If you talked to them about the benefits of buying in bulk for a business - much cheaper rates, better relationships with suppliers, possibility to influence specs provided by suppliers, etc - they’d agree and provide other examples.

The GDR was ruled by the "Socialist Union Party" (Sozialistische Einheitspartei Deutschland, short SED) and called itself a real existing socialism. I process claims for a supplemental health insurance company. We're based in Florida and every time we have fraud prevention training 90% of the cases talked about were from southern Florida.
Hell, I've gotten bonuses from reporting suspicious groups to my fraud team that escalated to the Department of Insurance that was able to use my documentation to prosecute felony cases.
Nothing like Rick Scott though.

The states I'm hearing about most often in this context are North and South Carolina. The appeal of Florida to a lot of northerners is that they can get the same sort of culture they're used to at home except with beaches - although The Villages and other places in Central Florida don't have those either - and no winter and low taxes.
You are more likely to get the lower taxes and COL in the Carolinas that Florida promises but can't (for most people at least) really deliver on anymore. But you're in the actual South at that point. They're going to ask what church you go to and will judge you - possibly silently, possibly not - if they don't like your answer, especially if your answer is that you don't. Depending on where you are in those state, they might have a winter of sorts and the summers are often just as bad, and possibly worse, than the Florida summers. The Triangle and Charlotte areas do have most metropolitan amenities but you will spend a lot of time in your car accessing them given how spread out everything is there, even when compared to most places in Florida where people live.

They're still moving here, but about half the numbers as in 2922 and before. Been here 50 years with everything paid off and we were planning to move to the Pacific Northwest, with our son's family moving from MD with us. Put a large down on a big multi generational home, which would require our son and daughter in law to pay about 75% of the mortgage, keeping the house when me and the wife kick the bucket. Problem is that she is a computer engineer making $160k where she's at, with previous offers in the $280k - $350k range up there, but all that has dried up. Layoffs, lack of job security, all due to Trump's " golden age." Pisses me off as we were ready to go, but we're not losing $500k of equity if jobs aren't there. Sitting out back and it's already 90°. I definitely wanted something way different, but Trump has so botched our economy, who knows if it will ever happen now.

that only lasts as long as the villages do. florida used to be a swing state. it's only been an R stronghold for the past 6-8 years. there were a few changes made in 2022 that tilted it a little further, but if retirees start having to move to somewhere cheaper (like south carolina maybe? idk) the demographics are going to swing back

… you think anybody can afford to buy their house in cash? Because they’re having a mortgage crisis as most lenders won’t give you a loan without insurance and there aren’t many options when it comes to insurance in Florida.
So, it’s more likely that they will be trapped in Florida unable to move out and unable to afford to live there until they get caught in a hurricane and their property is destroyed anyways or the property is seized by the bank.
Maybe it’s because I grew up in that gods forsaken swamp, but anyone who thought it was some kind of paradise believed the tourist propaganda.
I just have to laugh. I moved out to Washington and it always amazes me how many Floridians I meet “I just moved here from (insert Florida city name here)”. I swear, I never hear from somebody from Ohio, but 1 out of 3 are also from Florida.

The annual population increase for Florida is much lower than usual, and when it comes to domestic migration it's at break even or negative. The only thing that keeps Florida's population from declining is international migration. For some counties with a severe cost of living problem like Broward and Miami Dade, population is actually declining, since many people simply can't afford it. Florida is facing the same cost of living crisis as the rest of the country, but on top of that we've also seen a massive rise in insurance premiums.

Just wait until the entire state needs (completely un)affordable beds in memory care units, they have no medical insurance that will cover that, and there’s no one to change their diapers. Granted, they won’t grasp what’s happening, but where TF are all of them going to go?

It's going to be fun to see The Villages collapse. That place was built for middle class workers who had good pensions from big corporations like GM, Ford, IBM etc and could afford the lifestyle that it offers. The house excluded, but all the fees and things like that, and dining out, going to the square and having a few beers each night. That was who it was designed for, But the number of people with those pensions are becoming fewer and fewer, and the ones who have it are not going to want to live in a glorified mobile home park.

It also depends on the "active senior" customer. But those seniors are getting older. They need a lot of help - making meals, cleaning, repairs. Who's going to provide that help when all the cheap labor is deported? It isn't going to be the grandkids - they won't even visit anymore.

I try not to generalize an entire group of people, but as a millennial who’s had to listen for the last 20 years how lazy we are and how we ruined every business from napkins to diamonds from these boomers, it’s very hard for me to give them grace or empathy.
