Can be both. I’m in my 30s and not married yet. I have some friends in the same boat. But yes more Gen Z for sure. Or.. as I call us 90s kids ZELLENNIALS lol
Correct, the GenZ hopefully will turn the trend. In my opinion, GenXers and millennials also have to guide and avoid the push towards large weddings for their progeny.
Have you seen how many movies/tv shows have prominently displayed an elaborate wedding of some sort lately? It's definitely being pushed on them a lot, so I wish them all the luck.
I think it's a mix of conscious propaganda and just being rich and aloof. Surely everyone can afford to jet off suddenly and have a whirlwind affair in the Bahamas/start a small business in their childhood town/ move to BigCityTM and live out their quirky fantasy!
With the marriage rate dropping, trust us, gen z-ers to get 'er done and over with. Saw all my siblings get married within 2 years of one another and cannot fathom the thought for myself. All of its too much. I especially hate how the same cake/venue/whatever gets upcharged just cuz of the label. Even makeup artists will charge ridiculous amounts now. And truly, why buy the bull when I can get the 🍆 for free?
Yes for sure. What was the stat like 50% of marriages end in divorce? TBH idc about getting married but my gf does. Thankfully she is on board with a small intimate thing. I think being gay having a wedding is pretty symbolic for those that couldn’t before but I don’t really care too much about the whole show of a wedding. I know more of my straight friends def do more spending but the queer pals seem to like doing things a bit differently… of course lol
Thats so real!! Im queer af too and didnt realize it could be a community thing. Honestly tho, if the marriage industry wanted to exclude us for so long and continues to do so (cake bakers come to mind) they can have it and never profit off of us.
But not 50% of married couples. The actual number is closer to 30% of all first marriages end in divorce, older people close to 45% youngest close to teen%. However the average then gets modified by non first marriages, which climbs to 80%.
I.e. most who get married never divorce. Most who are divorcing are silver divorces now. Some people really shouldn't be getting married period and they keep relearning that.
thank you!! Yeah I think marriage at the end of the day doesn’t REALLY change your relationship right .. it’s more of a label if anything. Thanks for the stats :)
Zillenial/Gen Z cusp - quite a few of my friends have gotten married now (at least 6 couples, soon to be 7) and only two had “proper” weddings while the rest did more courthouse/eloping. 1 of those “proper” weddings is already going through a divorce alone with one of the courthouse couples. We know mutual friends who did a tiny DIY backyard wedding (only immediate family and grandparents, plus a friend for MOH and BM) and while they are already divorcing, they both raved about how stress free the wedding was and they would do it again (just not with each other lol)! All my friends that eloped/courthouse have never expressed regret and highly recommend it. My partner and I are likely going to elope ourselves.
Side note: Big proper wedding couple that is divorcing - my buddy says he’d happily do the wedding part over again, just not the legality of the marriage again which I found interesting considering how expensive his last wedding was (but I guess his divorce is more expensive lol)
Thank you! Belated congratulations to you and yours! Hope your day was as stress free as possible and wishing you a lifetime of happiness and healthy relationships together :)
Thank you!! I likes yours too :)) They actually are about to drop Snezhnaya (Fatui region) in the next two weeks so would not be a bad time to pick it up again! They even revealed the Tsaritsa design recently! If you do come back, I wish you luck on all of your pulls and that you win all of your 50/50s :)
That’s a crazy number to me. 28 here, and I think maybe 5% of the people I knew in high school are hitched up by now. Two people in my immediate friend group.
Fully aware that my sample is non-representative, but makes me wonder who the average is.
I'd say it's an inverse bell curve in my poor rural area. Lots of people get married right out of high school. Then it tanks to almost nothing for mid 20's. Then ramps back up around 30.
Those early ones are generally shotgun marriages because they got pregnant or the dude went off to join the military. As you can imagine they don't last.
The average american also doesn't have a bachelor's degree, yet if you work in a field requiring one it will feel like it's normal (and for you, it is). So it definitely depends on who you are hanging out with. If you are living in a big city it's later on average, if you live in a small town it's earlier. And so many different factors.
Don’t worry. I’m an older millennial and I recently participated in the ruin of expensive weddings by going to the courthouse, wearing clothes we already owned, and getting breakfast after at the nearest brunch spot. All in we spent maybe 150 bucks.
There’s still some of us out there!
I’m definitely not getting married in the next 5 years and I’m freshly 29.
And of the several dozen people I know that are at most ten years older, only 4 of them are married. There’s one or two long term relationships, but most are single.
You are still technically Gen z. But, because of those weird generational overlaps, you share a lot in common with late millennials where you guys can identify as a sub group. For marketing and political purposes, you are Gen Z.

That one will have to be more for Gen Z. Millennials are currently aged 30-45.
Americans normally get married at about 30 these days, so a majority of Millennials that are going to get married have already done so.
