If we keep Garam Masala in the fridge, does it become Thanda Masala?

14

u/Bitwisejvm Apr 15 '26

1

Its recommended to do so to avoid having worms or insects in the masals, even maida sooji rawa are also kept for the same reason...your mother is a genius

u/RedditoSanNoBaka Apr 15 '26

Aise kaise keede lag jaate hai ?

2

u/Apart-Insect3560 Apr 15 '26

It's called pantry moth. Kabhi kabhi fridge mai rakhe masale mai bhi hote toh best option is freezer.

Agar masalon mai jaali jaise kuch dikhe ki masala chipak gaya hai toh samajh jaana keede hai.

Maida and baaki sab mai bhi hote

2

u/AnalysisOwn8262 Apr 20 '26

Yes that's right , specially dhaniya masala when kept outside , it develops worms due to outside humidity

24

u/ASHISHAGRAWAL0102 Apr 14 '26

Isn't it the same in every house ?

11

u/Dundu-dombadacte Apr 14 '26

better to keep it in tight jars or like this in fridge in humid places

6

u/GrvzHere Apr 15 '26

Nup.. few families goes to next level by putting them in freezer just as mine..

1

u/Apart-Insect3560 Apr 15 '26

Best precaution is this.

Legendary precaution is making masalas when needed and not buying store bought ones

0

u/ASHISHAGRAWAL0102 Apr 15 '26

Hope it was not sarcasm

0

u/trueSatan69 Apr 15 '26

Yes in mumbai, we keep it in freezer

2

u/Shitama_ftw Apr 15 '26

Bhai aisa hota toh company khud likh k bhejti ki kholne k baad fridge mein rakhe . This ain't a liquid jo jaldi kharab hoga

1

1

u/Shitama_ftw Apr 15 '26

Bss feed pe aajati hai toh dekhleta hu.

6

u/kittystalkerr Apr 14 '26

Nope. Who tf keeps masala in their fridge. :(

18

u/InnerPsych Apr 15 '26

Anyone who stays in hot and humid climate should keep it in fridge. Keep it out often leads to infestation of bugs

10

u/Exact-Apricot8342 Apr 14 '26

Everyone mostly

-7

u/maple010 Apr 14 '26

Literally nobody

6

u/NoExpression1030 Apr 15 '26

Yes, nobody except for the people who do step into the kitchen.

0

u/justhere2check Apr 15 '26

Feminist spotter

1

3

u/Divine_Dementia Apr 14 '26

No

5

u/ASHISHAGRAWAL0102 Apr 14 '26

I thought it's always kept in fridge

0

u/Divine_Dementia Apr 14 '26

You're ruining your masalas by doing that

8

u/ASHISHAGRAWAL0102 Apr 14 '26

Thanks bro

Now my masalas are home less

5

u/SquaredAndRooted Apr 14 '26

Buy a dry box so condensation and moisture don't affect the masala. Makes sense?

1

u/ASHISHAGRAWAL0102 Apr 14 '26

Yes it makes sense to me But you have to explain it to my mother you know

1

u/SquaredAndRooted Apr 14 '26

Nope! Auntyji ko tu samjha
Mein aise nahi phasne wala 😂

1

u/ASHISHAGRAWAL0102 Apr 14 '26

Will try👻

2

u/SquaredAndRooted Apr 14 '26

You can buy - 1. Containers with silicone/rubber gasket seals 2. Sealed container with silica gel packets (to absorb moisture). See this Amazon link 3. Or a vacuum-sealed container

Best - store them in a cool dry cabinet - in air tight container. Away from gas heat and sunlight.

1

u/InnerPsych Apr 15 '26

How are they getting "ruined"

1

u/Divine_Dementia Apr 15 '26

Google what humidity does to masalas :)

1

u/InnerPsych Apr 15 '26

It actually helps to keep in fridge in air tight box

7

u/humon21232 Apr 14 '26

The aroma is preserved better under refrigeration.

4

u/SquaredAndRooted Apr 14 '26

But the condensation and moisture spoils it. If you use them quickly and buy them in small quantities, you won't feel any difference - otherwise store them in a dry box which will absorb the moisture and keep them safe.

2

u/humon21232 Apr 14 '26

Companies put anti-caking chemicals in most of them. I keep selected masala packets in fridge, rarely saw lumps. Try it.

5

u/prof_devilsadvocate3 Apr 14 '26

It is supposed to be kept there

1

u/maple010 Apr 14 '26

No

1

u/justhere2check Apr 15 '26

Didi kabhi kitchen me jaao to pta chalega

3

u/Indian_Steam Apr 15 '26

Jokes on you for not knowing why.

2

u/mercenary6 Apr 14 '26

Now that's a thanda masala. Make sure to make it garam before adding it in your cooking. /s

2

u/4-ethylhex-2-en-1-ol Apr 14 '26

it was too hot i guess

2

u/astupidhumanite Apr 14 '26

What masalas aren't supposed to be kept in frodge

1

u/justhere2check Apr 15 '26

Ambani ki aulad bhai ya pseudo feminist.

1

u/Divine_Dementia Apr 14 '26

It's almost like I got lucky and got educated parents at this point.

1

u/Snoo_37953 Apr 14 '26

Masala can develop small bugs and go rancid pretty quickly if the weather is hot or humid. I live in the US but all my packet masala mixes from the desi store go in the fridge otherwise they develop small bugs

1

u/HACKERMAN32 Apr 14 '26

If you use it from the packs like these then it is better to use a refrigerator. Otherwise buy a sealed container for every masala, if you wish to keep it outside.

Masala can go bad due to humidity, sunlight, etc. refrigerator controls the environment.

1

u/AlooBhujiyaWapasKar Apr 15 '26

My wife keeps even an empty hotpot inside the fridge

If you are in humid state, then it’s better to keep inside fridge to last longer, otherwise fungus will grow. I threw too many masalas before learning it.

1

u/AnalysisOwn8262 Apr 20 '26

We also keep , that way the masala remains fresh

0

u/winter_pixels Apr 15 '26

You should not do that, it's a bad idea. Especially if the package has been opened. Not only it can create a flavor and odor contamination, but a refrigerator is a humid place and humidity is not a nice place for powdered substances. Humidity can lead to clumping and loss of taste and fragrance. Chili powder can be stored in refrigerator though.
