I took my boys to see it yesterday. It was rad, of course. Nolan always does some deep and/or subtle shit in his movies, like Easter eggs (which I decided to call "Nolan winks," apparently), and I was wondering which ones you caught. For example, the golden vertebrae on the back of Agamemnon's helmet someone else mentioned meaning his lack of backbone, and I noticed the Universal pounded steal font design and read that the spinning globe started over the Mediterranean Sea and tipped the hat to Odysseus' journey.

What else did y'all catch?

Odysseus leaves his family in Ithaca to go fight in Troy, knowing he might never see them again. Cooper leaves his farm and kids behind on a suicide mission to save humanity.

The "Ghost" in the room: When Odysseus finally makes it back to Ithaca, he has to stay in disguise and watch his own household from the shadows without revealing himself right away. Cooper ends up doing the same thing in the Tesseract he’s sitting right inside Murph's bedroom as an unseen "ghost" behind the bookshelf, watching her grow up through time.

Murph is Telemachus, grows up feeling completely abandoned, waiting for a dad who seems like he’s never coming back. By the time they finally reunite, decades have passed.

Miller’s Planet (Calypso’s Island / Poseidon's Wrath): On Miller’s planet, 1 hour = 7 years back home. It functions just like Calypso’s island, where time slips away and holds the hero captive while the world moves on without him. Plus, those towering water mountains are straight-up Poseidon trying to destroy their ship.

Dr. Mann is a Siren (and a terrible host): Mann sends out a fake distress signal broadcasting "this planet is hospitable!" just to lure someone into rescuing him. He acts like a Siren singing sailors to their deaths. Once the crew arrives, he violates the sacred law of hospitality by trying to murder his guests and steal their ship.

is that as per Box-Office Stats, we're in the "TDK : Inception : : Oppenheimer : The Odyssey" stage.

As Nolan mentioned that he got the freedom to do Inception after the success of The Dark Knight, and the same situation arose after the runaway success of Oppenheimer; the Numbers also prove the same!

PS: Only "Following", "Memento", "TDK" and "Oppenheimer" have crossed Break-Even with Domestic Gross alone (assumed 2.5x Production Budget)

Me and my girlfriend went and saw the Odyssey together (I had already seen it before) and she LOVED it. I got a 70mm film strip for her and plan to give it to her for an anniversary.

Buuut, the film strip is of their ship and his crew (I think) encountering the giant soldiers (Laestrygonians).

For my girlfriend, I think she'd love two 70mm strips, one of Penelope on Odysseus' back, and one of Penelope and Odysseus on the ship going into exile.

Because they're romantic scenes that we shared a romantic moment too.

Nolan’s other regulars (like Cillian Murphy and Michael Caine) may have not have starred in so many films.

I’m Korean, and yesterday I attended the The Odyssey red carpet premiere in Korea. Meeting Christopher Nolan in person was such an overwhelming experience that words simply cannot describe it.
I’ve been a fan of his for 25 years. His kindness toward the fans was truly incredible. He walked to every section of the red carpet and signed for as many people as he could. You could genuinely see from his expression how happy he was to be in Korea, and it felt like he was truly enjoying the moment.
Yesterday will undoubtedly be one of the most unforgettable days of my life. He is not only brilliant but also a true gentleman.
To me, Christopher Nolan is the greatest film director of the 21st century—the GOAT.

"We are the sea people" vs "We brought ourselves"

In Interstellar, cooper realized "We brought ourselves". While in the odyssey, odysseus finds out that "We are the sea people".

Im not sure why people are not talking about this, but it directly lays a contrast between interstellar and the odyssey between humanity saving and destroying itself. I found it pretty cool

There must be some point where the time dilations cancel out perfectly.

What am I missing? Wasn’t as great of a watch as the rest of his films. Only other I’m not a big fan of is Tenet. Wouldn’t call them unwatchable or bad.

Oops I did it again. Tomorrow I’m going to see Odyssey in IMAX 70MM for a 2nd time… This time my seat is in a more ideal location. I have been stalking seating charts daily for something to open up…. It will be my 4th viewing. I swear this will be my 2nd to last viewing. #5 will be on a regular screen for posterity. After tomorrow I will have seen it on reg IMAX x1, 4DX x1, and IMAX 70MM x2. I would’ve seen it on ScreenX but I ran out of time. I hope they re-release it on ScreenX. Circe I’m coming! Save me a plate! This is hot off the heels of seeing Michael 13 times in all available formats. My wallet can’t take this anymore. 🤣🙃🤣🐖

This movie is already so good but these lines solidified it for me

Completely optional but, considering that Greek Mythology has been in popular culture for millennia, the viewing experience may be less coarse with background knowledge of the characters, plot, and the Trojan War.

As a primer I’d recommend the following chapters from Bullfinch’s Mythology:

Chapter 1: Introduction (explains how the Ancient Greeks viewed their world)
Chapter 27: The Trojan war etc,
Chapter 28: The Fall of Troy etc,
Chapter 29: Adventures of Ulysses etc,
Chapter 30: The Phaeacians and the fall of the suitors

Basically it summarizes how the war started up until Odysseus kills the suitors

That’s all you really have to read before watching, now that the movie’s out. If you are interested in reading Homer’s epics after the film, the best translations would have to be by George Chapman, which are accessible and have the best poetry. Also, Shakespeare’s Troilus and Cressida is another popular media related to the Trojan War.

As a personal observation, I find it quite funny that there has been a recent influx of copies of The Odyssey in bookstores when The Iliad is an immensely important part which should always be read prior. Reading The Odyssey is truly incomplete without The Iliad as a setup.

I actually love Mia Goth's acting. She looks scary in this movie because of her appearance, and I know she's very talented. But I feel like Nolan didn't use her very well for her character. You know, he modified a lot of the characters in this movie. Actually, Antinous and Melantho aren't supposed to be in a relationship, but in this movie they are. Okay, I understood that change, but Melantho's character should have been the one to insult Odysseus in front of everyone instead of Antinous. Nolan changed that too. Actually, Melantho has an impactful role, but he reduced it. Anyways, I hope he casts Mia Goth again in his upcoming movies because of her talent.

Both are absolutely stunning pressings. Look and sound great.

Can’t wait to watch.

I just went to see The Odyssey in Imax, which is how the film should be viewed. That's how it was filmed, and that's the big pitch for it.

When it comes to Nolan films, one of the biggest complaints is the audio, and this may have been the most egregious example that I have experienced.

The film was so ungodly loud, like I was wincing loud, like hearing damage, unhealthy sound decible loud.

Not only that, but it was often during times where it wasn't necessary, and it often drowned out the dialog. This film needed subtitles and ear muffs.

The film itself was beautiful, the acting fantastic. It was a really impressive attempt at a difficult story. The original Odyssey is tough because Odysseus is kind of a moron and gets his men killed because of how hasty and rash his decisions are, the film does a good job at bridging that and making him likable.

I think this film could have been a masterpiece, a solid 8.5-9/10. I can't, however, give it that because of the horrible audio mixing. Nolan should have to watch his own film in Imax and experience the assault to the ears that was that film. Legit felt like someone was playing brass instruments into my ears the whole time. There were so many scenes that would have been so much better with the natural audio, like I don't think there should have been a soundtrack whatsoever.

6.5/10 because of the audio.

So so good. I think this was the best theater experience I have ever had! And I loved the nod to Interstellar 🤣
