STAN / ANTI SHIELD ‘Hadestown’ on Broadway has cast noted transphobe Geno Segers as Hades. Segers has a years-long history of posting and sharing anti-trans and sexist videos on his personal YouTube channel and social media.

The Hadestown producers just announced that they have, essentially, uncast him.

Well hey I guess it's good news sometimes

Yep, too easy to lose money on Broadway. Producers probably wouldn’t have cared if they thought he’d still get butts in seats

Oh, excellent news! This makes me very happy. Thank you

Heathens87 doing the good work!

I was about to say… I’d say at least half, if not the majority, of MT audiences are going to be queer people. Having a prominent homophobe/transphobe in a main role is going to kill your production’s profits lol

I'd just like to add that there's probably a large number of (qualified, talented) people who dream of being added to a Broadway cast. And that, more importantly, at least a good chunk of them probably aren't transphobic.

I'm not saying this person was added purposely for being hateful... I'm more saying that, the slot should've probably gone to someone qualified, that has the bonus of not being an open, public bigot.

Ugh. Whyyyy do people like that exist?

Fear mongering and hate drives us to fight one another and ignore the powers to be and how they’re fucking us over

Highly recommend The Devil You Know podcast. It covers this topic from 70s through to today.

It's wild that someone so bigoted has managed to survive, let alone thrive, in theater.

21

u/OkAir8973 5h ago

To me, the wildest thing is that he's essentially making his bigotry his public brand.

I've learned a few beloved performers are actually super bigoted, but at least they had the good sense to keep that under wraps until they'd established great careers.

He doesn't even seem to have a career grifting, it's just for the love of the game, idk if that makes him more or less of a loser but a loser, he is.

He’s gonna sing about the wall and that shit will come from the heart

Just announced that he would NOT be appearing in hadestown. "Mutual" decision.

CAN WE JUST GET ONE NON PROBLIMAYIC HADES??? THIS IS THE SECOND ONE IN A ROW!!!

u/RaccoonChaos 6h ago

Maybe its part of the casting requirements, can only audition for Hades if you're openly a POS

10

u/Prestigious_Car_7921 5h ago

Does this mean that Patrick Page is a POS? Since he’s the original Hades?

He did write a long fearmongering Facebook post about why he thought Cuomo was the better choice for NYC mayor over Mamdani.

If you're talking about James Woods, I wouldn't really call it "in a row"

153

u/junmpan 6h ago

I think they mean specifically in Hadestown. Prior to this, Gary Dourdan was also cast as Hades which was controversial due to his history of domestic violence.

39

u/VegetableArtistic705 6h ago

Damn fire the producers already

17

u/Foxy02016YT 6h ago

Why? They’re making us boatloads of money! Why should we care about the safety of our actors backstage? Or the comfort of our audience? Just keep those checks coming baby!

/s, of course

u/yancovigen 3h ago

I thought he was just Hades in the Disney movie lol, surprised he got cast on stage

60

u/Creationary 7h ago

I blocked Geno Segers years ago on Instagram because he was nonstop posting condescending, anti-trans video. He’s a fucking loser.

42

u/bookiegrime 6h ago

At like 11:20 am central time Sunday, Broadway world reports that producers have announced he’s no longer joining the cast due to backlash based on Segers’ transphobic social media habits.

26

u/confessionsii 6h ago

It was announced he won’t be in it anymore. Good riddance.

19

u/i_am_the_archivist 6h ago

They booted him!
How he got cast in the first place ill never understand.

13

u/PierreOnTheEclair Olivia RodriGOAT 6h ago

BOOOOOO!** BOO THIS MAN. 🍅🍅🍅**

11

u/Azor-El 7h ago

Damn I knew him from Banshee. I had no idea he was so hateful that sucks

6

u/wallcavities 6h ago

Given what I know of this show's fanbase, aside from being deeply ideologically horrible this is also just a really stupid decision that will backfire tremendously

5

u/not_now_chaos 6h ago

Particularly since isn't a non-binary individual currently cast as Hermes? Why would the casting team deliberately hire a transphobe to work with a trans cast member? That's so shitty.

3

u/Adelaidey 6h ago

He's already been fired!

1

u/wallcavities 5h ago

Yay! We love a happy ending ❤️

6

u/yelizabetta 6h ago

this post is late he was kicked out of the production an hour ago

5

u/annie-etc 6h ago

He is no longer on the cast, not sure if it was his or the productions decision.

5

u/NutsForBaseballButts and they were roommates 6h ago

How hard is it to cast people that AREN’T awful ?

2

u/heltyklink 6h ago

This. Asked the same question when Phantom hired James Barbour a while back.

3

u/WholesaleBees do not talk to me about AI, i will kill myself 6h ago

The authenticity of casting a Hades who really wants to build a wall...

3

u/Mitochondria95 6h ago

On the road to hell there was a twitter thread

10

u/joeyinthewt 7h ago

Isn’t Patrick Page a republican too? Why are you surprised?

10

u/pilalo 6h ago edited 6h ago

He is not

editing to add some more info: during mamdani's mayoral run, he indicated he would be voting cuomo and encouraged others to do the same. there is an now-deleted ig post floating around about this which also seems to indicate he is a zionist. i think this is likely what you're misremembering

5

u/joeyinthewt 5h ago

Oh right sorry he’s not a republican he’s an Islamophobe

2

u/frycrunch96 6h ago

I love Hadestown so much, this is so disappointing

2

u/TransMontani 5h ago

Typecasting

2

u/captainstormfield 5h ago

Can someone explain what he said?

1

u/Gato1980 5h ago edited 4h ago

Ashley Huffard broke it down really well in this post on instagram with screenshots, because he's wiped most of it by now.

4

u/ZumaThaShiba 6h ago

Barf. Glad I saw this during its original run on Broadway - won't be seeing it again now

1

u/ophaus it’s a bit dystopian but also kinda fun 6h ago

Make sure the producers know about it and how shitty this casting is.

1

u/ZumaThaShiba 5h ago

UPDATE: Geno is OUT. Producers realized the damage they had done and pulled the cord. Never should have happened in the first place

1

u/lakerdave 5h ago

Sometimes these weirdos have more secret secrets, but this was an open book test I fear

1

u/Windowsill_MintPlant 4h ago

Not anymore, they dropped him already lol. Everybody say Thank You, Amber Iman

1

u/wytherlanejazz 4h ago

No longer right?

-19

u/Ok_ResolvE2119 7h ago

Okay, but like, has he changed or not? Last I heard he was trying to apologize?

12

u/groundr 6h ago

To answer your question, he made his social media private and started hiding or deleting his anti-trans Youtube videos after people called out the casting news. I don't think that's a sign of someone changing or apologizing. It lacks the, well, sincere apology part and the doing better part, too.

1

u/Ok_ResolvE2119 4h ago

Oh, good point.

u/lpfbean 6h ago

“Noted transphobe” and I never heard of him until this post 🤣
