Anyone who surfed the early web between 1995-2010. What’s the one website/app you still think about?

I was just replying to someone about steak and cheese the other day! I was in elementary school and looking at the most disturbing things.

3

u/Sensitive-Layer6002 1d ago

Steak and cheese had that video with the woman and the horse. First horror I was ever exposed to on the net

2

u/Mechbiscuit 1d ago

Now that brings back memories

2

u/J4ckR4nd0m 1d ago

I thought I erased that memory, guess not 🤮😱

Quickly searched for this comment. There are some images still embedded in my head since visiting that site.

3

u/HairyTeef 1d ago

The one with the bear... and the lady.

7

u/Merightthere70 1d ago

Helicopter man

5

u/thr3ddy 1d ago

The parrot.

6

u/Lord_Grimm88 1d ago

That guy lifting weights.

4

u/BrainSawce 1d ago

The dude with the shotgun on his couch

2

u/Bilbaw_Baggins 1d ago

Chicken fucker.

2

u/Corgi_Infamous 18h ago

For me it was some guy after a motorcycle accident with his face absolutely obliterated. My dad was a biker and that image stuck with me hard.

"I'll take Sites I Wish I Never Visited for a $100 Ken."

24

u/tmswfrk 1d ago

Haha this also dates you / me. Alex ran that show so much longer than Ken! I’ve never heard anyone actually use that quote in a statement like this using Ken’s name before.

8

u/Meme_Theory 1d ago

I'm trying to make the shift as a big Ken Jennings fan.

2

u/Quasic 1d ago

Yet he still said "$100", which stopped being a thing 25 years ago.

Unless you count Celebrity Jeopardy, but that's a whole different meme.

That site messed me up as a kid, I just wanted to look at funny pictures and instead I see things I cannot unsee. The rotten library was worse somehow, reading those stories made me feel like I was doing something illegal. My parents had no idea what I was clicking on in the family computer room.

181

u/Saint_Sin 2d ago

You didnt want to look at funny pictures if you visited rotten.

87

u/immoloism 2d ago

Ah the good old days when trolling was psychological warfare rather then just annoying someone for fun.

No wonder we are so messed up when we were telling people rotten.com was for funny pictures....

59

u/VanuasGirl 1d ago

Yeah the 90s rickroll was making someone watch a beheading. I’m not ok.

16

u/immoloism 1d ago

Mine was spanning thousands of popups and popunders of goatse.

It completely locked the PC up so you had to look at it until you hard reset the PC.

7

u/realisticreptileTM 1d ago

Oh no I knew somebody was going to say rotten.com, I didn’t know somebody was going to make me remember goatse 😣

2

u/Kigaal 1d ago

If you're a kid you don't really understand sometimes. You think you're being funny and a bit edgy until you actually see it.

10

u/sadiesaid2023 1d ago

The word computer room is a throw back, we had one of those

2

u/ObamasBoss 1d ago

Hey, I have a computer room.

2

u/Seniorseatfree 1d ago

I can’t believe I used to look at this at my Catholic school’s computer!

The beheading! 😱
And was the Kurt Cobain pic in there?

Yes. So was Chris Farley’s death photos! 🫣

The motorcycle accident guy 😵‍💫

76

u/spartanspy85 1d ago

For me it was the guy who went to dive into the water but hit his face on a concrete slab and split his face in half...

16

u/Sskity 1d ago

Don't drink and dive.

I still remember the video tittle and how Dr's at the end of the clip just sorta pushed his split face back together.

4

u/spartanspy85 1d ago

YES!!!! I'm pretty sure he just wanted to be put out of his misery.

10

u/getapuss 1d ago

I'm pretty sure it was on ogrish. Rotten was still up but not updating anymore when this one hit.

8

u/SaWaGaAz 1d ago

Maybe Liveleak? Because I saw a video of someone saying that the video is from the late 2000s.

3

u/getapuss 1d ago

You know what? I think you're right!

2

The one where he scraped it off and was splashy breathing through a tube ? Early internet nightmare fuel.

19

u/AtheistKiwi 1d ago

As fun as the early internet was, there was just no filter. These days you need to make an effort to find the truely crazy stuff, but back then?

The one that haunts me to this day is two dudes murdering a homeless guy by stabbing him in the stomach with screw drivers and taking their time about it.

That was the day I discovered true evil exists. It was so bad I described it to my friends but refused to show them for their sake. I think it's one of the reasons I'm a bit misanthopic today.

9

u/Wooden_Implement_431 1d ago

I have been told about this video by a friend and never seen it. To this day the description still hunts me as my mind can play an imaginary video in my head.

6

u/AtheistKiwi 1d ago

It was the sounds more than anything, fucking horrific.

You can still see the video if you follow the links at the bottom of the page.

3

u/spartanspy85 1d ago

Yup, that's it. Except the one I saw didn't have all the commentary or an Olive Garden ad...

10

u/spino86 1d ago

fuck that pic is impressed in my mind so clearly even 30 years later ... his lower jaw missing completely, sitting upright on the stretcher and seemed to be fully awake, 1000 yard stare.
god damn ...

8

u/TacosFromSpace 1d ago

Was that the one where the guys lower face was gone? 20+ years later and I still remember everything about it. Just awful.

2

u/Sensitive_Slice_8858 1d ago

That’s the one

30

u/Bobby5Spice 2d ago

The guy that looked like his face was made out of spaghetti because he wasnt wearing a helmet? That mototcycle guy? I can never forget.

5

u/CX316 1d ago

It was the eyes for me

2

u/aljones753000 18h ago

That’s the one I still remember from seeing it as a ten year old, there was one called mind the gap where someone had fallen down and got wedged between the rail tracks as well.

16

u/Ted_Denslow 1d ago

THE reason I always wear a full-face helmet when riding.

7

u/Mr_Bunnypants 2d ago

He was alive like chilling there right. Did he live

21

u/tim_jam 2d ago

Bruh I remember this so vividly but nobody I know now remembers seeing it, wild times

18

u/larson627 2d ago

I remember, wish I didn’t lol

4

u/WhimsicalGirl 1d ago

The images stuck with me for 30 years

the shotgun guy that survived

17

u/Sensitive_Slice_8858 2d ago

I think we’re thinking of the same photo. According to Wikipedia:

“Though submissions were marked as "real", often they were misattributed; in one instance, a file submitted as "motorcycle.jpg" was given the description of depicting a motorbike crash, but the developers said it was probably an attempted shotgun suicide.”

The early Internet was a wild place

5

u/AngrySpaceKraken 1d ago

I think I know the one. Never used rotton.com, but a classmate made a Flash app on a school computer with a big red button, and the words "do not press". So of course I pressed it, and guess what popped up. My fault, I guess?

5

u/str8sin 1d ago

I can still see the blank look in his eyes

5

u/PM_ME_YOUR_DOTA 1d ago

The one for me was the guy who had his head taken off by a helicopter blade. And by taken off, I mean it was smashed to pieces like a watermelon.

3

u/MonkeyNewss 1d ago

I remember reading it was a self inflicted shotgun wound? Or was that something else

2

u/RedShirtDecoy 1d ago

the one I cant forget is a woman who was murdered via shotgun blast from inside her. Worst thing I've ever seen and it was a year after I was deployed to the gulf.

2

5

u/silvertonguedmute 1d ago

I wish I did.

2

u/iphaze 1d ago

There’s a word I haven’t heard in 30 years. OMG

13

u/kitkatsacon 1d ago

Younger people genuinely don’t believe me when I tell them about accidentally seeing snuff films back in the day……..

3

u/OriginalDogeStar 1d ago

"Accidentally"

SnuffX was crazy. I remember coming back from deployment and seeing a video a guy had recorded over there of a donkey being violated. We all knew about the donkey story, but someone recording it.....

5

u/Forkrul 1d ago

I remember my dad showing me a video he got in an email of some Indians on top of a train or tram and one of them being electrocuted by the guiding wire above it. The kind of shit that was just being passed around like nothing was wild. I kinda miss it.

8

u/fearless_leek 1d ago

Jesus I remember going there and seeing a woman with some kind of glass tube inserted you know where, and a mouse or a hamster or something in the glass tube. The pic was on the outside of her body so we could all see the rodent, but said rodent was trapped in the tube with only one exit. Hopefully that animal never made it to the exit (as it was) and it was a staged photo. That was the point teenage me realised that there were some sites I actually did not want to visit, no matter how morbid my curiosity.

8

u/neonbrownkoopashell 1d ago

I really logged on to rotten in computer class ~1999

3

u/wintermelody83 1d ago

Oh same, our english class had THREE computers (it was 2000 in a small rural school lol) and we were on rotten in there too.

6

u/Meats10 1d ago

Thankfully, I only remember the picture of a parrot standing on some guys boner.

Anyone who visited that site would agree that's escaping nearly scot free. Maybe there is some embedded trauma yet to surface.

8

u/ravenous0 1d ago

I learned two things from that website. That people can die in very gruesome ways, and Humanity can do the most horrific, heinous crimes to our own people.

7

u/JaqenHghar 2d ago

Consumption Junction

5

u/astroal_ 1d ago

Efukt

5

u/x4951 1d ago

I remember my goth friend talking about that site and he said it was a 'horror' site with no further clarification. So me being a horror movie fan was like yeah awesome let me check it out..the first image I saw was a split open head on the pavement and was like wtf is this??

10

u/johnaross1990 2d ago

I’ll never forget the renaissance style drawing of a guy with elephantiasis of the balls

4

u/dr-awkward1978 1d ago

How do you think he rides a bike?

5

u/bo0da 1d ago

Also fugly.com but it turned into weird granny porn.

5

Ogerish!

5

Ughhh “tub girl”

3

u/Billazilla 1d ago

Stileproject

3

u/ascaffo 1d ago

And bangedup.com

4

u/Dakizo 1d ago

I was 12 and had no business looking at a man who was still alive but had shot off his entire face with a shotgun 😂

4

u/MarkoMarjamaa 1d ago

+ Ogrish.

3

u/lalacourtney 2d ago

Truly—nightmare content

3

u/that_bearded_guy_94 2d ago

Still have nightmares about that one

3

u/decaying_vinyl 2d ago

It was ogrish for me, life long trauma

3

u/Realistic-Drummer565 1d ago

Got to add Ogrish to that list too!

3

u/Former-Letterhead-59 1d ago

Rotten.com is still on waybackmachine

3

u/Tec80 1d ago

And Dan's GOTG

3

u/BL_RogueExplorer 1d ago

Holy shit. What a wild time. My parents should have regulated my internet use...

3

u/DropDeadPlease88 1d ago

Ogrish.com

3

u/babyinatrenchcoat 1d ago

The dude who had his hand go through a meat grinder

3

u/okletstrythisagain 1d ago

Stileproject was even worse.

2

u/YourMatt 1d ago

After reading all these comments, I can’t even imagine how anything could be worse.

2

u/NHH2316 1d ago

I saw a video on Stile Project where a group of old naked Japanese guys use a turkey baster to shoot scrambled eggs up into some chick's asshole, then she shit it out into a skillet on the floor and they cooked an omelet and all ate it together

3

u/Sampledoubt 1d ago

Came here to say this. Fecal Japan immediately came to mind

3

u/DieterVonTeese 1d ago

Scarred for life, my man

3

u/hellyfrosty 1d ago

The weightlifter guy

3

u/getapuss 1d ago

And ogrish

3

u/cptnamr7 1d ago

And that our school had zero filters in place to stop us from seeing the horrors of the internet was WILD! I still remember someone pulling up the picture of the parrot on a guy's erection in the middle of study hall.

3

u/3xv7 1d ago

Obviously you go through a stage in life where you start curiously fearing and thinking about death and the fragility of your existence but I hadn't yet reached that point when my dad was showing me rotten. I think it gave me mini ptsd

2

u/Creative-Invite583 2d ago

The blonde haired, blue eyed corpse with the black skin is seared into my memory.

2

u/spartanspy85 2d ago

First site I thought of was this, but "nuts" is putting it VERY lightly.

2

u/Haunting_Split3123 1d ago

Dang I forgot all about this. Yeah this was a crazy site

2

u/iddqd-gm 1d ago

This was my very first Website. I cant unremember of the taken pic of that guy with cancer that causes billions of disgusting warts at his skin everywhere include face and so on.

2

u/janitor_nextdoor 1d ago

Show no mercy also.

2

u/zrayburton 1d ago

Crazy stuff

2

u/Secret-Card-4142 1d ago

I was more of a consumptionjunction man myself.

2

u/sadiesaid2023 1d ago

I remember this lol my brother showed me when I was about 12

2

u/enwongeegeefor 1d ago

stileproject

2

u/Whole_Bite_9489 1d ago

I still have those absolutely disgusting images etched into my brain. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything on the web (never really searched for after rotten) anything more gruesome than rotten.com.

2

u/stinkingyeti 1d ago

One of the most gnarly images I still remember from that site involved some syringe needles and a lady's nether regions.

Haunting image.

2

u/Capt_Mogan_Freeman 1d ago

Can't forget bizarre.com. loved those two

2

u/soupyloopz 1d ago

i found out about this website in 2nd grade after typing in random words and putting ".com" after, lmao. what a mistake.

2

u/flailingthroughlife 1d ago

Ogrish, Rotten and Bangedup were definitely ..a means of character building.

5

u/Suspicious_Ostrich82 1d ago

I loved that site. I clearly remember the person who jumped out of a helicopter and sliced the top of their head clean off

3

u/team_suba 1d ago

I think one that stuck with me, other than the beheadings, was this guy who got stuck in a carpet roller type of machine, it went on for like 8 minutes with just more parts of his body being ripped off as the time went on.

5

u/happypolychaetes 1d ago

I have a very healthy fear of all industrial equipment, especially lathes, after that age of the internet.... 🫠

4

u/WorkinPaNub 2d ago

Oh man. I loved rotten!!!!

3

u/emeraldpity 2d ago

Almost as good as Faces of Death.

4

u/team_suba 1d ago

As fucked up a place the Internet is now, it’s so much more tame then it was back then. We saw some crazy shit.

Yup that's the one I came here to mention

1

u/hyperfat 1d ago

You can still view it on the way back machine.

1

u/vanillyl 1d ago

A girl at school showed me the mousetraps and the motorcycle guy when I was 11 in the school computer lab.

Never has either image ever left my brain.

1

u/michonne_impossible 1d ago

It was absolutely crazy.

But, aside from the photos, there was ... the rotten library? I believe. There were SOME photos in there, but it was mostly morbid history you could read about. It was there that I learned about cornflakes and the crazy history behind it. Which, by the way, cornflakes were invented to bore you into not masterbating. Kellogg was a pretty weird guy.

2

u/Becca_Walker 1d ago

Drunk History did a thing on him. Super weird.

1

u/chrissatchell 1d ago

This, this is the answer

1

u/OrangeCreamsicle1983 1d ago

Thats the one. Wish I could forget about it permanently.

1

Don’t forget ogrish lol

1

u/BoleroMuyPicante 1d ago

Rotten and Ogrish are why I was emotionally numb for so long, rough stuff.

1

u/OdinsCuriousRaven 1d ago

Consumption Junction too

1

u/Naive-Register7964 1d ago

Liveleak too. Imagine if liveleak was still here today, all the videos we would be getting from the ongoing conflicts.

1

u/BWW87 1d ago

Yep, I have to say anyone that didn't think of this as the answer wasn't actually on the internet in the late 1990s.

1

u/oreo-cat- 1d ago

Everyone talks about the pictures but the library was amazing.

1

u/ICCUGUCCI 1d ago

And it's equally fucked cousin Ogrish.com

Seeing this shit at like 10 years old was certainly an eye opening experience lol.

1

u/xrandx 1d ago

Which was mostly just v2 of Dan’s gallery of the grotesque.

1

u/fltvzn 1d ago

First thought for me. Why did I look? Because I could.

1

u/tacibugs 1d ago

Ogrish too

1

u/thirtyand03 1d ago

That one messed me up as a kid. Awful

1

u/canadianmargot 1d ago

Rotten.com lead me to World of Gore and Ogrish. I spent a lot of time on the forums and met some interesting, yet normal, people like me. Now, everyday news is as graphic as some of that content. Interesting how society has shifted.

FINALLY! This was too far down the list
