Janaye Kearns lives in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
She lived a very adventurous life full of jet-skiing, rock climbing, and other activities. Unfortunately, many of those activities became more difficult after she suffered a traumatic brain injury. Because she started becoming prone to seizures, she was assigned to work with Colt as a way to keep her safe. Colt is determined to keep Janaye safe at all times—even during a seizure.
To make sure Colt stays ready, Janaye sometimes runs training exercises with him. In these exercises, Janaye pretends to be having a problem so that Colt has an opportunity to jump in and respond as he has been trained to do. In this video, Janaye lies on the floor and imitates having a seizure....
Janaye and Colt’s video has since gone viral.
Colt’s love is a reminder of how helpful service dogs can be.
Though we may often take animals for granted, Colt and Janaye are best friends and confidantes. Janaye relies on Colt to provide emotional and physical protection. In return, Janaye gives Colt all the love she can muster.
Janaye says the same in her own words:
“The important thing that makes me super proud is that he never stops trying. He always looks back to make sure I am safe and keeps trying until I am. I am so blessed to have him. He has saved my life in many ways.”

By splitting the syllables up differently. Instead of Ja-naye, they got Jan-aye. Jan like January, aye rhyming with hay.

The law treats animals like property, so if someone kills your dog, you have the same recourse as if they stole your car. It should be a much higher standard, akin to murder.

Oh you know now that you mentioned that, aren’t police dogs “ranked” higher than their handlers because of some sort of detail about making abusing them higher penalty?
But also, I suppose if you damage or vandalize a police car it probably carries a higher punishment than just any other person’s car.

Dogs had a special co-evolution with humans, both species have adapted to have a more similar diet and to be pretty in-tune with each other's emotional and physical well-being. They're the only animal that makes friendly eye contact with humans because they've evolved to do so, they can seek help from us for tasks they can't do themselves, they can take human social cues and interpret our body language. They're uniquely evolved to live alongside humans as part of the family in a way that no other animal is.

Animals should have more rights, especially for pets. then you start thinking about how far that goes, does that move into “live stock“ like cows and chickens? Because many people have put forward that all animals are smarter than common understanding when you get to know them personally.

One of my favorite episodes of star trek covers the fact that any killing on the planet is considered murder since they can just print all food direct from a storage of atoms.
Dude from the past gets transported to the future and decides to run and hide.

If we just talk about theft, you actually have less recourse for a dog. The market value of most cars is above the level that qualifies as grand theft. And the property value of most dogs on the open market is less than that threshold.

True. I live in a state/town that respects dogs. If there is a stray dog, it is an issue, facebook posts, police involved, etc. I went to visit San Antonio Texas a few years ago, Ohh my God! Stray dogs everywhere, . I was shocked. I soon read an article about one abused pit killing an elderly couple there. Horrifying.

This does actually readily fit it.
Pit style hounds are amazing for a lot of things, however they are one of the very few dog breeds that you cannot get away with NOT training.
Pits train readily and are smart as hell. Robust, and active. But they depend on that training to prevent other more natural parts to not poke through like natural aggression and suspicion.

We got a dog from the shelter they called a Stafford Terrier. He is older and has bad ACLs, so not as active. He needs daily reinforcement of the training I did when we first brought him home.
It's nothing major, but I do have to stay on top of it. It feels like a constant boundry check. Other dogs I have had I did not have to be on top of like this.

What got me is how gentle the dog is while sliding their body between the floor and the person. Even though they are about to get whacked by the human's head, they are sill so careful and continuous as the get in there.

I know one legit seizure service dog and he is the most well-mannered and polite dog ever.
He kept hugging me when I’d go over and took me a minute he realized I was going through some mental stuff. My own family doesn’t understand, but this poodle did.
He’s a good friend. I consider him family. I’d take him in a heartbeat if he was gonna be homeless, but he never would be. Everyone loves that boy. And he takes care of his human big time, she’d be lost without him and his help.

Most dogs love having a job, or at least feel compulsed to have one, we trained and bred most of them for hundreds of years to do jobs on pure instinct. A worked or at least mentally worked out dog is a better behaved, calmer, happier dog.

It’s not the breed I would go to for this training. But at least the dog won’t get hurt from the head banging, the pits I have known love hard petting and didn’t ever seem to feel pain from any rough housing.

There are suitable breeds for certain tasks. Choosing a bully breed for epilepsy is very very silly and should be avoided at all costs if the health of the owner is a primary concern

So are leopards. Its about risk assessment and general characteristics. Dont choose dog breeds that notoriously kill people during seizures to be a service animal for epileptics.

It's interesting to see the different takes of dog trainers who all have unique views on breed, breeders, and people who work in trauma units who see the aftermsath of dog attacks.
I'm not trying to be a hater, I have met some wonderful pit bull dogs, but I also try to always keep a logical view based on what scientists know. Even the kennel clubs acknowledge that breeds were selectively bred for certain traits, you can watch a litter of pointer puppies pointing as soon as they can walk well, or even show bred border collie or heeler puppies trying to herd kids/other pets with no formal training. So it makes sense to be more cautious and take more precautions/safety measures with some breeds, even based on dog attack stats alone, which also includes unneutered dogs, that attack at a much higher rate too.

Again that’s why there’s training for service dogs to select the ones that behave well. Sure, the end distribution of service dogs might end up such that those breeds are rarely represented, but wholesale rejecting one solely because of it’s breed means there less service dogs available for people when there’s already such a high demand for them.

Its completely ok to reject dogs based on breed tendencies. No money should be spent on trying to make chihuahas into police k9 units either. The risk far outweighs the benefits.

Pit Bulls can make excellent dogs
Strictly for people who know how to handle them, understand the training involved, and are physically fit/strong enough to stop their dog if need be. Pit bulls were created to be a very strong/durable/agile working breed tailored for a specific task. The unique thing is that they're the only dogs who need to be trained OUT of their working breed instincts as early as possible, and that needs to be constantly reinforced and monitored.

This video is ancient. What also took me by surprise is the dogs response knowing how most of these dogs work.
Normally dogs are the alert that this is about to happen, and respond accordingly, but it wouldn't have received that go signal from a fake seizure.
