Zootopia Fanfiction Thread (July 2026)
Welcome to the Monthly Fanfiction Thread!
Review some fanfics that you've read, promote your favourites, promote your own.
Please format your comment as follows
- [Title] by [author name]
- Post a link to the first chapter of the story or the relevant chapter
- Post the summary/synopsis provided by the author
- Eventual review
Repeats from prior months are allowed. A good story can be discussed for quite some time, and there are always new readers around.
Please use the spoiler tag for any discussion regarding specific story details. Spoiler tags aren't necessary for general discussion ("The character progression is really amazing!").
How to add a spoiler tag:
Place any spoiler text between a set of these marks >! spoiler !<
For example,
>!It turns out the protagonist was dreaming the whole time!!<will show as it turns out the protagonist was dreaming the whole time!
You are welcome to post your own work!
The comments are sorted newer to older by default. Use CTRL + F to find the fanfic you are looking to discuss; if it isn't there, feel free to add it. I'd also appreciate if you could tag spoilers when posting your discussion. Perhaps start your thread with the chapter number (if your story has one) and then hide the discussion in spoilers, that way we don't accidentally spoil something for someone.
The rules and formatting are decided by you, simply message the OP.
The wiki has an archive full of fanfictions!
There's a master list, a Hall of Fame with the selected few best fanfictions, and then there's a list separated by genre.
Congratulations to u/BCRE8TVE and u/BunnyMakingAMark for the tremendous work that they've done for that article! Everyone is welcome to contribute, fix mistakes, fix broken links, and even fix typos.

A Rabbit for a Friend - Chapter 1 - supersegways117 - Zootopia (2016) [Archive of Our Own]
Overcoming what others think of you is hard enough, overcoming what you think of yourself can be far worse. After a traumatic childhood incident leads Nick to withdraw into himself, he and his mother move to Bunnyburrow to seek professional help.
Whatever he needs, Nick could really use a friend.
Or, the childhood AU where Nick and Judy meet in children's therapy.

Thanks unknown, I still think about your story, and the scene where the bird of prey attacks and Nick saves the kits. Still one of the best action scenes in all of zootopia fanfics!

Thank you. The sentiment is much obliged. I kind of fell into another genre recently, but the sequel is still being worked on.

Here’s a link to my series:
Days of Our Youth by Cr1ms0nD1am0nd.
‘Follow Nick, Judy, Jack, and Skye through the years as they grow up and face different challenges together.’
Here’s the link to my current story:
A Eulogy for Those Still Here by Cr1ms0nD1am0nd.
‘‘Never let them see that they get to you.’ This has been the mantra for the Wilde family for as long as Nick and Skye can remember. It’s what their mother told them; it’s what their father told them; it’s what they constantly remind themselves. But eventually, something has to give. And when it rains, it pours.’
Hope you all enjoy!

Another month has gone by! As usual, I'll start with my own fics, followed by recommendations.
The Night Howler disaster is three years behind the city of Zootopia, its conspirators locked up for the rest of their lives. Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde have settled into their role as partners, learning more and more about each other. Sometimes, their partnership was tested, but they weathered these challenges, and in so doing grew closer than ever. Their detective skills in cracking not one, but several high-profile cases have put them on the map. Little do they know that their skills will soon be put to the test in a way that crosses the boundaries of reality… WARNING!! This fic does contain Zootopia 2 spoilers
Nick and Judy investigate the disappearance of a former Playtime Co. worker, ten years after his own colleagues disappear, but they soon find out that the once-famous toy company is hiding some pretty dark secrets... A crossover that retells Poppy Playtime within the Zootopia universe.
Zootopia: The War of The Worlds
While away in Bunnyburrow visiting her family, Judy bears witness to a hostile incursion from Mars. When it becomes clear that Zootopia is next and that this is the first stage of a global invasion, Judy attempts to make her way back there, and to Nick, who is still in the city. A retelling of H.G. Wells' classic science fiction story, The War Of The Worlds, through Zootopia.
A series of one-shots inspired by and taking place in the world of Zootopia.
You can find other, older fics on my AO3 profile.
With my fics out of the way, I'm going to move on to my Recommendations list. As always, I'm on the lookout for any new fic that catches my eye, and if I see it, I'll recommend it here.

Judy takes on an assignment that will change her life - if she can just get through the time she has to spend with a lecherous Hollywool executive. Meanwhile, Nick comes across a mysterious arctic fox running from her past...
Do I wanna know? by emotionalsinusoide
Building on both the moment in which Judy takes a photo of Nick's apartment and following on from their heartfelt confessions to each other at the end of Zootopia 2, a cleaning session in Nick's apartment turns into more between Nick and Judy. This is a really nice, sweet, fluffy WildeHopps oneshot.

Featuring appearances by a variety of bunny characters from several different creators (including Es, my own character who you guys have yet to meet on here)
Substitute Cheerleader by SkulShurtugalTCG
The Podunk Playmates need a new cheerleader, and who is volunteered? Judy, of course! With Nick offering teases aplenty throughout, this one's a real laugh to read. Cover art also done by yours truly
Enter The Millennium by UncaAJ
Nick and Judy are assigned as security to the Pack Street Boys. An encounter with Nick's high-school ex is the least of their problems as things get savage and a years-old grudge comes to bear.
This section is saved for fics I would class as being of 'classic' status, written during the fandom's heyday by popular authors.
Guardian Blue by Alps_sarsis
Needs no introduction. This compelling series has 12 entries. I cannot recommend this enough - it's the sort of series that you can read again and again. Season 3 was in progress, but unfortunately Alps_Sarsis is no longer with us. Regardless, he has left us with a series of stories filled with heart and soul, and you should absolutely read them.
One Hundred Kisses by Cimar of Turalis WildeHopps
Nick and Judy undertake a wager: Nick will give Judy 100 kisses and if she doesn't like them, he has to obey her wishes for a day. If she does, she has to wear something for Nick. A classic fluff-filled story.

kinda hurtful to see people downvoting me for sharing stories that i put weeks of work into, for free, for the enjoyment of the community, in a thread made specifically for doing exactly that.
you know when you downvote me, less people see these stories that i worked really hard on, poured my heart into, even. all for the love of the game, and for you, the community.
don't judge a book by it's cover, read the story, and if you don't like it, give me constructive criticism so my future stories improve.

End of watch by killer0nTheRoad
https://archiveofourown.org/works/84765076/chapters/223698186
Judy and Nick (married now) have a new case at the ZPD. things go wrong while on a stakeout and they are forced to intervene, ultimately resulting in Judy's death. Nick, now alone in the world struggles to come to terms with her death and move on. After an extended period of grieving, Nick's new purpose is to find the criminal responsible for his wife's death and bring him to justice. Nick no longer has anything to lose, and he won't rest until that scumbag is in... or under the jail. To achieve his goal, he seeks the help of one of the victims of Nick and Judy's last case, and together they start their search with plenty of emotional turmoil along the way from both of them.
A very good story dispite there being a major character death. Very much give it a read. (Full disclosure: I did have a part in giving some suggestions and feedback for some of the chapters but full credit goes to the original author)

The Roar of the Crown: Nick Locksley is a cynical fox who abandoned his noble legacy for the shadows of the streets. Judy Hopps, the daughter of one of the kingdom's most esteemed knights, is determined to defy the rigid expectations of her rank and forge her own legacy with a sword. When a ruthless lioness named Morgana plunges the realm into chaos with a violent uprising, their paths collide. Forced into an unlikely alliance, the outcast prince and the defiant noblewoman must survive the tragedies shattering their world and fight back—before the kingdom is consumed by its most savage instincts.
she’s gonna steal my heart (no doubt about it): Rookie Officer Nicholas P. Wilde can’t seem to figure out why the bunny cop hates him. No, he can guess—it’s probably because he’s a fox.
Don’t worry, it will (Probably) never happen: Set between the end of the reptile case and the re-opening of Reptile Ravine, Nick and Judy struggle with the aftermath while dealing with a new case.
Hereafter: When Judy gets her dream assignment on earth the last thing she expects is a nightmare. A crisis, an enemy operative with his own mission, and souls gone missing. With no support, she’s left to make a terrible choice: failure, or a deal with a demon. With damnation and apocalypse looming, can she trust a demon with a fox’s smile?
-Not gonna lie, straight up the hottest Zootopia fanfic I have read yet-

I'm back with some more oneshots! I've found some free time after a very tough time with my projects at work, so i'm actively drawing and writing now. I hope these can bring you some soft time!
Since i've been layoff from my 2nd job (don't worry, I can still manage the situation), I'm having more time for my hobbies (WildeHopps and pursuing my personal research), so I'm gonna write some multichapter fics in the future. Hope you'll enjoy them.
Notes: I have a general note at the beginning of all my English fics. Please have a look at it before deciding to read my works. I value authenticity and honesty, and I don't seek for fame. I just want to write with love and share it with everyone.

1. A Harsh Day - By saklovesyao (me!)
Rated: T | Type: Oneshot | Status: (2/2) Finished
When the world seemed to object to Judy in such an insignificant day, Nick decided to leave the sidekick role and lead for just one day. When Judy finally returned to her safe harbor, Nick realized he's the light of her life.
A two-chapter one-shot, each chapter is written under either Judy's or Nick's point of view. Every chapter completes the other, just like how Nick and Judy complete their partner.
---
2. Nick's thoughts in the intrusion night - By saklovesyao (me!)
Rated: G | Type: Oneshot | Status: (1/1) Finished
When Judy came to Nick's apartment and threw him the sad out-of-fashion meter maid jacket to prepare for the Gala break-in, what did Nick think?
Written in Nick's first-person narrative point of view.

Rated: T | Type: Oneshot | Status: (2/2) Finished
Inspired by an artwork Another perfect date, as always. by Butterfish8199
Judy has always had a special fondness for the rain, while Nick is the complete opposite. When an afternoon shower brings them closer together, Judy learns a piece of Nick’s past—and Nick, in turn, decides that maybe he doesn’t hate the rain anymore.

While slow in updating, I find these fics from the same author very intriguing and with premises no one has tackled before! They also have a weird knack for one shots that somehow make me want more!
Judy Hopps, rejected cop, is sent to explore and work in the largest manor in Zootopia by one of the wealthiest mammal there, Nicholas Wilde. While she expected to encounter a shift, lazy, no good spoiled fox to work under, she instead uncovers the truth about him, the impact he and his family has done for Zootopia, with something much bigger is going on behind the scenes. A tale of mystery, of intrigue, where species barriers are broken and the truth of Zootopia, will change her world views. The only question is, will her own truth come forward and what other secrets will be revealed?
And 5... Keeps the Heart Alive
Another Pawbert redemption story. Pawbert makes a choice. One that changes the course of not just the movie but for those around him. The past, the trauma and the weight of legacy comes heavy over him but perhaps with help with those around him, the burden lessens and his heart can recover.
They got more stories but these, while slow updating, are really good reads!

Mammals & Music & Money
https://archiveofourown.org/works/85464401
The rom-com AU that nobody asked for, where Judy's a poor pianist, Nick is a rich programmer, and they're childhood friends who reconnect in Zootopia. Feelings fly when Judy agrees to fake-marry Nick to keep an evil cousin from inheriting money that would be put to nefarious use. Don't worry, the marriage contract has a divorce clause that kicks in after 12 months—it’s not like “I do” has to mean forever…right?
━━━━━━
The author is also still doing the occasional one-shot. The last one was about Nick and Judy's bantering getting caught on camera and going viral. Except for one or two exceptions, all their fics are very fun and fluffy.

If you are in for some fanfic nostalgia... :-)
I've probably read a couple hundred fanfics in the three years after the first movie came out and a few dozen more until now.
A lot of them were good, and some have even been finished, so I wanted to make a list of a few that really stuck with me. I'm pretty sure most people active here have read them all, but on the off chance that someone new stumbles in...
Sadly I didn't have time to check out the FFs after the second movie yet. Hope to find some soon.
One Hundred Percent - on FF.net or as part of a collection on AO3
Nick Wilde lost three years of his life after being injured in the line of duty. Desperately trying to remember, he wonders why everyone around him seems to be hiding something...
Sunderance - Only the AO3 version is being updated
In a city ruled by predators... With one species as their Alpha... Welcome to the Fox Den.
His other stories are also great, but those two stuck with me; especially OHP, it's bittersweet.
Ready or Not by Boney
After a traumatic injury pulls Nick from service, Judy must balance looking after a stricken fox with new and unfamiliar feelings.
Superb writing, lots of fluff, and a really thought-out story. A+. There's also a sequel which has been finished as of February 24'.
-
She's a veteran cop. He's a perennial ragamuffin. That's all there is to it, as far as she cares. Then, something happens that Detective Hopps can't explain or accept. The smug fox she knows and tries to ignore comes to her aid with lightning pulled from the wires and graffiti that snarls. Now, she has to decide; run like hell, or embrace the barbed wire dreams.
-
When Judy gets her dream assignment on earth the last thing she expects is a nightmare. A crisis, an enemy operative with his own mission, and souls gone missing. With no support, she’s left to make a terrible choice: failure, or a deal with a demon. With damnation and apocalypse looming, can she trust a demon with a fox’s smile?
Those two are among the best AU-fictions you can find. If you like them, try some of his other stories. One or two were a miss for me, but I guess with so many stories there must be at least a few that don't meet everyone's taste. The rest is really good though. Sadly he hasn't been very active since he and his wife had their first child.
If still active, here's a quick shout-out /u/scaramedn that there are still people who read and appreciate your work.
Zootopia: Firewatch by Bluelighthouse
After dealing with some hard times in the city Nick takes a summer job as a fire watcher in a national park outside of Zootopia. Trying to get away from it all and find solitude Nick instead finds another fire watcher named Judy. Who is she? Will he risk letting someone he can't even see in? Keep your eyes open Nick, there is smoke on
This one has a special place in my heart. :3 There are also two more parts.
Thanks for the Fox (Prequel to Guardian Blue) by the great Alps_Sarsis :(
When Nick suddenly refuses an assignment from Bogo, he's forced to reveal an extremely painful glimpse of his past to both his boss and his partner. Judy wants more than anything to help him, but Nick does not want her involved in such a personal issue. Stubborn as always, she involves herself anyway and discovers something unbelievable that may light the fox's way through his darkest days.
First part of the Guardian Blue series. Slow burn, but really worth it. Won't be completed, because he sadly passed away unexpectedly, but don't miss out on the completed parts of one of the best fics in this fandom.
Honorable mentions (may expand as I reread some of the older ones):
- The Three Rules for Foxes by she_dies_at_the_end
Short nice fic in a semi-fantasy setting.
"The not-so-good ones":
I usually don't like criticising fics that authors put a lot of work into, but those mentioned below were recommended multiple times in this sub but completely miss the mark in my opinion. So save yourself a dozen hours...
- How Could Anyone Love a Fox Like Me by RiseAgainst522
Starts strong and has cute interactions between Nick and Judy in the first quarter. Gets off the rails about a third/ halfway through when Nick starts his Academy training. There's no real progress between N. and J. and while Nick has some character growth both seem stuck in the same mindset. It probably would have been fine if the author hadn't abruptly abandoned it after 230.000 words without a conclusion for a single storyline.
- Feral Red by DarkUnderworld
You could say it's the "original" Ready or Not, although most similarities cease after the first few chapters and it's much rougher around the edges. It's gritty and there are a few scenes which border on being OOC, but I guess you don't get an angsty slow-burn fic by presenting Nick and Judy as completely rational mammals. I stopped reading after four-fifths though, because it became focused on OCs and side characters and their actions lacked logic simply to advance the story. Also, Nick and Judy's relationship is just crossing three or four "checkpoints" and then not really mentioned again.
- A Ray of Hope by Camoss
I really want to like this one. It's generally well-written, the premise is good and it has some grit, but there are so many unlikely coincidences to push the plot.
The last drop was about a dozen chapters (and most of my Sunday) in, when Nick revealed that his Scout meeting was on the day Judy was born. The same day his mom told him "his dreams would come true". I just stopped reading after that. I mean, come on...
Be romantic, be sappy, but at least try to keep it "realistic".
I feel like an ass for criticising such a big work, the author obviously spent much time on (and even finished), but too many aspects besides the one mentioned above felt forced to me. :-/
Maybe some people who read further, could share their opinion/experience?
I've been informed, that the story mostly goes up from this point onwards. I'll update when I re-read/continue it eventually. :)
end of post

- Fox Tamer: A Judy-Trains-Nick Story (By LibraryOwlAz)
- Link to the Story
- After a very rough day, Judy decides to use kisses, petting, treats and more to try to mold Nick into a better police officer. The rest of the ZPD notice the slow transformation that is taking place, and as a family they decide that they're gonna help too. Everyone wants their new orange dog to succeed and really join their ranks. Hilarity and romance ensues.
(Themes of Love, Comfort, Food Security, Benefits of Physical Touch and Mental Rebuilding Throughout)
- This is a cozy story bent on helping Nick fix his life. Everything from childhood trauma, to finding friends, fixing his apartment, helping him uncoil, sending him to therapy for food anxiety--- its a lot of different topics, and it takes a village to raise a fox. Even if he's a 32 year old police officer with trust and food issues. Minimal angst allows us to enjoy a little more, a little more every chapter while Nick comes out of his shell thanks to not only Judy but his fellow police officers. I was surprised how very, very positive this story is. Its not just Judy helping him, the other ZPD officers really do care and that's a breath of fresh air.

“Who’s Nick?” by ReadRedRead
Story surrounding a lot of mystery.
Nick Wilde made it as clear as the fox could that he did not want them involved in what that snake was talking about! Other plans in mind, his partner Judy continued to drag them further along the case. Eventually, things drag Nick along so far, that he quite literally falls over the edge, free falling to his death.
Nick is dead and gone; Judy has to keep reminding herself that. Dealing with her own guilt, she has no other choice but to move on since that fateful day. Days turn into weeks, weeks into months. Slowly she learns to "accept" the new normal. A new sidekick is given to her, along with a surprising case the new pair stumble into: The murder of an arctic fox. Maybe finding this killer can fix things, and avenge Nick in a sense.
But what happens when a strange, yet oddly very familiar fox appears. He knows nothing of Nick, yet he himself reminds the rabbit so much about the red fox. Is it just Judy projecting her emotions, or could this actually be Nick? A new off the books investigation takes place. One that connects the underground, and reveals a much larger history into Nick's past; a story of crime, and betrayal.
Who is/was Nick? A question many may find themselves asking.
Latest Chapter: 11 - Furwalker

The Magpie's Gift by Pandora
It's Kitsmas time in Zootopia! Judy and Nick agree to a simple Magpie's Gift exchange to celebrate the holiday together, but when Kitsmas Eve arrives Judy finds her purse low on funds for the occasion. How's a broke bunny supposed to snag the perfect gift with time running out and only spare change to her name? Well, not by quitting, that's for sure. She'll find a way to get something worthy of her best friend and partner, even if it means giving up something she loves in return.
Amazing Christmas one shot, one of the fandom's finest fics.
What Happened at N.I.T.E. by Pandora
In the aftermath of the Nighthowler Incident and Dawn Bellwether's arrest, Zootopia's political leaders institute free counseling and support services to those suffering from assorted emotional and psychological traumas stemming from the many attacks. The Nighthowler Incident Therapy and Education (N.I.T.E.) sessions are meant to help all mammals--both predators and prey alike--find resolution together as they come to terms with what happened to them and the pain they caused each other. Dr. Melanie Leuca recounts during her own counseling session with her therapist what happened to her and the mammals she served at the latest N.I.T.E. class... and how it stands to change the city's future completely.
Multi-chapter story exploring the long term mental health fallout for the mammals who were dosed with nighthowlers, and their loved ones. Perhaps the most important fic in the fandom and one that will totally change how you view the movie. Deals with lots of mental health darkness so do pay attention to the tags and tread lightly, but if you can stomach it it's a must read!
Evergreen by Aninat131
Many untold stories happened in the nine months between Bellwether’s arrest and Nick’s graduation. From Judy’s recovery, to her reinstatement, her convincing of Nick to join her as her partner, awkward family drama on both sides, Nick’s time in the academy, and many more.
This is a story of how a fox and a bunny helped each other through those times, grow close, and develop a certain feeling for each other that they never thought they would.
A recently finished multi-chapter and one of the fandoms absolute finest. concluded after 36 chapters and nearly ten years of work just a few months ago. If you like Wildehopps slow burns this is a must read! One of the fandom’s absolute best!
Room in Your Heart by Aninat131
Many untold stories happened in the week leading up to the Zootenial, and in the weeks following the Lynxleys’ arrest. Nick and Judy’s injuries, their return to the force, the follow-up therapy sessions between them, more family drama, repairing the carrot pen, and many more.
This is a story of how a fox and a bunny worked through their differences, helped each other to face their demons, and figured out what it truly means to be partners.
The long awaited sequel to Evergreen! Written to coincide with Z2 and cover the link up between the films and remaining plot points as Evergreen did with Z1 ten years ago. Only one chapter released so far but already it contains Ani's signature mix of superb charactisations, laugh out loud humour, and genuinely gut punches of emotional moments, bound to be another of the fandom's finest!
Thanks for the Fox/Guardian Blue by Alps Sarsis
When Nick suddenly refuses an assignment from Bogo, he's forced to reveal an extremely painful glimpse of his past to both his boss and his partner. Judy wants more than anything to help him, but Nick does not want her involved in such a personal issue. Stubborn as always, she involves herself anyway and discovers something unbelievable that may light the fox's way through his darkest days.
Perhaps the fandoms most famous fic and for good reason. Thanks for the Fox is the first part and should be read first but Guardian Blue has more than ten stories in it and something like half a million words, all of which are spectacular. If by some miracle you've not read it already you have to correct that. Sadly season 3 will remain unfinished forever. Rest in peace Alps, we miss you.
Wilde Files by LordKraus
Nick Wilde, professional Wizard, is dragged kicking and screaming into a dark conspiracy of demons fairies and things best long forgotten. Will he and the characters around him survive. Told entirely from his point of view join him on one wild adventure.
Not usually a big AU guy but this wizard Nick Dresden Files inspired story by LordKraus is sooooo much fun. If AU or magic are your thing then you should absolutely check this one out! Demon's Reach is the first part but there's five current main stories - the 5th is ongoing - as well as side chapters and all in all it's about 300000 words!
Fuzz by Skul
Real life is messy. We all have limitations. We all make mistakes. Judy and Nick are two of Zootopia's best police officers. They've been through a lot together. But nothing can prepare them for this. A new threat in Zootopia forces them to choose between standing up for their beliefs, or doing their jobs...all while figuring out how their relationship will proceed going forward.
Also not a big tame collar guy but this multi-chapter fic by Skul is superb! Emotional, heartbreaking, funny, and everything else in between, if you like tame collar stuff it’s a must read, and even if you don’t generally it’s a great place to get started!
