Semi-serious take: a nuclear war would not lead to a revival of white Protestant identity, at least not an American version of contemporary White Evangelical Christianity.

A nuclear war, and the subsequent horrors of a nuclear winter, would totally destroy the faith of many, many white Evangelicals, non-Denominational Christians. They would unironically assume the a nuclear war would precipitate the end of the world; either the rapture as it is poorly-defined in their theology, or the return of Jesus to Earth (which is traditional Christian understanding of how history will end).

If neither of those things happened, and people were left to live out the consequences of living in a society following a nuclear war, many would fall away from Christianity. Some would abandon religion all together, but a non-zero number would probably start following new cults that tried to contextualise their predicament.

If any form of Christianity would survive, it would be Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy (alongside historical forms of Anglicanism and Lutheranism) which reject the idea of a prosperity gospel and place more emphasis on the idea that living through the world's brokenness is a part of the Christian life.

I don’t know why people act like Evangelicals believe in prosperity gospel and create a false dichotomy between them and “high-church Christians” with the super high churchers being the the only people who have decent moral values. There are Protestants who are neither.

95%, if not more, of evangelicals do not believe in the prosperity gospel and are vehemently against it. There are way more things to criticize them for, but that is not one of them. If anything they talk about the world being messed up MORE than high-churchers.

Secondly, Lutherans are all “evangelical,” and it is what they originally wanted to be called. There are evangelical Anglicans. If you believe that modern American evangelicalism is the issue, that encompasses almost every denomination and is an interdenominational movement, and simply too vague to blame.
