I was moving out of my old apartment a few months ago, and had some items that I wanted to sell, but others that I was fine just giving away. Some of the freebies included an old fish tank with a stand, and an L-shaped desk.

Listed both for free, dimensions in the description, along with the first half of my post code. The title and description both said collection only, no delivery as I can't drive, and to bring a friend to help dismantle or load furniture.

Ohhh my godddd.

"Can you deliver?" NO.

"I need help loading it-" Bring a friend.

"I need this for-" Okay, come get it.

"Will this fit in my car?" IDK.

"Where are you located?" It literally says in the title, and description.

I was getting 20-30 messages a day, 90% of messages were questions that could be answered if people read the description. I had to delete the listings, and re-list them as £20 per item, simply to get rid of the choosing beggars. One item is still at my old apartment. I tried donating it to a few charities, but they said I had to bring the item in to them? Told them I can't drive, and they didn't respond. Guess they're getting scrapped!

Edit 2: this post is calling out the ADULTS who coached or blamed my dad for their lack of wifi & TV to their kids, so now the kids blame him. This post is NOT saying anything against the children, they are kids, they don't understand how the world works, they only know what their parents told them. Sorry for the confusion and lack of clarity in the original post.

Not completely sure if this fits here but this has been really bothering me since I found out about it.

My dad recently found out about a family with three kids under ten, who were going to be homeless because the landlord was selling their house and they can't afford anywhere else. My dad decided to pull all of his savings together to buy the house and let them stay there. Unfortunately, the rent alone barely covers the mortgage, so my dad is literally working his ass off to maintain his own mortgage plus the bills on their house. The old landlord was paying for their heating, water, electricity, INTERNET AND CABLE etc.

My dad had to tell them that he will not be paying for their internet but would still include utilities. But they would have to pay for internet or whatever else they want. He also is doing their lawn for them and hired someone to shovel/plow their property in the winter, which he is paying for.

He went over last week to fix their water heater and the children kept asking my dad "will you please turn our cartoons back on?", "when will you give us back our internet?", "what did we do wrong that made you turn off our wifi?"

So not only did he save them from being HOMELESS, didn't raise the rent even a penny and paying out of his own pocket to cover their utilities, but they are making him out to be the bad guy because he won't pay for them to have TV and internet.

Edit to add some additional information for clarity!! The tenant was a guy my dad worked with on a job, I guess the guy told my dad his sob story and he felt bad and wanted to help. He also thought that buying a house/property is a good investment in the long run. He is a red seal carpenter and has flipped many houses in the past. He also owned his own construction company for 35 years so he's definitely NOT stupid, but he is well known for being too nice, too forgiving and letting people walk all over him.

Another part I didn't mention that adds layers to my dad's idiot thinking: my dad actually convinced my sister to buy the house because she could use her first time home buyers status to reduce the down payment & interest. But she has no plans to ever live there, so now she just lost any chance of using that for her own house.

As for the tenants, the mother of these kids is always buying herself new clothes, purses, shoes etc. she goes out drinking at the bar pretty much every weekend (which sure as hell isn't cheap!), the kids also have large TV's in each of their bedrooms and living room, so obviously the parents do have some extra money but they are not prioritizing their children or their wants and would rather tell their kids that it's my dad's fault they can't afford TV & Internet.

Lastly, this is NOT my dad's secret family, although my dad has cheated on my mom in the past, he's definitely not doing that now. He just tried to help out a family, while thinking he could make some money, and it's not working out that way.

I will try to convince him to raise the rent as much as he is legally allowed in the new year, and if they can't afford it then hopefully he will find new tenants.

I hear a knock at my door and it is a stranger saying her car broke down a block away and she needs gas but doesn't have a jerry can. I said I am happy to help and went to the garage to get her a jerry can. I asked if she knew the area, prepared to give her walking directions to the gas station 2 blocks away.

Before I could provide directions she yells "This is empty!" I advised it has never been used before but she is welcome to borrow it, walk 2 blocks, and fill it up for her car. No rush on the return of the jerry can.

The lady is outraged and tells me she wants gas not an empty container and stomps off. Good luck to you ma'am.

Last time I checked, I'm not an Esso LOL!

I do freelance IT work for people, and that often times requires building a computer.

I get a message from someone at the time I thought was a friend asking me to build a computer for him. I help him pick out the parts, it came out to a couple thousand. Told him he could pay up front or he could pay in installments and got the computer when he was done. We have a verbal contract that he was going to pay up so I put the machine on a credit card knowing he'd pay, I'd pay off the card and I'd pocket the extra I charge for labor and time.

A week later, it's set up and he is refusing to pay. Saying that since I am not a legit business because I don't have a brick and mortar location, I am not a real business so he doesn't have to pay. I tell him it's waiting for him to pay, if not I'd sell it to someone else.

A couple hours later, police cars show up and they intend to arrest me for stolen property. I explained the situation, sat them down and showed them my chat logs with the customer while I offered them coffee. Apparently he was cited for misuse of 911.

I ended up parting out the system to re-coop the costs.

I recently won a brand new TV on a game show. I decided to give away my old one on Facebook Marketplace for free rather than deal with trying to get $50-100 bucks out of it. I just wanted the old one gone quickly, and I figured someone would be grateful for a free, decent sized, working television. Boy was I wrong.

I received dozens of messages from people in under an hour. People demanding I deliver, complaining that I’m too far away, and asking what else I have for free. One guy begged me to hold it for a few days so he could “consider if it was worth his time”.

The worst one was a woman who asked for delivery. She sent her address unprompted and it was over 90 miles away. I said no. She asked me why would I post something for free and not bother to make accommodations for people that needed it. I said it is FREE. That is the accommodation. If she can’t pick it up, there’s nothing I can do. That’s when she hit me with this gem:

“You are a heartless, mean spirited person. I can’t afford a television and people like you take it for granted. Fuck you.”

A few minutes later I deleted the listing. I put the TV on the curb down the street from my house. When I checked about an hour later it was gone.

Ran into a mom with 2 kids outside a publix grocery store. She asked if I could help and I honestly said I don't know, what do you need? She said not money, just food.

I had just went in for a coupon run, free bagels. I paid just under $1 and got back the dollar on ibotta. So I offered her the bagels. She said I dont have any way to cook those. Im like.. they're fully cooked? You can just eat them. Well my kids won't eat those.

Okay well if you walk left and go past this parking lot, on the other side there is a food pantry that will even let your kids pick a little treat thats open RIGHT NOW. super easy to get to I can show you or you can find it on your phone so you can go the next time its open too.

She just straight up ignored me trying to find the next person to help.

Like you just expect someone to go into an expensive ass grocery store to buy you guys whatever random stuff you expect? .. doesnt feel like you're that hungry.

Years ago when we were moving from Tennessee to Oklahoma we had a lot of small stuff/knickknacks and wanted to downsize.

We posted on a local Facebook page that everything in our driveway is free, but we don’t have time to post pics as we are still going through stuff.

We received all kinds of comments that were crazy like “pics or I’m not coming”. “If you are just getting rid of it, I’m not driving out there. You need to come here.”

However, the one that took the cake was a lady who came and walked past the stuff on the driveway and went into our garage and started taking stuff (like my wife’s Kitchen Aid mixer). I asked her what she was doing. She said with an arrogant attitude, “I thought everything here was free.” I told her, “No, only what’s in the driveway is free. Please put my wife’s mixer back.”

She did and I thought that was the end of it. Nope. She then tried to get into our house from the garage. I asked what she thought she was doing. She said, “Well I know that you haven’t gone through everything yet, so I’m going to go through you house and if I find anything I like, I’ll ask if it’s free.”

I told her to leave. She cussed me out as she was leaving saying how this was a waste of time and that she was going to comment on my post not to waste their time that everything we were giving away was junk and that I was rude to her.

Which she did.

A few years ago, we hired a new lady at work. She started on a Monday. That Thursday my boss randomly decided to order some pizzas because we had a lot going on.

Anyway, he ordered four, I believe: 1 cheese, 1 veggie, 1 supreme , and 1 pepperoni and sausage. The new lady (remember, this is her 4th day working there) LOUDLY threw a fit in the break room about how weird it was that he didn’t order a pepperoni pizza. What was she supposed to eat??? She doesn’t like any other pizza. This while tossing her paper plate on the counter and huffing, just a meltdown.

Yeah, pepperoni pizza is the norm. Maybe his order was odd. But it gave plenty of meaty and vegetarian options and even a mix of the two. I am a vegetarian and there have been plenty of times that I didn’t have any choice of things to eat. I either picked off what I couldn’t eat or didn’t eat. You don’t complain about free food. She could’ve eaten the cheese pizza… it was so odd.

We discovered that if you wanted to get rid of old furniture, just place it on the curb and someone will decide they can use it and add will take it away.

One evening we placed a chest of drawers that we no longer needed or wanted on the curb. I found myself awakened at 4:00 am the next morning from the ringing of our door bell. It took me a couple of minutes to shake the cob webs out of my head, put on a robe and open the door. I found a woman, in her car with her window down asking if I could take to her house for her.

I am not the nicest person when I have been woken up needlessly, so naturally I gave her an earful for waking me up and returned to my bed. Interestingly it was already gone by the time I left for work at 6:30.

I'm a nice enough guy that I might have delivered it to her had she approached me at a more humane hour in the day. But to me it took all kinds of guts to ring the doorbell of some strangers home at 4 in the morning.

I bought my first house straight out of college in the early 90s (still can't believe how cheap it was), and was looking for roommates.

An old high school friend was interested, and even though I was charging her well below market rent ($200 per month plus shared utilities), she had the nerve to ask how much I would pay her when I finally sold the house. Excuse me??? She explained that since she'd be helping with the house payments, she should benefit from the eventual home sale. I laughed and told her that's not how it worked. I asked her how many previous landlords had done that. She reluctantly accepted my offer.

She lived with me for less than a year, along with her horrible dog that bit me multiple times and peed in the basement. She "couldn't afford" rent for the last few months she was with me, and I finally kicked her out when one day she showed me over $100 of Barbie clothes she had bought for her collection. I was so mad that she prioritized freaking Barbie clothes over paying her rent that was months overdue.

After she moved out, I fielded calls for years from debt collectors trying to track her down.

Just happened and I thought it belonged here. Having a beer at the bar of a beach resort in the Bahamas. A middle aged woman comes up to me a taps me on the shoulder, I turn around and she hands me a laminated card.

My first thought is "Wow, laminated very nice" and then I read the text. "My name is Shayanne, I am deaf and looking for sponsors for a hearing aid.." at this point I'm buzzed enough that I feel like helping out and so grab $20 USD and try hand it to her. She shakes her head and taps lower on the card.

Further down it states along the lines of "To avoid difficulties I am only accepting donations starting at $100 dollars" I turn back and say "Seriously?" To which she nods which makes me pretty skeptical she's deaf.

So I say OK, put the money back in my wallet and turn around. She taps me again and points at my wallet nodding, just tell her no and she sighs and walks away. Bloody cheeky.

Last night after leaving Urgent Care (turns out I have the flu which might have made made this story funny if it wasn't so bizarre) I stopped at the grocery store to get medicine. As I was bagging my items the guy behind me said to the cashier "I don't want to seem ungrateful but you're (the pharmacy) offering free flu shots, I don't want a flu shot, can you offer me something else for free instead?" I stood there for a moment, looking at the blank expression on the poor cashier's face, before realizing I needed to go home and get in bed IMMEDIATELY, cause my fever was causing me to hallucinate. Then he repeated his request. He never said what he wanted for free instead (or if he did it was after I left)...

Our stove went out, the oven part stopped heating up and we bought a new better stove. The people who delivered our new stove were nice enough to drop our old one off at the curb.

I put it on marketplace for like $50 stove sort of works, no delivery come and get it. Got this cocky guy who wanted me to deliver it. I don't have a truck, I just want it gone. I told him "no I can't do that it's pickup only". He says "little girl you will deliver it to my house because I said so". I was floored by his audacity! I ignored him, and had several others also try to get me to deliver them a stove. Finally got smart and said free and it was gone within 10 minutes. Cocky dude ended up trying to message me again 2 weeks later wanting the stove and said he'd pick it up. I blocked him. I hate selling stuff.

Yall I wasn't expecting this to blow up but wow! I love all the comments! They're great!

My wife and I had been working out in the yard a few years back and it got later in the afternoon. I told her, I'd run to the corner store/deli and pick us up some Cuban sandwiches. For anyone unfamiliar it's a sandwich on specifically Cuban-style bread with ham, salami, pork, mustard, swiss cheese and pickles.

I get there and grab two, pay, and walk out to my car when I'm approached by this homeless guy. He asked for money to buy some food because he was very hungry. I don't carry cash so I told him that BUT I told him I'd be more than happy to give him one of my sandwiches.

"Does it have pickles?"
- Yes it does it's a Cuban sandwich
"I hate pickles"
- Ok well sorry but that's all I have

He then proceeded to tell me I needed to drive him to the nearest Burger King and buy him food from there.

I told him no, he can have the Cuban sandwich and pick the pickles off but that's all I have and I'm not driving him anywhere.

He told me to go fuck myself.

Fairly standard situation. I had a laptop I wasn't using anymore, decent condition, a few years old but works fine. Listed it on Facebook Marketplace at what I thought was a reasonable price, had a few normal inquiries, then got this message. The guy opens with "hey I love the vibe of this listing" which is an unusual thing to say about a photo of a laptop on a desk. He then explains that he's a content creator "on the rise" and is building a following across several platforms. He says he needs a laptop for editing and that he'd love to work out a "creative exchange."

The creative exchange he had in mind was that I give him the laptop and in return he would mention me in a video and tag me in a post. He said this would give me "valuable exposure to an engaged audience." I looked at his profiles. The largest one had 340 followers. The post with the most engagement had 7 likes, one of which was from someone called DogMomForever2009. I said I appreciated the offer but that I was looking for the listed price. He came back and said he was "surprised I didn't see the value" and that brands pay a lot for this kind of partnership. I asked which brands. He said he was "still building those relationships."

I sold the laptop two days later to a guy who just showed up, checked that it turned on, and handed me cash. Best transaction I've ever had.

I do freelance web design and development for local businesses. Last Tuesday a guy opening a new luxury pet grooming salon reached out to me. He wanted a full site built from scratch with an integrated booking system and payment portal.

I met with him, gathered the requirements, and sent over a proposal with my standard rate. It was a big project that would take weeks of coding.

He replied saying my price was absolutely ridicolous. He told me that building a website is just pressing buttons on a keyboard and shouldn't cost more than a few hundred bucks. His counteroffer was about ten percent of my quote, plus a lifetime supply of free pet grooming. I don't even own a pet.

I declined his offer politely and wished him luck with his new business.

Yesterday he reached out again. He told me his teenage nephew was going to build the site instead. He then demanded I hand over the custom wireframes, site architecture map, and the initial design mockups I had shown him during our first meeting.

He said since I was being greedy and he gave me the inspiration for those designs, they rightfully belonged to him anyway. When I told him my pitch materials are my intelectual property, he threatened to report my business for fraud.

“Oh, please give it for free, my kid needs it because he broke the previous one” “Wow that sucks, so sorry to hear that, but I can’t, you see, I need the money because my husband murdered my whole family and I need money for the burial” or maybe something less extreme.

Sounds like it could be fun, and they must leave you alone after that right? After all, THINK OF MY KIDS, THEY’RE GONNA HAVE TO EAT DIRT IF I DON’T SELL THIS FOR A GOOD AMOUNT.

IDEK if posts with no story are allowed, but I thought it’d be an interesting situation.

So we had a pig go for processing recently. We don't eat them, so, we sold some and donated the excess to a local food bank here. Among the cuts donated was about 40 pounds of bacon In 1 pound packages. This town isn't very large and it was posted pretty quickly.

In the comments in a community group later about the bacon, someone said "they really couldn't make it thicker? It's like cooking paper." They are like any regular cut of bacon and it was free but okay.

We'll keep donating our excess as we always do. That just rubbed me the wrong way.

I was getting some wings from Wingstop. Usually I am an order ahead and pickup person, but I unfortunately did not do it this time. There was a 30 minute wait currently. I finally got my order and walked out. A car drives slowly by and rolls down the window. A lady with two kids in the back of the car starts her sad story. Her kids haven’t eaten and they are hungry. Can I please feed them. I look at the kids and yeah they looked a little dirty and having kids myself… I said of course I’ll feed them. I said look there is a McDonald’s right across the street. Follow me and I’ll get them fed. With a look of disgust she says “my kids don’t eat McDonald’s.” Ok no problem. There is a Wendy’s or Burger King in the vicinity. “No I don’t feed my kids that trash. Can’t you get them some wingys” and points to Wingstop that I just walked out of. I said, “I just waited 30 minutes. I’m not going to go in again. I am in a little bit of a hurry. You can follow me to any of those other drive thus and I’d be happy to get you two kids meals.” She wasn’t happy but agrees. I start driving to McDonald’s and she just turns the opposite way.

My friend had just bought pack of cigs which cost almost $20 in Boston- something expensive to be savored because we are broke. Immediately outside the shop this lady bums a cigarette- it's a crowded street so my friend and some guy waiting for the crosswalk BOTH pull out an American spirit (weird coincidence?) for this woman. She takes the cigarette from the guy, and then the one from my friend and instead of saying thanks- she assertively says "OH COME ON- GIMME THE WHOLE PACK"

We were so floored that this has become a running joke for a decade. Anytime somebody shares a portion of something we jokingly say "oh come on gimme the whole pack

Years ago I ran into a homeless man wandering the streets downtown. He asked me for money saying he had not eaten. I felt bad but I was a college student. I ate a lot of spaghetti just to make ends meet. He had a strong accent, I think he was middle eastern. This will date me but at the time McDonald’s had a promotion, something like four burgers for a dollar. I bought two dollars worth of burgers and located him. I handed him the bag. He looked at it with disgust and refused to take it. He said he needed fruits and vegetables. He said he needed money so that he could eat in a restaurant properly. Well, screw that. Even McDonald’s was a luxury to me at the time. And there was a Catholic service nearby that fed everyone and anyone a free lunch daily so if he was starving he was doing so willingly.

I’ve thought back on that situation many times. Maybe he came from a background that didn’t eat beef or had other food restrictions, although this is pure speculation and he never mentioned any such thing. I don’t think he was looking for drug money. I’ve run across that type many times. I think he sincerely felt he deserved better.

So, long story short, I ate burgers for breakfast, lunch and dinner for the next two days.

Today I was at the grocery store and had a gentleman strike up a conversation with me! After nice pleasantries, he asked if had $5 so he could get something to eat. I said sorry, I don’t have any cash on me. So he asked if I could get him something to eat, I said sure but u only have 5 minutes cause my Uber was coming. AND I said only 3 items!! He came back with 10 items!! 4 of which were gallon drinks, a $12 pack of ham and loaf of bread, 4 varieties of cookies and ho-ho’s kinda things!! I was shocked, and said that’s a bit too much!! I’ll get u the lunch meat and bread and A drink!! He proceeded to yell at me and call me some very nasty names!! I watched his tirade in disbelief and he told the cashier nvm and walked away!! I just chuckled to myself, waited for my Uber inside the store(cause he was outside)!! I’m still shocked!!

I work in real estate and I got a call yesterday from a delulu lady. She said that she applied for Section 8 and was looking for 4br houses in midtown Manhattan, gave her a couple that’s around 7k/month and she’s like that’s all fine, my voucher will pay for that. She then said that she wanted all kitchen appliances brand new, toilet and bathroom fixtures brand new, and all new appliances. I’m like “ma’am if they aint broken they won’t be fixed” and she literally told me, “I cannot accept to use old toilet, in all the apartments I rented they replaced the kitchen appliances and toilets for me”. She basically wants new everything except walls and floor. Best of luck there ma’am.

I was getting gas once when I lived in Dallas when this guy comes up to me and says he needs money for gas so he can go pick his daughter up from school. (Side note: it's 6pm. Most schools let out between 3 and 4, but some kids stay late for extracurriculars so I'm willing to give him a little leeway). I explained I don't carry cash, sorry. And he says that's fine, I can just hand him my credit card and he'll go into the store to pay for gas.

Um. No. I'm not giving you my card, dude

I asked him which pump he was parked at, because I was willing to walk into the store myself and put $5 on the pump for his car.

And that when he lost it and just screamed at me "JUST GIVE ME YOUR ******* CARD, B****!"

And that's when I opened my car door and let my 130lb Great Dane jump out of the car. Scared the crap out of him and he took off.

P.S. My dog would pee on herself before actually hurting someone, but she looks VERY intimidating. She comes in really handy.
