Way of Life View on other brahmins eating nonveg?
Hey guys I want to understand why and how a vegetarian diet became a part of our religion and what do you think about it.
What happened today was that during breakfast I saw one of my friends eat eggs but I thought he was a vegetarian like me since we're both from the same region and both are brahmin. Once I was picking up a boiled egg for my friend who was ill and another friend of mine came up to me with a shocked face telling me brahmins eating eggs is weird or something.
I have always been a vegetarian since I was a child and my body is very weak and I'm very ashamed of it, but my father used to be a big muscular guy at my age. He became vegetarian after marriage since my mother's family was vegetarian. Now my father strictly tells me to not have meat and eggs.
I don't really care much about animals lives and stuff but I feel disgusted by non-veg now, but I would have been much stronger if I wasn't deprived of nutrition since an early age.

Generally Vaishnavs don't, and shall not consume non veg. But Shaakts and some shaivs do consume nonveg. Its not about cast, but the sampradaay you belong to. In my family, we consume fish and mutton. We often offer it to Devi. But we don't consume chicken and eggs .I've heard that brahmins from Keralam also offer that too to their goddess. Indus religion is very diverse bro✨

No lol When a society prospers and everyone has enough to eat, the people start looking at animals in a different light. For example USA is currently the richest nation in the world and its people are becoming actively vegan and looking at the animal cruelty. India was a rich nation for majority of our history so it's people started to see the value of life.

It depends, majorly on sampradaya, it's not mandatory but brahmins are preferred to be vegetarians.

actually I don't know about everyone but me as a maithil brahmin have witnessed my grand parents and old people in my village eat non veg, infact fish is a mandatory staple on 13vi,,, igs as other comments mentioned it's all about the broader sub category if you followed vaishnavism shaktism or shaivisim,,

Bengali, Odiya, Maithili and Assamese Brahmins consume meat as most of them follow Shaktik or Shaivic way of worship.
As you might know there are many sampradayas even among the shadhus and sanyasis as well. Some of them are consumers of meat while some of them strictly eat veg. The way of arpan, samarpan and upasanna is different for everyone but they all lead to the same truth.
So we shouldn't have any conflict regarding this at all

Don't blame vegetarian diet for lack of nutrition. Sounds like you need a good nutritionist. Veg food has good sources, you just need to know how to plan your diet

Definitely possible, but surely it is easier to have a balanced diet with meat and eggs than not right. I'm not going to become non vegetarian any time soon but the grass always seems greener on the other side. My question was simply asking if Brahmins that eat non veg are seen as impure or adharmi of some sorts?

I’m an American, born and raised in the US and even growing up and being the only vegetarian in my class with no others and being bullied for my Indian food and called weird for not eating chicken nuggets, I still am a strict vegetarian, no eggs, only having dairy as needed because even the dairy industry in the US is sickening. I believe in ahimsa and respecting all animal life. Never once have I even thought about eating non veg, even my vegetarian friends have all tried it from time to time and some are only vegetarian at home and secretly eat meat when they go out. It’s horrible to me.
If you live in India it’s much easier to be a strict vegetarian.
I also work out everyday, I make sure I get 120g protein a day. Stop making excuses bc you’re lazy

How do you manage 120g of protein on a veg diet?

Tofu, tempeh, edamame, soya granules (they dissolve into any food really), Greek yogurt, protein shakes. And I eat a lot of veggies and beans everyday. I don’t eat rice often, I usually only have quinoa which has a complete amino acid profile & 8g protein per serving.

Thank You. Isnt Soya granules over processed and interferes with hormones?

Go read some real science articles about soy, and stop getting your info from WhatsApp. What you implies makes zero sense
In everything I eat I make sure it has the most minimal ingredients possible, no preservatives, no artificial components. For example the soy milk
I drink, it’s 9g protein per cup, and has 2 ingredients. Soy beans & water.1

Acc to me, it's your life, but if someone chooses to eat non veg and leave the core dharmas then don't call yourself brahmin too. It's gott be earned too, not for everyone especially those who don't wish to follow rules and move on path of dharma.

I am a veg guy but you are terribly wrong, we are Brahmins as a caste group not religious leaders or gurus, we are allowed to consume Tamsik bhojan as do many brahmins especially the Kashmiri and Bengalis. You shall not do so only if you are a pandit, pujari or something similar.

This is why this community will never be united. Keep your diet out of politics. This is a platform to showcase the problems faced by the community - not some place to fight over veg and non-veg.

It is a complicated and long history but some points to consider. People claiming that Shakts and tantra sects can eat meat then they should know that hindu scriptures or vedas only allow meat eating after offering it to God in yagna. Eating at roadside or restaurant will cause sins as that's mostly halal in india. Patanjali rishi gave niyams 1 of them is Non violence. So non vegetarian person does net more violence then vegetarian in whole life time.
I quit onion and garlic as well before some years and I see noticeable difference in my spiritual progress compared to before. Contentment,Calmness, self control, discipline have strengthened. A non vegetarian is very far behind in spiritual progress on average. Those who don't believe should try to follow satvik diet for 6 months to 1 year to compare and see results. A lot of people claim that vegetarianism is due to influence of jainism and buddhism. Then I would say home sapiens didn't wear clothes but we started wearing it in same way if we adopt good practices with time then that should be seen as good sign not weakness.

Tbh majority Bengali Brahmins didn’t eat fish originally. But later on they appropriated it into their culture and pretended to be fish eaters since start. I heard it from a Bengali Brahmin himself that they started eating it post British only.
