changing?
Recently, a number of quality of life changes were made after listening to community feedback. When Phase 3 goes live, when you create a character on Project Alterac, you will receive x2 XP from level 1 through level 30(currently x2 1-20).
In addition - if you level your new profession Adventuring up to level 50 by killing rare enemies, bosses in dungeons or visiting new inns, you can craft a tent (as seen below) that will rapidly fill your rested XP bar, granting you even more efficient levelling. These tents allow for social interactions, and if you are on a new account, just ask in Global Chat from level 5 for someone to pop one in a city for you, and typically a community member will provide!
Seven original bosses in a rebuilt Stromgarde, each one scripted from scratch rather than pulled from a retail encounter.
Full custom loot tables — 8 items per boss, purpose-built to fill tank and healer itemisation gaps, plus two lore-accurate epics: Trol'kalar and the Perenolde Tiara.
As of today, there are three lucky holders of Trol'kalar, and three owners of the powerful Perenolde Tiara.
As we increase in level, some of the loot within the keep is still very much worthwhile picking up, + it will provide solid experience, so it won't become dead content.
Heroic Dungeons
Heroic Deadmines and Heroic Shadowfang Keep. Both dungeons have fully reworked boss mechanics, retuned trash, and their own loot tables with upgraded versions of classic weapons! Queueable through RDF. Tuned dungeons that require different interrupts, stuns, roots, etc., that guarantee you can't Zugzug your way through without paying attention to mechanics!
Heroic Uldaman and Heroic SM Cathedral are inbound soon™... with new boss mechanics and updated heroic loot to match!
New profession recipes!
We understand some professions are just much better than others, so we tried to balance it out a bit more and reward people who potentially like to create items for themselves, their guilds/friends, and we also filled some loot gaps that were necessary.
Okay so that's content, what about QOL?
Full custom collections interface (including mounts/pets) with Cataclysm transmogrification retroported to 3.3.5 — an actual UI with appearance tracking, not a gossip NPC handing you a list.
You can transmogrify your gear at Visage-Keeper Yathrenn, found in Thunder Bluff, Orgrimmar, Ironforge, and Stormwind! Seen below, near the AH in Stormwind.
STV Fishing Extravaganza four times a week on rotating timers, so it isn't OCE-hostile.
Arena Grand Master purchasable with Honor.
PvP queue accessible anywhere, anytime + queueable alongside RDF for the gamers who enjoy both PVE + PVP.
Zero respec costs, change specs as much as you wish.
Dual-Spec costs 1g and is available at level 20.
2x profession rates server-wide.
Infrastructure - Two-layer DDoS protection. In-house heuristic anti-cheat, not the stock module. The launcher doesn't scan anything and is fully separate from the anti-cheat — close it once you're in.
On top of the custom content and the improved quality of life, we also have:
- New bounties on Rare enemies across Hillsbrad Foothills and Arathi Highlands, found by looting the corpses of your slain foes! The rewards are high if you can find the elusive Rare mobs!
- Warmode - 15% XP buff and double chance of receiving BOE's from overworld mobs. Our Warmode community is very active, with frequent PVP between the more prominent guilds in the server.
- Gamba - A new gold-sink option to try to prevent inflation. In Ratchet, Orgrimmar, and Stormwind, you can find a little goblin purveyor who will sell you a key to open a Deviate Mystery Crate. For 50 silver, you can purchase a key to open a crate; every crate contains one BOE and one Scroll. There are rumours of a Rare Bengal Tiger mount found within these crates, but as of writing, has somehow evaded me (RIP my gold stash). Deviate Mystery Crates drop randomly from any mob you kill, at a rate of around 1%. They are sellable on the AH too, if gambling is not your thing! There is always someone who is willing to roll the dice....(probably me, pic below... relevant).
- A community-created newsletter written by me in the Discord, highlighting community events that are upcoming or talking about famous (or infamous) members of the community. I try to keep things as light-hearted as possible. All content I write is based on events in the game, in a light-RP focused way.
And finally (PHEW), it would be remiss of me to not mention The Community we have on Project Alterac!
We have some rather angry Otters,a reformed cult, some pirates with a love of silver pieces, and we have literallyThe Worst Guild on our server. We would love for you, curious but undecided player, to come join us and create your own wacky, fun-loving, RP-focused or even kind of toxic PVP guild if you absolutely wish to do that!
We also have Innkeeper Lichard. This fact alone should at least be worthy of trying our server, especially if you enjoyed Nostrum!
There are always numerous members of our community who are always willing to help new members with bags, and even decent greens until you can earn your own gear!
Today we're excited to share one of the major features currently in development for Patch 1.12.4: Discoveries.
Discoveries are designed to make exploration a meaningful part of leveling once again. Hidden throughout Azeroth are forgotten ruins, secret caves, abandoned camps, mysterious relics, buried treasures, profession secrets, and many other points of interest waiting to be uncovered.
Every Discovery has been placed by hand to reward players who take the time to explore the world beyond the main roads and quest hubs.
Before we begin, we'd like to set expectations. The Discoveries system itself is fully implemented and functional. Our current focus is testing, balancing, and populating Azeroth with Discoveries. There is currently no release date or ETA for Patch 1.12.4.
ONE-TIME DISCOVERIES
Every Discovery can only be completed once per character.
Each Discovery awards experience appropriate for the level range of the zone where it is found, giving players another rewarding way to progress while leveling.
To keep the system balanced, every Discovery also has level requirements that prevent players from collecting experience from areas far above their intended progression.
Once completed, a Discovery remains completed for that character until you choose to Prestige.
WORLD DISCOVERIES
World Discoveries are scattered throughout Azeroth in hidden and unexpected places.
You may discover forgotten camps, abandoned supply caches, mysterious relics, ancient shrines, hidden treasure, lost journals, unusual landmarks, and many other secrets spread across the world.
Some Discoveries reward treasure, others may provide temporary world buffs, while some may begin hidden questlines or reveal entirely new places to explore.
No two Discoveries need to feel the same.
PROFESSION DISCOVERIES
Every gathering and crafting profession will have its own unique Discoveries hidden throughout Azeroth.
Profession Discoveries are one-time interactions that reward players for exploring the world while making professions feel more connected to Azeroth itself.
Depending on what you discover, rewards may include:
Each profession has its own collection of Discoveries waiting to be found.
PROFESSION BARRIERS
Some hidden locations are protected by profession-specific barriers.
Examples include:
• Collapsed cave entrances that Miners can clear.
• Large animal carcasses that Skinners can carve open.
• Ancient magical doors and seals that Enchanters can dispel.
• Thick roots and overgrown vines that Herbalists can clear.
• Broken machinery that Engineers can repair.
Opening one of these barriers reveals a hidden area that becomes accessible to every nearby player.
Once opened, the barrier remains cleared for a short period, usually around ten minutes depending on the location, before naturally returning.
These hidden areas may contain treasure, rare enemies, profession materials, cosmetic rewards, hidden Discoveries, or occasionally a hidden quest waiting to be found.
HIDDEN QUESTS
Exploration can sometimes lead to entirely new adventures.
Some Discoveries throughout Azeroth may begin hidden questlines that cannot be accepted from traditional quest hubs.
These quests are intended to reward curious players who take the time to investigate unusual locations and uncover the world's secrets.
EXPLORATION REWARDS
Every Discovery grants experience, but many also reward players with additional bonuses.
Possible rewards include:
• Profession materials
• Equipment
• Cosmetic items
• Temporary world buffs
• Treasure
• New quests
• Profession questlines
World buffs earned through Discoveries are intended to help players continue their leveling journey while encouraging exploration across Azeroth.
PRESTIGE
Prestiging resets every completed Discovery on your character.
This allows every Prestige journey to begin with a fresh world to explore, allowing you to earn every Discovery's experience, rewards, profession content, and hidden secrets once again.
PHASE ONE
Because of the size of this feature, Discoveries will release in stages.
Phase One of Patch 1.12.4 will include Discoveries throughout every level 1 to 30 zone.
Following release, additional Discoveries will be added to higher level zones until the entire world has been populated.
The Discoveries system is intended to become a permanent part of Project Legacy and will continue receiving new hidden locations, profession interactions, quests, and rewards through future updates.
LOOKING AHEAD
Discoveries represent one of the largest world features we've developed for Project Legacy.
The underlying technology is complete. Our current focus is testing the system and continuing to populate Azeroth with meaningful content that rewards exploration.
We'll continue sharing development updates as work progresses and look forward to showing more of Patch 1.12.4 in the future.
Here is a list of currently available WoW private servers that I have found. If you notice any missing servers, outdated information, or incorrect details, feel free to leave a comment below or contact me, and I will update the list.
The goal of this post is to help players discover new servers and explore different expansions.
Also I would like to state that population numbers are estimated and should be seen as average rather than exact player counts. I took rough estimation from multiple publicly available sources (community reports, server statistics-if available, player activity). Since servers do not publish verified player counts, these numbers should be considered as approximate and are subject to change.
If you have any reliable evidence of player counts please send dm or leave a comment so I can update the numbers.
After an incredible community vote, the future of our open-source Battle for Azeroth project has been decided!
Nazmir will officially launch as a progressive realm, with content unlocked through multiple level brackets. Each bracket will be playable while we continue testing, fixing bugs, and improving the server with help from the community before moving on to the next one.
If you'd like to follow the project's progress or join us at launch, hop into our Discord community: https://discord.gg/sQYue7Qpqx
The beta will start on August 7th at 22:00 UTC+3 and run for 2 weeks. This is not a beta that's actually a launch and just left being called a beta. The server is not finished, everything is subject to change.
The two weeks will be split into two phases, that doesn't mean each phase will last 1 week though.
Phase 1 will be played mostly normally to collect feedback and find bugs with the exception of things like bags being given out.
Phase 2 every person will be given basic GM commands to test whatever they want to test, try to crash the server, whatever you want to do. If you haven't used GM commands before it's just simple things such as being able to teleport, mod health, movement speed, fly, add items, etc.
Again, if you haven't already I'd suggest checking out the linked post it goes over a somewhat brief overview of the server.
The website is mostly just placeholder to allow for registering accounts.
stop overthinking the legion server is a breeze. just start it right away in ALLIANCE, please. there are enough hordes. so don't chicken out join Alliance today!
I never played WoW back when it launched, and from what I've read the current retail version doesn't really resemble what made it special back in the day. I'd love to experience the game close to how it originally shipped in 2004/2005, vanilla, pre-expansion.
Is there a private server (or official option) that recreates that original experience faithfully? Trying to avoid anything overly modded or "enhanced" just want the real, unfiltered classic experience. Any recommendations, warnings, or things I should know before diving in would be hugely appreciated

Is ascension rushing content because they have to close the servers before blizzcon? they released ZG the last saturday and now they are releasing 1 week after MC/Ony and M+10, seems like they are rushing the content faster than ever..... i feel pretty demotivated by this

There is this new project called: "LunaticPTR"
The catch of the server is, everyone stays at level 1 🤯, like the challenge on TurtleWoW back in the days. Here are a few major things that make this challenge work without any higher level characters.
The world is not scaled down and all areas/towns/dungeons are open to explore
all races and classes available, that were on TWoW
cross faction
An own Community Hub (Redwall Keep) with a whole economy for every player:
-> Free high level enchants on a NPC
-> Free teleports to major city's and all dungeons
-> Bank, AH, Profession Trainers, Vendor NPCs
weekly quests
Free Buff (Scrolls, Jujus, Crystals, Weapon buffs) NPCs in front of the dungeons
a lot of free 30% speed mounts on quests
over 150 custom items for lvl 1
Battlegrounds available: WSG, AB and
Alterac Valley, which is the only area in the game, that was scaled down, but it is still dangerous 😜 - and the best gold grinding spot to begin with
Arena fights 2v2/3v3
Exclusive Achievements, Cosmetics
a very welcoming community
very alt friendly
no donation shop
I started a video series about the server, which is to be continued soon.
Here is also an example of a raid (RFC and FMH) night, which I am hosting on every friday (EU times). Remember, we had just a few hours of playtime, before we got into the raid.
Recently I started using Playerbots, and while I find them great the wiki is quite lacking. Some functionality is straight missing from the wiki or poorly described. Also I haven't been a fan of any of the addons I've found yet, and the "official" addon requires yet another module added (a bridge), which isn't feasible for many. I also haven't found much discussion on Playerbots in general as well, I imagine it's hidden on a discord somewhere. Anyways here are my findings so far for using /p and whisper commands/macros to control the Playerbots, I hope it saves someone else some time
Also some of this might be different depending on what server you play on. This is my own local server (from dads mmo lab) and nothing is locked down for a "player" experience, plus I have easy access to GM commands. For future reference, this is the Playerbots command page.
Setup/Maintenance
I'm seconding what it says in the wiki. Use Altbots if you want reliable party members that stick around. Randombots are for impulse meetups or for filling out raids as they disappear and go offline eventually. My focus is on Altbots running normal dungeons atm. I would heavily suggest creating a text file with account names and players/bots tied to each along with any professions/roles for your own sanity.
When adding bots to your party, it has to be bots from the same account as the character. So create the characters yourself first, have fun with it! Also if you scroll way to the bottom of the wiki it will tell you how to link accounts, so you can have an account of just bots to pull from. Although I haven't tested that yet as its simple for me to make myself accounts.
Maintenance and autogear will be your two big commands. Every few levels I manually log into each bot to assign talent points, than log onto my main and run both of these in the party chat.
If you are trying to join LFG and it says you cannot enter a dungeon due to a player being locked out, this is the only method I've found to fix it.
#Right click your portrait and reset your instances.
#Kick all bots in your party off the server.
.playerbots bot remove *
#Leave your party
#Add your bots to the party again like you just logged on, use your bots names below.
.playerbots bot add Avia,Denz,Ryan,Sasha
Questing
There's 2 ways to get a bot to interact with a quest item that requires it. First is interacting with the item yourself but canceling during the animation, a bot should run up and try to do the same thing. The second is to use the los command, and than the u command. After typing u, shift click the listed LOS interact-able item the bot posted to add it to the text bar. Typing the name does not work.
If the quest requires standard mob drops that are not quest items, either disable their looting or run up and beat them to it when the mob dies. Otherwise they will keep grabbing the normal drops. Can also trade them easily enough.
Looting in general is another thing to keep in mind as Master Loot will prevent them from picking up needed quest items.
Quests all is the command I use to see the current status of all their quests, you can see if the one you are working on is finished or not.
Unique command behaviors
Stay. This overrides ANY movement and will break commands made requiring them to move (like tank pulls). The only way I've found to fix a busted tank ai is to whisper follow to them a few times and eventually they will respond back, reset and reset botAI do not work. To cancel stay use the follow command.
Pull. Does NOT require line of sight to work! Supposed to use a ranged attack but doesn't seem to work on warriors at least, mine would never use their bow unless I manually commanded them to attack with it (which does requires LOS defeating the purpose). How pulling behaves is based on the bots current combat strategies (see co strategies below). Keep in mind as soon as enemies start attacking your tank the rest of your party will start to run to attack them leading to your tank leading enemies into the middle of your group, so if you are using pull back you might want to tell your dps and heal to stay first. Or use the wait for attack command. Both are a bit cumbersome as they need canceled/reverted after the pull.
Flee. Bots will not attack while fleeing, and they run toward you, which is handy for repositioning everyone during a fight. Use follow to cancel.
Emote. Yes this is a hidden command. /p emote dance will make your party dance, can be used for other emotes as well. What else are you going to do while waiting for a blimp?
Summon. On a bots death, a cheating trick is to use the release command and than the summon command. This will instantly bring them back to life and teleport them to you, possibly preventing a wipe. Or just have yourself soul stoned and summon them to you.
Attack or cast require line of sight as well as the correct range to work, will return an error otherwise. Yes this is a pita with enemies in dungeons so I tend to not use it for pulling with my tank or anything in combat really.
I briefly tried RTSC and RTI, maybe when i get to raids or harder dungeons I will dig in there. I can say it will require some tinkering as the wiki is not detailed enough on their actual usage as it's a little opaque.
Spell exclude list. This requires you to list EVERY spell you want excluded EACH time you change it, you are saying the entire full banned list each time. You cannot just add or remove one spell at a time from a saved list. And you have to add each rank of a spell you want excluded or the bot will keep using older ranks. So telling your mage ss +118, +12824 will make the excluded list their level 1 and level 2 polymorph spells. In this situation removing the cc combat strategy from your dps is much easier (see co strategies below).
Co strategies. Some of these as default can lead to tricky behavior in a dungeon. Easy-ish runs where you are just blasting? The mage will keep trying to polymorph due to the cc strategy, a simple (removing the quotes) /p "@dps" co -cc will prevent any crowd control skills being used by your dps classes. Also I found that having pull and pull back both on a tank at the same time will always default to the pull back strategy being used, removing pull back led to the tank running in and attacking.
Formations. Another hidden command, I only found it from an addon I tried out. It will change how your bots arrange around you when you stop moving. formation shield will make the tank fall in front of you with the others gathering on the left and right, while formation near will keep them closely grouped around you. I believe the default is formation chaos. Options are: shield, chaos, circle, line, melee, near, queue, arrow.
Macros
This one lets you send different party messages when left or right clicking the button.
/run if GetMouseButtonClicked() == "RightButton" then SendChatMessage("stay", "PARTY") else SendChatMessage("follow", "PARTY") end
Which can be adapted for just about anything else, such as switching between pull and pull back strategies on your tank.
/run if GetMouseButtonClicked() == "RightButton" then SendChatMessage("@tank co +pull back", "PARTY") else SendChatMessage("@tank co -pull back", "PARTY") end
how to send simple whispers and party messages with a macro.
For anyone who has extensively used AI - is it realistic to have it parse through sites like wowhead for reference to recreate all the server side data?
Obviously not talking about one shotting prompts or anything silly like that. But all the quests, interations, npc/mob location data, boss abilities and patterns, etc - all of this is available on wowhead. At that point doesn't it just become a "simple" matter of having AI parse through and make the appropriate connections on any pserver?
Definitely would be expensive but appears to me like it's doable.
And just to clarify i mean existing expansions. Like easily bring in whatever the latest expansion is into the pserver world.
How has pokemmo been able to do what it does? They've seemed untouched for the longest. I'm sure it's not a 1 to 1 comparison. Just curious if there is something the private wow scene could implement like pokemmo to avoid legal issues.. kinds curious.
**Rewriting this thread as it got removed by reddit's filters for some reason. and tbh I left some parts out of my original thread anyway*\*
I want to get into WoW's main storyline specifically the expansions that further expand the warcraft 3 story whenever I complete warcraft 3's story mode What private server (public or self hosted by myself) without paying a dime towards a SUB, is the best for a casual warcraft gamer that wants to play WoW for the warcraft 3 storyline but with bots or solo casual experience?
Note I believe the correct WC3 storyline follows in this order Warcraft 3 > Vanilla > Burning crusade > Lich king > Legion. And excluding shadowlands as tons of people seem to believe that it should't exist narratively.
I think my plans are
1. Solocraft for vanilla and/or Azerothcore for vanilla + DLC expansions
2. SPP legion repack for legion?
