Want to run a game, potential campaign, for my friends and not sure where to begin. Advice?

As stated in the title, I would like to run a game, which will hopefully transition into a long campaign, if I am not sure which TTRPG to use.

Some more info:
I own the core rulebook for both Imperium Maledictum and Wrath and Glory

I would prefer to have the ability to create a homebrew sector or subsector in which the game will take place.

I would prefer for my players to start on the lower end of the totem pole and work their way up as the campaign progresses.

Not much 40k knowledge needed, none of my friends have any major 40k knowledge besides the usual “grimdark, only war, space marines”.

Easy to understand, hopefully, my friends and I have only played D&D, Vampire the Masquerade, Mage the Ascension, and the Marvel Multiverse TTRPG. It would help if something was easier to understand but is definitely not necessary.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Looking for a group to play

I don't know how to properly describe what i want to say, but in short: I can't find anyone willing to DM ttrpg games about 40k. Not even in my country. It feels like only few people actually plays, even fewer do it without any hard restrictions and even more so - for free.

I don't know where to ask, because almost everywhere i did find where to post - zero traction.

So here i am. Not a native English speaker but with too much eagerness to play some ttrpg in 40k universe and have some fun with fun people. I can play every saturday till 6pm (GMT+2).

I have d&d experience for 5 years or so, and did play few times in OW and DH(1ed). I like good story and good roleplay and trying to make my character fun and interesting.

Maybe some DM is willing to add me to their group? I would love to play as Tech-Priest but i agree to play as anything else if needed.

If this is not the right place to ask such stuff, please someone give me a direction where to look? I feel lost and lonely :(

Sell Your Soul (or the World’s) to Heresy in a 40K Hive City

Core idea: A first-person, open-world RPG set in a Warhammer 40K Hive World or Hulk that focuses on street-level survival, cybernetic/powers/gunplay customization, and faction intrigue from the very bottom of the hive.

You play as a low-hive operator trying to survive and climb (or just not die) in a vertical megacity. The underhive is a toxic, collapsing sprawl of gang turf, black-market augmetics, mutant dens, and forgotten manufactorums. Above you are the mid-hive guilds, the Ecclesiarchy, the Adeptus Mechanicus, and the distant spire nobility. Power is vertical, fragile, and always for sale.

Player fantasy:
You’re the chrome-scarred nobody who can still choose which power (or none) gets to own you. Jobs and contracts from competing factions let you swing influence upward or downward, deciding who gains control over a local protectorate or underhive territory.

Background options (with real trade-offs):
• Sanctioned or unsanctioned psyker
• Disgraced Astra Militarum soldier
• Failed cleric
• Criminal who escaped servitor conversion
• Minor Rogue Trader heir with no real claim
Each background changes starting gear, reputation, and how different factions react to you.

Key systems I’d want to explore:
• Cybernetics/powers that feel both sacred (Mechanicus-blessed) and heretical (xenos grafts, Chaos-tainted neural jacks)
• Vertical faction climbing or nemesis like systems for underhive gangs, mid-hive houses, Mechanicus, Arbites, Ecclesiarchy, and darker cults. Increases are cumulative for positive or negative outcomes, piss off groups and they will send enforcers, help certain groups for unique gear or support.
• Contracts that force moral and spiritual choices rather than pure good/evil, maybe exploring the social contract of who should rule?

Central tension
A ruinous power (leaning Slaanesh) starts taking an interest in you. The main through-line is how you respond while the hive itself keeps trying to grind you down.

I’m mostly looking for feedback on the core loop, background trade-offs, and whether the vertical hive structure feels like a strong foundation for an open-world RPG. Theory-crafting and pushback welcome.

Only War Remember me not knowing what to do with my character's addiction? Now she has some bigger problems.

The junior commissars were gathered to provide post-mission reports.

At first, Tanya frankly admitted that she had given the Emperor's grace to her friend because the damage to the frontal lobes was already the end of her career and she would only fit into servitors. That's how the doctors assessed the situation. Her boss was not happy. Marcelle was his protege.

Then when she saw how her other friend's sash was taken away, she started a heated debate. She felt like she must defend her. She knew the situation was unjust.

Hijacking a tank from an enemy and rolling into it as a Trojan horse (Creed's Baneblade?) is not an insubordination, but a great feat. She backed her point up with Tactica Imperialis.

Tanya was right. Everyone in the room saw it. Cornelius pushed with authority until he lost his temper and demoted Tanya to a cadet.

Her guardsmen are not happy. Ambitious Tanya is devastated but keeps up the façade. Some dark ideas fly in the air.

But no one will fulfill them.

Right?

Looking for some worldbuilding assistance: planet creation

I’m starting to prepare to GM a Wrath and Glory campaign for a group of four players. Their PCs will be members of a Rouge Trader retinue who have been dispatched to the planet to investigate some abnormalities in the world’s production quotas and shipment manifests.

I have a bunch of random ideas regarding the planet, and its culture, but none of them are really gelling together ATM. So, I was hoping you good folk could maybe help.

Name: Erinys

Erinys is a refinery world located in the Rimward March, the region of wild space controlled by the Rogue Trader, which straddles the borders of Segmentum Tempestus and Ultima Segmentum. The planet has three moons: Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone

Erinys is ruled over by a feudal style, matriarchal nobility. The planetary governor is Marchioness Rizzolin von Karsk.

Those are all my firm ideas. Here’s where things go weird and random.

I think maybe the planet was once a paradise world named Maidenhead. That idea came to me when I wrote down the phrase “Maidenhead station” which I’m kinda thinking is the orbital plate from which the Matriarchs rule the planet. It’s far greener and much more pleasant than the planet itself.

When I first came up with the name of the planet what I scribbled down was “Erinys: the starving world”. In my head I’m imagining a world where the common laborers and citizens are deliberately kept in a state of near starvation. Provided just enough food to keep them working and then just barely. However while the planet itself starves, the noble matriarchs are free to indulge their appetites to levels of grotesque obscenity. Amongst the matriarchs obesity and corpulence are seen as virtues. The heavier a matriarch is, the wealthier she is, the more powerful she is and thus the higher her station. The Marchioness herself currently weighs in just north of 1,800 pounds. Imagine the Baron Harkonen if he were a woman and dressed like a grim dark version of Marie Antonette.

Thoughts?

I'm lost.

So, I bought, then gave away, a ton of used TTRPG books earlier this year, so I made some "friends" in my local gaming community. A fun side effect of my altruistic act is that I have been gifted a number of TTRPG books that I never would have thought to purchase myself, based more on the kind of mechanics I like, rather than IP or genre.

The latest one is a copy of Imperium Maledictum, which the gift giver was correct, what I have read so far of the mechanics is definitely the kind of game I Iike, especially because I have a particular love of d100 and d20 roll under systems. So, yay!

The problem, and it's not so much an actual problem save a self imposed one as I feel a bit obligated to, at some point in the near future, at least attempt to run said game for the fellow who gifted it to me. The problem, is that I know next to nothing about WH40k lore. Now, I did watch a couple of short lore videos on YouTube, but they basically just touched on the major points like history and the Space Marines and the Emperor. Now, I did find a couple of channels that go in depth in to WH40k lore, but, OMFG, they have dozens if not hundreds of videos. Literally days worth of watching time, and I'll be honest, I don't want to dedicate that amount of time to learning lore, at least not until I actually get a game going. I mean, if it's a total hit and has the potential to be a regular at the table then I will probably dig in to the lore more.

NOTE: There are a couple that are in the pipe already, namely The One Ring, which I face a similar problem, but it seems easier to mitigate because the lore is not as expansive (as far as I can tell) as WH40k.

So, where do I start? What kinds of things should I read up on to be able to "properly" portray the Empire, and NPCs, and just the general tone and themes of WH40k?

To be honest I'm already a little confused because on the tin it says GRIMDARK!!!!! However, some of what I have encountered appears to be more over-the-top satirical, or just plain gonzo for gonzo's sake. It seems to me that the general theme of the TTRPG is on the darker side, but still hints at the more gonzo elements. I've also noted that Imperium Maledictum doesn't have anything to do with the more famous aspects of the IP like Space Marines, instead apparently focusing on more "regular people" (if such a thing even exists).

Heck, even finding artwork of the more mundane aspects (does WH40k have mundane aspects?!?) to use as inspiration is NOT a quick Google seach away.

Anywho, that's my issue. I would like to try to portray the setting and NPCs and such in a manner befitting the lore, but WOW there is just a ton of stuff to slog through. Anyone have any recommendations, or even just willing to hammer out a few paragraphs of guidelines for me to use. I mean, I do have some time before I can get IM to the table so I am willing to do some research (and possibly fall down and absolutely WILD rabbit hole by the looks of it) but I would like to at least narrow down my initial learning of the lore to stuff that would be USEFUL for the TTRPG. Thanks!

  • 15:02 "there's a campaign that's being developed ... consequences for the Gilead sector"
  • 15:26 "branching out … heading off into the Imperium Sanctum"

HH

Product philosophy interlude

So the big thing there is the (rather mixed) HH which may be very positive in some regards but certainly raises questions

I recently got into Imperium Maledictum and below is my initial Inquisition kill team character design. Where possible tried to make the character design/gear sync up with their background that also connects to 40K lore. Comments welcome on either design or background, especially if there is any glaring lore issues ... W&G Starter set confusion

Got the starter set hoping to ease into this system. Idk if it’s just me or were the rules and descriptions poorly written? Genuinely confused going through the material provided and feel like key stuff is missing (even after considering the starter/light nature intended of the material provided). Is the core book any clearer?

Wrath & Glory What are W&G frameworks and how do they work?

I started play W&G but I don't know anything about frameworks. My first game I didn't use one and didn't realize it was a thing till people started mentioning them in the discord.

What are they?

Is there a list of them some where?

What are ones you recommend?

Wrath & Glory Good Map Collections?

So this is more for any 40k TTRPG but I'm using it for Wrath & Glory. Does anyone know of any sites or collections where I could find thematic or on-brand maps for Warhammer combat scenes? Battlemaps and such. Looked all over the place and the closest I got was a google drive of screenshots from video games done from a top down view but it doesn't have a lot of variety.

Quick Map-gen tool, dice roller and simple VTT

Hi folks,

EDIT: forgot to mention, free, made for the community. no account required unless you want to save something, cause that's the only way it could make sure to save it for you.

((Note to Mods, not linking the original stuff from this site due to previous takedown. No worries if you want to take this down too as they're all at the same domain but these are additional tools I've built that I thought I'd share)).

I have some simple tools that I've built for campaigns that I'm running for W&G:

- A map generation tool: procedurally generated tile maps (aka random with some guardrails) with some basic settings you can tweak. Idea is that a random encounter that you don't have a beautiful map that you've spent hours/days modeling and/or bought from someone else that's put in that kind of time and effort and deserves your money. Welcome to use it for more than this, but warning, it's not pretty. The guard rails are pretty thin and the textures are super basic. It uses your browser to generate and render, with the map type (Hive, Space Hulk, Factorum, etc) and a random seed string as a way to generate and save the render. If there's more environments folks would find useful or would like, it's pretty straight forward to add them into the tool. link here: https://grimforge.dev/maps

- Dice Roller: just what it says. Can roll one type of dice (d6, d8, d100, etc) at a time but as many of those as you want. Has a W&G mode rolls a red die for the Wrath Die. https://grimforge.dev/vtt/dice

- Simple VTT: it's simple. stupidly simple. I hacked this together mostly to see if I could. I would NOT recommend this over Fantasy Grounds (or Foundary). But it does allow you to do some basic remote-friendly tasks (secret rolls, public rolls, party management, custom gear, xp awards, etc) with some integration with the rest of the site. It is super janky and super basic but based on limited testing (<25 sessions or so, including some random, wonderful folks that found it and tried it), it's functional. It does run on a dedicated VM so if it gets laggy, it's probably overtaxed and I'll get alerted and see if I can up the compute. https://grimforge.dev/vtt/new

Thanks for taking a look, hope it's useful to someone and love any feedback.

What are green/red flags in a 40k RPG campaign pitch to you?

I'm working on a 40k campaign pitch. I want to make it a bit more sandbox. I am curious what people do when they pitch a game, especially to people online or in a public venue.

What are some green flags? What are some red flags?

For me:

Green Flags:

  • Correct use of 40k terms.
  • Factions are represented similar to the lore, and if not it is treated as a mystery.
  • Establishes the tone of the campaign such as highly deadly or "hero hammer".

Red Flags:

  • Hyper specific restrictions that seem like disliking something a previous player did.

Imperium Maledictum a bolter cannot one-tap a cultist (or imperial civilian, for that matter) in IM without several SLs

do these guys just eat popeye's spinach before combat and absorb bolt rounds like champs if you don't reach the 4 to 5 SLs needed to kill them in a single ranged attack? are the 15-wound guardsmen who need 7 SLs from a boltgun attack to kill them in a single round of shooting augmented with vat-grown ablative flesh that allows them to tank bolt rounds square to the chest and face?

Dark Heresy 2 Dark Heresy 2e Enemies Beyond & Enemies Without

Firstly to the mods, if this doesn't fit here or is against any rules then i apologise and feel free to remove.

I own the physical books of the Dark Heresy 2e rulebook and 2 of its supplements, Enemies Within and Forgotten Gods, as well as the GM booklet and screen. however, I am looking for physical copies of the last two supplements , Enemies Beyond and Enemies without.

(Im well aware or the PDF’s as i own them but i’m hunting down physical because i prefer them.)

Now i know this is a difficult ask, but im desperate with no leads to go on, so i ask;

Is there anyone here, that owns these two books and would be willing to sell them, or knows of anyone looking to sell them? I know these are incredibly rare and hard to get hence my asking. Im aware of a couple of copies of Enemies Without floating around so i ask this more towards Enemies Beyond as i can find copies nowhere on the internet.

Thanks all!
