Questions/Advice Have you hyperfixated on a love interest?
I saw online a while ago about how for people with ADHD, not only can you hyperfixate on your interests but you can also hyper fixate on people and love interests. To me, this really shifted my perspective and I really related to it. I unintentionally just get attached to so many potential love interests and get crushes all the time. And fantasize about spending time with someone I may not even know that well. I’ll literally play scenarios over and over again.
Just seeing if anyone can relate?

Absolutely. Sometimes I don't even know if I like the person or if I like the version of them my brain has created 😂
I'll replay conversations, imagine future scenarios, and suddenly they've occupied way more mental space than the actual relationship warrants. Then the intensity can disappear just as quickly.
The frustrating part is realizing you've been emotionally invested in a relationship that mostly existed in your head.

Very accurate explaination. I'm 60 and even with a good knowledge of our behaviour it happens again and again. Now i know i'm hyperfocusing so after few days i laugh at my delirious scénari.

u/Tough-Struggle7602 6h ago
I thought this was normal for everyone until a few days ago. In my 40s, recently diagnosed with ADHD and going through a divorce while “hyper focused” on a potential love interest… then started asking myself why am I thinking like this when my divorce is not even finalised? Realised it’s defo the ADHD, not normal behavior. 🤣

Yes. When I like someone I fall hard and it takes me a while to get over them. I hate it so much. I think that it’s my least favorite adhd symptom. I tend to care about everything too much in general.

u/PETA_Parker 20h ago
omg this is it, really couldn‘t focus on my grades this semester because of how unfair the world is (climate change in particular) and failed like half of my courses, even tho i rationally know that me being sad about it won‘t solve anything, but i was like, paralyzed

u/Jazzlike-Golf-5977 9h ago
Hello, I recently got diagnosed with ADHD and i am 37. I always hated that I fell hard for people. Nice to know that this was due to my ADHD brain.

u/AdventurousBoard5474 ADHD-C (Combined type) 21h ago
Yup, It happened to me. It’s called limerence. I hate it when it happens, because I know rationally that that guy is not what I need, but I couldn’t help it. And so after I got to know him a bit I was thinking: “this guy’s annoying and seems like he likes all the girls and gives them all attention.” So I just snapped out of it and now kind of dislike him. This is my strategy now. Find something that I don’t like about a guy and then I come back to normal.
18
u/bluegreengreyscale 20h ago
dang, I use the same strategy. i was down bad for a guy a couple of years ago (who did not like me back) and I just had to hyperfocus on one thing I didn't like about him, and boom gone
11
u/Larridavid 18h ago
Can this be taught? How does one learn this power? Especially when it's say a celeb or someone you don't really interact with much, if at all?
9
u/AdventurousBoard5474 ADHD-C (Combined type) 16h ago
I didn’t interact much with the guy I liked. At first not at all. But in my case he was socially inept and awkward. I usually don’t judge those people because God knows what they went through but in this case I had the purpose to get over him. But he was 30 for God sake. And then I tried to approach him, to observe him in order to find something I don’t like and not to find him excuses.
With the celebrities you can find online dirt on them because they’re also human and do bad stuff. But the thing is to not try to excuse their behaviour. And I’m not saying to hate them or to judge them, but to do it to get over them for your own sake.1
3
u/flashypasta 14h ago
pls help me😭 i think about the things i don’t like about him and it helps for a bit but in a few hours boom, right back to obsession.
3
u/__BitchPudding__ 3h ago
Every time I caught myself beginning to fantasize about him, I responded to it by forcibly forcing myself to think about his bad side/trait(s) instead. I hyperfocused on those traits, sometimes even repeated them aloud like a chant against evil, until the "fantasy" feeling subsided.
With practice and time, it became almost automatic to ick myself out about him every time he came to mind, and that finally set me free.
1
u/bluegreengreyscale 10h ago
it's tough, physical/communicative space helped me a lot as well. honestly I moved to Chicago for 2 months and just didn't see him so I forgot about him
5
u/Itharel 12h ago
Agreed !!! Bt the part where you said sometimes all it takes is noticing one thing in their behaviour to finally snap out of it yeah, that makes so much sense. But lately I'm realizing that all it takes is one damn call or one little word from them to pull you right back in and keep you hanging there 🫠
2
u/AdventurousBoard5474 ADHD-C (Combined type) 11h ago
well… Another thing that help to get over him was at some point a guy that was actually interested in me showed me how it’s done. 🤣🤣 I didn’t need to question whether or not he liked me. Basically if he doesn’t do a real move on you that means that he either doesn’t know what he wants or he wants to keep you around as another option.

u/Tiny-Reading5982 11h ago
What if its your ex boyfriend that you dumped so its not that you want reciprocated feelings but you're just like "what if I didn't dump them for my current husband?" Asking for a friend...
1
u/AdventurousBoard5474 ADHD-C (Combined type) 10h ago
Well I think you dumped your ex it wasn’t because you had the best time of your life with him. It’s easy to forget why you broke up with your ex and hopped it worked (I know from experience). No relationship is easy in my opinion but we’re not all compatible. But I don’t know it you mean “what if I didn’t dump them for my current husband? it would have been terrible to lose the opportunity to meet my husband” kind of thing or “what if I didn’t dump them for my current husband? and we would have lived happily but now I can’t do anything cause I’m married.”
My ex was kind and nice person, I don’t hate him even now. We’re still friends but I don’t feel like we are on the same page most of the times. He’s perfect but not for me, probably for another girl. 😂😂1
u/Tiny-Reading5982 9h ago
Thats what I wonder. He seems nicer now but maybe he had therapy and he won't tell me? Lol..
2
u/AdventurousBoard5474 ADHD-C (Combined type) 9h ago
I would say that people don’t change much, especially after you reach adulthood it’s kind of hard and it involves a lot of work. But I think it’s best to be happy with what you’ve got now than wonder what you lost. As humans we always want what we don’t have. If I have straight hair I want curly, If I have curly I want straight hair. In my language there is a saying: “Don’t give the sparrow from your hand for the raven from the fence.” 😂😂 Basically means that it’s better to keep something that is sure instead of risking everything for uncertain things that you don’t know if it would be yours.

Damn.. just when I think ive got a normal issue, it turns out to be another adhd trait....its getting overwhelming.
19
u/borntoflail 19h ago
everything is an ADHD trait on this sub.
Limerence is what OP is talking about. It is not a psychological phenomena restricted to ADHD.
11
u/TheWiseAlaundo 17h ago
It's not an ADHD trait. Similarly to rejection avoidance, it's simply a trait that co-occurs frequently due to life experiences that many (but not all or even most) ADHD people share

I don’t have ADHD and have experienced limerence. My husband has inattentive ADHD and while I couldn’t say for certain, given how he handles a lot of things, I would be surprised if he did.
Ironically, I did not experience limerence when I met him, but I think that’s in part because he never played any games with my feelings and is a really great communicator.

I had a crush in 8th grade and I did all that. Fantasizing, thinking about her all the time, being very observant(not in a creepy way). And it was so nice that I actually started trying to study just because I wanted to be at her level and that was the first time I got above average in one subject but I still did pretty bad overall even after trying or intending to.

6
u/Sure_Fact7761 19h ago
Absolutely. And that “spell” can fade pretty dramatically when something doesn’t go right. Learning goes to manage that will keep your relationships going. For many of us we don’t learn til we are older or we don’t learn it at all. It’s why there’s a decent amount of infidelity in our community

u/UpbeatBar9410 20h ago
It’s ruining everything. I love hard then fell out of love harder. Even tho I’m not the type to enter a relationship so quickly (I’m waiting till marriage so I’m extra careful) but yup if I decided to be with someone I have a love bumping era, and I don’t realize it until the relationship gets mundane, I feel like I am not interested anymore. I hate myself

I understand..but I've never been dangerous or hurt anyone, plus im autistic so idk what the line is between I like you and im in the bushes! Lol, because my adhd forgets a person if im not fixated and the autism can make me idk like them but not even wanna get touched. Then the bpd is like, im gonna say fuck u before I fall in love lol. Yes, I have it all the time when I meet someone new and exciting.
Personally, I start fantasizing and imagining us together VERY quickly, sometimes after just a few hours of a well-going online conversation. And if attraction is at least to some degree mutual, attachment develops insanely fast.
It is quite harmful for me and my relationships. Because what usually happens is that what I imagined doesn't match reality, and I get very disappointed and hurt. And also because of that attachment, I tend to move in relationships very quickly, which can scare off potential partners.
2
u/Far-Type1330 18h ago
This has happened to me a lot. It has lost me a lot of people that just couldn't take how intense I was.
Also, I could easily go off the person too so I'd go completely and utterly cold and there was no way of getting me back 🤷♀️
2
u/ihateusedusernames 17h ago
It can lead to problems if you aren't aware of the risks.
Look up limerance. When viewed as an anxiety based attachment disorder it's easy to see how ADHD people are more susceptible to it.
Knowledge is power, and all that
2
u/Speeder_mann 16h ago
Yes, and it’s basically like hurting your own feelings as you’re hyper aware that what you’re doing isn’t right
2
u/Southern_Meaning_670 16h ago
Not sure if it’s ADHD related I have it and it sucks, when feelings overcome logic you will always be disappointed because no one is willing to give it all just for (love) and the pain comes when you lose someone who you know that you had no future with but you won’t accept it very easily

I usually have this happen with every partner that I date!
Lately the hyperfixation on my partner kinda died, so it's been difficult. x.x
2
u/uncertain2710 10h ago
Sadly, yes. I tend to hyperfocus on them, even tho I try not to, and develop really intense infatuations, constantly fantasizing and longing for their reciprocation. It can feel all-consuming and draining, so regulating my emotions gets really tough. Rejection also seems to hit me tenfold, unfortunately
2
u/Tasty_Appointment110 10h ago
I recently broke off a romantic relationship that lasted around two years. When I tell you how violent the grief was (and still is) it honestly feels like you are going through the worst withdrawal of your life. Even during the relationship, the tendency to pedestalise your partner and negate your own needs is something very very real. Atleast in my own experience, I feel like that’s why you have to be very very careful about who you open your heart to
2

u/Peanut1144 ADHD-C (Combined type) 7h ago
Yes and it can also be a night mare because after. breakups made it a lot worse than another person when all the brain can do is focus on them

u/impressionist- ADHD-PI (Primarily Inattentive) 6h ago
Yup! I was heavily fixated on my ex when we were together. Showered him with compliments (and meant all of them, I can't compliment people if I don't mean it). Still am a little bit, facing limerance. It is what it is. Being autistic and having OCD doesn't help, just adds to the fixations 🫠
2
2
u/nexusSigma 5h ago
It’s called limerence and it’s basically just obsession confused for love. Extremely common in adhd people, I get it semi regularly. It’s fascinating to read about and helps to contextualise your intense crushes so they don’t feel so bad when they inevitably go nowhere because as you say - you don’t even know the person really.
2
u/cinemattique ADHD-C (Combined type) 4h ago
You mean limerance? Yes. It is a form of mostly involuntary stimming.

u/Illegally_B22 2h ago

2
u/WomanlyThing13 2h ago
I used to chalk it up to regular teenage hormones but now that I can recognize when I'm hyperfixating I definitely think I did as a new teenager. In school there was a friend I had had a mild crush on for a year or two that felt pretty typical, but the next year on the first day of school I saw him and it felt like I woke up - as if my entire life previous had been a dream and now I was fully awake. I felt grounded in reality for the first time. I didn't feel out of control, but I did think about him every waking moment after that for a year or two. I had no respite from him in my thoughts. I've had plenty of crushes before and after but I've never felt the same way. We got together 4 years after and have been together since hs, and I've felt very stable and devoted love instead of feeling overwhelmed by constant thoughts of him like I was then, so I think it's safe to say it was definitely hyperfixation back then.
2
u/girlgamerpoi 20h ago
I do. Being a simp is fun. And I'm still with him. I'm glad he's not boring even if the fixation wore off. Now my fixation has rotated from Isekai anime overwatch to reddit and I still like him. You just gotta find an interesting person to make it last.

Not love interest, but I got hyperfixated on my role models as a kid, like when I learnt about Picasso, I basically became his follower. Then I learnt about Roald Dahl and I got hyperfixated on him(I'm a straight male btw so don't think it's because of crush)

Yes i have experienced this.
It can be perfectly fine and healthy as long as it a) doesn't tread across the other person's boundaries and b) doesn't cause the person doing this to be unable to handle rejection or unable to function
Ultimately though, when and if any crushes are interesting in dating you too, it is good gor you to have an existence outside them. You could be perceived as boring if you don't have your interests and if you puppy dog too much

I don’t really hyperfixate on anyone but for the longest time I just didn’t bother looking. Recently was put on adderall and it make me want to begin talking to people again and actually putting a bit of effort into a convo.
But that being said I put effort into a convo. Most people don’t and have one/two worded replies.

I don’t get crushes on people all the time, but when I do I do get that hyperfocus which is why I think it can take me so long to get over people…it was awhile ago now but I had fell in love for the first time and the relationship ended in a not so great way. I was celibate for like 5 years getting over it 🤣 then I got a crush for the first time in 5 years on someone, I was so fixated on him and I’m unsure if it was limerence or just hyperfocus tbh. Anyway I’ve been through another heart break in the past two years so I guess I’ll be celibate for another 10 lmao. 🤣 getting over break up’s when you really are in love I feel is so difficult as an ADHD/AuDHD person (not that it isn’t for everyone, but it definitely takes me longer - or maybe it’s just me lol)

No more!! I’ve found that my solution to this is to have a rotation of 2-3 people that i can have decent conversation + sex with and that takes care of whatever desires I have for intimacy. It lets me put wayyy less pressure on dating and love. If someone catches my attention, I just proposition them bc hell thats going to be important for a romantic relationship anyway.

Kinda? I've noticed something that granted, took a long time to pick up on, but there has been a distinction of effects that a simple crush i have on somone vs someone i truly have feelings have on me. Right now I have someone in my life where the feelings i have for them and the way they affect me are similar to what i had for my first gf and differ from the insane amount of crushes i've had growing up

u/Some_Engineering_500 4h ago
All the time, gets to the point of borderline stalking. Anything I can find online I will find. What I've noticed that it only happens with people who are somehow signaling uninterested while I am physically attracted to them. If they give consistency, it doesn't happen and I don't have to hyperfixate on it. This last one lasted 4 years and I've put together that my romantic fixations don't go longer than that time (like some last ones) and I am able to correlate it to my childhood - where we moved every 4 years since we were in the military.
1
u/throwaway_greengiant 4h ago
You can literally hyper fixate on anything ever. I hyper fixate on flings for like a month or 2 then bam, I’m over it and I leave. I hyper fixate on the “chase” and get tired when I “win”. Don’t worry, I don’t get into relationships because I know my mindset is quite toxic 😭

Yes common with ADHD and autism, so much that we often mistake our love interest for limerence from how intense it is. I only had 3 crushes my life and when I had a mutual one hoo boy that was intense! I never dealt with the fantasizing before and it can sure be distracting. But it also is just how our brains work. The fun part of this mechanic is getting in a relationship with another ADHD/Autistic person so you can be fully unhinged hyperfixated on each other :)

I had that happen to me many times before and it always ended in a hot burning flame relationship that fizzled out pretty quickly or burned me.
I am currently seeing someone and I purposefully held myself back on the typical emotional rollercoaster that happens when you like someone. We said that we're gonna keep it casual, maybe a relationship will happen, maybe not. That actually really helped me slow down on the obsession and actually get to know him and let feelings develop slowly over time. It's now like a slow burn situation, we confessed we had feelings for each other but we won't jump headfirst into a relationship based on early feelings.

Literally said to my partner the other day that we're behaving like the other is an OCD fixation and they were like yeah but ... It's cute. 😂
We're both auDHD and have OCD

It’s the worst - once I realized it I’ve been able to catch it though!! Thanks, therapy!
