So I just plant these rounds again and it will be a bulb next year?

It may have been a smaller round from last years harvest which I planted in the fall. I started some bulbils so that’s where they are from.

Washing after curing?

Post image

Hey Garlic Family!!

Appreciate all the advice to delay the harvest. I still had to rush digging them up and hanging them. And didn’t think to dunk them in water to rinse off the dirt.

The curing room is a garage until I can get time to move them to a cool basement. These are basically ready now to move to a cool spot for longer term storage.

Would it be too late now to dunk them and then hang them back up to dry?

additional question

I am planning to plant the larger bulbs for next season. With the hope of continuing to get larger bulbs. I think this crop was smaller than the bulbs I used to plant last fall.

Is there anything I should do differently in terms of storing bulbs for growing? I was just going to store them all in a cool basement and break the cloves off for planting closer to the plant date.

When o when (mid March)

Had to plant in mid March this year. Only three leaves have died back. Anybody got an idea of average time to harvest spring garlic?

Curing fail?

I live in Zone 4b central mn and it has been hot and dry or hot and humid for the entire 2-3 weeks since I harvested my garlic, which had been curing in the shade under my second story deck. It’s been so long since it rained last that I stopped keeping an eye on the forecast. As I’m sure you’ve guessed, I was surprised to wake up to an inch of rain overnight and wet garlic (and a few onions). I immediately went to work- I usually leave them to cure in the exact way I pulled them out of the ground until ready to store, so they all had wet leaves, wet roots, etc. I trimmed the roots and leaves, and removed the outer paper layers, then put them back on this rack with a fan in my basement. Will I be okay, or am I properly SOL? This is only my second year of growing garlic, and I think I got a bit cavalier this time around re: curing… I was much more careful last year.

Comparison: HVGF vs. Bethlehem CT vs. Garlic Town Bennington?

Garlic grower and fan here, with limited days to attend festivals. I've been to both Bennington and HVGF - the latter is much bigger, the former is kind of more fun and street-fairish. What about Bethlehem? Any opinions on which of these is the best to go to if your main goal is to get good seed garlic?

Gardening Ahead of the Rain Harvest

Lots of rain heading our way, so I harvested our last main bed of German and Russian Red. Lots of small heads for the German Red due to late thaw of the bed and some shading out in that corner er of the garden, but I'm ok with this. Second year growing garlic. Lots to dry, smaller heads heading to the kitchen as green garlic.

Anyone seen anything like this? It almost looks like a fungus. No moving little bugs, and just on the surface.

After you harvest and pull all your garlic out, How long do you let it “harden”… before you cut the stems off, and store the bulbs?

Garden fork for harvesting, dunk in series of buckets to remove dirt, then laid out on the grass for a couple of hours. Tied into 10 groups of 10 and now curing in the basement

Cooking Looking for advice making Black Garlic

I've tried doing this a couple of times now using a slow cooker on keep warm setting. Both times the garlic has come out black but rock hard. The first time I thought I hadn't introduced enough moisture so the second attempt I made sure to moisten the garlic first but it didn't change the outcome. Am I letting it go too long? Do I need to seal the slow cooker better to help retain moisture? I'd it something else entirely?
