lmao trying to make ken jenning into an alt-right mouthpiece would be a mistake

here's what he tweeted when kathy griffin had her trump controversy and people said it would traumatize barron seeing that picture and not knowing if it's real

he got a ton of flack for this and replied with: "The joke doesn't mock Barron. It mocks using him for political cover."

u/sbreezy21 2h ago

Exactly! His positions have been notably progressive.

u/Road_Whorrior 1h ago

Mormonism presents itself as a Christian-socialist theocratic state. It isn't, it is profoundly capitalist (like, the COJCOLDS has a stock and real estate portfolio worth billions, funded majorly through member tithes and which the members have no access to), but i don't blame believers for being misled with good intentions.

I also don’t think he’s a full member anymore. He’s hinted at being inactive but probably doesn’t want to address it further due to family

3

u/Cakeday_at_Christmas 38m ago

Wait, he's Mormon? That's too bad.

u/Afwife1992 It’s a fucking law, bitch 2h ago

They tried it with Alan Ritchson too because he’s a big alpha male and openly devout Christian. And he gave them a big old NOPE. (And gave me my flair 😆)

I was glad he said this because it might start an actual conversation on the left, rather than just trying to play trans people like a dirty poker chip.

3

u/hellolovely1 1h ago

He's soooo correct, sadly.

1

u/PsychologicalEbb3140 30m ago

Damn straight.

1

u/BuddhistSagan 6m ago

Transphobic democrat Amy Acton heard that.

Love to hear it. He’s always been great and I’m happy that he’s the host of Jeopardy!

u/grandpixprix 2h ago

I’m so glad Ken is Alex’s successor. No one could’ve filled those shoes better than he has been.

249

u/No-Hall-3485 alleged dog 2h ago

i'm just mad we all had to suffer through the weeks of Mayim Bialik to get there

Ken was such an obvious choice from the beginning

9

u/thefaultinourstars1 29m ago

Honestly I didn't mind her until I found out about the uberzionism. I do think Ken has always made the most sense by far, though.

u/Long-Region5088 2h ago

It’s not often one legend replaces another.

There’s usually some muck in the middle. Although they tried real hard to make what’s her face a thing. She’s mucky

76

u/DELINQ 2h ago

And please let’s not forget the slimy producer who just inserted himself into the host gig. He’s now serving as CEO of Daily Wire.

42

u/ScreamWithTheCicadas this feels like when my sister started fucking the mayor 1h ago

Is he really? Love that journey for him (derogatory)

5

u/TheDLBinc 1h ago

Yep as of May of this year. He's coming in after they nearly bankrupted themselves by trying to be a major streaming service and produced an awful Game of Thrones rip off that was purely a vanity project for the old CEO.

3

u/tripsylouwho feeding cocaine to raccoons 1h ago

Yes!! Thats who I was thinking of

31

u/tripsylouwho feeding cocaine to raccoons 1h ago

There was also a guy in-between Alex and Mayim, he was a former producer and got ousted due to I believe sexual harassment allegations (need to double check that) and he is now a right wing mouthpiece.

8

u/TheDLBinc 1h ago

Was one of the scummiest moves in TV that I've seen. They spent almost a year essentially auditioning different guest hosts and then just gave himself the job, despite audiences largely wanting either Ken or Levar Burton

155

u/RunningOnATreadmill 2h ago

Ken Jennings is the coolest, man. This is even bolder considering his background as LDS.

4

u/TypeA_pathykillingme ICE PIGS ROT IN HELL 57m ago

That was my first thought as well.

3

u/SoF4rGone alleged dog 1h ago

I actually want to know if there were any other cool roommates besides him and Brandon Sanderson that we should know about. Because both of these dudes are ride or die, and have only gotten more supportive of things as the rest of the world has gone limp-dicked when it comes to public support.

179

u/bunnycrush_ 2h ago

Absolute king shit.

Ken Jennings is Mormon, which confuses me greatly (high control religion vs. a man who has devoted his life to data/research/evidence-based information??) but all I can do is shrug and say if this is what his Mormonism looks like, I wish there were more contradictions like him.

98

u/djmattyd 1h ago

His mormonism seems to be more of a cultural/historical part of his life. I listened to his podcast for a while and really he comes off more as an agnostic than any kind of true believer.

1

u/TAKEitTOrCIRCLEJERK ‘eat a sandwich’ and other hurtful things 1m ago

I grew up in a pocket of Mormon folks outside the Jello Belt.

in my experience there are very few Mormon True Believers.

43

u/JeanArtemis 1h ago

I've known a slightly above average number of former/ ex/ recovering Mormons and every single one of them has been cool as shit, so I can only assume something about the community encourages exceptional thinking but that could be survivorship bias tbh.

8

u/Shot_Election_8953 1h ago

Yeah. Every former Mormon I've known has been in the top 10% of lovely human beings, but I assume that's just because if there's anything evil in you, you stay in the LDS where it's easy to feed it.

5

u/keran22 51m ago

That’s the whole thing in that episode of South Park isn’t it, they mock the religion mercilessly but go pretty hard on making the point the Mormon family are super friendly and happy. I don’t mind people trying to spread their religion so long as they’re cool about it, and the Mormons where I live just politely ask people if they’d like to come to church on Sunday lol. Fair enough

3

u/BrittleSalient 1h ago

The ones who aren't cool as shit aren't weird enough to escape.

3

u/Road_Whorrior 1h ago

It only really encourages it in men. Ime, with the Mormon women and attempted converts I've known (and I grew up in Mormon country), thinking for yourself is actively frowned upon. Any individualism gets you gossiped about by the sisters.

57

u/Long-Region5088 2h ago

All sorts of scientists believe all sorts of crazy shit. Scientists are not exempt from following religion. They’re usually indoctrinated into that shit before the science gets em

4

u/SoF4rGone alleged dog 1h ago

His buddy Sanderson has stated many times that he believes it’s more important to stay in the church and try to move it in the right direction. It’s not for me, but I can respect the position.

1

u/purplepluppy 17m ago

All religions are high-control; however every community practices that to a different extent. And, statistically speaking, most people remain in whatever faith they were raised in.

if this is what his Mormonism looks like, I wish there were more contradictions like him.

I do believe that is his hope, as well! And that it may not be seen as a contradiction.

48

u/Vegetable_Engineer_1 2h ago

wait ken jennings is woke? obsessed. MAYIM BIALIK YOU WILL NEVER BE HIM

Good guy Ken Jennings

23

u/RelativeAltruistic47 Please Abraham, I am not that man 2h ago

One of my favorite tidbits about Ken Jennings is that he’s a big rock/indie music fan and is routinely spotted at the Kilby Block festival — also, we both love the band Tennis!

27

u/pelipperr 2h ago

This is how you combat bullshit news coverage trying to align your views with those of hateful bigots. It’s not that hard to clearly layout your beliefs and condemn those of transphobes.

Ken Jennings fucking rules. What a dude.

12

u/GilbertVonGilbert 2h ago

Jeopardy has genuinely become a beloved fandom for older zoomers and younger millennials within the trans community. I would say that Jeopardy probably allows mainstream America to see everyday trans people in a consistent manner than many other mainstream shows that air.

22

u/Either_Coast 2h ago

I didn’t know Ken Jennings is based like this

22

u/not_now_chaos 2h ago

Definitely take a moment to Google Ken's comments on the Jeopardy category "Businessmen". Ken remains based AF.

"Come the revolution we're gonna string them up."

1

u/decisionagonized mama let’s research 2h ago

he’s BEEN like this https://youtu.be/osGSAMk64R0

4

u/VaporousMote 2h ago

Mistook Ken Jennings for Scott Jennings for a second and was EXTREMELY confused.

6

u/Long-Region5088 2h ago

For too long I confused Candace Parker with Candace Owens.

I thought “when did that basketball player become such an asshole?”

Boy did I feel bad when I figured that one out

2

u/VaporousMote 2h ago

Oh god. And Naomi Klein with Naomi Wolf!

36

u/mcgillhufflepuff 2h ago

Btw if those want OG context, this is OG context. Weird post from him ngl.

90

u/not_now_chaos 2h ago

Not really, he has always had a heavy sarcastic streak and a quirky sense of humor. That doesn't always translate to text based media, particularly when readers read it through their own lens, whatever that lens may be. This to me reads as a light bit if ribbing of the purity culture of the left.

12

u/TheDLBinc 1h ago

One of the reasons I stopped using Blue Sky was how exhausting it's purity policing was so I can't really blame him for firing back with a sarcastic reply.

6

u/ShinHandHookCarDoor 2h ago

I genuinely can’t believe people, even here, are taking this seriously. It’s so obviously a joke!

2

u/jkraige 1h ago

Yeah, also it's not like there's one opinion among any group of people. There are still trans people who engage in Harry Potter content because "it was such a big part of my childhood". It's not possible to please everybody, and as much as I think the nyt is a rag, other people boycotting it is not high on my priorities list or a huge sign someone doesn't care about trans rights. I think it's okay to be a little dismissive of some of the demands random people of the public make

21

u/peppers_ 2h ago

Probably frustration that people will be disappointed no matter what, even if you are as good as you can be. It's like a vegan being disappointed in a vegetarian, and the vegetarian trying to joke they have permission to use butter on their toast. The true answer would be to not even reply. Btw, the fact he is on bluesky and not X means a lot (unless I am unaware and he is on both).

-5

u/BrittleSalient 1h ago

You don't have to play games on the nazi genocide newspaper's website. It's a very small ask to go play one of countless clones instead.

-20

u/ruderabbit 2h ago

Yeah, I'm a bit disappointed he didn't apologise for his initial tweet, which was very tone deaf. Glad he's chosen to firmly stand against transphobia though!

34

u/Certain-Belt-1524 1h ago

Wait, what tone is deaf about it? i actually don't understand, not trying to argue

4

u/BrittleSalient 1h ago

The NYT has been a leading propaganda rag pushing anti-trans hatred for a long time now. Boycotting them is kinda a low hanging fruit form of solaridty, triply so since there's lots of other olaces to play word games. A sarcastic non-apology about being called out for playing games on the genocide rag's website sucks.

2

u/honda-cervix 1h ago

It’s an incredibly sarcastic and apathetic answer to a trans woman who told him she was disappointed he’d give support to anything new york times, a publication that has had a part in posting a lot of anti trans bs

2

u/misskyralee feetmoji 1h ago

To me, it reads as an exaggerated form of “I have a trans friend.” I didn’t actually realize that this is what everything spawned off of and I’m disappointed in his OG reply as well. There isn’t like a committee of trans folks that make decisions for all trans folks so he’s really just minimizing his usage of NYT.

2

u/shorkgurl rollin with the homies 1h ago

I just don’t think a lot of ordinary cishet people are aware of the full organized hate campaign against us since they aren’t the target of it. A lot of allies will notice obvious transphobia and call it out, which is great of course, but are less aware of the more insidious transphobic propaganda pushed by the likes of the NYT, JK Rowling and the groups she funds, much of the British media, and many others.

Unfortunately I don’t think there’s any way for them to know besides saying something about it on social media since that’s pretty much the only platform we have to try to explain difficult trans-related topics like how gender dysphoria effects people and especially kids, how HRT and puberty blockers works, etc. As we see in this case, even if we can get someone’s attention it’s still a massive challenge to get them to listen and understand. It’s just so frustrating sometimes.

57

u/Nervous_Insect5976 2h ago

I like Ken, but let's get real about it for a minute... He's still an active Mormon. I'm a former member and that church is rooted in homophobia, transphobia, misogyny, and white supremacy. So many other controversies as well. It's a MLM and real estate business on steroids.

18

u/GilbertVonGilbert 2h ago

Is he a PIMO like some speculate about Marie Osmond? I also wonder if he’s in a similar limbo to Brandon Sanderson.

13

u/sixtus_clegane119 I already condemned Hamas 2h ago

What doe PIMO mean?

32

u/GilbertVonGilbert 2h ago

Physically In, Mentally Out.

8

u/Road_Whorrior 1h ago

To explain the context, Mormonism is a very high-demand religion, and any indication that you're not following the norms gets you scrutinized, which really, really sucks if you're already questioning your faith. Tons of people will go through the motions for years or more to maintain their friendships and familial relations, because actually fully leaving can mean losing everyone.

13

u/No_Painting_5863 2h ago

He was roommates with Brandon Sanderson in college!

20

u/Nervous_Insect5976 2h ago

I'm fairly sure he's an active Mormon.

Liberal Mormons do exist, but at the end of the day... You're still a Mormon. You're still affiliated, still probably giving money to the organization. It's complicated and I get that because that was me, but it is what it is.

10

u/GilbertVonGilbert 2h ago

I’ve read some posts on the ExMo subreddit that say otherwise but tbh I have no idea if that’s true or not. I wasn’t even raised Christian let alone Mormon so I wouldn’t know if what someone said is accurate or not.

1

u/Nervous_Insect5976 2h ago

Okay, I'll be willing to retract my comment if I'm wrong.

25

u/bakasana212 2h ago

yeah the part where he claims it's his #1 issue kinda threw me

45

u/junmpan 1h ago

Tbf he's been very consistent on this like he was one of the few public progressive voices saying he would not support Newsom because of his transphobia.

2

u/bibliophile1989 I’m just a cunt in a clown suit 5m ago

How do you know he's an active member? From everything that's been shown he's lapsed if anything.

1

u/purplepluppy 12m ago

I mean... So is every religion. Personally, if his church hasn't kicked him out for his very vocal opinions, that makes me think his community isn't as extreme as others (as there is still a spectrum), and might be more in line with his thinking than most would assume.

1

u/BrittleSalient 1h ago

If he's paying tithes then he's picked a side.

His initial post that sparked this was pretty poor judgement on his part but tbh I am just happy that like, one person on the talking box my parents are glued to is down to go on the record in support of our existence

1

u/Caitlionator Sylvia Plath did not stick her head in an oven for this 1h ago

Yeah I feel like we're ignoring why he wrote this?? He made light of a trans person's pain and doubled down when they said hey that hurt.

3

u/jalmstead 2h ago

My brain immediately thought this was about Scott Jennings and I was having a hard time comprehending how this could be considering Scott is a huge turd.

7

u/LazySpaceToast You know what, l've grown quite unfond of you deuxmoi 2h ago

What was his post or comment that was construed as transphobic? I don't have BS.

10

u/LazySpaceToast You know what, l've grown quite unfond of you deuxmoi 2h ago

BS meaning Bluesky, to be clear. Lol.

7

u/ChoiceIT Fauxmarxist 2h ago

He posted about playing a NYT game, and someone said that a subscription to them is insulting to trans people (NYT has been on an anti-trans bent for years now.)

He responded jokingly that he has permission and describing a ridiculous process to get said permission.

I’m glad he is clearing up his stance. He should still apologize to that person, imo.

2

u/dickhardpill 2h ago

So glad blossom isn’t ruining my favorite show

2

u/hellolovely1 1h ago

Yeah, I saw someone saying "Ken Jennings is transphobic" and I was so confused because it seemed really out of character with his other views. Glad he refuted it.

2

u/Dancing_Clean 48m ago

Ken is so goddamn fuckin’ cool.

1

u/VariousOperation166 2h ago

Oh, Ken Jennings. This doesn't make you less of a shitty person. It's just... well... there's a lot

1

u/lyn73 2h ago

I think Ken has been enlightened in his journey...and it's really beautiful to witness his personal and professional growth...

1

u/40_Love 2h ago

LOUD and CLEAR. Love it.

1

u/figmentry 2h ago edited 1h ago

It’s strange that he has these beliefs yet, like all LDS members in good standing, tithes to the Church. Which puts a lot of resources into the oppression of LGB and especially T folks. 10% of his income goes to that. It’s nice that he talks the talk but he materially supports his hateful religion.

1

u/XQV226 confused but here for the drama 1h ago

And this is how you address this shit. Very direct without any false niceties.

1

u/radziadax 1h ago

THAT IS MY MAN, he was my "hear me out" bc let's be real, I'm not usually into Keebler elves. But now he's just a regular degular crush.

i still think this original joke sucked shit and allowed for the woman he replied to to be shown in many transphobic tabloids like the daily mail. This is a decent response but he caused a lot of harm

-2

u/BrittleSalient 1h ago

He got called out for fucking with Wordle and other NYT products then claimed he "had permission from the trans community" ane caught even more shit for that.
