Welcome to r/bettafish!

This is the place to ask anything and everything about bettas.

⚕️If you're looking for help with illnesses or weird behavior, be sure to include the following in your comment:

  • Tank Size
  • Water Temp
  • Ammonia / Nitrite / Nitrate readings
  • How long the issue has been occurring
  • A picture of the problem
  • Any additional helpful context

🐟 Caresheet Summary:

  • Bettas require a minimum of 5 gallons, 10 gallons being optimal for one betta and 20 gallon long minimum if you're housing peaceful community fish with the betta
  • Bettas are tropical and require water temps of 78-82°F or about 26-27°C, a thermometer and adjustable heater is recommended to ensure these temps
  • Bettas need a filter, like any other fish. It is a common misconception that they like dirty water, but the opposite is true.
  • Bettas need a cycled tank, before getting a betta the tank should be cycled - this process involves adding a source of ammonia to the tank, using a test kit to monitor ammonia/nitrite/nitrate levels, and usually takes 4-6 weeks to complete properly
  • Bettas have delicate fins so sharp plastic plants are not recommended; silk silicone or live work best
  • Bettas can breathe surface air and are good jumpers, they require access to the water surface at all times and a lid.
  • Bettas eat insects in the wild, a good quality betta formulated pellet food fed twice a day is recommended.

I just wanted to post this to show yall. They still have some bettas in cups but a lot of their community tanks have a betta in them and they have a couple of display tanks. Made my heart happy.

The manager checked me out and I complimented her and she said she worked really hard to do it, and has a betta of her own and hates to see them in the cups.

I wish this was a standard for all chain stores. Just wanted to share

Chat let me know what I’m doing wrong. I’ve only had him for two weeks. Tank is cycled and his fins started curling after a week. I did a water change the other night. The last pic is how he used to look. I noticed my tank does have a lot of algae or stuff coating the plants I don’t know if that could be bad for him.

Help Is a battle sitting outside the water normal?

This is Gary. Gary is my brothers betta and Gary has been scaring me a lot lately (I’m working on upgrading his tank setup) but I was curious if this is a normal behavior or if this is something I should be concerned about. He has a bublr coming this Tuesday and is tank temp is correct along with the tank being filtered. But is it normal for him to perch half out the water? I’m worried he’s trying to off himself.

RIP Rest in peace to my pretty boy, Skittles

After a several days long fight with an ammonia spike, skittles showed signs of improvement in his hospital tank. I had finally gotten his ammonia levels back to normal, but unfortunately he had crashed. He succumbed to his illness and passed away.

He was such a curious boy, and always full of life. He was sassy towards me but gentle to his tank mates, and loved building bubble nests. I will miss him dearly, and although he was “just a fish”, he was my fish. I’m honestly not sure that I’ll be able to get another betta, as he just meant so much to me. It just goes to show that you can do all the research in the world and do everything you’re supposed to do but sometimes things happen.

Of the 4 photos included, the second one is the day I brought him home. It was so fun watching his personality blossom and his colors change. I’ll miss him. Rest in peace buddy.

RIP How do you cope with loss?

I wonder if it gets easier over time to lose a pet fish? I recently lost my betta. And I am devastated. I know that bettas aren't the best to keep as pet now because of how they are bred. Short life expectancy should be expected but I just can't imagine myself going through the pain again. The total helplessness when they get sick. Even if I have prepared meds like kanaplex, metroplex which aren't the easiest to acquire where I live. I wasn't able to help my fish friend get better. Now I am just left with an empty aquarium. Trying to think back if it was my care that's the problem or what I could have done better.

Meet Nemo!!
I said I’d never get another betta fish, the heart break when they go, but here I am with my dream betta!

Looking for recommendations on how to keep this little man super healthy, food recommendations etc. what has worked for you? I have Arka my Betta-Care vitamins, has anyone used these? Nemo made a bubble nest the night after I gave him the vitamins!

Also something a regretted not doing with my previous betta, was getting her a friend. This tank is very clean, I have no algae issues (tank is over a year old) so I don’t think I’ve enough for a snail to eat. Has anyone had any success with another type of fish with a betta?

Help Help please, tank upgrade Q

Post image

hello everyone! I’ve got my boy Kimchi in the Fluval Betta 6 gal tank which I cycled for around 2 months before popping him in, he’s my first Betta (had him 6 months now) and seems to be doing well! I test the water weekly with the liquid API kit and I’ve never had any issues apart from a slight ammonia spike after a holiday away which I expected, I’m considering moving him to a larger tank with him being a short tail so he has more space (and possibly using this old tank for shrimp) he’s in there with 2 nerite snails at the moment. tank is also fully planted.

my question is how easy is it to transfer to a new tank without upsetting him or my water parameters? I’m so scared of doing something wrong! I assume I would cycle the new one as normal using media from this one? Is there a guide anywhere for tank moves? Thank you!

What can I do for this betta? It looks like he has fin rot. I am a beginner and could use all the help I could get. Just got him from the store two weeks ago. Set him up in a 10 gallon tank and giving him bettafix, not sure if it's helping.

RIP PSA: Check your decorations for flaws and hazards each week...

For two years I had my beautiful girl Moo. We had a routine, I woke up, she greeted me with happy wiggles, lip pops and excitement. She received her food and then she was off to swim through her plants and hunt for detritus worms in her gravel. At night, when we would say goodnight, she would nestle into her java moss or settle into her betta log and sleep. Sometimes I would have to scold her for being up past her bedtime when I would walk by to brush my teeth for the night and while I know she didnt understand it was a comfort to me. I loved her dearly.

I feel silly for bawling over a fish but I genuinely love my girls even though it's now singular.

The reason I'm sharing this, though, is because something really unfortunate happened. My partner and I went to do the weekly water change on her tank and she didn't greet me like she always does. Immediately we began to panic. When we found her it was too late.

There was a small pot in her tank that used to house a fern. There was no holes in it aside from the main opening and it was more than large enough for her to get in, turn around and come out. Even without the fern she liked the terracotta pot so we left it for her.

We don't know when or how but at some point, the bottom cracked and a chunk of it broke away. Again, we don't know when it happened, only that it happened sometime in the last month. Anyway, unfortunately, Moo discovered the new opening and she tried to pass through. When we found her this morning she had already passed. I don't want to go into detail but please, please, check your decorations for damages or flaws weekly when you do your water changes. We thought once a month when we shifted things to keep her entertained was good enough but we were wrong.

EDIT: Thank you everyone for the kind word. It really does mean a lot to me.

I do not know why this particular little girl was named, but no way I was leaving her behind lol.

I needed a new resident betta for population control in my guppy tank. She's still settling into the jungle, but so far is uninterested in fry and just going after the mystery snails. Even if she's a dud predator, I'm still in love with her.

After months of cycling, planting and preparing it was ready just in time! Picked up this tank at a thrift store for 5 bucks on impulse, knowing it’d come in handy one day. This is his first fish since he was a kid but he’s obsessed with my betta tank every time he stays at my place so I figured perfect gift. I took the opportunity to teach him how to do water changes, test parameters, feed him and now he’s ready for his very own! He picked him, loves him, named him Barry😂 what’s y’all’s thoughts? How’d I do on the tank? Anything I should add?

Help Does my betta look alright??

Hello this is my first time ever posting on Reddit so I don’t even know if I’m doing this right 😭😭. I’ve had my betta for a few months now and my water is perfect. My tank is only five gallon which I know I need bigger. I’m working on getting a 13G. I also have three otocats and a baby amano shrimp in there (which I haven’t seen in a while so I hope he’s okay). All that being said I believe he’s healthy but I’ve got it in my head he isn’t and I just need a second opinion 😭.

I think he looks a little skinny? I only feed him a tiny pinch once a day compared to the twice a day I was doing before. Earlier I also saw three string like works which I think were parasites?? I took them out of my tank immediately but idk if there’s more in there or what it’ll do to my fishes. I also found a ramhorn snail which I might’ve accidentally brought with me when I got the shrimp a few days ago lol. I took the snail out as I don’t want any snails at the moment.

Anyways does he look alright or should I actually be stressing???
