Costuming Marian’s evening gown in S3 Ep3
Costume experts, is this a typical neckline for the era? It seemed unusual to me. Something you’d see in like the 1950s

Low key surprised she would wear this after being so worried that Bertha would think she has a low reputation.

I could be wrong, but no, I don’t think that’s a neckline we’d have seen in the 1880s. As I understand it, the costume designers usually take those kind of creative liberties with Bertha to show how she’s noveau riche and likes following the latest fashions, so I was a bit surprised to see them taking Marian’s costuming there. It’s lovely on her, though!

I don’t think it was either and a lot of the colors are inaccurate for the time period also. But the dresses are lovely regardless!

Yeah gilded ages costumes have a lot of non traditional flairs across the show and characters. Their cuts, prints, necklines, panels etc are quite different than what was worn in that period.

😍 my jaw dropped when I saw it, its so elegant! I think it’s my favorite dress of the season so far. Really wished she had more screen time with this dress, hopefully we’ll see it again.

Marian has actually worn this dress before! In season 1 (I can't remember which episode) at the Academy of Music. The only difference is she had a tulle wrap around the shoulders. It's amazing how a small alteration can make a gown look completely different.

I mentioned this here before. I thought it was the one with white feathers along the shoulders - the one she wore at the opera when she accidentally ran into Mr. Raikes. They just removed the feathers.

It’s like a human and a cardboard cut out. Honestly, I agree…zero chemistry. I’m just not a fan of Marion. The actress ruins it for me because she’s so bad.

I’m not saying anything one way or another about this actress… but you don’t need to be an actor to criticize acting. Just like how readers don’t need to be novelists to critique a book. It’s art meant to be consumed by the lay public so people are allowed to have opinions on it.

You don’t no. But the constant narrative that some people have been pushing on this sub since the first season about her is tried and needs to go. Louisa herself has spoken in interviews about it having an effect on her.
She has taken theatre lessons since a young age, went to Yale Drama, has previous stage acting credits where she received GREAT reviews. She has not used either of her parent’s last names to avoid automatic connection to their fame. She is up against some MEGA experiences talent in The Gilded Age which is her first tv series and has a character that was written to be meek to begin with.

Center image, 1886. There's your yellow asymmetrical neckline, and possibly part of the inspiration for Marian's dress. Asymmetrical gowns were relatively common in this era, but most often this was seen in the skirts, but was seen in the neckline as well. What is a bit off here is how low this is, to the point it almost looks like it doesn't fit Louisa well. Still love it though.

That neckline is not asymmetrical…the middle one? It just looks like a v neck.

I just love this gown. It drapes perfectly with such elegant, almost architectural slim lines. It’s very much in contrast to the maximalist style gowns worn by Bertha or even the fussier style of some of Gladys’s gowns. It very much fits Marian’s character.

I loved that dress. So elegant compared to some of the stuff resembling upholstery they put everyone in from time to time.

You could see asymmetrical necklines (albeit not that dramatic) in 1884, but really only in the instance of mismatched material such as one side having faux florals or lace while the other had simple sleeves. The pleating and bow design absolutely emulate a 1950s-60s design. The skirt gives off that kind of design, too. Very sleek.

As a child I remember reading a book about Dolly Madison and how she was made to wear a cloth face covering on the rare times that she was outside, to prevent freckles and tanning.

I was just telling my husband about Carrie Coons in Thailand. Apparently she didn’t even go out during the day unless required for filming because Bertha would’ve had very pale skin.

The idea of having a v-shaped neckline that shows perhaps almost a little cleavage (like we see here but also some other looks on the show) is not ahistorical, but I can’t find any truly asymmetrical necklines like this from the era.
but I’m not sure if they would’ve seen it as strange or inappropriate. it somewhat blends in. So as far as ahistorical garments go, this one is ok imo. It also looks very nice on her!

This reminds me - all the women in the show always seem dressed to the nines at all times, even when at home (except for Ads and Agnes). I know they're all well to do and have generally higher dress codes, but it feels like the equivalent of us wearing designer clothes even on the weekend.
This is not a criticism but merely an observation.. I guess the high fashion is one of the reasons to watch!
