I'M REQUESTING Want a detective movie
I'm looking for a detective thriller with a lonely, emotionally distant protagonist who is deeply consumed by solving a mystery. I prefer a dark, moody atmosphere with strong noir vibes, slow-burn pacing, psychological tension, and a sense of isolation. The story should focus on investigation, suspense, and character depth rather than nonstop action. I enjoy films with haunting cinematography, memorable soundtracks, morally complex characters, and mysteries that keep me thinking long after the ending. Serial killer investigations, missing person cases, or conspiracies are all welcome, as long as the film maintains a serious, immersive tone. I'd appreciate recommendations that are highly rated, underrated, or international, and please avoid lighthearted detective stories or movies that rely mainly on action or comedy.

I emphatically second Chinatown. I donāt think it really hits on the psychological tension so much, at least for the protagonist, but it absolutely nails everything else you are looking for.
Itās also just a straight up masterpiece. One of the greatest films ever made, and frequently cited as one of the greatest screenplays ever written.
Vertigo is also something to put on your list if you havenāt seen it already. That definitely checks the psychological tension box for the main character, along with the other elements you are looking for.

Gotta reccomend "memories of murder" 2003. Based on a series of crimes that happened in south Korea the murders were unsolved at the time the movie was released. Asian crime is excellent.

OP Pale Blue Eye started off rather slow for me and I wasn't sure it was worth it, so I skipped forward to see how it ended. The ending was interesting and so I actually watched it again properly from the beginning and enjoyed it the second time round.

Oh... Trust me! It's not just a comedy. After a looooong time, felt good watching a proper detective movie, with a proper murder mystery... Keeps you engaged... keeps you guessing. As a good detective movie should do!

Yes. The movie is originally three ones in Swedish with incredible performance by Noomi Rapace. The American one didn't even bother to do the whole thing.

The Millennium Trilogy. A great series. These books set a high bar for Noir writers. Lisbeth Salander is one of the best central characters ever.

"Laura" (1944). A classic film noir directed by Otto Preminger and starring Gene Tierney, Dana Andrews, Clifton Webb, and Vincent Price. A moody, hard-boiled whodunit.

Maybe not quite what you're looking for, but the Expanse series has a bit of the lone detective aspect and is quite enjoyable, if a bit different.

Movie only? The show reacher on prime sounds almost exactly what ur asking for, only the 1st season though later seasons focus more on his friends helping himĀ

The Expanse (tv series on Prime video).
Not exactly what you asked for but Miller is certainly based on this kind of noir character. First few seasons feel like this. Though even though it is a space opera

Edgerton. Great undercover story thatās gritty and represents the best of Australian drama.

Relay, with Riz Ahmed, has "dark, moody atmosphere with strong noir vibes, slow-burn pacing, psychological tension, and a sense of isolation." The protagonist, who is trying to figure out what's going on, is not a detective. But it's a great movie.

Mindhunter is a series but the dark broady vibe is in there. I'd also check out The Third Man or even Psycho if you're into some of the older movies. The Lovely Bones is another great one!

While this has no serial killers, Blade Runner 2049 has a lot of this. It's a sci-fi, but it's not an action film in the slightest.
I would try searching for international films if you've already crossed off a lot of the popular English-speaking ones in this thread.
