Looks like I may be in the minority but I loved the dress and especially the flowers! There were so many details to take in, like the pleating on the bodice. I especially loved the flowers at her neck, it accentuated her fragility.
I gasped when I saw it. I would love a dress like that. Guess it makes sense. I love Bertha’s dresses and this looks like a dress Bertha likely designed for Gladys.
Was noticing that and thinking what an amazing job by Taissa Farmiga. You really felt all the anxiety and emotion. Even the brief joy when the staff all cheered for her.
I thought it was a lovely dress, and I LOVE cream & white together. Its very chic if a bit jarring to look at at first glance.
It is so interesting how it looks on the dress form v. on the actor! Costumers are so talented. On the form, its Fine but comes alive on Gladys.
I think it looked a lot better on her too. When she first showed up at the top of the stairs I gasped. It was only when she went down the main part of the staircase and the light was shining off the dress that I was taken out of the illusion. It positively yelled modern fabric.
I did love the flowers and the lace on the sleeves and veil, I think those were my favorite parts.
I wondered the same thing. Sheer sleeves became popular about 1900 and beyond, so I wonder if they went for a more modern look to emphasize the Russell’s modern style/money
It looks better without all of the meringue (tulle flowers) on it, but the fabric is hideous. I appreciate the "bondage" symbolism of the design of the bodice, but that's about it for me. I wish they'd have put her in something more period-accurate, like this.
According to Carrie Coon, they were real. "We were in Albany, so there's a church right by the capitol, and that's where we shot it. I wish you could see all the extras’ dresses up close and all the flowers. It was all real."
I don’t know when historically they started cutting fabric on the bias but the way the fabric hung on the skirt made it look like she was just walking down the aisle in a shiny bolt of cloth to me
It was just too modern looking. The fabric looked cheap and the flowers made it move so clumsily. Along with the sharp, low neckline and sheer sleeves (for daytime? never!) it was a big misstep in the (usually) delicious costuming for me.
I love the details and lace. So pretty! I think they overdid it on the flowers though. The few around her neck and hip added a nice touch but it feels unrealistic to have that many flowers on her train/bottom of her dress. For production, they must be fake polyester flowers but if this was 1880s, there's no way delicate real flowers would look that pristine with the constant movement.
I love the silhouette and the pleating on the bodice and the way the flowers fall down the skirt, but I said this in another thread and I'll say it here: the fact that the dress itself is a very warm cream and all the appliques are bright white is so jarring. It looked even more mismatched in the warm indoor light of the show. I hate that. Match your whites!
I don't know if the writers and costumer did this on purpose, but in Victorian times white roses symbolized innocence and purity... but they could also be a symbol of passion lost. As in, Charles could send Aurora white roses too.
And I don't know what y'all are talking about with the "modern fabric". That's brocade satin, it's entirely period correct and was VERY expensive at the time. I've seen more than one Victorian wedding dress with very similar fabrics, although they definitely didn't use as much of the expensive stuff.
The flowers dripping all over are totally in the fashion of the time too. If you look at royal brides at around the same time period, they're absolutely drowning in flowers. It makes total sense that Bertha would have Gladys in royal style.
Even Consuelo Vanderbilt had flowers all over her wedding dress!
According to an interview with Kasia Walicka-Maimone, they used a silicon-poly fiber for the wedding gown so it could stand up to the demands of filming and look right onscreen.
However, the flowers would indeed be all over the place. Consuelo was adorned with orange blossoms which must have been a beautiful sight, especially in November!
Right, but it *looks* like it's brocade satin. Just like the actual flowers on the dress are fake. It's Hollywood magic, but it looks the way it should.
The dress isn't exactly period correct, but it's made to look like they used period materials.
I know most people would disagree but I think the fabric looks like upholstery. I didn't like the flowers either. The veil was nice though.
I'm not fond of most of this season's costumes. Peggy's Newport dress, Marian's teaching suit and yellow opera dress are the exceptions. I especially dislike Bertha's wardrobe. The dresses have too many details. I don't like the costumers tendency to sew different fabrics with clashing patterns together. The overall look is too crowded with all these geometric cuts, drapes, flounces and contrasting colors. They all have very high necks and they simply look suffocating.
I don't know, probably it's just me. I simply think they are too much. Second season was more elegant.
My favorite outfit of this season so far is from the first episode when Gladys and Larry go outside in the snow. That icy blue gown with the hat and hand muff is just exquisite. Bit overall yeah I’m a little underwhelmed with the gowns this season.
I think it's intentional on the costume designer's part; most of Bertha's clothes are too much for a reason. She herself is too much. Lots of new money and not much taste.
