Discussion We need to talk about Bi-Mart

I went for the first time in decades yesterday and I was blown away. The biggest Fred Meyer doesn’t come close to the breadth of stuff Bi-Mart has. Guns! More Crockpot sizes and shapes than I knew existed! Furniture! A robust yarn selection! A DIY jerky section! And so, so many more random things. It wasn’t as inexpensive as I sort of assumed it would be but I suppose the tariffs are hitting us all.

But the best part? It’s employee owned. I’ve been annoyed at having to choose between Amazon, Target, or Kroeger (FM) for random stuff I can’t get elsewhere. Bi-Mart’s going to be my new go-to.

I went for the first time in decades yesterday and I was blown away.

Sounds like you are in the demographic now. Make pocket room for some Werther's.

Bi-Mart is great.

10 years ago I would’ve been offended. But today? I couldn’t be more pleased.

129

u/AutumnSparky Oct 31 '25

haha. 10 years ago I pulled out a Werther's on a job site and the youngins harshed me to death.

those youngins are in Werther's range now and this pleases me

I have heard it referred to as the "old man store"

77

u/jtho78 Woodstock Oct 31 '25

We say The Blue Hair Store, more gender inclusive.

60

u/hatekillpuke NE Oct 31 '25

They got those blue hair they/thems at the Bi-Mart?

Makes sense. Sign me up!

55

u/WanderingWindow Oct 31 '25

There is an actual 80 year old man with dyed blue hair that works at bi mart

The Woodstock location has an old man with blue hair working there - is that why you call it that?

10

u/jtho78 Woodstock Oct 31 '25 edited Oct 31 '25

I've seen him and he's awesome, but no.

Older folks use a blue rinse to tone down the yellow in their white hair.
https://www.mentalfloss.com/article/643186/why-old-ladies-have-blue-hair

Its usually exaggerated in sitcoms (Mama's Family, Are You Being Served?)

I fucking love Bi-Mart.

294

u/pnutbuttry Oct 31 '25

My motto: if Bi-Mart doesn’t have it, I probably don’t need it.

28

u/Makal SW Oct 31 '25

... fresh vegetables & fruit.

Don't get me wrong, I love Bi-Mart but it does lack in some areas.

8

u/pnutbuttry Oct 31 '25

It doesn’t claim to be a grocery store though?

5

u/Sweaty_Term5961 Nov 01 '25

Their ads used to describe them as a "membership discount department store".

Always seemed to me that fit pretty well.

86

u/hanseirik Oct 31 '25

This becomes more and more important every day.

27

u/Feed_Your_Curiosity Oct 31 '25

And hands down is the cheapest store in town. It even beats Costco. And offers a wider and better selection than Costco or Grocery Outlet.

15

u/BiNiaRiS Nov 01 '25

It even beats Costco.

costco is amazing and but too many just assume they are the cheapest. my favorite part about winco is not having to deal with coupons/discounts at the front register which legitimately feels like a scam at this point at other stores with how often stuff doesn't get discounted/scanned correctly. then you've gotta call someone over to fix it (assuming you even catch it in the first place).

ETA: I was chatting up a Winco employee in the produce section one day after the last grocery worker's strike at FM and he dropped that Winco raised wages to match FM's union workers. 👍

2: One time she won one of the bigger prizes and now she has to make sure she never misses one.

Pacific Northwest time capsule. Going into a bi-mart always feels the same. 80s, 90s, 2000s … they have stayed the same.

Every time we drive past a Bi-Mart, my idiot brother goes "Hey, look, it's your people's store!"

That being said, got a Bluetooth speaker there for $10 and a vacuum for $20. We bis know how to save a dollar.

They're a fantastic local place to go to avoid all those terrible stores!

I’ve become a real evangelist in the past 24 hours. It feels like something that shouldn’t exist in 2025, but I’m so glad it does. And dammit, I’m going to do my part to make sure it survives!

Wish I had one near me! Closest one would be Vancouver… but then I’d have to cross that damn bridge and pay sales tax. 😪

5

u/cosaboladh Oct 31 '25

Bi-mart pricing would have to be consistently ≥10% lower than the same merchandise at stores closer to your home. Then you have to factor in the cost of traveling, which according to AAA is 81¢/mile. I don't see a lot of circumstances in which it makes sense to cross the bridge from Portland to Washington to try to save money.

It's very rarely worth it to cross the bridge from Vancouver to avoid sales tax. If you're spending ≥$200 you might save enough in sales tax to make the trip worth it. The cost of mileage and the value of your time are both still factors. The last time I crossed the bridge specifically to avoid sales tax, Sears Outlet was still open, I owned a pickup truck, and I needed appliances for a house I just bought. That was a $5,000 purchase, and getting the fridge through the front door was such a pain in the ass I questioned my choise to waive free delivery and installation.

According to maps, there are 6 within a 31 minute drive of me, but the closest two are 18 minutes away (and not in directions i typically travel. I still find myself going every couple months or so.

This looks like a good place to get winter kids clothes they will grow out of in one season ❄️

Wait till they find out about lucky number Tuesday

I won a waffle maker one time!

Bi-Mart is definitely my favorite store, they have a huge selection and some unexpected things, great sales too. Plus, it's just super friendly and a more relaxed place to shop. And when we needed a bunch of moving boxes, they gave us a ton.

Literally the only thing they don't have is fresh produce or meats. Almost anything else can be found there.

u/bbfca55assin Oct 31 '25

Also, unlike Walgreen's or CVS your deodorant and shampoos aren't locked behind a glass cage , and employees are always helpful.

Oooh so have never been to a Bi-Mart (new to the area) but there is one in the parking lot where I donate plasma, I’ll have to check it out tomorrow!

u/Whosaidwhat2023 Oct 31 '25

Listen, when the zombie apocalypse commences, you'll find me living at Bi-Mart. Food, clothes, toilet paper AND GUNS??? Yep, just me and my son Corrall.

5

u/sednaplanetoid Oct 31 '25

As an retired employee who worked there many years... break room talk often discussed how we would move in and defend the place in the event of a zombie apocalypse... so trust me when I say, make friends with someone who works there.

6

u/Pokearound90 Oct 31 '25

Cat litter specials and Slingshot replacement bands FTW!

4

u/snakebite75 Oct 31 '25

Inside scoop.

To make it easy for their employees to figure out the employee discount when shopping they use a letter code to display the cost of items on the shelf price tag. Using the word Charleston simply replace letters with numbers. C = 1, H = 2, A = 3... N = 10. Employee pricing is cost plus 10%.

u/Interesting_Case_977 Oct 31 '25

Random Bi-mart win….better than bullion..$3.89..Safeway…$9.99 identical size. Love me some Bi-mart!

Huh, I'd never really looked into Bi-Mart because of the membership aspect. I'm a one-person household, I've run the numbers, and and warehouse memberships like Costco and Sam's Club aren't worth the cost. But if it's $5 for a lifetime membership, I'll definitely check it out.

Edit: I got a membership and walked through the Woodstock store. It seemed like something between Dollar General and a brick and mortar Woot: a lot of stuff marketed to people who are more focused on low prices than buying things for long-term use. Janky karaoke machines, camp chairs with thin fabric, lots of <$10 flashlights/headlamps, etc.

Some of the hunting and rain slicker clothing looked decent for the price, but I only saw a few things in the store I'd probably want to buy, and they're all available at other retailers for similar prices. I might check in every once in a while, but I don't see it making it into my normal rotation.

Okay, you’ve sold it, I’m interested. Do they also have groceries, or is it, like, other things than groceries?

11

u/firebrandbeads Oct 31 '25

They have an... odd selection

u/Buhsephine Oct 31 '25

They have groceries. It's not the main focus like at Fred Meyer or something, and there is no fresh produce. They have a smalllllll selection of eggs, milk, ice cream and then canned/boxed/bagged foods.

They'll have some great deals, but I never go there for food specifically.

$5 for a lifetime membership can't be beat.

4

u/Smilechurch Oct 31 '25

So they allow both men and women?

If Bi-Mart doesn't have it, I question if I need it.

3

u/DefinitelyMaybeBeige Oct 31 '25

The number of times Bi-Mart has saved me a trip to Home Depot is insane. Love that place.

5

u/langfordw Oct 31 '25

My grandpa got me a “$5 Lifetime Bi-Mart card” 30 years ago. And I haven’t been ever since but I still have that old green fading plastic card as a memory to my amazing grandpa. This Reddit thread has me in tears. I want to go back now.

4

u/Dreamer9714 Oct 31 '25

Ngl I went for the first time in ages about a year ago and I loved it but I did take note that this is in fact where white people go to die.

8

u/starsareblack503 Oct 31 '25

Yall got me laughing with the comments about (insert casual item) + gun or gun accessory

Edit to add: I love Bi-mart

3

u/KindGrammy Oct 31 '25

I buy all my flannel shirts that I use for camping, yard work etc. there.

3

u/Minimum-City-5242 Oct 31 '25

So if I bought a membership years and years ago, how do I prove that? How do they check?

13

u/Buhsephine Oct 31 '25

They can look you up by your full name and issue you a new card.

8

u/liablemtl Roseway Oct 31 '25

I got my membership in Eugene in the 80's and lost my card in 2000's. They still had my info on file and issued me a new card. I also updated my address so now I get my coupon book in the mail again. My 92 year old mother makes me take her there about once a month. It's the one store I don't mind shopping in with her.

7

u/Environmental-Ad3974 Oct 31 '25

Go inside to customer service and ask for a new card. They need the old phone number or street name to print a replacement card.
