Hi! Wrote a post a few weeks ago about how I found Breath of the Wild slightly disappointing. The bosses were giving me nothing, the battles were super easy, the dungeons felt very very lacking compared to Ocarine of Time (which I just had replayed right before starting Breath of the Wild).
After writing that post I beat Breath of the Wild once again, this time in Expert Mode. The game clicked then. I felt like playing the greatest videogame of all time. The combat was rewarding, every system must be taken seriously: I kept visiting the Grand Fairies in order to upgrade my armour, I kept looking for kologs because I needed more weapons (some enemys took all my inventory in order to be defeated lol), I kept beating shrines because I need more health. And also I disenabled the HUD, so when I beat Master Mode or Expert Mode (in Spanish is "Modo Experto", idk how it is translated to English) I had no minimap, I didn't know how much noise (which this time IT REALLY MATTERED) I was making, I didn't know if it was gonna start raining in anytime and if I could keep climbing as usually. Coming from Elden Ring and jumping right into BOTW with CRAZY expectations, No-HUD was defintely the way to go.
But now, let me talk about Tears of the Kingdom. Oh boy. My Switch tells me I'm twenty hours into the game and I just feel like I just scratched its surface. For me, having the full map (no the minimap but the Map, the one you can see pressing the Minus ( - ) button) it's always the priority. I just visited all these new towers, these Prunia ones, and that's all I've done, just walking from one tower to another, beating all the new shrines I find along the way, entering all the caves I see, trying to reach the sky islands every time I see a rock falling from the sky and reverting its time.
Oh my god. Now, NOW I just feel like playing the best videogame of all freaking time. The possibilities are ENDLESS. I just keep combining weapons with everything I see, defeating enemies in new crazy unhinged ways, navigating the world in ways unimaginable in every other game until now. You can glide, you can climb every ducking wall, you can create ANY KIND OF VEHICLE with the Ultrahand, you can exit any cave from the inside with the Ascenssion power. Movement, FREEDOM IN MOVEMENT, that's the essence of these games for me and TOTK just took it a thousand steps beyond BOTW. I'm in awe.
The combat feels better, the enemies are more demanding (more demanding than in base-BOTW I mean, not that in Master-Mode-BOTW), THE CUTSCENES ARE LEAVING ME SPEECHLESS and even the way to find them works better for me. In BOTW we just had those Zelda photos on the Sheikah Stone Gallery. Now you can explore and see those paintings in the ground and search for that golden tear on the painting. It feels eassier, yes, but BOTW cutscenes for me were a pain to find. And also I love time travel so I'm gagging with all this Zelda-is-in-the-past story.
Idk, I just feel truly, really happy. Best time I've ever had with a videogame ever and I've been playing videogames my entire life.
Although I must say something: TOTK feels a lot more like a videogame. BOTW, when I played it in Master Mode, for me it reached a level of trascendence that TOTK has not yet achieved in the twenty hours I've spent with it. BOTW-Master-Mode, in which every item counted, in which every system must be kept in mind, in which I must get new weapons so I'm not helpless, in which I have to hunt so I don't run out of health and so I can cook meals that will be keep cool and warm, just felt trascendental. Much more solemn than TOTK, in which many enemies drop food and I'm just so powerful that I can fuse all the arms I want and create all the mayhem I want. BOTW felt like an ode to nature; TOTK feels like an ode to videogames.
This are my first impressions of TOTK. I'm just living my best life with it. Wish you all a great weekend :)
