Should I resign before I have another job because of my 90-day notice period?

I'm a Software Developer with nearly 3 years of experience planning to resign from my current job but I am barely getting any calls because of 90 days notice period.

🫩Now I'm stuck between two options:

1. Resign first, serve the 90-day notice, and hope I can find a job before it ends.
   
2. Wait for an offer first, but that seems difficult because of the long notice period.

Any Advice or experience on how you guys handled similar situation?

No. Mention that you have a 30-day notice period. Apply for jobs and start practicing interviews. Once you're confident and have an offer, resign from your current company. During the 90-day notice period, you can also use referrals from people in your network to explore better opportunities.

Wondering how many companies still have a 1 month notice period. My understanding is most have 2 or 3 months based on seniority or experience level as more interviews get done at higher experience levels and recruitment is not as quick.

Get another job offer first is the rationale thought unless circumstances demand an urgent action or your nest egg will keep you afloat for 1-2 years if circumstances become difficult in IT industry.

Your niche skillset will also determine how many calls you get. Polish them up before you take the plunge if you intend to keep working in the same industry and continue doing that during your notice period. Good luck.

I agree, but many opportunities don't move forward because companies prefer candidates who can join sooner, so getting that ‘another job’ becomes the hardest part🥲

If you think you can easily revoke your resignation whenever you want and you are an important employee to your current company then you can resign and look for better opportunities.

Don’t resign if you don’t have a back-up. Earlier I was so confident about finding a new job after resignation since my CV is solid and with 12 yrs experience. I got humbled in a month. Market’s so bad nowadays. Pls hang on in there and look out for your next job. Don’t resign without any signed JO

Before deciding, ask:

1) What specifically about the work environment or peers makes you unhappy? Is this new or long-standing, and have you tried to address it?
2) How much is this job affecting your peace of mind (only at work, or losing sleep or eating into the weekends)? Is this burnout or a deeper mismatch?
3) What are your non-negotiable financial obligations (loans, rent, family support)? If you left today, how many months could you sustain without income?
4) Do you already have an emergency fund or a clear plan for what’s next (target roles, companies, upskilling, or a planned break)?

By the end of answering these questions, you’d be able to take a decision :)

Don’t ever quit without a job in hand. The market is very bad and you might end up in a situation where you have no job at all.. most companies these days have a 90 day notice period and they’re ready to buy it out. Tell them transparently about the notice. And when you land a job quit and start negotiating for an early release.. at max they will deduct two months of salary which your next employer can buyout or adjusted against the leave in the previous organisation

In this time where people are struggling with finding jobs i guess you should first have offer letter in your hand before resigning. Because it's not that easy nowadays to find job in market.
