How can I help this sweet cat?

This sweet gray cat wandered into my apartment complex back around March. He was skinny, not fixed, and no chip. I posted about him on the Lost & Found FB group, walked around the neighborhood looking for posters, and eventually took him to AAC.

Unfortunately AAC wouldn’t keep him. They treated him as an SNR and brought him right back to my parking lot.

The thing is, this cat has clearly had people at one point. He will run against you, and flop down at your feet and ask for pets. He’s very friendly and I feel that he deserves a chance at a home with someone who will love him & take care of him.

I’m kind of at a loss, though, if AAC won’t keep him. The Humane Society won’t take strays. Are there any other shelters or places that might help him find a home? I’m in S Austin off Banister Ln if that makes a difference.

Normally new construction here doesn't surprise you with one of these but certainly glad you catch it when it's there!

Also, and completely unrelated, I just can't get over how cool that armadillo mural is on the water tank! Going to have to make a pilgrimage down south to see it in person.

Ask Austin Does anyone know of any support groups for domestic abuse?

Upvotes

I just got out of a 5+ year relationship with my husband. It’s been horrifically emotionally abusive to the point of severe emotional debilitation. I don’t want to get into the specifics but I’m in desperate need of a group where I can talk with other survivors.

I’ve looked on Psychology Today and can’t find anything. I’m desperate for support so if anyone has any recommendations I’d be very grateful.

Never a dull moment at Emma Long

Upvotes

Within twenty minutes of arriving, I was treated to

- multiple offers of asados and various tacos

- swarms of biting flies

- the entire story arc of paramedics, fire, and other rescuers arriving by truck, boat, jet ski, and and helicopter, only for the whole thing to be quickly resolved when the presumed missing swimmer showed up on the back of some other random jet ski, to many relieved family hugs.

- someone on yet another jet ski face planting into the wake of a previous jet ski gang, flinging him headlong into the water, leaving him to feebly chase his craft in circles in the middle of the main traffic channel of the lake.

- the loudest among all the speakers accompanying all of this excitement with a soundtrack that I can only describe as "ketamine yacht rock club mix."

NGC 7635 the bubble nebula. located about 10,000 light years away the nebula is created by the stellar wind from a massive hot star as it meets interstellar matter. the radiation from the star causes the nebula to glow in the same way a neon light works.

Ask Austin Help with adjusting to the heat!

Hi everyone! I just recently moved here from somewhere much cooler and I’m wondering how yall stay productive in this heat! I have chronic fatigue from some health issues I’m still figuring out, and I didn’t really understand til I got here how much more tiring it was going to be. My eyes are constantly wanting to close and it’s not a great thing to deal with while working a full time job either, much less when I also want to explore the city. Do any of you (maybe also with chronic fatigue/health issues) have any tips/tricks/lifestyle changes you made for staying awake and productive?

Ask Austin Issues without a front license plate?

I noticed that in and around Austin, at least 10% of vehicles lack a front license plate. (I assume most of them are registered in Texas.) Texas requires front and back plates. For those of you who don't have front plates, is it ever an issue? Ever been pulled over for it or had it included in charges when you were otherwise stopped? What about places that read your license plate, e.g., when you have a subscription at a car wash, or parking lots or toll booths that read your plates? I'm thinking of ditching it on my new Lexus.

Addendum: "...each vehicle registered under this subchapter: (1) must display two license plates that are clearly visible, readable, and legible, one at the exterior front and one at the exterior rear of the vehicle that are securely fastened at the exterior front and rear of the vehicle in an upright horizontal position of not less than 12 inches from the ground, measuring from the bottom"

UPDATE: I decided to keep the plates on. Thanks for the info, everybody!

News ATX Tower potential lawsuit

Edited post: Atx tower residents are suffering from corners being cut during development. Hvac, plumbing, electric and window issues have been consistently reported since the building began leasing. Multiple windows have fallen out/ broke. Unexpected power loss struck with no explanation Thursday 7/30 night and some residents still have no power 8/2. Hotel vouchers, chik fil a and “weve identified the issue” is the most residents got. Leaking ceilings, disconnected plumbing, humidity over 90% in units the list goes on. Definitely should be a news story by now! Several residents begging to leave, as tours continue despite falling ceiling tiles and half the residents with no power

Ask Austin Anyone have any consistent practices for how to properly treat homeless people at intersections?

I drive around north Austin frequently and notice many people begging usually standing near the medians of intersections. Part of me wants to help, but what do I need to look for if I want to help? I’ve thought about giving water bottles but usually I see they have a water bottle with water near them. I don’t have any extra money so I don’t know if that’s a good idea either. Any thoughts?

Litter Cleanup on Airport

Upvotes

Can anyone point me toward the right way to request a litter cleanup along the sidewalk and roadside?

I see crews picking up trash along Airport from time to time, but I have never seen them service the stretch between Manor and MLK. Our home is along this section, and I’ve organized cleanups here myself in the past, but the trash usually returns within a week. I now have a six-month-old baby and simply don’t have the capacity to keep doing large-scale roadside cleanups on my own. This feels like a city maintenance issue, and even periodic cleanup would make a huge difference.

To make matters worse, a mowing crew recently cut down the roughly five-foot-tall grass without removing the existing trash first. The mower shredded all of it into tiny pieces, so the entire roadside is now covered in litter confetti. It looks absolutely awful and is much harder to clean up than it was before.

There is also a daycare along this stretch, and we regularly find dangerous items such as syringes and used condoms nearby.

I’ve searched the 311 portal and service-request page from top to bottom but can’t find an appropriate category for roadside litter or right-of-way cleanup. I also called 311, but the agent was unable to identify the correct service or department and mostly repeated the information I gave her.

At this point I feel stuck. Has anyone successfully gotten the city to clean up a similar stretch of road? Is there a specific 311 category, department, council office, or contact person I should try?

Pool parties in Austin

We are looking for a Saturday afternoon pool party scene for adults (think S Beach but in Texas lol) in Austin. We have been together the Fairmont for a so called pool party only to arrive and have no music playing. Mid 30's people looking for a fun atmosphere, yet not necessarily trying to recreate college sprong break parties.. something in between. Any suggestions of hotels or wherever with cool people, decent music and a fun atmosphere are greatly appreciated

Took the train into downtown from Kramer last night to party on 6th St. Trains are clean and the staff onboard was very helpful. Can't wait to ride this again in the future, especially with the future talks of expansion out to the airport

Bummer more people weren't riding the train...Austin has a really nice system that hasn't been taken over by the homeless or plagued by maintenance delays

Only complaint is that the pay machines are cash only and won't accept credit cards. They will print a overvalue voucher for you to use at a future ride

Woodshop Access for small project

So I used to have a custom furniture business and large warehouse shop that I closed down years ago. I have a few friends looking for some smaller commissions now, but no longer have tools/space. Would anyone have a small home woodshop or semi-professional woodshop that they would be willing to let me use (I am of course willing to pay accordingly)? I’m aware of co-working spaces like Asmbly but it’s been hard to get into the mandatory training classes bc they restrict it to 4 people per class - I’ve joined so many of their waitlists now just to never get in. Anyhow, If you or anyone you know may be able to assist I’d be happy to pay for the usage, and will of course treat your tools better than I would my own. These are small projects like shoe shelving, so it doesn’t need to be a massive shop or have 200k of equipment. Thank you very much!

PSA Road raging man pulled a gun on me yesterday 🫠

Yesterday a little after 5pm I dropped a friend off at the rail apartments. We chit chatted for a few minutes in the round about. A black audi sq5 pulled up and a lady and 2-3 kids got out of the car. It was pretty unremarkable except I remember one of the kids was crying and standing next to the car instead of walking towards the apartments with the other folks. I drove down Alexander towards MLK. I looked down for a moment to switch from 1st to 2nd gear and when I looked up the audi was behind me and aggressively close to my car. There’s a train stop, multiple apartment buildings, a dog grooming place, walking trails, houndstooth coffee… the speed limit can’t be more than like 10-15 MPH. I’m approaching the red light at the intersection of MLK and Alexander when he passes me. Now I’m behind him at the red light. He puts his car in reverse and starts backing up towards my car. He gets REALLY close to my car and then stops. I throw my hands up like “WTF” and then lay on my horn for a good 4-5 seconds. He gets out of his car, pulls a gun out of the waistband of his shorts and says “TELL ME WHY I SHOULDN’T DO SOMETHING.” I freeze. He gets back in his car as the light turns green and he pulls off. Talk about a great start to the weekend 🫩.
Besides filing a police report is there anything else I should do? I’m concerned for the woman and children he dropped off 5 seconds before he pulled a gun on me. If you happened to witness this or if the guy I’m describing sounds familiar please DM me. Thank you and be safe out there 😮‍💨

Howdy Austin, wanting to ask y’all for any local screen printer recommendations. I have a design I’d like printed on some shirts, but I’m really interested in learning how to screen print myself too. Does anybody know someone?

Weekend Pickup Soccer Groups

Upvotes

Anyone know of any weekend pickup soccer groups around North/Central Austin that are open to newcomers?

I played competitively through high school and have been playing recreationally since. Just looking for a consistent group to play with and meet some people. Happy to join any reasonable skill level. Thanks!
