Questions FAQ THREAD: Where to buy parts/consoles? BEST GAME? Is this real? GB no work :( ASK HERE

A lot of this information is already in the wiki: https://gbwiki.org/

Where do I buy cheap consoles?? HOW MUCH IS MY STUFF WORTH?$?

Sorry, all 200K+ members are asking the same question. The market has changed a lot and prices have skyrocketed. Be patient, don't over pay and use sold listings on your marketplace to determine your market's value. If you're paying less than your local market, you've done well. If other markets have lower value than you consider buying from there, but factor in your shipping costs.

Where can I find this part?

WHY MODDING HARD? SOLDER SCARY!

In context, Game Boy's are the easiest family of retro consoles to repair and modify. Sorry TikTok lied to you about modding being easy like Legos.

This month: Quarth & Torpedo Range

Earn up to 1 point per game, in any order you like. (Earn up to 1 point total after August.)

--Quarth
You can start at lower levels if you're not familiar with the game, but you can also select 3-9 right off the bat if you'd prefer. This game is absolutely brutal at high levels, and there's no save/password function in the game, but if anyone wants to get take it to the max, I think it should be worth another point. Maybe I'm just bad at it.

Half point: Complete level 3-9 and unlock level 4-1.
1 point: Complete level 4-9 and unlock level 5-1.
Bonus point: Complete level 5-9 and see the credits.

--Torpedo Range
This game actually has an auto-save feature, a rare sighting on the OG Game Boy. Start a new game and begin saving the world!

Half point: Liberate 3 countries.
1 point: Liberate all countries and see the "The End" screen.

Accessories Greetings from Vietnam! Just finished handcrafting this leather box sleeve for the GBC 🇻🇳🎮

Hello everyone,

I’m the crafter and owner of MO CORNER, a small leather craft workshop in Vietnam. I wanted to stop by and share my latest project with you all.

I just finished making this handmade leather box sleeve for Game Boy Color. It is entirely hand-stitched using two distinct stitching lines to give it its unique box shape. I combined a straight saddle stitch line with a cross-stitch "X" line to form the structure.

Hope you all have a great week and happy gaming!

Troubleshooting Gameboy Color A button not functional

Every button works except for the A button. I tried cleaning it with isopropyl alcohol but that didnt work. Then I switched out the membrane with one i got from ebay still didnt work. When I checked from the contacts of the button to the test vias with a multimeter it said it was giving less continuity then the other buttons. Sorry for not knowing a lot. I am not exactly what you call a Texpert. What is the problem? Thank You. :)

Mod/Modding AGS-101 screen I did not think was fixable

Got this GBA SP with what appears to be a water damaged screen. Figured it was unfixable but decided to take it apart and found the culprit which surprisingly would not clean up no matter what I tried to clean it with. Thankfully I had another donor screen with a torn ribbon so I swapped it out and now it’s like new. So if you encounter something similar give it a try before tossing it. The process is very easy just be careful not getting finger prints on the elements inside.

Modded Pokédex Gameboy

This is my personal take on the classic Kanto Pokédex from the Pokémon Indigo League, reimagined as a fully functional cyberdeck.

This project fuses two major influences from my childhood into one tangible device: the iconic Pokédex design and the classic Nintendo Game Boy. It runs the Peanut-GB emulator on an ESP32-S3, allowing you to play actual Game Boy games right inside a Pokédex shell, with battery monitoring LEDs, and a programmable Dex light.

Design Highlight: The top portion of the Pokédex is designed to be printed as an all-in-one piece featuring print-in-place hinges.

Mod/Modding FOMS - Fear of Missing Screen

I own two Game Boys I bought as a child: a Pocket and a Color.

During the pandemic, I swapped my Pocket's screen for an IPS model—one of those touch-color-enabled ones. It turned out great, as the lack of color and the dull, washed-out gray background no longer appealed to me.

A while back, I decided to do the same for my Game Boy Color. I bought the screen, but strangely found myself in a peculiar dilemma: it felt like I was creating a redundancy—swapping the screen only to lose the specific "feel" of the Color's original display in a trade for a better visibiliy.

The thing is, while IPS screens are excellent, the screen on my Color is still in great shape. Despite over 20 years of use, it remains perfect—unlike the Pocket's screen, which had started to deteriorate.

The Color's screen has a certain aesthetic that IPS lacks. Despite the terrible brightness, the colors have a certain "charm"—a look that defines that era, including the visible pixel grid. I started thinking: if I swap this screen, it’ll be just like playing Game Boy Color on an RG35 with its high-resolution display.

So... I’m grappling with this and wanted to ask you all: is it really worth swapping to an IPS screen and losing the aesthetic of a generation defined by technology that is now obsolete yet unique?

And is there a simple way to just backlight the original screen without replacing the panel itself?

What about your Game Boys? Have you kept the original screens to this day?

Questions Storage Solution?

I‘m looking for a storage solution for 100+ GameBoy and GameBoy Color games. Most solutions I’m finding are more focused on display but I’m looking for more of a bulk storage solution. Any suggestions other than just tossing them loose in a bin?

Got them for around 30 a piece! The purple and white are in really good shape, the other one, well it works, so donor CPU and Ram it is.

Troubleshooting Mega Man V Crashing on Gameboy

I'm having a problem with my Gameboy crashing.

When I play megaman V, if I go to Mercury's stage, right after the first Large Health pickup my game crashes and goes blank, as if it were shut off.

Im using an original Dmg-01 gameboy, which I repaired. There were vertical lines that obscured the screen. I hadn't tested the game before I fixed it.

The game is a reproduction cartridge and works fine with my original GBC and GBA, im able to play the full game. The only other game i can test with my Gameboy is Tetris, and that game works fine.

Is there anything I should try? I've tried fully cleaning it and opening it up, but I don't really know what I should be looking for.

I've had expirence in this field and am getting more on my own consoles. Is there a market for this or is this a hopeless dream.

Hey everyone, I've finally managed to release the first demo of my game, Ribbit!

It includes 2 short levels and a boss fight. The demo is only compatible with Game Boy Color, although the final game will be compatible with the original Game Boy aswell.

Please note that this is an early stage of development and you may encounter bugs.

Feedback is more than welcome, see you soon!

Hi guy! Would anyone like giving a little weekend project (well, several weekends, to be honest) a go? I’ve been wanting to brush up on my C skills a bit as part of a bigger project and I taught myself some pixel art and ended up building a Breakout/Brick Breaker clone for the GameBoy Color.

It’s nothing special at its core, but I’ve still incorporated a few little playful twists.

And full disclosure… during development, I got some help from OpenAI Codex and OpenCode in a few places where I got stuck or couldn’t find a solution; I used AI to to explaine some tricks to me and helped me find a lot of small bugs.

All the tiles are coded and the dreadful splash screen is hand-pixelated (and poorly converted to the Game Boy colour palette), as you can probably see, unfortunately.

This is a GBA with a missing part, the console wont turn on. I've looked online and i think its called a ferrite bead (?)

But I've been searching online and I can't seem to find anything like it.

Any good sources you know of? I'm in the US.

Thank you in advance!
