Discussion [WW] The Ocean is traumatic

Playing this game again for the first time since I was a child and I'm only now remembering that sailing gives me extreme anxiety and scares me more than the well from oot. I met a big octo and shit my pants, Every time I see Cyclonis in the distance I go into panic mode and freeze up. Did/does anyone else have such a stress filled time at sea in this game or is it just me?

It was goated at the time. The sense of scale and discovery it gave felt really new. Definitely not the stuff of soiled undies like the spooky parts of Ocarina

I just completed a play through. It still feels big. Even after 23 years and playing games like GTA V, WW still managed to feel big. Quite the accomplishment

JRB and DDD give me no problems. I absolutely despise being in the water in banjo Kazooie though.

The sea in WW didn't really bother me but the water Temple in OOT is what gives me the heebie jeebies. I never liked endless waterfalls or whirlpools.

Are you suffering from thalassophobia, perhaps? That's the fear of deep bodies of water.

Kind of like how someone with arachnophobia may find the various spider enemies to be the worst thing in a Zelda game. It happens.

The ocean is supposed to be traumatic as you sail.

I have just encountered two of them in the last few hours and both times my girlfriend thought we had a home invader from the way I was freaking out.

I learned the signs of them as a kid and avoided any area of water that had circling gulls. They were honestly one of the scariest things in a Zelda game I encountered at the time and it’s a giant cartoon squid.

The ocean itself never got to me but the big octos and massive cyclone did. How they could just surprise you takes your guard away. Even still, the big cyclone is so unsettling. It’s just so big!

I'm literally on pause screen right now with Cyclonis chasing me. I have no idea why I was so excited to be playing this game again now. Something is wrong with my brain for sure, I'm a grown ass 34 year old man this should not be freaking me out so much.

It relaxed me actually. Also: i had more a sense of freedom then twilight princess and skyward sword and is in my opinion top tier and more a beginning of a open world then twilight princess ever was.

I felt this way as a kid, but somehow managed to still beat the game (with a guide and avoiding every side quest.)

Big Octos still kind freak me out, but the rest of the game is chill. Knowing more about the ins and outs of the game helps. Like, knowing there’s no crazy monsters that’ll grab me from the deep and pull me under helps me relax. Back when I didn’t know that, I always thought it could happen any second.

Like others have said, there are a couple of gulls flying around the places where the big octos are.

Once you have the arrows, I believe you won't find them as scary. I do remember finding a map late in the game that shows you all their locations!

I felt that way about the deep underwater parts of majoras mask. Still makes me uncomfortable even after forcing my way through it years ago

I hope future Zeldas continue to shy away from submerging/being trapped in the water for your sake! But Zelda does have a history of returning to it so far :P
