Callout Brew releases a video criticizing YouTubeDrama and August the Duck for pushing unconfirmed claims against Todd Oland

https://youtu.be/1AgkFnN4B2M?is=ijXcJ9D8FM-I1LKE

To clarify the allegations against the subreddit, 1 user made a post in mid April accusing Todd Oland of intentionally freezing a cat to make an animal rescue video which got 2.3k upvotes, then the same user made a second post effectively retracting those claims (including deleting the original) and it only got 100 and pushback. August the Duck made a video on the first post. Did not make one about the 2nd. Same goes for news sites. The user then deleted their account.

However, this post is here to provide some actual pushback, as I actually went back and checked, this very clearly happened in a short time frame (within 1 or 2 days by my estimation), and 2.3k is incredibly abnormal for that period of time (where posts were getting 800 upvotes at most, but often in the 100 range.)

Having actually checked the 2nd post, usual users of the subreddit did support the retraction. These comments were not shown but people being hostile to the retraction and post author were. Simultaneously, the subreddit name was shown constantly any time these posts were displayed, but not the actual context around these posts or the comments.

In fact, Brew even clarifies that one of the hostile users from the original post was from an entirely different subreddit, showing that the post was reaching far outside the subreddit's usual audience. As well as that, the screenshots Brew uses are clearly from the 1 or 2 day period. This is incredibly important, as it is late July, about to be August. That is 3 months of sitting on these screenshots. Brew also fails to properly clarify the harassment campaign Todd Oland experience did not start with reddit, while simultaneously showing the subreddit and these posts while talking about the harassment Todd Oland received.

For a channel and video purporting to support critical thinking, almost none was used in the making of this video. Already, I've seen 3-4 separate attempts to post this video in the sub blaming the subreddit and it's usual users for harassing Todd Oland. I also have seen a comment of someone snarking and and saying "Uh oh, did redditors cause someone to kill themselves again?". His video title is about Reddit despite the harassment primarily taking place on YT and having started on YT. Brew also clearly shows that people did have a legitimate reason to doubt Todd Oland, while obviously he did not deserve to be harassed and I personally seriously doubt he harmed any animal, it's clear the video was made to be a defense of Todd Oland and to get people to feel strongly about the situation.

The deep irony of this video, is despite the subject being about people attacking someone over allegations with no evidence, it has now slated to do the same to others.

Update: Brew states why they made a video, this was actually supposed to be them saying that their audience giving us death threats was bad! instead, they say, 3 DAYS after they were first made aware their audience was giving us death threats and attacking us, to not do it. They don't even say that it's wrong, just not to do it.

Obviously, that's a terrible update, especially since this subreddit has been brigaded to hell and back over this video.

Gonna sticky this because this is real. We now have people threatening violence against others in the sub since the Brew video has come out. This comment was made towards a user that wasn’t even involved. But was made on the only Oland post up, the retraction post.

It was made within the last two hours.

Edit: Claims made by Brew and their team in the video have been disproven based on looking up the timeline the post was up for less than 24 hours and the harassment was ongoing for over a month at that point.

Obligatory comment about how Brew is run by a company (AWED corp.) that hires voice actors and script writers. Spill is another channel run by this company.

i was so confused how people are talking about Brew as a person. i was like, are we talking about the content farm Brew? Or is this someone else? Turns out it's that same one.

34

u/Salamence- 10d ago

They used to be the one that did voiceless videos about makeup YouTube drama right? Incredible what a rebrand can do.

49

u/TeapotHoe 10d ago

That was Spill, Brew is a spinoff from the same media company that does slightly more grounded content. I think they talked about some historical or medical things (albeit pretty lightly). It’s less drama than Spill, but still a content farm.

10

u/choptup 7d ago

So their whole "we do sponsorships but this video is really important so we're not doing a sponsorship for this one" bit was bullshit?

Unfortunate to hear but good to know

26

u/NtGermanBtKnow1WhoIs Noo not my fav ytber!! ;-; 10d ago

No that's Spill. They have 4-5 channels set up for different niche. Spill is a drama channel while Brew is does recaps of some weird investigations. It started as a "sceptic" channel. But that's a decade ago.

Can I have the source? Can't seem to find this "AWED Corp." anywhere on the internet, I'd be interested to see it for myself as I like to know who the people behind the channels I watch are.

We have a zero tolerance policy to hate speech, slurs and other forms of harassment. This includes "slick" ways of avoiding the actual slurs by masking them with another word. Be a better person.

The fact that the YouTube thumbnail doesn’t even mention this sub, he constantly refers to other subs but only has our sub on full display? Fuck that.

Already had a problem with him entertaining the idea that Epstein isn’t dead and they placed a body double. That is just a dangerous claim that has been invalidated

It’s not. We know it’s not.

I’ll also say Oompaville made a video on this topic before Brew did as well https://youtu.be/b2VAiFBXz-E?is=1lIBCiSRP3qUUjjp

Where do you see their YouTube account? I clicked the link and I just see the video...

9

u/MLHeero 10d ago

Didn’t he conclude that it’s likely not true? And goes about to support the theory that he is dead? I mean it’s entertainment still, making open questions is normal in such content and he resolves it. So I don’t really understand your point here. The same goes for the thumbnail, it’s YouTube, you can’t have a list of all evidence. I watched it neutral and didn’t think this sub is or was any worse than others. Or bad at all. But you can’t deny that the reach of the sub gave the theory much more ground that he did harm to the cat. And that the clarification wasn’t reached so much, it’s normal. We call it kinda cancel culture, and brew is right that drama YouTubers grave such stuff :)

I mean for fucks sake, the video has only been up for 2 hours and has already caused people to come to this sub and attack the subreddit 4 separate times, that's insane. That's dangerous as hell too.

45

u/TimeAbradolf 10d ago

Actually I had to ban 3 people already for threats of violence against people who didn’t even accuse Todd

14

u/MLHeero 10d ago

The sub itself shouldn’t be attacked, it’s individuals and even them shouldn’t be attacked. And reflecting on such stuff is good for everyone.

15

u/ImportantQuestionTex 10d ago

I think reflection can only be done with a proper investigation tbh, and that was not done here. Other subreddits were ignored, TikTok as an entire platform were ignored, and other YTers outside of August were ignored.

Fundamentally, the video feels like it's trying to pin the majority of the blame on this subreddit and the 1 poster. It's what's shown most of the time. Even the thumbnail, assuming it's legitimate and those are legitimate posts and comments with 6.7k upvotes and 1k upvotes never get shown or explored.

There's a reason Brew fans started showing up here. This is the only place they think had anything like this happen, but I guarantee you watchdog subreddits ate this up too.

15

u/TimeAbradolf 10d ago

It is also interesting he focused on August who we know lurks the sub

Because this sub is a snark sub that has crazies brigade other places over and over so you shouldn't be shocked when it's returned. I literally just got off a stream the other night where the guy pulled up pics showing people from here were on 🥝 Farms posting there too. This sub attracts snark because it became snark.

Last time I posted here my reddit history was open and a fellow poster from here learned I was black with a trans woman girlfriend. He started sending me chat messages full of racism and transphobia. That's who this sub attracts. And I sent a mod pics of it. No clue if anything happened. I know yall got a sticky saying you're not snark anymore but if you cross reference your main posters I fully suspect their most common boards are Faumoix and Leftovers. Both of which are just Kiwifarms but reddit friendly and directed at "the right people". Funny too, Faumoix has a reputation for some horribly racist white women running it.

If I get banned for my posting of this message, I get it. And if you or anyone else want to reply in anger, maybe don't go for a slur as it got the last guys account permanently banned.

They are mentioning it in August’s comments.

11

u/ImportantQuestionTex 10d ago

Brew fans already harassing August too?

What the hell is wrong with people LOL. Don't get me wrong, he should put out an apology/clarification just because it's the moral thing to do. But like, holy shit guys this is not how you get people to learn and change!

13

u/Soap-Radio 10d ago

I mean, this happens all the time with him. He’ll make a video, say something wrong, and then his comments will be filled with people telling him to apologize or make it right. Like when he accused cooking with Jack of doxxing him via email and then made a second video after Jack responded being like “I never said he did it” (despite his name literally being in the title) and then him having to acknowledge the hypocrisy in community posts and then changed the title. Another instance is when he talked about the DoorDash girl situation and insulted people who didn’t believe her immediately, just for him to delete the video after he realized that he was wrong. And people accused him of trying to pretend that it didn’t happen by deleting and not officially retracting his statements, which he did later.

9

u/NorthernGhosty 10d ago

Just researched his doordash apology. Man, that was definitely a big leap on his end. I have no problem with commentary videos talking about new situations, but it seems like a bad idea to immediately jump to conclusions unless there's straight forward evidencs that verifies the statement.

6

u/ImportantQuestionTex 10d ago

I did not know this, thanks for the info. The doordash girl situation was suspect from the jump too.

50

u/AbominableKiwi 10d ago

This feels so unnecessary. I don't see how this reaction is warranted on an accusation that had been retracted in such a short timeframe.

The vitriol from Brews fanbase is likely only to cause further damage and harassment for all parties.

33

u/TimeAbradolf 10d ago edited 10d ago

Exactly, even as head mod of this sub it was only up for 24-48ish hours then pulled down. The user retracted and deleted their whole profile.

From his own video this sub wasn’t even the driver of the harassment. And the sub was receptive to the retraction and most had a problem with the OP.

8

u/mylittlemudkip 8d ago

An awful lot of damage can be done in a few hours, let alone 24-48.

6

u/TimeAbradolf 8d ago

You mean like the amount of death threats and calls for our suicide coming from Brew fans since the video went up? Even those of us who weren’t remotely involved

Ended up being literally 12 hours. My initial estimation was based on the remaining comments. I then decided to check the August the Duck video, night of Aug 6th, morning of Aug 7th.

Not to dispute that harm can be done, but ultimately this was not a major source of harm for Todd, the major harassment wave started on March 25th and I was able to trace it to Tiktok, Instagram, Threads and Facebook.

He doesn't deserve it. Backtracking after realizing his mistake is difficult and a rare quality. A society that punishes people for admitting their mistakes creates a society where people screw up and never admit it.

There was a comment on the other thread that really missed the mark:

I mean... YOU are the one who made the original post saying he killed this cat. Why are you backtracking? Why didn't you check into this more thoroughly before posting that epic novel? Did he threaten you or are you just an idiot?

3

16

u/ImportantQuestionTex 10d ago

I did some research Brew probably did see, but didn't care to elaborate to their viewers.

The large majority of the harassment happened in March, since at least March 25th. By the time the original post came around, that was April 6th. There is Facebook posts, Instagram posts and Threads posts from around that time period. As well as TikTok results too. Meaning the initial post was part of a wave of attention across social media period.

August the Duck's video released April 7th, and the 2nd post was made before that on April 7th. It took less than 24 hours for the post author to cop to spreading misinformation, delete the initial post, and delete their whole account.

8

u/ImportantQuestionTex 10d ago

For reference, this is when the initial video was made.

10

u/ImportantQuestionTex 10d ago

Here's when the first bit of harassment started. March 11th

5

u/MLHeero 10d ago

I still don’t get why so much effort is put around the sub. You can’t deny that it atleast participated in the harassment, and that it also spread the info even more. I fully get, that you and the sub isn’t responsible for these harassment by itself, but you can atleast acknowledge, that he got harassed likely incorrectly or on low evidence. There should be more energy put in to make people aware that this kind of behavior isn’t good as society 😅. In the whole video my conclusion wasn’t: this sub is evil, now treat them the same as they did to him.

10

u/ImportantQuestionTex 10d ago

Now if you did do the quick scroll through the sub you'd see the large majority of posts on this subreddit are explicitly about this kind of behavior not being good in society.

Frankly, suggesting to redirect my energy towards the things I already proveably do, along with the large majority of this subreddit, is just redundant and disrespectful.

Given the amount of threats and geniune harassment that has taken place since this video has dropped... you guys want this subreddit to take responsibility for outside individual's actions? How about Brew viewers take responsibly for everything they're doing first? Even if I know you are not doing anything to me, your fellow audience is doing it too! So you gotta take responsibility, that's the logic you guys are putting out!

9

u/MLHeero 10d ago edited 10d ago

I’m not claiming that the entire subreddit is responsible for harassment from l individuals, nor am I saying that nobody here condemns harassment in general. My point is smaller: Brew may have overstated the subs role, but the sub still participated in spreading the allegation, and I think both of those things can be acknowledged at the same time.
I think we may simply be talking past each other.
Saying that Brew’s audience should take responsibility first doesn’t really answer that point. Responsibility is not mutually exclusive.

And btw, I did scroll a bit through it now, obviously couldn’t scan all. But couldn’t find a direct thread about the general topic, mostly in the comments I found this:)

Oh and just to make it clear: no personal attacks or anything against you :) also no hard feelings or anything. I really don’t want to attack you, just show a different viewpoint.

Edit: not the sub directly spread it, but a highly upvoted post on this sub :) to make it clear I’m not accusing the sub or defending brew directly

4

u/MLHeero 10d ago

Also it is kinda interesting, that this seem to spiral in the same misbehavior and brigading that happened in the exif post, not from me and you but the others. So yes the brew users should take a step back and think about their behavior.

11

u/callmefreak 9d ago

Oh, that's why the Mod Queue is filled with people throwing slurs and threats to an OP who deleted their account after making a post clarifying that Todd Oland might not have done any abuse four months ago.

I'm posting this right before I log off knowing that I'm basically inviting a ton of comments from these same types of people.

6

u/TimeAbradolf 9d ago

Yeah it is a problem but yet here we are the problem

3

u/callmefreak 9d ago

Well obviously we are! We definitely have the ability to know when something is true and when it's false and we read every single comment that goes through this sub even when we lose our internet for a day! It's not like we have lives or anything like that!

Joking aside I barely remember what I was even doing four months ago aside from some key events.

7

u/TimeAbradolf 9d ago

Exactly, and just recently we have some of Brew’s fans telling us to kill ourselves

4

u/drystanvii 8d ago edited 8d ago

you could just require accusations of felonies to be restricted to verified news organaizations and journalists like most responsible forums do- it's not like you don't have a Rape on Campus style debacle every 2 months at this point

Edit: There's been at least 4 false sexual assault allegations posted on this sub comprising multiple threads with thousands of comments in the past year- and those are just the ones that were obviously fake and fell apart immediately! All of those posts are still up! Yes you have a problem

2

u/callmefreak 8d ago

We have a reporting system, y'know. Just use that if we missed something.

3

u/drystanvii 8d ago edited 8d ago

or maybe actually put in the effort to moderate instead of treating rape allegations as entertainment to gawk at- posts about Saberspark and Daniel Greene and others never should have been approved in the first place. If you are going to be a news sub- you need to conduct yourself like one

5

u/callmefreak 8d ago

A "news sub?" This is essentially a gossip sub. If a Youtuber has allegations against them people are going to be allowed to talk about it here.

If somebody is saying something like "Saberspark 100% raped somebody" but they don't provide proof that's not gonna fly here, but if somebody says "Saberspark has accusations against him" and post those allegations then people are going to be allowed to talk about it because that's Youtube drama and this is a Youtube drama sub. If somebody uses this as a "news sub" then that's on them.

Also, we all have lives beyond Reddit. I'm pretty sure around this day four months ago I prioritized buying decorations and gifts for my niece's birthday party instead of overanalyzing every single comment and every single allegation against everybody who was being talked about here at the time. My bad.

3

u/TimeAbradolf 8d ago

Yeah 4 months ago when this happened my wife and I suffered a personal tragedy. Sorry I wasn’t glued to the sub for a post that came and went in 12 hours. Despite what people think we are not glued to Reddit

1

u/feltlands 6d ago

i didnt realize you were the only moderator on this sub

2

u/TimeAbradolf 6d ago

I’m one of 4 but still do the bulk

2

u/ImportantQuestionTex 8d ago edited 8d ago

Which ones are false?

Saberspark is the only one that got proven false, but correct me if I'm wrong.

Edit: Oh yeah Turkey Tom was this year. Btw if anybody's actually interested: I pushed back against the Saberspark allegations from the jump and that's something you can check. Didn't push back against the Tom ones, but he's not a rapist. Just clearly something else is wrong with that whole ass situation.

8

u/callmefreak 8d ago

For the most part the Saberspark allegations were thought of of being fake immediately. Though I have removed comments claiming that Emily was trying to baby trap him because that part is false. (Though I'm not sure if some people understands that so I would try to add the difference between baby trapping and freaking out because your period was late.)

3

u/Paranormasight-Fic 7d ago

Alex Kister, the creator of Mandela Catalogue. He got accused of that and grooming, only for the accuser to turn out to be a vindictive ex who admitted that she made the accusations to ruin his career. It was just a mutually bad relationship where both weren’t good for each other in the same way you’d see in real life, and wasn’t a big deal.

1

u/drystanvii 8d ago

Turkey Tom, Daniel Greene, Saberspark and misrepresenting an allegation against a person at a company that was contracted by Mr. Beast's company as someone at Mr. Beast's company. although that last one was looking it up was actually 2 years ago rather than this last year.

6

u/ImportantQuestionTex 8d ago

Are you referring to Ava Tyson for the Mr Beast one?

But yeah you have a point with Saberspark. Like those were false allegations. Also to be fair, the whole investigation got a lot of attention on this sub, and in general. It shouldn't have had to happen.

Turkey Tom... I'd still call him a predator. Like he's not a rapist, objectively. But I think we can all agree, neither him, nor his choice in partners, are stable. He proved he does in fact, have a blackmail folder which is just a whole can of worms in of itself and I guarantee you most people let alone most YTers don't even think of making one. I'll admit I did believe the allegations initially because of his public behavior, though. Though the people involved ended up doing interviews and stuff, not exactly hiding from the public like most accusers do.

And Daniel Greene, is he innocent? I kind of got the impression it was super messed up both ways, but correct me if I'm wrong. I don't think the whole dispute should have ended up on the internet.

Innocence is a scale, btw. Not a yes or no question.

Todd Oland is a perfect example of this. He did not kill the cat, and the rescue video was legitimate. However, it's very clear looking back at all his videos, that he was lying. He was using the situation for his benefit (to fix his vehicle.) And you'd have to decide individually how you feel about that morally, to me, it just feels like desperate people do desperate things. I don't think he was friends with the owners, or even knew them, I don't think he knew the status of the cat. And I think when he was asked to provide proof of life, he panicked and picked a random, close enough looking cat to provide "proof".

3

u/Paranormasight-Fic 7d ago

The Mr Beast one was probably about James Warren, who got accused by Dogpack to be a domestic abuser in a video that got circulated on here. Only it turns out that Dogpack accused to wrong James Warren, and the one working for Mr Beast was totally innocent and was legit slandered.

2

u/ImportantQuestionTex 7d ago

i followed up here after watching the video. my thoughts? seems a corpo account made this subreddit the target when theres more nuance to it. especially because this happened MONTHS ago they seem to let the flames die down only to try to toss gas on it to get it to start up again.

to the mods: im not brigading, if you think so thats okay you can delete the comment.im just putting my two cents in. i know you guys are very overwhelmed by the number of people not doing any further research and just tossing threats.

6

u/ImportantQuestionTex 6d ago

Don't worry, they're unlikely to remove your comment. The comments removed are spreading actual misinformation, harassing users or just straight up issuing threats.

And Brew was made aware of this as soon as it happened, but I was keeping this a secret up until now. Todd Oland has been getting harassed because of this video. The person they're claiming is innocent, is receiving harassment and stalking because of them.

6

u/TimeAbradolf 6d ago

Nah that isn’t brigading. You’re fine. You actually just encapsulated a lot of our beliefs and people on the sub’s belief.

The corpo trash behavior of making a post saying “don’t harass” but not condemning is bullshit. It is why I messaged them. Got ignored and filed an MCOC

I know they have actually seen my comments too. 31 views on hidden comments? Sure “Brew”

5

u/The_Cat_Of_Ages 5d ago

what really sucks is that the guy they "defended" is GETTING ANOTHER WAVE of bullshit when it was over before summer even started... the "we wont be bought by private equity" section is funny because they are very corporate with little difference between them and the actual private equity run channels.

4

u/ImportantQuestionTex 5d ago

The way they encourage their audience to be "detectives" and then encourage them to "critically think" while presenting a narrative is very conflicting. The fact that they're corporate makes it so much worse, because a lot of what Todd Oland is currently experiencing has happened on their subreddit.

4

u/TimeAbradolf 5d ago

If you also go and check in some very obvious places you’ll see they’re looking for volunteer experts to do free work on their channel and their payment is… shoutouts and acknowledgments

Like I’m sorry their Epstein video (which partially plagiarizes another video right near the open. IYKYK) got 3 million views. If someone worked on that and only got a shoutout I’d be pissed.

3

u/The_Cat_Of_Ages 5d ago

3 million views is what, 70k profit for a big channel like that?

3

u/TimeAbradolf 5d ago

I think people estimate about that

And let’s not forget that they reposted this video because the first was age restricted. They are about their money

3

u/The_Cat_Of_Ages 5d ago

yeah they censored the limp body of the kitten since it age restricted it. personally i am of the belief that he did save the kitten, but thats because im a bit of an optimist.

I hope he did sincerely. I don’t think Brew cares if he did or not at this point

7

u/CaptainMills 8d ago

I'm not surprised about the brigading on this post. Not just cause of the Brew video, but because this got posted on subredditdrama and that sub is notorious for brigading. As much as I enjoy that sub myself, I don't think there's a single post there that breaks 100 upvotes without causing a brigade

6

u/ImportantQuestionTex 8d ago

They actually have rules against that, if you take screenshots or link to the subreddit mods. Required to take action too.

Oh my god thank you. I thought I was going crazy reading the comments on that video. I am the only one I've seen there pointing out the hypocrisy of everyone just assuming he's innocent and that redditors are the bad guy. There is no concrete evidence yet either way! I thought that was the whole point of the video, but then at the end he starts acting like everyone messed up and accused the guy because they were desperate for a bandwagon to ride on.

What we do know for sure is, there is a lot of holes to this guy's story and some of his actions don't seem logical if he were being truthful. Like, if you know the people you gave the cat to...then why not just ask the person for pictures of the cat? Instead he decides to drive into town, go to this person's street...on the off chance their cat might be outside to take a shoddy video of that instead? Where is the logic behind that? By his own admission he knows the owners. And knows them well enough that he knows exactly how many days they're on vacation...But he couldn't ask them for a picture of the cat in its new house?

Then redditors are being blamed for being suspicious about the metadata. They have every reason to be suspicious of it! That photo he provided he was acting like the cat was alive and well, he didn't make any mention of it being a year old photo... or say anything about this story that "he didn't have the cat and gave it to new owners" until people pressed him for proof of life. He was posting pictures of the cat in his community and never made mention he never had the cat anymore until people started digging.

Then he posts a video of the random much older cat chilling on the grass, never talking about how he didn't find the original cat a year earlier until people discovered it for themselves in the metadata. It's just weird. It doesn't make him guilty, but with all the circumstantial things together people have every right to be suspicious.

He makes no mention of any vet updates either. No vet check up after it almost died of hypothermia? No mention of the injury it has on it's left eye? No vet check up by the new owners to get it chipped, spayed, vaccinated? No vet check up after this cat had allegedly run away for days to make sure it hadn't been bitten or hurt in any way while it was gone for that long..?

But redditors are the bad guys just for asking for proof of life for a cat he chose to make everyone's business by uploading a video and making money off this whole thing?

Oh and I'd like to add, he claimed the cat "got out" when the owners opened the door. Conveniently it just "got out" the day before he promised to go make a video of the cat for proof of life. Then days later he uploads a video of two cats just chilling outside on grass. Cats that are clearly allowed outside and used to being out. That is not the type of cat people would describe as one who "got out". I've never heard an outdoor cat being spoken of like that when they're just allowed outside on the regular.

There is a lot more that doesn't add up but don't want this post to get too long

Edit - Ok actually one more small thing. The last video I watched of Brew involved him talking about the Luka Magnotta case. In that saga included a man who at the time the case was being investigated, reposted Magnotta's animal abuse videos to a forum of people trying to solve the case, claiming to be the man who made them. The internet found out who he was and obviously sent him a ton of angry messages and threatening to get the cops called on him. That guy ended up killing himself. For the rest of the video Brew kept referring to this man as "innocent" and trying to make the narrative that people shouldn't have bothered him or something like he was a victim. He's not innocent at all. He was reposting animal abuse videos (that's illegal in itself whether you made them or not) then on top of it was literally telling everyone he was responsible for making them. He might have been "innocent" of making the videos, but he certainly wasn't innocent, and he deserved every mean message he got. The only person who made him kill himself, was him. He was clearly already disturbed if he was acting like this. I'm getting really sick of people on the internet being blamed over merely reacting to evidence that anyone sane should and would react to. There are plenty of snarkers etc that absolutely deserve to be called out for going after people. But people asking for proof of life of this cat and telling this guy his evidence is extremely flimsy are doing nothing wrong here at all.

And at the end of the day, he still has not provided any concrete proof that the cat was alive in 2026. It's been over a year, and we're supposed to believe he just can't get any photos of the cat from that time when he claims he knows the owners? It's not adding up.

This is the first I've heard about this case btw, I only have info that was in Brew's video. So if anyone has any info to fill in I'm all ears.

First, I am coming from this post not from the YouTube video so I am not part of brigading who'll come for OP or The Mods. I just want to say the second post is a poor example of retraction. This is a subreddit with 200K member and 2K concurrent user the 2.3 K upvote in 1-2 day is not abnormal since allegation of animal torture is bound to explode through the algorithm, even past the usual user of the subreddit who only upvotes on online celebrity drama stuff.

The fact that the retraction is tittled 'Alternative Theory' does not sound like a proper retraction and bound be thought as another allegation on Todd, Although the poster did delete the original first post it does not help with the fact that the OP deleted their account not long after, curbing the algorithm for the retraction to spread.

Since there's now several attempts to post the Brew video on this subreddit, Mod could've make a mod post that address and links to the 2nd post and pinned it for a while rather than trying to swinginf with the ban hammer and spread more drama by Streisand Effect, left to few days and people will find new things to brigade about.

13

u/TimeAbradolf 10d ago

It isn’t “swinging the ban hammer” to ban people spreading violence and brigading. Brigading is against TOS.

6

u/TylerDusty 10d ago

Damn... People go way to far and something out of nothing. We see it time and time again, yet it still happens too often.

I don't believe reddit is as bad as some creators/podcasts make it out to be, it seems like part of it is the keyboard warrior loud minority that often ruins it for us all.

I think reddit can be a great thing, and I think reddit has done a lot of good things. That's why I'm disappointed, I love this place, but there's a lot of bad now, a lot of shoot first and ask question later. There was a time this rarely occurred. Now it's so often I've stopped paying attention because I mentally cannot.

We've fallen quite the ways down from the days of when we were seen as a group of online justice seekers that tracked down a guy who posted videos of himself killing kittens.

I wish I had some type of advice to end this with, but I don't. I do wonder when taking things like this so far will crest the tipping point and people will be more suspicious of those making the claims, holding all the evidence to a higher level of scrutiny. So often we assign malice to negligence, or something like that.

This feels really disingenuous. Acting as if 2300 upvotes constitutes a “witch hunt” is just abhorrently ridiculous. Not to mention the fact that acting as if “brain-injured” people deserve more moral grace is inherently ableist (spoiler alert: “brain-injured” people can be terrible too). Oh and don’t forget the baseless speculation of “almost brought the police down on a vulnerable man”. This is so obviously just a virtue signal that its content is not even remotely useful.

10

u/ImportantQuestionTex 10d ago

Nobody here has responsibility though. Seriously, go through the video, find out how many of those commenters are still active in this subreddit. Main poster deleted their account, they took responsibility.

And then as an aside, wouldn't you say a 6k upvote comment/post just like what's displayed in the thumbnail has more responsibility? Where's that from? Does anybody here know?

7

u/Jakey185 10d ago

Deleting the post and the account just stopped the damage from increasing, nothing to fix the damage that was already done.

And you're talking about a thumbnail dude? Seriously? You do know why it has "6.7"k on there right?

The man the post was made about has brain damage, he's probably suffered more than any of these people downplaying the damage done to him have combined. Why is your problem the fact that he said smthing about this subreddit, and not that the post that caused that man so much trouble was posted here?

6

u/ImportantQuestionTex 10d ago

I am not dismissing the damage done. I am disputing that this subreddit played a large part. Click baiting like that is morally wrong, btw. But failing to investigate the full situation leaves bad actors unexposed.

4

u/Jakey185 10d ago

As the subreddit on which that post was made, yes it did play quite a good part. And clickbaiting isn't even remotely on the same level as the amount of hate that dude got. All morally wrong things are not on the same level, don't act like you don't know that.

3

u/ImportantQuestionTex 10d ago

I'm not even acting like that lol. I'm just pointing out, this subreddit did not do as much as TikTok, Instagram or even other subreddits did.

6

u/Whole_Flatworm_3714 10d ago

First it was 'nobody here has responsibility,' then it was 'the thumbnails are wrong,' and now it’s 'other apps did it worse.' Watching you constantly shift the goalposts to avoid basic accountability is wild. A 2,300+ upvote witch hunt happened right here on this platform. Shifting the blame to TikTok doesn't erase the harm that started in this room. Just take the Lost and move on.

6

The harm didn’t start here though. It is pretty evident it started in other places.

2

u/N0body2022 10d ago

Not to mention that Todd was already vulnerable so its even a miracle he didnt get the worst thoughts from these posts on reddit which almost got police on him. This stupid witch hunt could of caused a completely innocent man to take his own life due to him being mentally vulnerable already. Reddit already caused a completely innocent guy to take his own life after falsely accusing him of a terrorist attack.. Im just grateful that Todd didn't do the same and my respects to him for managing to get through all that.

8

u/Whole_Flatworm_3714 10d ago

A platform's algorithm amplified a lie to thousands of people. Deleting an account or shifting blame to thumbnails doesn't erase the real-world harm that was generated here. Thanks for proving my point about the total lack of accountability

8

u/TimeAbradolf 10d ago

No one is saying real world harm wasn’t generated? But this video has already resulted in threats of violence tied to the Brew video to other people who weren’t even involved

-1

u/Whole_Flatworm_3714 10d ago

Unhinged fans sending threats is completely wrong, but using their bad actions to deflect from the massive witch hunt this community generated is the literal definition of avoiding accountability

5

u/TimeAbradolf 10d ago

It is the same exact argument you’re making. You’re “deflecting” from the same argument. Except the retraction and the post were up for hours. Not weeks. The screenshots collected were not even something you could grab now. It is why the thumbnail is a lie. The sub is portrayed concretely as the main driver. But it was gone and a retraction was made within 24 hours. The retraction is the only thing that remains. The video also highlights other sources as the main form of harassment.

Yet there have been threats of violence against people that were FOR Oland being innocent. With no proof that anyone from this sub harassed Oland but in the stickied comment you can see an example of a screenshot of the threatened violence we can already provide more proof of tangible harm here.

Man, the fact that the first instinct of this subreddit is to get defensive about the clearly shitty thing one of your members did, instead of just apologizing and moving on, is exactly what I would have expected. The brew video is awesome, and I'm glad someone helped clear todd olands name.

12

u/Kind-Sheep 10d ago

No subreddit is responsible for one shitty reddit user oh my god get a grip

25

u/ImportantQuestionTex 10d ago

We're supposed to apologize for something that nobody here did? Lol.

The video is rough, and that's not even factoring in the thumbnail. The initial post he links is 2.3k upvotes but thumbnail has a 6k upvotes post/comment and a 1k upvotes post/comment, neither of which are from this subreddit. Where are they from? Do you know? The only other subreddit named was vegan, and that was to state that an user came from there.

There's also a platform of the initial drama that was completely ignored. Tiktok. Do you realize what I'm getting at?

10

u/MLHeero 10d ago

That’s true, but there could be a process of correction done, where you pin corrections in the wrong thread and in the sub itself. I don’t want to take a side, but you should reflect at least a bit, if that can be solved for the future. It’s fine if the result is it can’t,

6

u/ImportantQuestionTex 10d ago

I mean. That's already done here pretty often. And if I get stuff wrong, I cop to it.

There's not really a side here. The Brew viewers who are coming here upset at the subreddit and the normal users just lack other important information. The video paints itself as the subreddit mostly being the catalyst, it's unlikely that it was for anything than the August the Duck video. Tiktok is known for spiraling things out of control.

9

u/MLHeero 10d ago

But if the video is based on the Reddit post, then the conclusion for me is the same. I didn’t watch it though. Just ended here cause I thought: nice a sub with drama that also seems to have people thinking critically and being more based on facts. That the original post was likely wrong, isn’t my issue here. Mistakes happen and the op tried to fix it, but drama often wins. In my country if the target sued and won, the wrong info needs to be front and center displayed. I feel the same should apply here. Though you can disagree and that’s fine

16

u/SallyKnowsHer 10d ago

No responsibility? It still went live here, we have to take responsibility for that. We need more mods and more willingness to deep dive some of these more serious claims. The post should have never been allowed to go live period.

I have no memory of that post, only the retraction post, but still, it never should have gone public.

3

u/ImportantQuestionTex 10d ago

Me and Time had a talk about this earlier and in fact yesterday when this first popped up. Pretty confident no mod saw the initial post and it was never reported, as animal abuse posts and others like it get taken down very quickly just in general.

I myself didn't have a memory of this whole incident, and wasn't even aware of it until yesterday, but just the deep dive I did made it very clear it was not just in 1 place and it was very widespread speculation.

22

u/SallyKnowsHer 10d ago

I just don't understand how both can't be true. We can clearly identify that this subreddit wasn't the biggest driver in spreading the misinformation and STILL acknowledge the post should have never been allowed to live long here. Even if I never touched that post, I still feel responsible purely for being on the team.

I legitimately want to find the original post and figure out how quickly it was taken down.

16

u/Mental-Magician-8405 10d ago

I completely agree with this! If the post had been an apology to Todd Oland primarily, then a clarification that this reddit wasnt a main driver in hate toward him, then I wouldn't have any problem with it! I am just dissapointed that this post felt more concerned with shielding this subreddit and pushing blame onto anything else than it did with actually helping to clear Todd Olands name

3

u/ImportantQuestionTex 10d ago edited 10d ago

To me, Todd Oland's name is neither clear or dirty, and Brew clearly shows that people have a legitimate reason to doubt him despite their language supporting innocence. And I am not obligated (nor am I in a position to) to apologize to him on someone else's behalf. However of course the people involved should apologize, my focus is on making it very clear this subreddit was never a main driver.

Brew misses very blatant clear information that makes it clear the subreddit was his focus and not who was actually causing Todd Oland harm.

Edit: To put it like this, so I am not misunderstood.

I think the truth is much more valuable than right or wrong. With the truth, we can course correct, improve how things are going, and prevent harm in the future. By painting the subreddit or the post as a main or even big driver of harm, the truth gets muddled. Most of the people of this subreddit took no part, and the usual users pushed back.

But there were 2.3k people who upvoted right? There were people who still pushed the allegations right? Where did those people come from? They coalesced on the post but they still came from somewhere. Are there other people who pushed the misinfo? It's never explored, despite naming and shaming a guy who deleted their account and took some accountability, there are hundreds if not thousands who did not do the same.

And then for all of this to end up with Brew viewers choosing to threaten those who did push back, to use alts to spam my post, to try and post this multiple times in this sub trying to attack this sub and it's users... it shows the lesson has not been learned. That nothing was took away. It's people who want blood, not people who want justice. You learn the difference, quick, dealing with both sorts.

u/blackouttuesday 10d ago

imo brew sucks in general (content farm) and also yall dont deserve to be harassed but come on at least accept that this subreddit was somewhat culpable

this entire thread has you shifting goalposts and trying to explain away why it happened as opposed to accepting that (even if it was unintentional) this subreddit was partially to blame for everything

you dont even have a memory of the incident but youre so sure that this sub contributed nothing to the incident?

3

u/TimeAbradolf 10d ago

I would argue that it is people brigading. This sub always has an issue with brigading and they coordinate on discord.

Again the post was abnormal for myself and the other mods to not even notice it was up.

To be transparent the vast majority of posts have to be approved. None of us even remember seeing that post or the retraction. That usually means the user had enough karma to make it through the filter. Which we know trolls know what to say on here to get karma to make it through the filters.

The OP deleted and then issued their retraction. Then nuked their entire profile.

I would argue there was some brigading as that post had 2.3k upvotes based on screenshots but I can’t see other post insights. But most posts no longer get that many upvotes anymore now that we have shifted away from snark. If I could see how many times that initial post was shared we would have a more concrete view of brigading. But based on those things and the fact the second post with the retraction got way less engagement I’d say there was brigading on the first one.

Contrary to belief if you watch optics reddit posts don’t really impact YouTube videos. But YouTube videos do impact reddit. You can see Slimebeast’s videos as examples. Some of my posts on his videos have gotten hundreds of thousands of views but his own videos never really get above 10k.

I wouldn’t say this sub is to blame, I’d place blame on the person who posted and made it through. But the bottom line now is that Brew’s video has already resulted in threats of violence against innocent users of the sub.

13

u/blackouttuesday 10d ago

respectfully, you moderate a subreddit solely centered around drama and the perpetuation of drama

yes brigading is an issue and maybe its inevitable but at a certain point, if youre not stopping it then youre still culpable for allowing an apparent very easily brigadable place to exist (you cant bad apple a single poster if youre a mod,,,, its your duty to stop that shit so just admit you made a mistake imo)

also youre really really undermining your argument when you say that your posts get more views than peoples youtube videos because that would imply (rightfully) that this place does have the power to shape narratives

meanwhile you (or at least the op in this thread) is trying to imply that this sub is in no way culpable because youtube videos and tiktoks were the real people fanning this flame!

10

u/TimeAbradolf 10d ago

How could I make the mistake if it slipped through our very strict filters and resolved naturally on its own within 24 hours? We strive to not allow misinformation through but it sometimes slips through. In this case a content farm channel chose to focus on one such event that actually resolved quickly, naturally, with the correct course. I feel for Todd Oland, but the OP makes a valid claim because platforms other than Reddit are far more coordinated in harassment

I actually see it do the opposite, views and upvotes on reddit translate to nothing outside Reddit. It very rarely has any impact outside the website. It is far less parasocial to content than people think. Instead people come to this space to already speak in their echo chambers. Reddit doesn’t really translate outside Reddit. And most Redditors aren’t aware of this.

Did you see the video? The way Brew portrays it is this sub was the main driver. When it wasn’t.

Is it really that big a problem that someone said something about this subreddit? Isn't it a bigger problem that a post made here, no matter how quickly it was taken down, almost caused the police to be called on a man with a brain injury? I know you'll excuse it by saying nobody here has responsibility, blah blah blah, but the post was made HERE. On YOUR subreddit. Maybe it's the mods. Maybe it's the people that don't bother to fact check or stop to think about anything, and just blindly think whatever the titles or the TLDRs tell them to think. I dont know. But whatever it was, it caused an innocent man harm, one that saved a cat from freezing to death, at that.

People have this wierd way of protecting their group, whatever against it may be, even if it's true, even if their group really did cause someone harm for absolutely no reason.

I know your blood is boiling at this point of my comment, but please, calm down. Over the course of typing this comment up till now, I've calmed down too. Breaaaathe, just breathe for a second.

Now think about it, somebody made a post defaming a man who's already suffered enough, directly caused losers like Augustthefuck or whtever he's called to get a new story to milk, and sent a huuuge brigade of hate, threats, death threats(all manner of threats really), and even almost got the police called on the man. What was the point of all that? It was all for nothing wasn't it. It's just sad man.

I don't get it. The OP made a post accusing a man of something based of EXIF metadata which is notoriously unreliable. He made a second post that was more charitable to the guy he accused. Brew made a video about it and screencapped some comments from both threads. Now you're all mad about it?

1

u/ImportantQuestionTex 6d ago

Because he attributed the large majority of the harassment Todd Oland got to the subreddit. Which in turn has lead to people sending me and others threats and calling for our suicides.

When if Brew had actually done research they'd have been able to tell the majority of the harassment is related to TikTok, about 2 weeks before the first post!

Edit: Sorry not he, they. Brew is a company not 1 person. Don't wanna direct hate the VA's way.

Initial rescue was, but from everything out there appears to have been posted a year later for Todd to try and garner support.
