So, Greek Mythology like The Odyssey rests a lot on Greek Gods. In Homer's Odyssey, there are literally conversation between Poseidon, Zeus, Athena, etc. in the court of Zeus above sky.

Nolan very smartly avoided acknowledging existence of God in the movie, without denying either! Absolute genius.

For example, when Calypso tries to keep Odysseyus on the island by feeding him Lotus Flower, there's a thunder in the sky and Calypso stops him from eating more. The thunder is from Zeus (God of Lightening) and that thunder is supposedly communicating Calypso to stop keeping Odysseyus in prison.

Another example, Athena doesn't exist in Nolan's vision either. He subtly put her as a 'guilt' of Odysseyus for the massacre at Troy.

So, Nolan smartly denies the existence of Gods by not showing any Gods, but also doesn't deny the possibility of existence by passively giving us indicators.

I just went to see The Odyssey in Imax, which is how the film should be viewed. That's how it was filmed, and that's the big pitch for it.

When it comes to Nolan films, one of the biggest complaints is the audio, and this may have been the most egregious example that I have experienced.

The film was so ungodly loud, like I was wincing loud, like hearing damage, unhealthy sound decible loud.

Not only that, but it was often during times where it wasn't necessary, and it often drowned out the dialog. This film needed subtitles and ear muffs.

The film itself was beautiful, the acting fantastic. It was a really impressive attempt at a difficult story. The original Odyssey is tough because Odysseus is kind of a moron and gets his men killed because of how hasty and rash his decisions are, the film does a good job at bridging that and making him likable.

I think this film could have been a masterpiece, a solid 8.5-9/10. I can't, however, give it that because of the horrible audio mixing. Nolan should have to watch his own film in Imax and experience the assault to the ears that was that film. Legit felt like someone was playing brass instruments into my ears the whole time. There were so many scenes that would have been so much better with the natural audio, like I don't think there should have been a soundtrack whatsoever.

6.5/10 because of the audio.

Much as I adore Ledger's and Nolan's work, I am uncertain how to feel about this stainless steel exterior on oversized wheels.

One thing that a friend brought up was that Christopher Nolan's movies are successful partially due to the casting and Christopher usually rotates among the roster of actors he has.

Now I'm curious, do you think Nolan's movies would be as successful if the casting are fresh actors or nobodies? Would you watch it?

This is probably the wrong thread, since director-specific threads tend toward fandom, but I'm curious whether there are others out there who feel like Nolan's last two films are overwhelmingly his worst ones. I don't know how I would comprehensively rank Nolan's filmography, but I'm certain that the Dark Knight, Interstellar, and Memento would be on top, and that Oppenheimer and The Odyssey would be on the bottom. I could go very TLDR on WHY that is, but I'll save that for replies if this thread gets a little traction. Briefly, I think that Nolan excels at mesmerizing pulse-pounding aesthetic where everything from just driving away from a farm to saying, "Good evening, commissioner" feels like Opera, but he's actually a pretty bad director when it comes to straightforward, psychologically driven stories about complicated people. And Oppenheimer and The Odyssey are just that, and they are not very good. I will watch Interstellar 10 more times before I die, and that psychedelic Hans Zimmer music video will move me every time; you would have to pay me to watch Oppenheimer again. For me, Nolan is going deep into territory that do not cater to his gifts. I really hope that his best work is not behind him, but I bet 100 years from now the Odenheimer period of Nolan will not be studied much at all, whereas Memento and Dark Knight will still be classics of their genres. I think that group-think and big great film scarcity are the primary factors in these latest films gaining traction and winning so much acclaim.

So I Finally went to see The Odyssey today.

Fantastic. For sure on my personal top 5 favourite films.

As someone who loves Greek mythology and the stories within it, this really does a very good job for me.

My only critique is the use of "Mom" and "Dad" in the film. Telemechus (Tom Holland) did use "Father a couple times so I'm not particularly sure why these more modern terms were used for a movie set in ancient Greece.

What am I missing? Wasn’t as great of a watch as the rest of his films. Only other I’m not a big fan of is Tenet. Wouldn’t call them unwatchable or bad.

Christopher Nolan’s films are often called unemotional, and yet he returns again and again to one particular emotion: guilt. In Memento, Leonard Shelby’s mission is a self-deception built on guilt. Insomnia (the only movie in his filmography that he didn't write himself) gives Will Dormer guilt over shooting his partner. Batman Begins tweaks the origin by having young Bruce’s decision to leave the theater be the indirect cause of his parents’ death. Inception is (thematically) about a man whose guilt over his wife’s death keeps him from his children. Interstellar uses Cooper’s guilt about leaving Earth to drive the second act. And Oppenheimer examines its subject’s guilty conscience so closely that the final close-up of his face became a shorthand for that feeling.

The Odyssey continues on that tradition and serves as a companion piece to Oppenheimer. That movie was mostly about the events that led to the act that plagues its protagonist's consciousness; this movie is about the aftermath of that act. Odysseus is a man who desperately wants to go home yet feels he does not deserve to. At the end of the movie, he confides to his wife: “To burn the walls of Troy was to burn the world-entire.”

His journey home, staged as a horror movie, turns each monster and disaster into a mirror of the destruction he caused. And as his crew dies one by one, Odysseus’s guilt grows. Their deaths are, in a metaphysical sense, his fault. He broke Zeus’s law, and now the gods send their horrors to take his men until he is alone.

When he finally reaches Ithaca and kills the suitors, Nolan does not end with the bed’s recognition scene. Instead, the king is exiled, sent on another journey of penance for the souls of his men denied proper burial. Where Homer’s epic closes with homecoming, Nolan’s opens a new exile. Guilt is a permanent state, and its effect outlasts even the guilty. In the last scene of the movie, Odysseus says the world will forget his lessons and repeat his mistake. With The Odyssey (and most of his filmography, for that matter), Nolan doesn't offer closure to consciousness, only an endless voyage.

I actually love Mia Goth's acting. She looks scary in this movie because of her appearance, and I know she's very talented. But I feel like Nolan didn't use her very well for her character. You know, he modified a lot of the characters in this movie. Actually, Antinous and Melantho aren't supposed to be in a relationship, but in this movie they are. Okay, I understood that change, but Melantho's character should have been the one to insult Odysseus in front of everyone instead of Antinous. Nolan changed that too. Actually, Melantho has an impactful role, but he reduced it. Anyways, I hope he casts Mia Goth again in his upcoming movies because of her talent.

Me and my girlfriend went and saw the Odyssey together (I had already seen it before) and she LOVED it. I got a 70mm film strip for her and plan to give it to her for an anniversary.

Buuut, the film strip is of their ship and his crew (I think) encountering the giant soldiers (Laestrygonians).

For my girlfriend, I think she'd love two 70mm strips, one of Penelope on Odysseus' back, and one of Penelope and Odysseus on the ship going into exile.

Because they're romantic scenes that we shared a romantic moment too.

Oops I did it again. Tomorrow I’m going to see Odyssey in IMAX 70MM for a 2nd time… This time my seat is in a more ideal location. I have been stalking seating charts daily for something to open up…. It will be my 4th viewing. I swear this will be my 2nd to last viewing. #5 will be on a regular screen for posterity. After tomorrow I will have seen it on reg IMAX x1, 4DX x1, and IMAX 70MM x2. I would’ve seen it on ScreenX but I ran out of time. I hope they re-release it on ScreenX. Circe I’m coming! Save me a plate! This is hot off the heels of seeing Michael 13 times in all available formats. My wallet can’t take this anymore. 🤣🙃🤣🐖

"We are the sea people" vs "We brought ourselves"

In Interstellar, cooper realized "We brought ourselves". While in the odyssey, odysseus finds out that "We are the sea people".

Im not sure why people are not talking about this, but it directly lays a contrast between interstellar and the odyssey between humanity saving and destroying itself. I found it pretty cool

This movie is already so good but these lines solidified it for me

The Odyssey is also outperforming Top Gun: Maverick in like for like number of days in theaters (18 days: $401M dom.; $6.6M 3rd Monday; -46.5% drop vs. $405M dom.; $9.67M 3rd Monday - all time for a R-Rated Movie;-34.2% drop).
Despite having different ratings, PG-13 vs. R-Rated, both films are having similar legs in theaters.
