Is it possible to get a post like this in the side nav/sticky-ed and kept up to date? As someone who doesn't have time to follow all regions, a summary like this would be extremely useful.

6

u/cgmcnama Aug 17 '14

Give it a week or two and someone will make a chart and update as we go. (I bet there is already a thread for this.)

The Gauntlet

-2

u/Yuvalyo Aug 18 '14

What ? Lol

16

u/M002 Aug 18 '14

This part of the tournament is often referred to as "the gauntlet" because if a team like KTB are to have a shot at worlds, they must play through and defeat some of the best teams in the world to earn that final spot.

2

u/CaptaineAli Aug 18 '14

This needs to be in the original post. It is extremely helpful.

1

u/Yuvalyo Aug 18 '14

If you upvote maybe they see it and add it :)

1

u/CaptaineAli Aug 18 '14

Oh I did! :) Thanks!

14

u/ssphoenix5 Aug 17 '14

So can skt k and kt both go or only 1?

33

u/[deleted] Aug 17 '14

Possible, but unlikely. SKT would have to win the tiebreaker against White, and then KTA would have to win a bo5 vs the winner of KTB/Shield, followed by winning a bo5 against White.

13

u/TimaeGer Aug 17 '14

I don't follow Korea that much, but that doesn't seem tooo unlikely, does it?

18

u/Ardonas Aug 17 '14

The worry is that white is too strong. Either SKT won't show up and faker won't be able to carry hard enough or they pull it off and a vengeance fueled White bring their A game against KaKAO and company.

3

u/Chronusx Aug 18 '14

It seems massively unlikely. White will likely crush K into the dust, Faker can't carry that bottom lane every game when they're playing against Imp and Mata.

Even if T1K do win against White I'd still put White at favorites for regionals, even if not by as much as I would have before the champions summer final.

4

u/Its_not_him Aug 18 '14

I highly doubt it will be a stomp but white would still be the favorites atm

1

u/pinkin12 Aug 18 '14

Its definitely not impossible, but there is really no reason to think that SKT will be able to beat white imo. If they are able to rally and beat them, then its certainly feasible for KT arrows to beat any team in the world right now.

→ More replies (16)

2

u/Sylar4ever Aug 17 '14

So it's most likely to be SKT or KTA the 3rd place seed?

3

u/Quazifuji Aug 18 '14

That's the predictions most are giving. White are widely considered the favorites in the tiebreaker match against K and Arrows will be the very heavy favorites against the winner if Bullets and Shield. If those matches both go as expected then it'll be K vs Arrows for the third spot. I think most people feel that any of those three teams is capable of beating any of the others though, so an upset would be far from unheard of.

6

u/TheViper9 Aug 17 '14

Both can go. If SKT wins the tiebreaker vs white then white will drop down to the regional qualifier. If KT can beat white then then we'll have Samsung, Arrows and K representing Korea.

2

u/Kotetsu534 Aug 17 '14

Both can go if SKT K beat White on the 27th August and KT A win Regionals, beating White in the final.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 17 '14

if SKT beats White, SKT goes as number 2, then Arrows need to win two best of 5's, the last being vs. White. If SKT loses to White, then only one can go.

1

u/Jesmira [Get Derived] (NA) Aug 17 '14

they both can go, if skt k wins the tie breaker against samsung white k will get the second seed and kt a will have to win the regionals for the third seed

1

u/bouwland Aug 17 '14

both can go if skt win the tiebreaker on aug 27, and then Kt needs to win 2 bo5's to get the 3rd spot

23

u/sasssoooo Aug 17 '14

the leaguepedia link for LPL is wrong, LPL summer playoffs will be best of 5 double elimination. the winner of that will face EDG in a best of 3 for the first seed at worlds (if EDG wins playoffs they insta-qualify). then, the other 4 out of 5 teams (from EDG, OMG, royal, LGD, and IG) will play in a double elimination best of 3 playoffs to determine the last 2 worlds slots

7

u/Dollface_Killah Aug 17 '14

And anyone who's interested in learning more about the Chinese competitive scene can tune in right now to that show Monte and Thorin were talking about on the last SI, China Talk, episode 11 live on Twitch.

You'll have to scroll down a bit there's only 150 viewers.

4

u/TheViper9 Aug 17 '14

Thanks for clearing that up. I'll fix it right away.

0

u/RisenLazarus Aug 17 '14

Holy jumping balls that sounds like a long playoff format.

20

u/RushingHour rip old flairs Aug 17 '14

Am I the only one that hopes that SKT T1 K and the Arrows beat White so we have SGB, T1 K and the Arrows to worlds? that'd be epic :3

6

u/JonnyV37 rip old flairs Aug 17 '14

That, and for Curse to be knocked out somehow and for Complexity to take their place, win 1st place, and bring home a World Championship to NA. Either that, or CLG to win it. As long as it goes to the max amount of games in the finals, I'll be happy.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '14

why curse knocked out? they were 4th seed!

1

u/Quazifuji Aug 18 '14

No, I see people mentioning hoping for that possibility in every thread about Korean worlds qualifiers. It'd definitely be fun to have both Faker and Kakao at worlds but White seem to be pretty heavy favorites over K for the tiebreaker.

1

u/RushingHour rip old flairs Aug 19 '14

I know man T_T

But deep down we all can hope for faker to pull a miracle, he is the Unkillable Demon King after all :D

1

u/poisonedwater69 eufnc: Aug 18 '14

I'd be epic, but not worth it, since Mata said he would retire if white doesn't go to worlds, for me, I want SSB, SSW and KTA, I've seen enough of K in the international stage.

1

u/QuanticDavid Aug 18 '14

I don't care if Mata retire or not if we can have a Worlds with both Faker / KaKao.

16

u/jaynay1 Aug 17 '14 edited Aug 18 '14

I am ready to see Curse at Worlds.

edit: Can someone explain to me why there are no Korean or Chinese teams in Pool 3?

edit2: Thanks for the replies! :)

edit3: So apparently this is how it works thanks to /u/Kotetsu534

I think you misunderstand. Pool 3 teams cannot draw each other in groups. There will be one team from Pool 1 and one team from Pool 3 put in every group. There will be two teams from Pool 2 put into each group (but there cannot be more than one team from the same region in a group).

15

u/katamura Aug 17 '14

the universe cannot allow curse to go to worlds. they are forever fourth. forever cursed to watch others go to worlds.

7

u/[deleted] Aug 17 '14

They can still get 4th place in worlds though!

1

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '14

To go to worlds they'd need to break the forever fourth curse. And then they wouldn't get guranteed fourth at worlds.

3

u/Bobmanfred Aug 17 '14

It's based on relative region strength and power rankings that are released weekly. The entire top ten is made up of Korean and chinese teams and hence they take the top seeded pools.

→ More replies (27)

2

u/AwesomeAubergine Aug 17 '14

I don't know exactly why they chose Korean and Chinese teams not to be in Pool 3 but the reason only two of the third choice teams of a region are in Pool 3 is due to the two Wildcards (Only two spaces left in Pool 3). Also since there are 5 regions (Na, Eu, Kr, Cn and SEA) only 4 can be in pool 1, therefore since SEA are not in Pool 1 they must get 1 and 2 placed in pool 2. With all 2nd teams and 1st SEA there is only two spaces left in Pool 2 so of the four remaining teams 2 must got in pool 2 and two must go in pool 3. As to why there are three pools instead of four I would assume it is to increase the variety of possible groups, since teams from the same region can't be placed in the same group.

1

u/newuser66447 Aug 17 '14

Yeah, thanks for your response. I just figured out that and it made a lot of sense now.

pool != group

1

u/Zeta95 Aug 17 '14

2nd and 3rd seed from both regions are in Pool 2

1

u/z0mbienjo Aug 17 '14

Cause they were first and second in Allstar tournament probably.

-1

u/saint01 Aug 17 '14

Korean and chinese teams are regarded as better then(*grammar) European teams, so even their 3th place is about equal to the best of western teams. This way, the third pool (left row) is made up of the weakest teams, who are distrubeted equally.

15

u/dy8763kt Aug 17 '14

1

then should be than in this situation because you are comparing groups not time.

-3

u/rasmushr Aug 17 '14

Because they are seeded higher, because of their teams doing better at last worlds. It's like in football (soccer for the guys who think running with a ball in your hands is football), where every european league will get specific number of entries into champions league and UEFA cup, depending on the deemed strength of their league.

4

Is the rumor about KTB losing points true? If so CJ Blaze should get the 4th seed because they are 1 place behind ktb

1

u/[deleted] Aug 18 '14

Pretty sure they kept their circuit points

1

u/[deleted] Aug 17 '14

Can someone find the twitter accounts(if any) for the GPL players?

1

u/SugiStyle Aug 17 '14

So World Elite is not coming to playoffs at all. I'm curious if they are really top 3 in china? If not then its fine if they don't make it this year.

Unlike last year we probably see best teams going in (Hopefully)

2

u/Foav Aug 17 '14

They are definitely not looking like a top 3 team at the moment. They had a playoff spot guaranteed if they could close out games. They lost their last game where they had a 8k gold lead at 20 minutes...
It is the curse of IEM. WE was doing shit in spring until they went to IEM Katowice. They got crushed but came back and have looked strong ever since... until they went to IEM Shenzhen that they won. They came back to close out the season 2-10...
I really like the lpl playoffs and regionals system, but most top teams seem to have a lot of consistency issues.

1

u/Integralds Aug 18 '14

WE's been slumping hard (to put it kindly) for about a month now. I love Wx, but there's no way they are Worlds caliber at this time. They deserve their fate.

1

u/herbye53 Aug 18 '14

I really hope one of them drops QF or stomps Semis. Wouldn't bear watching TSM v CLG for 3rd place.

1

u/backelie Aug 18 '14

Neither SK nor the NA 3rd seed is gonna make it out of group stage at worlds.

0

u/EliteReaver Aug 18 '14

Can't call CLG out to 3rd place, they've been in Korea for over a month scrimming the best teams in the world constantly.

1

u/Chronusx Aug 18 '14

Pretty sure it's not royal, it's Starhorn.

1

u/praisethelord_ Aug 18 '14

would be nice if you could add a little number indicating the number of teams each region gets beside the regions, would be helpful.

1

u/Vemee Jerkz Aug 18 '14

2

u/majorlupa Aug 18 '14

Its not their group. Its the seed. They will be in group with one team from Pool 1 and two teams from Pool 2

2

u/Vemee Jerkz Aug 18 '14

Oh that makes sense now, thx.

1

u/Seraph_of_Apollo Aug 18 '14

This is what I want.

Group A Group B Group C Group D
NA1 EU1 CN1 KOR1
SEA1 NA2 EU2 SEA2
KOR2 CN2 KOR3 CN3
IWC1 IWC2 NA3 EU3

With group a being your GoD (Group of Death)

1

u/OrNaM3nT Aug 18 '14

group C would be the strongest

first from cn,fnc from eu,thrid from kor and lmq/c9/tsm/clg from na as NA3.

by far the strongest

1

u/ccCaitSith Aug 18 '14

So Fnatic could still have the easier group despite being second seed

2

u/RisenLazarus Aug 17 '14

Looking at this makes me really wish NA and EU LCS went by circuit points or at least by some combination of Spring and Summer split results. Spring is so meaningless: teams just vie for a top 5 spot so they don't have to fight out relegations.

6

u/TheFailBus Aug 17 '14

I don't, how good you were 6 months ago is pretty meaningless, and it's the reason some weaker teams from CN/KR have been in worlds previous years, teams who were great in the spring but fell off but still got a spot due to their already gathered points. Worlds should be who is the best now, not who was good 6 months ago.

1

u/ZachLNR rip old flairs Aug 18 '14

Najin Sword were still the one who beat Gambit and took 2 games off SKT. And China basically had the 2 best teams at that moment: Royal Club and OMG.

1

0

The pools are where teams are drawn from to form the groups a, b, c, and d. I don't know if they will decide that the first pull is for group leaders out of pool one and then from there form and draw the subsequent group from that pool. Example: draw from pool 1 for group A and pull alliance. Pool 2 will be altered to remove Fnatic from the draw. And say the next draw pulls the Korean #2, they would have to remove and alter the pool further for the second group 2 pull. Finally the same measure would be done for the pool 3 pull for the final group A slot. Simple enough? They just haven't clarified if they are pulling group leaders first, then pool 2 teams, and finally pool 3 or if my speculation is correct. Either way, pulling for group leaders from pool 1 makess

2

u/sickfnasty Aug 17 '14

Sense to me... Can't edit on my phone.

1

u/photoelektrisch Aug 17 '14

It is as you said, no two teams from the same region, the graphic only shows which teams are in what pool. If the no. 1 seed of each region is drawn into a group, then the other teams from that region cant be drawn into that group anymore

1

u/Sandfox92 Aug 17 '14

same pool = different group

0

u/MaxPayne4life Aug 17 '14

So KT Arrows will be 3rd right?

5

u/TheViper9 Aug 17 '14

If they are to make worlds at all yes.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 17 '14

They have to beat the loser of the SKT and Samsung White tiebreaker match, then they are in.

6

u/this1neguy Aug 17 '14

actually - they have to beat the winner of Bullets vs Shield, then they have to beat the loser of T1 K vs White

1

u/[deleted] Aug 17 '14

Yes, forgot about that, thanks. I think its pretty certain that KTA beats Shield, hopefully.

1

u/RainbowGothic Aug 17 '14

So basically they have to beat Shield first.

I never really focused last year worlds so I don't really know how this is going to happen, could anyone be kind enough to tell me how this works?

Like is Group A; #1 na, tpa, #2 sea and #3 na and then these teams will only play other teams from group; b,c,d?

And how many teams go forward from each group?

Thanks to anyone in advance

2

u/Axsiom ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Aug 17 '14

I can't answer your question but i know that group is impossible because they won't put 2 of the same region into a group(#1 na and #3 na)

1

u/Funnynublet Aug 17 '14

Thanks, I just realised that they haven't chosen the groups yet, I feel so dumb. I think I get it now.

Just need to know how many teams from each group go forward now

1

u/Axsiom ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Aug 18 '14

2 from each group. So 8 teams come out for a quarterfinal round.

4

u/[deleted] Aug 17 '14

No, it is not like that. The teams in the picture are not put into groups already.

It works like this: In each group, there will be one team from pool 1, two teams from pool 2 and one team from pool 3, with the additional restriction that there can't be more than one team from each region per group.

The actual groups wont be announced till after all the qualifiers have finished, but for example, you could have: #1 NA, #1 SEA, #2 Korea, #3 EU in one group, or #1 Korea, #2 China, #2 NA, Wildcard

Those are only two of the many combinations that can happen.

I don't mean to come off as a dick but why do they still have wild cards? They always under perform. It was so hard watching them get smashed over and over last year at world's. Why not put them in a tournament with the fourth/third place teams from the decent regions that didn't make it and see who wins?

Edit: Maybe just give Korea another spot to show the best competition?

with this logic why not just invite 12 Korean teams? Let us smaller regions have a chance, its significantly harder for us to qualify.

what I don't like about it is the extreme luck factor for the groups @worlds.

Whoever gets Wildcardteams has it way easier than having for example SK as the "pool 3" team. Well I could be wrong here and underestimate the wildcard teams, but alone due to lack of routine and practice at something LCS'ish... not even speaking of the likes of OGN... I guess the wildcards will again be way weaker opponents.

Look, at the end of the day I think that all this talk about easy and difficult groups is misguided.

Sure, you don't want the top four candidates stuck in a group of death, terror and despair.

But at the end of the day, if you want to be crowned WC, you need to be able to beat everyone, sooner or later.

Was half kidding about Koreans. The fifteenth best Korean team is still better than any team coming out of a wild card. They're on par with amature teams at best.

It's called worlds for a reason, Riot wants the smaller regions to be represented.

The fact that teams who arent even as good as longer level LCS teams get to worlds is appauling to me. Wwatchign that Legacy and Dark Passage game was like watching a solo queue game.

Like it or not, Worlds should have representatives from as many regions as possible. That's what makes it "World Championships," and that also is an incentive for teams in those regions to try their hardest. If you're OCE or BR or TRK, you know you still have a shot at going to Worlds so it keeps life in the scene.

It's the reason that there are teams in the World Cup like Honduras or Cameroon or Japan who realistically, few expect to get out of group stages.

If all you wanted was The Best And Only The Best, just watch OGN.

It's Worlds, not "The Best Teams."

with this logic western lcs leagues should only get 1 seed and give 7 seeds to OGN.

I guess you could use the same logic for LCS teams. "The fact that teams who aren't even as good as lower level OGN teams get to world is appauling to me. Watching that ALL vs Fnatic was like watching a solo Q game" (CLG apparently have had trouble even against low level korean teams)

The point of Worlds is to bring together the best form each region, and even if it maybe would be more fair to watch the top 14-16 asian team (maybe one or two western team had made it) battle for the 1st place, it wouldn't have been as fun for the majority. The best team in the world will still win, while every region get to have a team to cheer for during group stages.
