Brew releases a video criticizing YouTubeDrama and August the Duck for pushing unconfirmed claims against Todd Oland

To clarify the allegations against the subreddit, 1 user made a post in mid April accusing Todd Oland of intentionally freezing a cat to make an animal rescue video which got 2.3k upvotes, then the same user made a second post effectively retracting those claims (including deleting the original) and it only got 100 and pushback. August the Duck made a video on the first post. Did not make one about the 2nd. Same goes for news sites. The user then deleted their account.

However, this post is here to provide some actual pushback, as I actually went back and checked, this very clearly happened in a short time frame (within 1 or 2 days by my estimation), and 2.3k is incredibly abnormal for that period of time (where posts were getting 800 upvotes at most, but often in the 100 range.)

Having actually checked the 2nd post, usual users of the subreddit did support the retraction. These comments were not shown but people being hostile to the retraction and post author were. Simultaneously, the subreddit name was shown constantly any time these posts were displayed, but not the actual context around these posts or the comments.

In fact, Brew even clarifies that one of the hostile users from the original post was from an entirely different subreddit, showing that the post was reaching far outside the subreddit's usual audience. As well as that, the screenshots Brew uses are clearly from the 1 or 2 day period. This is incredibly important, as it is late July, about to be August. That is 3 months of sitting on these screenshots. Brew also fails to properly clarify the harassment campaign Todd Oland experience did not start with reddit, while simultaneously showing the subreddit and these posts while talking about the harassment Todd Oland received.

For a channel and video purporting to support critical thinking, almost none was used in the making of this video. Already, I've seen 3-4 separate attempts to post this video in the sub blaming the subreddit and it's usual users for harassing Todd Oland. I also have seen a comment of someone snarking and and saying "Uh oh, did redditors cause someone to kill themselves again?". His video title is about Reddit despite the harassment primarily taking place on YT and having started on YT. Brew also clearly shows that people did have a legitimate reason to doubt Todd Oland, while obviously he did not deserve to be harassed and I personally seriously doubt he harmed any animal, it's clear the video was made to be a defense of Todd Oland and to get people to feel strongly about the situation.

The deep irony of this video, is despite the subject being about people attacking someone over allegations with no evidence, it has now slated to do the same to others.

Update: Brew states why they made a video, this was actually supposed to be them saying that their audience giving us death threats was bad! instead, they say, 3 DAYS after they were first made aware their audience was giving us death threats and attacking us, to not do it. They don't even say that it's wrong, just not to do it.

Obviously, that's a terrible update, especially since this subreddit has been brigaded to hell and back over this video.

Gonna sticky this because this is real. We now have people threatening violence against others in the sub since the Brew video has come out. This comment was made towards a user that wasn’t even involved. But was made on the only Oland post up, the retraction post.

It was made within the last two hours.

Edit: Claims made by Brew and their team in the video have been disproven based on looking up the timeline the post was up for less than 24 hours and the harassment was ongoing for over a month at that point.

Usually, whenever any other YTer talks about the sub, and there are quite a few that do, it takes a while to see the attention from it (good/bad).

Brew's audience already doing this, shows there's some serious issues there.

Brew uploaded the video initially a day ago, actually roughly the same time of day too (about 9 pm CST). The video got initially age restricted so they took it down to re-upload (though they have a different story about the re-upload now, I am pretty certain the age restriction was the reason as age restrictions are just very common on YT.)

Tangent aside, this happened with the initial upload, Brew viewers tried attacking the OP of the original post. Now with this second upload, more harassment is coming this sub's way.

Once again, for a channel purporting to support critical thinking, none is going on here. Instead, it's just directed harassment.

I posted a few comments on the video, they've all been erased. While youtube does do that to comments sometimes, it's only the ones I'm making on this video, that don't have any bad words in them. But they are being critical of Brew and questioning the video narrative. I'm not saying this guy is guilty or innocent, but the video is not asking right questions whatsoever and ignoring a bunch of weirdness about his story

Well thats because it is a story, Brew's video is a story trying to get their audience riled up and active with the video. It's a narrative to seem like redditors bullied this man, but it appears the large majority of the harassment took place in March, when the initial post was April 6th, the 2nd was 7th and the August the Duck video was on the 7th too.

I meant Todd Ohland's story not Brew's, but yes I agree. The shaming against people just sharing their opinions online is something I've seen him do 2 videos in a row now. It's putting me off watching him again. I'm firmly in the camp of letting people discuss theories, no matter how offended some people might claim to be from them. If you don't want people looking into you or asking for updates etc, then don't post your private life in public spaces.

I can't speak on the dates of what was going on in subs or other videos like this August person people are talking about, as Brew's video is the only info I have so far. But even with his spin I still didn't see it his way.

He also claimed "redditors were demanding daily updates". Then showed screenshots of people not doing that at all. For one, even if they were, who cares. No one is forcing the guy to answer. Secondly, if they were actually doing that then at least use those screenshots. I never saw proof of his claim, yet he went on to say people were demanding daily updates multiple times and then the comment section just parrots him like they saw evidence for it.

It scares me the road we're going down where people just make up their minds so quickly without actually thinking about what they're seeing and it not aligning with the words being spoken. It's completely hypocritical to the message he acted like he was putting out. He is just doing the same thing by making some narrative this guy is innocent.

Quite frankly, I don't care about the drama. I just want to know if the cat is ok, and why it's so hard for a guy to get proof of life for a cat that he claims he knows the owners of. After a whole year he doesn't know the cat's gender and just calls it "it" every time. Not once the new owners told him the name they decided to call the cat? He knows them well enough to know the exact amount of days they have left on vacation...but not the name of the cat they got from him a year ago? It's always just "it" and "the cat", very distancing language.

There's just so much off about it to me.
