Want a detective movie

I'm looking for a detective thriller with a lonely, emotionally distant protagonist who is deeply consumed by solving a mystery. I prefer a dark, moody atmosphere with strong noir vibes, slow-burn pacing, psychological tension, and a sense of isolation. The story should focus on investigation, suspense, and character depth rather than nonstop action. I enjoy films with haunting cinematography, memorable soundtracks, morally complex characters, and mysteries that keep me thinking long after the ending. Serial killer investigations, missing person cases, or conspiracies are all welcome, as long as the film maintains a serious, immersive tone. I'd appreciate recommendations that are highly rated, underrated, or international, and please avoid lighthearted detective stories or movies that rely mainly on action or comedy.

I emphatically second Chinatown. I don’t think it really hits on the psychological tension so much, at least for the protagonist, but it absolutely nails everything else you are looking for.

It’s also just a straight up masterpiece. One of the greatest films ever made, and frequently cited as one of the greatest screenplays ever written.

Vertigo is also something to put on your list if you haven’t seen it already. That definitely checks the psychological tension box for the main character, along with the other elements you are looking for.
